PENINSULA DAILY NEWS: BELLA’S GAS CAP GOES MISSING

Posted January 18th, 2009 By: Team Switzerland 18 Comments »

The Peninsula Daily News has a new article about how the gas cap from Bella’s car has been stolen. Who do they think took the chrome gas cap? An overzealous Twilight fan, of course.

More details below:

Somebody has pilfered the gas cap off the town’s fictional heroine’s pickup.

Forks Chamber of Commerce officials think it was an overly-zealous fan who pinched the chrome gas cap off Bella’s pickup a few weeks ago, said Mike Gurling, Forks Visitor Center office manager.

“We are guessing some fan wanted an extra special souvenir,” he said.

The pickup is on display at the center as an example of what Isabella Swan, the famed heroine of the quartet of fictional Twilight books, would have driven around Forks, where the novels are set.

The books have drawn droves of fans to the town, Gurling said.

More than 1,000 people showed up for the Sept. 13, 2008, Stephenie Meyer Day in honor of the author of the books.

The date was selected as Bella’s birthday.

Twilight and sequels New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn spin the tale of star-crossed lovers Bella and Edward.

Bella, a 17-year-old girl who moves to Forks to live with her father, the town’s police chief, falls in love with the teen vampire, Edward Cullen.

Where’s the gas cap?

The chamber hasn’t pursued the culprit but would be interested to know where the cap ended up and why, he said.

The chamber heard rumors that the gas cap had been placed on the Internet auction site eBay, but it is no longer listed there, if it ever had been.

The pickup was purchased and donated by a group of Forks business people headed by Bruce Guckenberg, who owns Sully’s Drive-In.

The 1952 Chevrolet pickup was spray-painted red and towed to sit in front of the Visitor Center.

“It had one of those old-style chrome caps,” Guckenberg said.

Gurling said the chamber is hoping to replace the gas cap — not that the pickup needs it, since the engine doesn’t run anymore.

The reasoning is more aesthetic, he said.

The removal of the screw-on gas cap leaves a hole on the passenger side of the pickup.

“Now we wish we would have written something cryptic in there about if someone stole our gas cap,” Gurling said.

“We’d like to get a new one, but we’re not really sure where to do that.”

The pickup is set up as a photo opportunity for fans of Bella, and on Stephenie Meyer Day, it served as a centerpiece for the festivities.

The office stays busy even in the off-season.

A fairly constant stream of visitors still come in every day — many of them drawn by the books, Gurling said.

Just keeping up with all the visitors have kept the group from looking into getting a new gas cap for the pickup, he added.

SOURCE

(Thanks Katrina)

As much as I think it’s funny that Twilight fans are so die hard that they’d take the gas cap off the truck, it’s a little sad too. But, that’s not to say I wouldn’t buy it on e-bay if someone listed it…cough, cough.

What do you think of this story? Do you find it funny, or do you think it’s a little overboard to take the gas cap? Would you buy it off of e-bay if you saw it listed?

Am I the only one who caught that they have Edward’s last name entirely wrong in that article? I actually stopped reading at that point, just blown away by the inaccuracy and the fact that no one checked it before publishing it. Proof read, for the love of Edward CULLEN!

  • Kimberly (again)

Correction: The source appears to have it right. Who typed it up for this republication then? :\

  • Allie

Actually, kimberly, if you check the source on the actual website where this article was published, you’ll see that it was spelled correctly. As for the stolen truck part, I think it’s a little sad. Sure, I would love to have it but I wouldn’t steal it! The truck is a tribute to bella, why would someone want to vandalize it like that?

  • Marie

how sad. i mean, the GAS CAP?! crazed Twilighters indeed. i am a DIGNIFIED Twilighter! lol :]
i hope they get it back..for the sake of Bella Cullen.

  • she runs with vampires

It is sad. This little town has done so well due to Twilight and it really angers me how some people think it’s okay to just walk in there and steal. Do these people have a conscience? Do they have a soul? Are they really going to brag to friends that they stole it off the truck in FORKS? I sincerely hope that these people are not members of this site BUT if you are: I beg you to return the gas cap so that you can live guilt-free. Please don’t give Twilighters a bad name by stealing from FORKS? Return the gas cap, do the right thing.

  • nadia-h

    ok…
who the hell would steal a frekin gas cap?? this probably isnt a twilight fan, but someone looking to exploit the twilight fandom’s love for all things twilight.
    *sigh*

  • Emily Launtner

    IT WAS ME!!

    BAAHAHAHAHA!!

    I STOLE IT!!

LOL jokes, I didn’t. So what!? Its just a gas-cap, no one would have cared if it wasn’t a famous car.
Let the person have their fun. Yes I know its stealing..but seriously? people are gonna get worked up over a gas cap!? come on people.

    EM xx

  • AllisCullen

I’m sad that a fellow Twilighter would STEAL something, for the simple fact that the small town of Forks has put up with a lot from us, and this is just totally disrespectful.

  • spiritblue

… how sad especially since it isn’t even the truck from the movie, just one they bought and painted to look like it… i believe in karma and the person who took the gascap is piling up some very negative karma.

  • Shorty

Congrats to Forks Washington for capitalizing on Twilight’s success. That’s cool. Stealing a gas cap is NOT cool. Bad form.

  • kerri

Yeah, it’ll dffinately get sold on EBAY. Sad, sad people.

  • ~Me~ ;]

I think this is HILARIOUS. XD
But I can’t believe somebody would actually do that…

  • Lauren

ok my personnal opion… whoever stole it has to be the stupidest person underneath Edward (private joke) why would anyone want to steal a gas cap? it was bascically the town’s fault. they should have a secruity camera or something to make sure this doesn’t happen. But i have to admit… that is pretty funny!

  • Olivia

Yep, prolly a Twilight hater (juss jelous that their obbsesion isnt as poular. Shame shame) Kewl of Forks to have that kinda thing, tho. I’d sure as heck go ^^

  • http://www.msn.com Marina

Its so sad ya cant people love twilight without haveing to steal something. I have to admit that it is really funny. some people will do anything to get a peice of the twilight action!

  • RenezzmeeKarlie

I agree with Alice Cullens post. Very disrespectful. There are some Sad people out there.

    Great site.

  • AllyCullen

Tsk. Tsk. Who would do such a thing. I believe it is quiet funny but who would do that to Bella’s truck, it’s a symbol of Twilight and the devotion little Forks has to that book.
Dear me, what has the world come too? You know, if I had the chance and was really hyped up on sugar and it was 2:00 in the morning I would have done something like that. C’mon, I’m a true twilighter. What do you expect?
But I’m glad that Forks has a problem with this, it shows that they care about Twilight and I say “GOOD ON YAH FORKS!! YOU ROCK!”
