NOVEL NOVICE – THE ‘OTHER’-ING OF THE TWILIGHT FAN

Posted December 13th, 2008 By: 4 Comments »

Novel Novice Twilight presents “The ‘Other’-ing of the Twilight Fan” – an academic paper on Twilight, written by our own Ms. Truitt.

The thesis of the paper explores how female fans, particularly female Twilight fans, are misrepresented in various popular culture outlets.

This is a result of two main issues: (1), the line between fan and fanatic is often difficult to define, thus large fandoms are often written off as obsessive, dangerous and unable to think for themselves. (2), Female fandoms suffer this cruel and uninformed misrepresentation the most. While society has accepted the buying power of female consumers, it repeatedly tries to write off this power by declaring it a product of superficial desires.

This paper is not meant to prove or disprove if Twilight is a “good” book; rather, it aims to show how female fans of all sorts are mislabeled.

Now, Novel Novice Twilight would like to share the paper with the Twilight community at large. You can view it here

Very interesting paper. Let us know what you think of this article…

I loved this paper because it does an amazing job of describing how twilight fans think. We are not brainless, hormonal, teenagers…in fact MOST of us are not even teenagers! I am 20 years old and a university student and i absolutely love this series! That does not mean that i live in a dream world or that i have no concept of the real world, on the contrary although i do admit to being obsessed with the series and i adore edward, i know that it is just a fictional story. It is nice to PRETEND like its real while reading it! The world is an ugly enough place already, why not escape it every once in a while with a good story?!

I wrote a pop culture essay on twilight a few days ago for my final, it’s so weird to find one on here. I loved how this essay supports all of the twilight fans, and how we should not be stereotyped and just like elias twins said, we are mostly NOT TEENAGERS (i am 20 too!) I just hate how everyone gives us crap about what we love, if they hate it so much, why should they care WE like it you know? I also noticed that star trekkies don’t get as much crap as us twilighters do. Can someone say SEXIST?

I’m so glad someone wrote an article about female fans. Even though I am a teenager I have an actual point of view the could be respected by adults and not just attracted to Twilight for shallow reasons. Many of my classmates love Twilight also and agree we are not just some “bubble-gum lip-glossers.” Actually we prefer mint gum. :D And I don’t know any respectable person at my school who likes Clay Aiken. The female fan needs to be respected and supported at any ages. Not just written of as a crazed person without a real point of view.

I liked your paper a lot. Your description of ‘Twilight’ as a recent pop culture phenomenon was very well written. What I missed, however, was your own point of view. It would have been nice to get your own definition of the female fan as a conclusion for your paper. The popular is an essential part of the changing landscape of modernity, influenced by and influencing more ‘serious’ forms of culture, and should be studied more often! I really hope you will continue your work!
