MTV: ‘TWILIGHT’ VS. ‘SLUMDOG’ FOR MTV MOVIE AWARDS

Posted May 28th, 2009 By: Team Switzerland 21 Comments »

MTV has two new articles for us today where they take a look at who is likely to win ‘Best Kiss’ at the MTV Movie Awards this coming Sunday, and they even let stars weigh in on the Twilight vs. Slumdog Millionaire battle for the coveted ‘Best Movie’ award.

In terms of ‘Best Kiss’, MTV considers Slumdog the frontrunner, and Twilight the underdog:

Who’s the Favorite?
Over the past few months, we’ve learned three important lessons: The “Slumdog Millionaire” people tend to do well when it comes to televised competition; people love, love, love the scene where Freida Pinto demands a kiss from Dev Patel in the train station; and Oscar, the Golden Globes and every other awards show known to man have already kneeled before Danny Boyle’s heart-tugging instant classic. So, if you think we’re betting against Freida and Dev taking home Best Kiss, you’ve got another thing coming. And yes, that is our final answer.

Who’s the Underdog?
As much as I’d love to give the inside track to my “Twilight” homies KStew and RPattz, they have three more movies full of face-sucking to remind us why Stephenie Meyer’s romantic words have swept a generation off its feet.

Looking at ‘Best Movie’, the stars seem to lean a bit toward Slumdog, but they definitely don’t count Twilight out:

Taylor Momsen: “I would pick ‘Slumdog Millionaire.’ It was totally not what I was expecting. The little boy in the beginning was so cute. I couldn’t handle it.”

Jesse McCartney: “I’m going to have to go with the ‘Slumdog’ team. I thought it was a very creative film.”

Jordana Brewster: ” ‘Twilight’! I really did love ‘Twilight,’ but I really did love ‘Slumdog Millionaire.’ So those two. [But Kristen Stewart] is a really good actress. I really love Kristen Stewart.”

Spencer Pratt: ” ‘Slumdog’! We love that movie. The storytelling [was really good]. I’ve never seen a movie told in that way. Visually stimulating.”

Heidi Montag: “I haven’t seen ‘Twilight’ yet. It scares me a little bit. Vampires!”

Anna Faris: “I love ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ — it got its accolades. I kind of root for ‘Twilight.’ It was such a fun, amazing movie.”

While the rest of voting for the awards is closed, you can still vote for ‘Best Movie’ for a while longer. To do so, click here. And if you haven’t already read MTV’s big New Moon announcement from this morning, here.

I actually haven’t seen Slumdog Millionaire, so I can’t give a completely unbiased opinion on this situation. I think MTV hit the nail on the head by saying that Kristen and Rob have three more movies to potentially win best kiss, but I’ll admit I have a bit of selfishness inside of me and I’d like to see Twilight win Best Kiss and Best Movie for all four films.

Have you seen Slumdog Millionaire? Realistically, who are you betting on to dominate the MTV Movie Awards? How many awards do you think Twilight will walk away with?

I own slumdog – and slumdog and twilight are on opposite sides of the spectrum to me. I’ve only watched slumdog once – I’m not telling how many times I’ve watched twilight.

There was so much abuse and sadness in slumdog. Reality is being depicted in this movie. Twilight isn’t reality (unless my vampire lover wants to show up today and sweep me off my feet without killing me) and in this I rest my case. Slumdog could be in the real news any day of the week – I try to avoid the negativity of the news. Call me biased or whatever you want to, I’ll take Twilight over Slumdog.

Twilight was great, don’t get me wrong. It’s just “Slumdogg Millionaire” was beautifully done. Everything was perfect. I’m hoping quality will trump popularity for “Best Movie.”

…Twilight could have “Best Kiss,” I suppose.

I did see Twilight(of course) and Slumdog. I have to tell you that I did not enjoy Slumdog as many people did. It may have been a heart warming film but I do have a big problem when it comes to watching children being abused by adults. As a mom it broke my heart and angered me to watch that movie, it was not pleasant to watch. All the happy dancing at the end of the movie did not make up for all the pain and miss use of those children during the first 90% of the film.
I do not like to leave a theater depressed and I did after Slumdog.
Of course I liked Twilight, it was much more relatable to me. A much better love story.
In fact I liked it so much I saw it aleast 6 times in the theater and bought the DVD. I would not ever go to see Slumdog again, even for free. I know to each his own; but my sister and several friends felt the same way about Slumdog, they did not like it at all. I still want Twilight to win, even thought there are more films to come.

Ok, here’s my opinion. For Best Kiss, there is no comparison. The kiss in Twilight was so steamy and emotional and included Spunk Ransom, it should win. I am biased because I am a Twilight fan, but I honestly do not see a comparison. And who doesn’t want to see Rob and Kristen accept the award and possibly smooch.

I have seen both movies and Slumdog was pretty freaking good. But it was on an Oscar level. The MTV Movie Awards is a pop culture award show. Twilight was the biggest pop culture movie of 2008, so therefore it should beat Slumdog. I honestly think that The Dark Knight was better than these two movies, but obviously it is not in the running.

  • Cindy

I think Twilight should win. Everybody already knows Slumdog has won several awards from everywhere last year already. Honestly I don’t think it should have been nominated this year. I don’t think it’s right.

  • kerri

I’ve never seen Slumdog. So I wont say it is or isnt better then Twilight. Im hoping Twilight will win best kiss! Or Rob wins best new comer. In reality, Twilight wasnt the best because it had such a tiny budjet, but New Moon…now thats our year for awards, I think!

VOTE FOR TWILIGHT BEST KISS!!!!!!!! A vampires kiss has to be hotter then anything else!

  • Vivianne

I love Slumdog Millionare… every bit of it captured my attention and the end… it was more than words can explain.
However, I voted for Twilight, and I don’t know why. I did it because of it’s origin and New Moon. To be honest, Twilight was ‘ok’ but New Moon is my favorite in the series and I just love the cast =)

  • courtney

I never saw Slumdog, so I am posting this as a ‘from heard about’ position. Everyone who has seen this movie has told me not too watch it. The children used in the film are still very poor, I think I heard one of the actors just lost their home (parents but you get my point) I voted Twilight for best movie and kiss many times and I know I’m not the only one. I would like Twilight to win but I won’t be surprised if it is beaten out in at least 1 or 2 categories-best fight for example. I think Batman and Joker have that one. I will watch Slumdog one day but I am a mother also and don’t believe that any child-no matter what their background, should be allowed to live in poverty.

  • jess

We all may absolutely love everything twilight, but most will have to concede that slumdog was actually much more well made, thought out, designed, written, etc. Definitely a higher quality movie, more touching, and more important from a real-world humanistic standpoint. I love twilight but hope slumdog wins!

  • leng

Twilight, of course. I don’t like slumdog and I watch but didn’t really like it. But maybe Slumdog is really fresh-idea movie for many people and they like it? Who knows? Maybe, I don’t have the taste?

  • Midori

Twilight had the best….passionate kiss. As for Slumdog I didn’t like the movie. It wasn’t my kind of movie. Slumdog had a bigger budget than Twilight.

  • twilightfan14

I liked Slumdog Millionaire but I saw it once and that was enough for me. Yes, it was good but still manipulative and hard to watch. I watch Twilight at least 3 times a week and love it every time. It makes me smile. I hope Twilight wins all 7 awards it’s up for, but realistically, I am pretty sure Kristen will win Actress and Rob will win Breakout, sure Twilight will win best fight, and it should win best kiss-seriously, that was HOT-how could they not win? I really hope Paramore wins for the song-Decode was a great song and perfect for Twilight. I don’t think it will win best movie-I hope it does, but with The Dark Knight and Slumdog in the mix-I really don’t know. It’s a good sign that Rob and Kristen got the best seats in the house-right in the front row, which means Twilight is definitely winning more than one award! Can’t wait to see that trailer!!!! I need a Valium already! I think I’m hyperventalating! Ha ha!

  • holly

i’ll say it, i love slumdog millionaire its a very special movie to me..and was it a better movie than twilight? absolutely.
but the catch lies here, i love the twilight books.. they are apart of who i am today, all the characters you grow so close to while reading, they become your family..i think people know what i’m talking about =]
and then were lucky enough that this amazing story is coming to life on the big screen and its even being awarded for various nominations.. so with me, (at least) NOT voting, i can’t, i’m too loyal to this series that i love to vote for anything else, even if the other choices might have a better fight scene, or best actress.. I DON’T CARE.
my vote will always be twilight.. =]

ps- pshh if twilight were to win one award i would hope it to be best kiss cause i have never seen such a short handed kiss like that get young and old people world wide hot and bothered, like lots do haha

  • Ingeyla

i totally agree with kerry. a vampire’s kiss has 2 b hotter than anything else n i don’t care how better made slumdog was than twilight. i voted 4 twilight everyday n i really hope it wins cuz im an avid twilighter!

  • Twilight Mom Australia

I have not seen Slumdog and I don’t plan to, the title alone put me off, during the many times I went to theater to see Twilight they showed the trailer for Slumdog, nah, this movie does not appeal to me at all, I am with Marianne as a mother I do not like to see children abused and from what I hear the children that were in this movie are being abused in real life ,too. So nah, not for me at all, even with the happy dancing…. So ….
I have voted a lot for Twilight , in all categories , I am hoping that Twilight wins them ALL…….
    Twilight Rules, yes it does………

  • urwa

its about time people recognized bollywood movies……………….i would like slumdog to win, i grew up watching indian movies…………………………………but then again, i always hyperventilate whenever i see rob…………hhhmmmm……………….aaarghh im torn!!!

  • ghostgirl

i actually seen slumdog millionare and as u said it’s a complete different movie it’s not fiction it’s a fun story mixed with cruel reality and hope really great movie…but when it comes to the kiss i don’t think the kiss was something spectacular or different it was just a kiss a reunion kiss mixed with bollywood dance…and i’m not saying that cause i love twilight but if there’s anything tiwlight MUST win is best kiss.i mean the tension the forbidden love it’¡s not like anithing else.
on the other hand i’ve voted for twilight in a few categories but not everyone of them i think other movies r great too

  • Chris

The Dark Knight > Slumdog Millionaire > Twilight

  • Kayla

Well, I LOVE Twilight of course! But in my list of favorite movies, I think Titanic is #1, Twilight is #2 (Twilight is an EXTREMELY close second), and Slumdog Millionaire is #3. I have a ton of other favorite movies too, but those are my top 3.

  • natalie

    Whoa, Fact:
    1. The children who were in the movie now all have trust funds so that they can have frist class schooling and money in their futures.
    2. It was a film the children were never *really* abused! It was just showing some some childeren in the slums are treated in *real* *life.*
If you can’t handel that then i suggest you never go to India or the ghetto.
