MTV: NIKKI REED REVEALS ‘NEW MOON’ SECRETS

Posted May 15th, 2009 By: Team Switzerland 7 Comments »

We heard from Nikki Reed earlier when she spoke with Access Hollywood, and now MTV has a little interview of their own. In this new interview, Nikki talks about how much we should expect to see the Cullens in New Moon, how they’ve made the birthday scene “understated”, and says the films “don’t need a massive amount of blood to get feisty”:

“The Cullens aren’t really in the second book and the studio was trying to stay true to the books,” she told MTV News. “I was sort of surprised by the few scenes that I watched. I feel like they’re gonna be great, and the movie as a whole will be wonderful and [director] Chris [Weitz] is doing an amazing job.”

But the Cullens are in a very pivotal scene in both the book and the film. And Reed insists that when fans get to finally see Bella’s now-infamous 18th-birthday scene, it will be the fact that they played it out in an understated way that will make all the difference.

“[There isn't] that much [blood], believe it or not,” she said. “Unless they plan on adding stuff in on post [production]. But I think that’s the whole point is that we don’t need a massive amount of blood to get feisty.”

With “New Moon” underway, plans are already being made for its follow-up, “Eclipse,” and Reed has already had talks with its director, David Slade. “I met with him while I was there [on set],” she said. “I think he’s going to be fantastic. Each film is going to get better and better. We’ve all figured out our characters and we’re all just excited. We’re making a fun series.”

I love the Cullens, but I’m glad to hear that they are staying true to the book and not adding in more of the Cullens. They have some crucial scenes in New Moon, but the majority of the story they’re not there, and I’m glad to hear that’s how it will be on-screen as well. I’m excited to hear her talk about the birthday party scene. That’s one of the most anticipated scenes, so it’s great to hear that it went well.

What did you think of this interview? Are you pleased with the things Nikki has said about filming for New Moon? Are you relieved or saddened to hear that more of the Cullens won’t be added in the film?

I’m glad they aren’t changeing things.

I mean, I love the cast, but this is ABOUT THE BOOKS. Not about Rob, or Kristen, or Ashley, or Nikki, or Kellan, or Jackson, etc. THE BOOKS.

I think it would have been a disaster if they had added more of the Cullens, so I am glad they aren’t.

And, maybe I need to re-read New Moon (sob) but I don’t remember there being TONS of blood in the brithday scene?!? Understated only makes sense, to me. To make it a bloody, gory, mess wouldn’t be true to the story, or Stephenie’s vision.

    Just my two cents.

I was glad to hear that they didn’t make the birthday scene some gore-fest. I mean, truly… that comes later! Anyway, I wonder why no one’s talking about the VOTE scene??? Surely they filmed that! To me, that’s what catapults us into ‘Eclipse’ and, luckily, we won’t have to wait that long for it to come out in theaters! I guess I’m just surprised that none of the Cullens have said, “Oh yeah, and the vote scene’s pretty good, too!” Oh well…. guess we’ll just have to wait and see!

I’m trying very hard not to be swept up in the suddenly massive flood of anti-Nikki sentiment. I’m not sure what brought this on.

She doesn’t seem to be such a bad person to me. I don’t think she is jumping in front of a camera as much as some others. But, they are actors after all and being in front of a camera is what they do. Whether on a movie set on a red carpet. Ok, mini-rant over.

I’m not sure if Nikki read the book. She talks of the BD scene with only a little blood as if that wasn’t to be expected. I don’t recall a lot of blood either. Did she expect more? Bella’s papercut produced only a drop. When she fell and cut her arm on the crystal plates, yes there was blood sort of flowing down her arm, but truthfully, I never took that to mean it was alot. Just that for a human to be bleeding in a room full of vampires, even if they were the right-thinking Cullens, would be a dangerous situation.

I’m not sure what Nikki was telling us. Less is more?

I am really looking forward to New Moon, but like other comments I didn’t think there wasn’t a lot of blood in the Birthday Party scene, so its great that it is understated as that is the way I saw it in my head when I read the book. I was like why is Edward so freaked out. NO! his not leaving over that. On the Nikki interview I think what she meant is, rather than visual effects its going to be about emotions (and great acting – I am hoping) which conveys the danger that Bella is in.

Heather4EdwardBella: I’m not sure I understand your question about Edward. He wasn’t freaked out about the blood himself. He shouted NO! because due to his ability to read everyone’s mind, he saw that Jasper WAS freaked out over the little drop of blood from the cut. We were constantly reminded of Jasper being new to the life and therefore not having the same control as the others. Jasper lost it. He was going to kill Bella. Edward saw that in time to stop him. If you go back and read the description, Jasper was (this is me paraphrasing) snapping at Bella with empty eyes. He had reverted to a human-killing vampire over that one drop. That near death for Bella is what set everything in motion. That is what Edward was referring to as he took her home later. A paper cut would not have given her a death sentence if she had been with Mike Newton.

Nikki, Nikki, Nikki…anyone notice that NR is never too far away when RP gets papped? I’m just saying. It’s her comment about the Cullens not really being in New Moon that has me worried. There is one Cullen for sure who plays a big part at the end of the book. I’m almost finished re-reading it, so her role is fresh in my mind. I hope they don’t diminish our little Alice’s crucial role.
