TA TALKS BACK: WHAT ABOUT BREAKING DAWN?

Posted February 24th, 2009 By: 54 Comments »

TA fan Queen Bella has posed the question, with all the hype relating to New Moon and Eclipse, what about Breaking Dawn??

What About Breaking Dawn by Stephanie

With New Moon set to be released this year and Eclipse on the horizon…the next question on viewers’ (and readers’) minds is…what about Breaking Dawn? I personally think that Summit is going to do a LOT of editing to keep their pre-teen fan base intact. Breaking Dawn as a novel was such a huge leap from the other three books in terms of adult concepts and ideas, and Stephenie Meyer admitted to having toned it down from what she had originally written as a final sequel (which at that time was to be the only sequel…instead of a saga.)

The Twilight movie was geared towards a young audience, mainly girls in junior high. I felt so out of place in the movie theater with my boyfriend…here we were in our twenties, and there was a gaggle of pre-teen girls in Team Edward shirts shrieking about how hot Robert Pattenson was. What will be these girls’ reaction if the honey moon scene from Breaking Dawn is not only kept in the movie adaptation…but more so…visually created for them to see on the screen?

Shrugs…I don’t see the situations in Breaking Dawn to be a big issue. After all, these same teens read the book, so it isn’t like they aren’t aware of what’s in store for Breaking Dawn. Stephenie handled it in the book in a very discreet and restrained way (though I’m sure for us older readers, we would’ve liked alot more detail), & I don’t have any doubts that when the movie is made, they will handle those questionable moments with sensible care.

  • bri

i dont see it as a huge issue either!! they can have love scenes but not show anything, its not like Steph went into detail anyway!!

they better make the movie and not kill it like they did with the move twilight, i hope they edit it till it sucks and its more of a little teen movie, The books arent aimed at 12 year olds, more to maybe 15 yr olds and higher. Summit has to think about their older fans too.

  • twilightguy1

i really didnt have a problem with shrieking girls the opening of twilight, there wasnt just girls there, there were alot of guys also older couples that goes to show that the twilight saga speaks to everyone..

  • eh…

I don’t agree with the fan base being mainly jr. high girls, although I do think it’s mostly geared toward females. I think that the books are loved by women of all ages. I also think Stephenie did a wonderful job of keeping the novel low-key with the love scenes, and since the studio is committed to being true to the books, I don’t think the honeymoon scenes will be a problem. I do, however, see an issue with the birth scene, as that is really graphic.

  • libra18

I have news for you!! Twilight has many many fans well over the age of 25. In fact, I would bet that the bigger fan base is that.
I anm the mother of a teen. Yes they love it and they read them but I also know many many more adults who are just as obsessed if not more.
I really hope that they do Breaking Dawn. I think they should go all out and make it rated R! Its not all about the kids!

  • cullencrazy08

Why change anything in Breaking Dawn.Young girls are watching it everyday on tv and movies.I hope they dont change a thing

  • gg

I really do hope that they keep the movie appropriet and PG -13 rated. I do not think that it would be a good idea for pre-teen girls to see the advanced part of the honeymoon or when they fist stay in the cottage.

  • taylor

i dont thnk they should shy away from the adult things in the movie because honestly theres not alot becuase staphanie edits it out its not like they have to show the scenes. anyways i want them to stick to the book 100% becuase we all pictured it in our heads and we want to see it some alive.

  • Lauren

I get really irritated when people write that Twilight’s fanbase is mostly preteen. I’m 20 years old and I know tons of people in their 20s who love the books and movie. It’s really an insult to put Twilight in the same category as Disney Channel pre-teen material.

I will be PISSED off if the sex is edited out. If anything, I think it should be fleshed out! I think the Renesmee stuff needs to be toned down, if anything.

  • Holly

I don’t think that the movie was only made for girls in jr.high. I’m a junior in highschool and I’m IN LOVE with the movie. I’m just really interested in what parts they will film and which ones they wont. For when Bella is having the baby so they could just focus the camara on Bella and not the baby crawling out of the womb. I’m sure they will find a lot of way’s to get out of the really intense parts and scenes that are suitable for the young audience. I’m really hoping that they try to put as much detail and as much from the book as they can.

  • ErikaP

I hope they do not change anything for BD. I am in that “older women” age bracket. I’m in my mid-30s and I even cringed when I read the birthing scene and yet, when I saw Twilight for the first time…that’s all I could picture was Kristen being bitten by Renesme (sp?) and having her heart stopped and Robert running around the table like a kid on speed biting every bit of her…transforming her. Yes, it will have to be an “R” rating. That’s all I can see. In addition, the theaters really need to stress not for parents to bring in their child(ren) unless they are 15 or older. When I saw Twilight for the second time, a mother brought in her 2 or 3 yr old into the movie. OMG! My third time was with my younger sister and behind us was a grandmother with 2 children under 5 yrs old!

sorry just had to add that…I was rather angry and thinking “What are they thinking?” “If you can not find a babysitter then you should not go to that movie.”

  • kerri

I hate it when fans of these books are labeled tweens. What the hell is wrong with these reporters? Im 32 years old and rarely find a story that makes me melt the way I did when I read Twilight. If they do Breaking Dawn, I hope they don’t mickey mouse it for the younger audiance. The honey moon part, leave in…detail for detail. Without it, whats the point to all the sexual frustration in the other three books?

  • http://jasperzgurl andrea

i don’t think they should edit it cauze like she didn’t really say anything about HOW they did it. she skipped the details so y don’t they just do that!?! if they edit the most wanted part in the movie besides her changing then it’ll SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Chastity

I don’t think that the content in Breaking Dawn is a big issue. They have PG13 movies in the theatres like that all the time and they aren’t bad. I think that there are ways around doing certain things but still making a great movie.

  • Ashley

I completely agree about Breaking Dawn. It’s honestly not my favorite book of the series (Eclipse!), but it would be so interesting to see it as a movie. Beyond the love parts (those can be insinuated, but nothing shown), how about Renesmee’s birth?

It’s not only quite gruesome, what Edward has to do, but Bella is not supposed to be clothed. It would be quite difficult to film that scene without AT LEAST a PG-13 rating… or even higher!?!?

All I can think about is my younger sister (she’s only 10) – and I’m pushing it already by letting her read Twilight & New Moon (I drew the line before Eclipse).

  • Marianne Robles

I’m sorry, I do not see a problem, except maybe the birth scene would have to be toned down a bit, but even in the book, I pictured it as the camera looking more into the faces of those involved rather than the actual acts themselves – except possibly when Rose first began the incision.

I am a grandmother of both girls and boys ranging from 21 down to 4 and a mother-in-law of the mothers. We are all fans of this saga – yes, boys included just not to the same extent.

Being Mormon myself, I believe that Stephenie did a great job in handling the sex, or lack thereof, in the first three books.

What happens in Breaking Dawn is AFTER marriage. Girls, and boys, of all ages realize that sex happens after that because that’s how they and their siblings, and friends, came to be.

As long as the film stays true to the book, I do not see a problem. There is very little description on sex in the book. We know it is about to begin, but then it’s morning, or whatever, and they are merely resting and contemplating the rest of the day. What is the big deal? We had the first, very sensuous kiss in Twilight. No one had a problem with that – except with some of the out-takes, I hear.

  • twilightguy1

i agree with luaren because alot of my family likes the twilight series my aunts WHO ARE OVER 30 and some of my male cousins..THEY SHOULD NOT EDITE ANYTHING OUT…….IF THE FANS CAN READ AND PICTURE IT IN THERE HEADS WHY CANT THEY SEE IT ON THE BIG SCREEN.however iam a teen so if they rate R they i cant go watch it…..BUT ILL FIND A WAY…….!!!!!!!!!

  • E

in my opinion, i think that they should stick close to the book. with the whole delivery of the baby and the whole section where reneesme is making bella so sick shes basically fighting for her life is a necessity in the movie. its a huge part of the book. so if they happen to make it rated R, i dont think it will affect it much because the fan base it has now will be older by the time Breaking Dawn would come to theaters. It has to be rated R for the movie to have any resemblance to the book whatsoever. thats just my thought on it though.

  • Amy

I am sick and tired of hearing how the Twilight series is “tweens” this & “tween” that! I am a 37 year old mother of 3, and I have enjoyed the entire series!! I have friends in their 40′s & 50′s who are in love with the books as well. The media is quite blind when it comes to the true fan base of this series.

As for BD….why change anything???? There isn’t anything that can be put on screen that hasn’t already been played out in the minds of everyone who’s read the book! I’m sick of people trying to sugar coat things they think *might* cause a controversy. The books are what they are….no need to change that for a movie.

I say bring on BD & let us have our film fantasy complete!

  • twilightmama

Some of the comments here freak me out a bit…just saying.

A movie based on Breaking Dawn will focus more on Bella becoming a vampire and the story afterwards than it will on any sexual context or even the Renesmee factor. Just look at Twilight: how intense were some of the moments preceeding their first kiss and how did they play it down in movie vs. book?

To me it is common sense: Stephenie (and the terrible script writer) are focusing on things OTHER than the romance. The romance is just a side story to the real issue in the books- especially in Breaking Dawn.

  • Mary

Well I have you all beat. I am soon to be 42 inexactly onemonth to be exact. My daughter is 13 and we hav eboth read all 4 books 4 times. And we still want toread them more. It s been soooooooooooo much fun to gush over these books with her. In the beginning I started to read them to see if they were ok for her toread given that they were romance and vampire. I had no idea how detailed a romance it would be or if given it involed a vampire if it would at all be gory. AllI new was that she said that the Twilight books were takingover her schooland she just ahd toread them. So a few chapters into Twilight to screen it for her I was totally hooked. I don’t think that Breaking Dawn willhave any issues with the honeymoon. I do think it will be intersting to see what the do with the birth of Renesmee. After all in the book it decribes it as that she is clawing her way out and Edward has to use his vampire teeth to help the delivery. So I think age has no limits with these books and my daughter even knows 3 or 4 boys that have read the series. I personally can’t wait for Eclipse and Breaking Dawn.

  • EmmaKateCullen

make it rated M or m15you can have good bits in it with detail but not full grousome because they still wanna mke sure teens can watch it and maybe some tweens if there alowed so then we get detail the sex and bith scene then older fans as in parents and uncles auntys etc not tht there old but u no wht i meen will like it more too than if it was pg or pg13 or watever and so will we and think about this would you rather have

a – rated pg13 kiddie disney channel move rated pg with little highschool musical fans if vanessa is in it and giggling and being little freaks and crying and ruining the atmosphere and the special scenes and moments

b- rated m pretty normal 1 or to tweens with there parents teenagers adults all mostly mature not giggling when someone says penis or watever the movie will have good detail with the sex and birth scene so you can really relate to the book and compare wht you imagined it like etc so good intense bits romantic bits not stupid butting scenes just cuz little kids might see two people laying in bed together woop woop watever im surre they have seen worse iin everyday like or even watching television and if they go see it they have mostlikley read the book so hey kno what it is so whatsthe big deal

c- rated r teens tweens cant see it adults and 18> can it would probs be very graphic who would wanna see tht watch knocked up then tell me if you wanna see the birth seen with a baby ripping out of someone etc etc or would you rather have a milder version hmmm

    replyy,.

  • http://TalkingTwilight.com TalkingTwillight

In the books Stephanie leaves a lot up to our imagination as far as what goes down on their honeymoon that is sexual. So, if they write the movie the same as the book it will be very romantic and your imagination, whatever level you are at can take care of the rest. So, it could be very sweet or very steamy! Either way they need to stick to the books. I also think that they should make Breaking Dawn into 2 movies so nothing gets lost in the translation of the book!

  • http://www.myspace.com/Beautifull_Angel101 Brie

NOOOO they have to keep Breaking Dawn the way it is! I maybe 17, but I know women & men between 18-25 who love twilight! It’s no big deal, if they don’t wanna see something like that than they don’t have to go see it!

  • Bre

I honestly don’t see what the big deal is. This book is a good example to young adults, teens, and preteens everywhere. We are always telling our young adults to wait until marriage and that is what Edward and Bella did. This is so stupid the one hollywood relationship that is done right and we try to tone it down to the point where teens still think is ok to screw with anyone they want to and that is ok. Wel i think this is bs and if they were so worried about this part of the book then why is it so many other movies rated PG13 have so much more sexualness than this. For instance Titanic and American Pie, what is up with that i think this is just another way for the people in this nation to pretend they are all for this. You watch the next movie that these people put out will be everything but virginal.

  • Tia

Libra18 I AGREE, make it PG-13 if a rating of R is too much (we have to remember that Stephenie won’t let it get that far), but Summitt will walt disney the whole idea and make it pre-teen friendly. And I think it deserves a higher mature rating, not juts because of the honeymoon scene, but others like Emmett’s sexual comments and Renesmee’s birth. It’s one thing to read them on a page, but a whole different agenda to watch it being perform on the big screen.

Although I would prefer a little “riskay”, I’ll take whatever. I’m just happy that all of the books are getting made! The bigger question is now that Breaking Dawn is getting made, will it be made into one (and better be longer than 2 hour movie) or will they follow Stephenie’s advice and make it into a 2 part movie? Hmmmmmmmmmm…….

  • AMBER

i agree with a few of u guys, they read the book they know whats going to happen…and pluse me and al my friends are 18, so it doesnt matter to me, its not only little girls who watch this movie, stopping thinking about them, and i seen plenty of pg13 movies with sex sceans but they just dont show nothing really nasty that would make it rated R, so i know for this movie, they could make it pg 13 its posssablie
and plus by the time breaking dawn comes out some of them are already going to be 18 or 17…..
and u need to be 17 and older 2 get into a Rated R movie lol

damn u little girls get older already

they really need to film breaking dawn its my favorite book and i will die if they dont lmao

  • April

I will tell the truth I am 27 had never even heard of Twilight before the movie came out. I watched the movie based on the previews and thought it was good. It made me want to read the books because as we all know movie people like to leave out huge chunks of the books or switch things around. As we have learned from another series that is being made into movies. So I went and bought all the books and got hooked and sucked in and read them all in one weekend. I love this story. As an adult I do wish that it would have been more detail in Breaking Dawn. But I realize the audience that Stephanie was after it was well written.

I believe that they should stick to the book. There is NOTHING in there that can’t be shown within the movie. As in the birthing scene there are movies out there that have shown worse! And we all know what those movies are. If they edit out to much I believe that it would make the movie too “young”. I hope that the director and script writer realize this ahead of time. I do know that they can’t include everything from the book in the movie but I do hope they retain most of the book this is the book I want to see made into a movie. I don’t care if they rate it pg 13 i would still take my 8 year old daughter to see it because I would have explained out what has happened and what might go on in the movie before hand. And I would answer any questions that might have come up afterwards.

  • Roxanne

well honestly i dont think they should skip the honeymoon scene because that the part where our imagination gets the best of use….
i also agree that they should stick to the book and make it into 2 movie so nothings left out.
AND not puting in the honeymoon is just not right so what if the everyone doesnt want it to show up its like one of the main parts

  • Chloe Lautner

I think that they will come up with something suitabe for Breaking Dawn if the do decide to make it a movie – which i hope they do.

  • Viki

I’m just glad that Robert hinted, while on the red carpet, that they are going to make BD. By the time it is filmed all those “tweens” will be old enough to handle the glossed over sex and birth portions. Remember we never “saw” anything during the birth because Jacob wouldn’t look, we only “heard.”

  • CarlisleRocks

You can see worse scenes on any daytime soap opera than were in Breaking Dawn! There are discreet ways to handle any situation and Hollywood knows all the ways to get around it! Most of those shrieking pre-teen girls know more than the older adults! If they’ve read the book they can handle the movie!

  • Kristy

i think breaking dawn should b nc 17 or rated r. i would love to see the book as a movie but only exactly as the book is written because i think the book was awesome and i agree with the article because it was hell sitting by alot of teens well some of them were taking pictures of the film and start screaming when jacob came on i saw it 4 times and each time i had to tell some one to shut up.

  • http://lholliswinfirst.com cellolover

First — yes!Twilight is for all ages of readers who simply enjoy the story. I don’t know if any of you listens to National Public Radio. Recently, a literature professor at Georgetown University did a short review of the Twilight series (she’s read the first two)and admitted that she was absolutely “bitten and smitten”. Second — has anyone else wondered how Bella’s transformed appearance will be achieved? Just lots of makeup? I don’t think that will be enough. Maybe it should be animated like a great Japanese anime (sp?) piece. What do you think?

  • courtney

i dont see the big issue of the honey moon scene being on screen,
most teenage girls have seen movies with sex scenes it.
it won’t be that much different, it’ll just be a movie about a book they love with sex scenes like any other movie.

  • Jennifer

I think they should stay true to the book (which is kind of the whole point to a book adaptation) and then give it the rating that’s most appropriate to the film. Being a mother of 4 kids, I feel it’s my job to decide what I should or shouldn’t let my kids watch. The love scenes between Bella and Edward were not detailed in a way that would be deemed inappropriate and even they were, it’s the parents job to decide if their child is mature enough for it. They are married and in madly in love. They were virgins until their honeymoon and showed an enormous amount of self control up to that point. Doesn’t that count for anything?

  • imatruetwilightfannotsomebandwagonjumperwhoonlylikeditonceitwaspopular

Breaking Dawn, if they make it into a movie, will be….hard.
i say, get those dammmn ten year olds outta the theater.
if you havent read the book, you shouldnt even go.

  • Selbe

there only on new moon! give them time people!

  • bella

I don’t think it’s that big of a deal, it’s not even graphic in the book, I mean, you know what’s going on, but it’s not like it goes into detail. And they could just like black out then show the next morning. like they could black out right after edward (rpatz) says forever and show her waking up and him being like how horribly are you hurt, i know that’s not dirrect quote but just trying to make a point. plus, a lot of movies that are pg-13 heve that in them anymore…. Some Examples: Just Friends and The Man in the Iron Mask.

  • ijlll

if she wrote in the book, and people read it, then it should be fine in the movie=]

  • Mella

AAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!! God they better not ruin it. I kinda want to see some things on there(wink, wink)

  • http://TwilightersAnonymous Gwen

Add my name to the list of older fans. I’m 55.
My daughter and I shared this experience with friends and co-workers of all ages.
The appeal is ROMANCE, whether anticipating it, enlivening it, or remembering it.
If the Shrek writers can figure out how to appeal to all age groups, so can the Breaking Dawn writers.

  • ilovethesaga

I know most girls in junior high (including me) will go see it anyway. Probably against their parent’s rules.

  • Libby

I think people will end up making Breaking Dawn a bigger deal than it really is. First of all, if you read the books, you already know what happens. Has anyone watched T.V. lately? The stuff they show on prime time shocks me even the commercials are pretty intense and I’m in my mid-20′s. So don’t think these kids are completly innocent. I hope they don’t butcher the movie and I definitely think I would like the honeymoon scenes to stay true to the book by not showing what exactly happens, as much as I wanted Stephenie Meyer to go into a little more detail when I was reading it, I think it would take away from the magic and passion I created in my head when I read the book. Also, I do think they should split Breaking Dawn into two movies, I don’t think two hours could do it justice and besides it would bring in more money having 5 movies instead of 4!

  • Tia

Selbe, we realize that they are only on New Moon, but the post called for us to discuss Breaking Dawn!

  • http://TwilightersAnonymous Gwen

You are right, Libby; there is SO much going on in that book, and my life NEEDS something to look forward to, 5 books instead of four is the way to go. I hope our stars aren’t grandparents by the time they get them made, tho!!! And they’d better not change the stars!

  • Laura

I totally agree with Kerri, the first three books was all about the sexual frustruation and BD brings that to a close when Bella and Edward get married and do what married couples do. And.. not only that, why can hollywood make films and show quite graphically these killing scenes, horror flicks but when a good storyline comes along they want to completely take out the whole reason for the story! I would love for Summit to do a survey or keep track of age groups that go see Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and BD. They might be totally shocked at the numbers and the majority is probably not in the tweens. If they follow BD to the story line, there is nothing in there (other than Renesmes birth) that should be toned down because I thought Stephanie did a great job with allowing the readers not only to read about the honeymoon but also give us a chance to form our own image of what really happened without her putting it on paper. Of course, being 40 years old, I would have liked more detail, but I thought she did a great job and Summit should not take any of that out. If they do, they will have a Twilight uprising :) And…I don’t think Stephanie would allow that.

I am also totally frustrated with Summit and anyone else who thinks that the Twilight Saga is for pre-teens. Just because a book is about teenagers doesn’t mean that an older person won’t enjoy it. I am 40 years old and I am totally obsessed with the story and have read the books several times. And.. this is the first movie of my life where I went to the theatre and paid full price to see it 4 times. Even with the Harry Potter movies that I loved, I only saw them once and I waited until the dvd came out.

Summit/Stephanie if you are reading this… don’t let your TA fans down!!!

  • christina

I dont see what the problem is about the honeymoon scene. film makers have found ways to portray a situation without full detail. they can just skim through that night. they dont have to really show anything major. like hooking up is one thing. that should be fine.

as far as the movie…idc if its 3 or 4 hours long. they better stuff the movie with just about everything! i want to see all the action!

  • edelacruz

Okay guys, didn’t parents throw a hissy fit after Harry Potter 6 came out because Harry decides that he wasn’t going to return to school so he can hunt Voldemort? C’mon! I see their perspectives – kids are super impressionable and I can understand their concerns, but that’s what the MPAA gives ratings for. BD can EASILY be Rated R. I just don’t think that the fans who are adult enough to handle the content should be penalized for the tweens. And lets have an OUNCE of faith in our young – I remember when I was a kid and I saw Dirty Dancing. I loved that movie, but I wasn’t exactly going to go run off with the nearest dancer or waiter because it was in the movie. Clearly, Stephenie Meyer did not intend for 10 year olds to read BD…think about it – she’s a mother too, and I seriously doubt that she wants children reading about sex and physical relationships. But her characters grew and so the STORY grew too. It is up to parents to determine whether or not their kids should see it. People who are worried about content can simply NOT READ IT (or not WATCH the movie). As for the younger kids, regardless of the movie rating, they’re going to find a way to see it. Remember being a kid and sneaking in to Rated R movies or clubs when you weren’t old enough? The young always find a way. But I will say that Summit should stick to the book. The honeymoon, the birth of Renesmee and Edward turning Bella , the hunting, the first night at the cottage…these are all key scenes that readers want to see. Either way – Summit owes much of its present (and future success) to Twilight Saga Fans…they have a responsibility to do the movies RIGHT.

  • http://www.msn.com Marina

honestly the forth book was my favorite! Sure i am like in love with robert pattinson but i love the bond between him and bella its magical! If they get rid of the honeymoon scenes the movie will make no sence. so if the do put them in just put the rating up and only allow older viewers. duh!

  • crystal

BD is going to be the toughest one yet. There are just certain details that have to be included in the film that if left out, well…it will pretty much be an epic fail. It’s just a question of wheather or not the younger audience is mature enough to handle the content used in the movie As well as truly appreciate the novels.

  • Clarissa

We already have to have HP7 in 2 parts! Not Breaking Dawn too! ugh i cant wait 6 months between each part of the movie! especially if theyre going to split it right during the good part! Where jacob stops his point of view and bella starts hers again! Right after the baby is born and bellas getting turned! No they cant do that! Cause thats were they would break it too! I cant wait for that! no keep it as one movie! I dont care if i have to sit through a 6 hour movie! I dont care! just keep it as 1!

  • karen

i hope that they do make breaking dawn cause it is the best one and they said that it would be to much for adults but teens know about the birds and the bees their doing much more than they did in the book

  • Francesca

I’ve been hearing all these rumors that eclipse and breaking dawn will be made into one movie. It better not be, I will be so pissed if it is. Breaking Dawn is my favorite part of the whole saga with all the new characters and changes. I hope they keep in those scenes because honestly those are the ones that stick out in your mind. The honeymoon scene should be easy to cover in a PG-13 movie since as everyone said Stephanie already toned it down (even though she shouldn’t have!). The birth scene will be tricky but they better make it as good as the book or close to, that’s like the most pivital moment in the book. It could go to R but that’s okay because I can see it(: haha
and i agree with making it 2 movies! That just means more twilight movies to watch!!
