NEW MOON TO BE SHOT IN MONTEPULCIANO INSTEAD OF VOLTERRA

NEW MOON TO BE SHOT IN MONTEPULCIANO INSTEAD OF VOLTERRA

When discussing the book ‘New Moon’, people often associate it with Volterra, Italy, where the latter part of the book is set. Well, according to a new magazine article, Volterra will not be used in ‘New Moon’, but instead, Montepulciano. Why, exactly, will it not be shot in Volterra? Read below to find out:

According to Twilighters Italia, “The authoritative voice to emit the news has been that of Piera Detassis, director of Ciak”. Detassis met with producers of Summit, and was able to give the exclusive scoop. Below are his words:

Despite advertisements, anticipations and every kind of proposal from the major and the township, New Moon will be shot in Montepulciano because the locations are “more beautiful for the movie” than Volterra.

Credit to TwilightersItalia for the article, Lion_Lamb LJ for the translation, and Anitamachichi for the link.

Yes, the picture above is of the beautiful Montepulciano. A quick Google search and you can find tons of great images from the new filming location.

I think Montepulciano is great, but I’m a little saddened that Volterra won’t be used. I’m happy that they chose a more visually appealing place, but there is a lot of sentiment in Volterra and I think it would really have been great to stick with that.

What do you think of this news? Are you upset by the fact that Volterra won’t be used, or are you happy that they’ve found a better location? Would you rather they stuck to the story and kept things in Volterra?

  1. antigone responded:

montepulciano is absolutely gorgeous. i speak as someone who has visited this beautiful town. i have never been to volterra so i can’t really compare - but i can say that i am ecstatic that they have chosen montepulciano!!

  2. Emily responded:

I looked at the photos of Montepulciano and of Volterra, and I think they should have stuck with Volterra. I’m sure that neither one is going to be unattractive, they both look like beautiful cities - and it’s Italy for God’s sake. I wish they would have gone with Volterra, but will not complain as I think that what is most important is that they go to Italy and not do it on a sound stage.

  3. ceci responded:

whatever works visually works for me. it’s the ‘feel’ that is important.

  4. kijo921 responded:

Of course it’s sad news but we’ll get over it… I mean, they’re in Vancouver shooting “Forks, Washington” for goodness sake! I would like to have known that it was Volterra, but if it’s a good movie… it’ll be just fine!

Btw, that quote from the article seems a little disheartening to me saying that Montepulciano would be more visually appealing… it’s more beautiful than Volterra (uh-hmm.. cough, cough … slap in Volterra’s face if you ask me)?

  5. Kayla responded:

Well, I guess as long as it resembles Volterra and works well for the film, it’s fine with me. I just want the best New Moon movie they can make, no matter where they shoot it.

  6. she runs with vampires responded:

I’m disappointed because I wanted the beautiful, historical city associated with the movie as much as the book. I knew they had to change venues for Forks but I thought they only did that because of the crazy unpredictable weather.

  7. Just Megan responded:

Whichever is fine by me. Technically in Twilight (the book) there were supposed to be at the airport but the movie never showed any airport just focused on the hotel

  8. amandaaa responded:

who cares if they change the location?
i mean look at how many changes they made
to the twilight movie. okay.. i am a teeny bit
disappointed that they aren’t using Volterra
but if its going to make the movie even
better, then , hey! why not?

  9. Marie responded:

As as Italian-American, in addition to being a fan and lover of the TwilightSaga, I strongly feel as though Volterra should have been used. There is only one Piazza di Priori and it’s in Volterra. I’m sure Chris Weitz will be able to “CGI” the clock tower and fountain, but, by filming in Montepulciano (although a very lovely area), the film loses the realism we hard-core book fans expect. I may be old fashioned, but I would rather stick with the “real thing.” According to the quote above, Summit (and/or anyone associated with New Moon) didn’t have any say as to where the movie would be filmed - they were told! Just like the old saying: “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” I guess.

  10. elissa responded:

    omgsh!
    honestly i really dont care
i mean it would be cool
    to shoot in volterra
    but if it looks
    like the book describes
    then who cares
    lol

  11. kerri responded:

I dont have a problem with it. Actually the other city is beautiful! It’s more of what I pictured when I read it.

  12. darlenecullen responded:

Sorry to disagree with you all,but if there was a better reason for this, rather than just being more beautiful, I can understand. But they are in Italy anyway, and Volterra is where the story took place. Who cares what looks better. As a matter of fact when I was reading,I wasn’t feeling the beauty of it. It was very intense, and spooky and gut wrenching, and I couldn’t sleep that night. That’s what we want to see. A place that will send chills up and down your spine, and touch your very core!!! Kind of pissed off! Here we go with all the changes. If I was Stephenie, I would step in. It’s her story.

  13. Doll_partz responded:

Of course the idea is to stay as true to the book as possible. And when Stephenie wrote it she had just that in mind. I am sure both places are breath taking, but I do have to admit after looking at many pictures from both places I got the chills when I looked at Montepulciano pictures. Not only is their city plazza protected by walls, but they have a lot of gothic architecture. I can’t wait!

  14. andrea responded:

i think that they should do it in volterra

  15. Sarah Parker responded:

I think that the prouducers and the director should keep to the book. Volterra all the way.

  16. Erilu77 responded:

From the picture above & from the vids and pics I’ve seen of Volterra I don’t have a problem w/ it… if for whatever visual, aesthetic or logistic reasons they chose this place. And actually I think it IS prettier… the “clocktower” building especially… & it’s still within the general characteristics described on NM.

Another reason I’d have no problem w/ it is that to begin with Forks was not the place where they shot Twilight either… (the other scenes of NM are being shot in Canada… it STILL isn’t Forks) so what’s the biggie??

If they used Oregon instead of Washington then why not Monte Pulciano instead of Volterra? It is just a perfectly understandable PRACTICAL reason.

  17. ErikaP responded:

I disagree too! Because it should not matter if one town/city is more beautiful than another. Volterra is in the books, not Montepulciano. Where is Chris going to have the fountain and the clock and the long alleyway where Bella is running to Edward?

As my sister put it…it is all about the money! Somewhere to cut corners! Well, at least they decided not to film in Rome, sorry my dear Roman residents, but there you have it!

For all future location directors and the directors themselves…if the script calls for filming in the States, film in the States! If it says film in Volterra, Italy…you film it there! You need to look at all your options and do not always go with what looks GREENER on the other side of the fence! It may not be the correct answer!

*thank you TA Italia and Team Switzerland for the update.

  18. nadia-hh responded:

i think that this looks more of what i pictured volterra to be in the book. its more quaint, old and secluded - more like somewhere a vampire coven would reside.. haha. and i think that it is a good choice for the movie! =D my own thoughts on this of course

  19. Meloni responded:

Meh, They no what they are doing!!

  20. Rilla01 responded:

i think that montepulciano is very beautiful but i feel that it would’ve done better to film new moon in voterra because that’s where the book is based. :)

  21. I Found MY Edward responded:

Truthfully…..do we want them to shoot in every exact place that is exists in the book, or do we want it to look great on screen?? They didn’t shoot Twilight in FORKS! So I’m fine with Montepulciano. I’ve seen pictures, it’s utterly breathtaking! Whatever makes the movie be more visually dynamic works for me!! LOL, I sound like James now…but he had a point! I can’t wait!! YAY NEW MOON!

  22. Emily-June responded:

they changed so much in the 1st movie, so it doesn’t matter if they also do in the 2nd …
i think montepulciano is okay - i’ve been there 2 years ago and it’s a nice italian city that fits to volterra :)

did anybody know when exactly the cast is in italy?

  23. Nikki Cullen responded:

I am sure Chris Weitz will make a good choice in regards to Volterra. I for one am glad they are using montepulciano.
It seems a lot like what i was picturing while reading about volterra

  24. Newborn1863 responded:

Actually why would they bother keeping anything authentic anyway? I mean, Big stars in our small feel movie,I am all for Dakota Fanning as being a good actress,it just seems like Hollywood has gotten a huge taste of the attention the Twilight cast has gotten and everyone wants a piece of it now and with Eclipse right on its heels with the speculation of Drew Barrymore directing,I mean, will anything be really authentic with this mayhem of a movie? I think I may stick to my loyalty to the books and just ban the rest of hollywood from my own personal visions I have recieved by simply “reading.”
    Mood: Saddened

  25. rovity responded:

Wow!!! It’s perfect!! OMG, I cannot wait. This is just so exciting.

  26. she runs with vampires responded:

I’m with Marie - there is only one “Piaza de Priori” and it’s in Volterra. I fully expected changes in venue but why this? Many other people mentioned the changes in Twilight, Well I thought that a lot of those took so much away from the book and the story. How much is too much?

  27. Alice responded:

“more beautiful”?! That’s bs! Volterra is stunning, I’d bet they’ve never even visited it and are just going on Google maps and images. But I would agree that Montepulciano is better suited somewhat to how the book describes it. But there’s still no fountain! So I don’t see the point. Actually, NO, I have no idea why it’s being shot there and not Volterra. They’re just TWO hours drive apart. Grrrrr!

  28. Arianna responded:

they should do with volterra- they are in italy anyway so why to change the original city. but we forgott that this might and might not be truth at all.

  29. gaelle responded:

hoped that it would be shot in volterra, but the other place is soooo beautiful…

after all volterra was my first choice! :(

  30. AnnaS responded:

I am wondering about something: Did S meyer say that she had been in Volterra and chose that place on purpose because it was special to her?

I read that the chopice of Foks was totally “by accident”, it was dued to the weather, she searched the most rainy place in the USA on the internet… She hadn’t been there, had she? from what I had heard, she looked at a couple of pictures on the net and made up her story from there without really minding the real Fork…

So I am wondering about Voltera… If she chose this place randomly, from a couple of pictures seen on the internet, or from an old souvenir trip that you still vaguely remember, maybe there is no reason to be really upset that they chose another location that they felt was better. At least, it’s a place in Italy that will be picked, it will probaly feel the same when you watch the movie (unless you personally know Voltera really well).

I would actually love to know if Voltera in itself is very important to S Meyer.

I’m sure that any place in Italy with the right “age” and feeling will be fine to me when I’ll watch the movie.

  31. serena responded:

volterra è fantastica ricca di storia superba!inoltre i cittadini erano entusiasti ….ora sono demoralizzati!

  32. Daniella responded:

I live in montepulciano, my family have a agriturismo here!!!! I am soooo happy. My friend lives on the square (piazza grande the one in the photo) When will they film, im going!!!!!

  33. cifra responded:

MONTEPULCIANO IS VERY, VERY BEAUTIFUL!!!! THE LOCATION IS PERFECT FOR NEW MOON, YOU CAN BELIEVE IN ME, BECAUSE I LIVE HERE, AND IF YOU NEED SOME INFORMATION ABOUT WHERE TO STAY, CONTACT ME.

  34. cynthia responded:

i really do not care!as long as that part is in i’m happy.whats the problem people?yeah i agree volterra is volterra.i get it,but don’t stress over it!just hope it is as good as the book!

  35. LaLa responded:

Im Sure It Will Be The Samee Tbh.

Does Anyone Know How Long They’re Staying In Italy To Shoot The Scenes ?

    reply ASAP Pleeeeaase !
    Thanks

  36. chevie responded:

it does look very pretty there, :)
I’d like to go there… that’d be the COOLEST. well, i wanna go to voultura (sp??), and like, stand where…. Edward stood…. *faint*, lol.
but this place does look very very beautiful. i love the clock tower (theres something really kewl about clock towers….). ^^
good luck new moon movie maker people!!! :P

  37. Edwards Bella responded:

I understand that Volterra may be a symbol to the book if they shot it there, and it WOULD be really cool seeing where in the book Edward was standing about to emerge into the sunlight of the town square. But if Montepulciano looks more like the book describes, than shouldn’t that be what we want? More exact to the book? Sure, it doesn’t have a fountain, but so what! You think they can’t get a fountain put there?

    MONTEPULCIANO ALL THE WAY !!

  38. Charlene responded:

I was just in Montepulciano last November and it WAS gorgeous. It’s not Volterra like the book says, but Montepulciano will do the book justice.

  39. martina responded:

I was actually there when they were shooting two scenes!! Just like that- we wanted to visit the city .. AND there they were .. a crowd of actors & the car :) Was really some experience!

  40. Mary responded:

I guessed Meyers used Volterra because it started with a “V” like vampire and “Volturi.” Meyers is a mediocre writer–sorry. I am sure the V is what led her to her choice, nothing more. Volterra is probably the least scenic of the Tuscan hill towns, and I have absolutely no memory of a big fountain in the main square. The town is actually sort of grayish–it doesn’t seem to primp like the other hilltowns do. No wonder the set directors chose Montepulciano instead. It is more beautiful.
