MTV: VANESSA HUDGENS AUDITIONS FOR NEW MOON
MTV: With all the “New Moon” casting rumors that have been floating around since “Twilight” hit theaters, we were especially wondering who would play werewolf Leah Clearwater, Jacob Black’s feisty and heartbroken frienemy.
Ashley Greene, who plays Alice Cullen in the movies, thinks ‘High School Musical’ actress would be ‘great’ as Leah Clearwater.
Well, one of the rumored actresses in the running — “High School Musical” starlet Vanessa Hudgens — has apparently taken the next step and auditioned for the role, according to “Twilight” actress Ashley Greene.We ran into Alice herself at a Golden Globes afterparty, and she told us she’d be happy to co-star with Hudgens. “I think she’d be great,” Greene enthused.
Just last week, we asked Twilighters on our Movies Blog what actress should play Leah, including Hudgens and “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody” actress Brenda Song as two poll options. The actresses tied at 31 percent of your vote, with “neither” being the most popular choice at 38 percent.
Commenters had a lot to say about Hudgens’ possible casting — both positive and negative.
“I cannot picture her being mean or aggressive as Leah,” Mary_ym commented about the Disney star.
“Vanessa Hudgens would be a good choice,” chill_kid_07 countered. ” … Of course she can’t look like Leah — no one can. You know why? ‘Cause it’s just a book, and these are actors trying to portray the roles! I think she would be great.”
Besides casting, Greene also had some news on the status of “New Moon.”
“I hear they’re doing another rewrite,” the actress revealed of the in-flux script. “I’m with you guys — I’m so excited to read it.”
Ummm yeah, kinda speechless. I was hoping this was a rumor. I haven’t been stubborn about much relating to Twilight so far, but I just cannot see her as Leah. It sounds like the fans are sort of in the middle about it. What do you think?
On another note, the script is in for another re-write. I wonder why…..???

Vanessa is already known around the world for being hsm sweetheart but it would just make New Moon worse considering she is already such a familiar face it would be stupid to portray this actress as fantasy movie character i believe ther are alot more options that could be considered so noooooooooo

I not a big fan of the 21st century Disney movies that get released these days (it’s just not my cup of tea), and so I don’t have anything against Vanessa personally… She’s just not Leah.
Vanessa is petite and feminine and honestly, comes across as an ‘it-girl’. And lets face it - Leah is a bada**. And with her sweet little Disney voice and Hollywood pout, Vanessa doesn’t come across as the Clearwater we all know and (some of us) love.
So my vote is No. Just… no.
The great thing about the actors who were in Twilight was that none of them were “name brands” like Vanessa is — it would be really difficult not to think of her in the HSM sense not to mention that she’s not right for the role. The roles in Twilight are meant for character actors not wannabes
She’s too sugary to play Leah. And I’d really prefer someone who is native american, or at least looks native american. She looks too spanish. They need someone less, i dont know, fragile isnt the word im looking for, but shes just not right.
I’d imagine “those stupid Disney girls” would both love a chance to break out of the “Disney” pigeon-hole everybody puts them in. New Moon would allow them to play a role completely different from anything they’ve done. Imagine Vanessa’s fear that, at–what is she?–20?–she’s done all she can do as an actress. I say, if either of them prove real acting chops in the auditions, go for it. But I agree that it would be less distracting and more interesting to cast a relative unknown.

This would be the worst decision that summit could make. I can understand wanting someone who is considered a hot teen star, but come on at least get a girl for Leah who can act her way out of a paper bag. They also should at least find a girl who looks Native American.

What a joke! If she gets it, it would be such stunt casting and not a sign they’re taking the movie very seriously. I can’t believe there are not some wonderful Native American actresses out there who would be great in this role. At least *try* to find one. Besides, I’m surprised at the interest. Leah, as a character doesn’t play much of a role in the story until Breaking Dawn. V.H. is willing to stand around in the background for two pictures with no guarantee that the fourth will get made? Makes no sense.

NO. I really hope casters and the Director put into consideration that Vanessa has already been typecast as the giddy sweetheart. There is noway she would be able to pull it off. Leah needs to be played by an unknown face. Someone who can truly make the role their own. Bad idea!! One of the things that made this movie work for me was the casting of relative unknowns. They all had experience, and had all been in some good movies, but none were really household names…your mom wouldn’t have known who they were. I’m guessing most moms know who VH is, with HSM running on Disney constantly. I have nothing against VM or HSM, I actually liked the movie, and once that “We’re all in this together” song gets in my head, it’s there for days, LOL, but I reallly want to keep the intimate,indie feel of the movie. Bringing in an established big name will ruin that.
I’m not worried about a re-write…there was alot wrong with the way the first movie was adapted. There was also alot right…I’ve seen it 6 times, so obviously I loved it. But if there needs to be some tweaking to make the movie more true to the book, so be it. As long as the re-write isn’t to bring Edward into the movie more. We need to miss him and grieve with Bella to make the relationship with Jacob happen for us.

They’ve done such a wonderful job so far by casting a relatively unknown cast - they should continue to do this!
And I believe they have a bit more flexible budget than they did for Twilight, but signing a “Disney Star” is going to cost a lot more than signing a relative unknown, and they’re gonna have some pretty hefty CG to do with this one. Why waste the budget??
People were going on about how it’s okay to cast a shorter Leah because Taylor is so short, but he’s 5′11″ (imdb.com), and Leah’s supposed to be pretty beefed up herself because of the phasing.
If we’re gonna go with a short actress and use camera tricks to make everyone look taller, why not go with someone who actually LOOKS Native American, like Q’orianka Kilcher? (Her dad’s a native South American from Peru, and her mom’s from Switzerland)

Okay, I’m apparently (yet again) about to say something unpopular…
While I would rather see an unknown cast as Leah Clearwater, I don’t see what the uproar is about Vanessa Hudgens. Yes, she’s known as a star of High School Musical. And? Rob Pattinson was known as a supporting player in Harry Potter, and he did a *fabulous* job as Edward.
There is the possibility that whoever is cast in this role will be a disappointment. I think it would actually be fairly cool to see Vanessa Hudgens in the vastly different role of Leah Clearwater. Maybe she’ll pull a Rob Pattinson on us and rock it out so hard everybody will be talking about *her* before Eclipse. “Oh, I wonder how Vanessa is going to play *that* scene? I wonder about how she’ll handle the betrayal of Sam?” etc, etc, etc.
As an aside: I have absolutely no idea who Brenda Song is. But I guess the same would apply to her.
So, my preference: an unknown actress. But will I get in a tizzy over Vanessa Hudgens? No. If she auditions and gets the part, there has to be a reason why. The casting for the first movie was very good, I think they’ll do a stand-up job the second time around too.

Please NO! Don’t get me wrong, i like Vanessa Hudgens, she’s a great singer and she suits the HSM role well, but PLEASE for the love of GOD, don’t cast her as Leah! She is nothing like i pictured the character and in my opinion, casting her would be detrimental to the success of the movie. People would link ‘New Moon’ and ‘High School Musical’ and that is a fate worse than death. HSM is a guilty pleasure, sure i like a good sing along, but how can you compare a box office hit and world-wide bestselling novel with something that started off as a Disney channel movie… If she does get the part, i won’t be able to watch her in it without thinking about HSM, and i’d hate for that to happen!

Don’t get me wrong, but I would be much happier to see Leah actually portrayed by someone Native American.. Not sure about Vanessa, but just don’t see her in the part. She probably ages the same that Jacob does when she becomes a wolf, so Leah would be about 25 as well.. Vanessa is a bit too young and to pull that off..next!

Okay - she’s a cute girl. But there are oodles of cute & capable girls out there. Could be a time issue & they can’t audition properly, so they are settling. Twilight already has a huge fan base, can’t imagine they think it will increase just because of VH. Call me crazy, but as far as the “movie version” goes - I think Leah’s part could be close to no existant. There is a lot of story there to get in a small amount of time, something has to give. VH could land on the cutting room floor - which is okay with me!

Well, I haven’t seen her act…I’m not into the whole HSM thing…so I can’t comment on her acting. But she is certainly pretty enough to play Leah.
I’ll hold my comments on her acting until I can catch one of the HSM on tv (I’ll be looking for the next available showing on tv).
I can understand what they are thinking in maybe attempting to cast her though. If you look at it from a business standpoint…which a studio will do…casting her in the Twilight series of movies would hopefully (in their minds) bring her HSM fan base with her.

i think people are being a little harsh. just because she’s Disney doesn’t mean she’s not talented. i personally can’t see her as Leah but that’s because she’s always played happy roles it’s nothing to do with Disney. i agree with the fact that she’ll probably make the movie lose it’s reputation as a proper blockbuster romance hit but she could do well and then the movie will get it’s reputation back. I think people should give her a chance and if she does get the role and she’s rubbish i will be right behind all of you in trashing her but not before i’ve actually SEEN her as Leah.
NOOOOOO!!! I like Vanessa Hudgens but not for this movie. She is too syrupy and sweet for a role like Leah. It has nothing to do with looks. She simply does not have the acting chops to be in scenes with actresses like Kristen Stewart. Kristen’s Bella wouldn’t give a flip about a Leah who was as innocent and gentle as Vanessa let alone be frightened and intimidated by her disdain.

A huge part of why I enjoyed the movie so much was because they used fairly unknown actors in all the parts. I really hope they keep with that for all the new roles. Surely there are very talented actors out there who can fit the roles really well and have had very little to no screen time.

Has anyone else seen the picture of Taylor and Vanessa recieving a check for an organization. I find it very interesting that these 2 were photographed together. I wonder if it is a way to start getting her picture and name more out there for possibly casting her as Leah????? Maybe the agents or who ever are looking for ways to try and get the fans to see Taylor and Vanessa together more so we will want her to play leah…..what does anyone else think?????????
I read all the fuss over Vanessa being cast as Leah. I’m going to be Team Switzerland on this one. Do you recall all the fuss when Robert Pattinson was cast as Edward? Some even went so far as to start petitions to have him removed. Is there any other movie besides the HSM movies that Vanessa has been in to exercise her acting chops? I believe that if she is capable, she will be cast, if not, they will find another capable actress. Let us have faith in the casting directors on hiring her for her acting and not her fame or name.
ummm…..i don’t picture vanessa as leah….because Leah is kind of mean and this and that. I don’t see Vanessa doing that. Plus i think Vanessa is too nice to play the role…but i’d love to see her in new moon and the next two….if there is Breaking Dawn coming out.

When I first saw this rumor about Vanessa and Brenda I immediately didn’t want it. But then I thought about other things, like with Rob and how many people signed a petition for him not to be in it and now almost everyone loves him as Edward?
Also I’ve heard comments from before the movie about the other casting, like Taylor Lautner.
I think that we should give them a chance, Vanessa might be able to pull it off, I’m sure they’re see if she can play that side of Leah during the auditions.

Just because Vanessa is pretty and has done the Disney Princess thing doesn’t mean she can’t act. I don’t think she should be denied the opportunity just because people know who she is. If they cast her I am pretty sure its because they think she will do a good job. Its not really like New Moon needs any more press or will have to do much to generate a great opening box office.
I don’t like her as any of the characters, she needs to stay away from anything that has to do with twilight. She looks too young and too nice for Leah or Jane. I have alawys seen Leah as someone who never has a smile on her face, the opposite of her brother Seth who is always nice. I don’t get it either.
Lionandlamblove.org found out that Lucy Hale did audition, they said it was said on a Ryan Secrest radio show. I’m happier with her because she almost has a mean look to her, even though she is pretty at the same time. She isn’t native american though, which is what the casting people should be focusing on, not how many already famous people they can get in the twilight series.
One of the things I liked about the Twilight movie is that none of the actors in it were super well known, so I really got to focus on the story and not on the actors (thinking about what I’ve seen them in before or comparing them to other roles they’ve played). Vanessa Hudgens is pretty well known because of the High School Musical movies. If she is in the New Moon movie I know I’ll just be comparing her role as the fiesty Leah to her role in HSM as the sweet and innocent Gabriella.

Well, my kneejerk reaction to this news would usually be, “No. Absolutely not.”
But I don’t think it really matters. I believe that the casting directors will choose the actress that they feel is the most capable and adaptable to the role. I’m hoping that they will not be swayed by the actress’s marketability, but this *is* Hollywood, and making movies is about making money…which means that Summit will probably take into account the fact that casting Vanessa Hudgens would make New Moon’s box office takings even bigger than they would be without her.
But hiring Vanessa Hudgens on would also mean shilling a lot for her, because she’s already an established star who practically belongs to the Disney empire.
Frankly, I’m mildly opposed to her being in the Twilight films just because I know she’ll bring with her a writhing swarm of pre-pubescent HSM fangirls. The Twilight series *DOES NOT NEED* any more drooling, hyperventilating fangirls who have no appreciation for the books and who only love the series because they swoon for the pretty faces in the movies.
We’ll see how this turns out, but if they cast Vanessa Hudgens, I’ll be surprised.

I think it would be a huge mistake on the casting directors part if they cast a well known actress in Leah’s role. I personally think someone like Misty Upham would be better suited.

I think she could make a GREAT Leah. The only drawback is her height(5′6″) and there’s some controversy with her being a young unwed mother. But, she’s definitely got the look and more importantly the acting chops. Plus there’s the Hardwicke connection (not necessarily a plus these days at Summit, but still…) I just think she brings some gravity and dimension the table as opposed to just a size 0 dress size and great publicity photos. The more I think about it, the more I like it!

I think they should cast only unknowns or little-known actors from here on out. All the major roles were cast for the first movie, and I don’t want them to add any actors or actresses who might take some of the focus off the original players. Plus, Summit seems to insist on keeping the budget low, and any established names will cut into that.
Funny thing… People actually petitioned that Robert Pattinson was not good enough to play Edward Cullen, and now look. Just because she is a “disney kid” doesn’t mean she isn’t a good actress. If they something in her and think she can do it, then good for her.

New Moon is NOT some happy-go-lucky musical, and Disney will not be allowed to take Twilight if I have any say in the matter.
