PETA2.COM: WHY WAS ‘TWILIGHT’ GIVEN THE AWARD FOR ‘MOST ANIMAL-FRIENDLY MOVIE’?

Posted February 2nd, 2009 By: Team Switzerland 20 Comments »

You may remember a few days ago, we posted an article about how Peta2.com awarded ‘Twilight’ with a 2008 Libby award for being the ‘Most Animal-Friendly Movie’. Sure, it’s a great honor, but many of you were left wondering: How can a movie about vampires killing animals instead of humans possibly win an award for the ‘Most Animal-Friendly Movie’? Well, wonder no more, because Ashleigh from Peta2.com has addressed those questions head on:

peta2 awarded Twilight with the Libby Award for “Most Animal-Friendly Movie” because the movie promoted vegetarianism. Bella eats only vegetarian foods in the movie (when she is at the diner in Forks with Charlie she orders a veggie burger, and in Port Angeles with Edward she eats mushroom ravioli). Bella also gives her Dad grief for eating steak and Stephenie Meyer is served a vegetarian platter during her cameo.

Even though “vegetarian vampires” is a misnomer, no animals were harmed in the movie. We know that no one will be killing animals to satisfy their vampiric thirst as a result of seeing Twlight, but we do hope everyone will follow Bella’s example and give vegetarianism a try! For more information on vegetarianism please see this webpage: http://www.peta2.com/p2vsk2_flash/.

Thanks to the lovely Ashleigh for clearing up all those questions.

At first, it seemed a little ironic, but I think the answers she gave were great, and I totally think that ‘Twilight’ deserved that award. Maybe we can do it again this year!

What do you think of these reasons, TAers? Does this help clear things up a little more for you? And what do you think of the award now that we have some more background – do you agree with the award?

I think this is complete bull. Bella might have eaten meatless foods in the movie, but that was no way promoting vegetarianism. Those scenes were so brief and subtle that they probably flew over the average viewers’ head. The best animal-friendly film should have been something like Marley and Me, which promoted animal adoption outright.

lol i think the movie was just trying to promote healthy eating cause seriously no high school i know has a salad bar in there cafeteria plus teens today still have obesity problems so thats all i think it was

  • twilighter56

I can see now why they would give Twilight the award. i agree with veronica pomar about promoting healthy eating. But nobody is going to go out and kill any animals after they see the movie, that is for sure. But it is not that big of a deal about what people notice. It is the awarders opinion.

apparently no one at Peta read the book. What’s the first thing Bell cooks for Charlie, everybody? I agree, that they were just promiting healthy eating, not vegetarianism.

  • Gabby

I would love to go vegetarian, but my parents don’t really like it, they say vegetarians are starving themselves by only eating veggies and all, but i think other wise. lol I think being a vegetarian would be better, because baby pigs and cows, are being killed for veal, and baccon and all, chickens/turkeys are being killed for (obviously) chicken and turkey, and its in some cases it gross. And who knows… Maybe if more people go vegetarian if might help with polution and global warming all. So i think this is something people should really think about! ****(sorry to anyone who thinks other wise)****

Bella was not a vegetarian in the book and, although I am a vegetarian, I didn’t really get why she was one in the movie.
Marley and me is about a dog who was the “worst dog in the world” not exactly promoting animal adoption. I am a doggy foster mom with 5 adopted dogs of my own and after seeing Marley, I might think twice about adoption.
Also, Gabby, if you want to be kind to our animal friends, you should check out some vegetarian websites. Peta is kinda over the top when it comes to animal rights, but they have a great website. The info about how chickens live before they are brutally murdered is why I stopped eating meat. I certainly do not look like I am starving myself. LOL. There are a lot of good websites that can help you show your parents why eating vegetarian is really a lot better for you than eating our abused animal friends.

Ooooo I see. Makes more sense. Hmm. I didn’t necessrily think they were “promoting” vegetarian lifestyle with their choices in food tho. Maybe just a fun coincedence in keeping with the vegetarian Vampire theme. Or Maybe Kristen is vegetarian so they served her only vegetables. Oh well, who knows.

does anyone remember in the very beginning of the movie where a deer is stalked and attacked by a vampire?

  • RachelCullen

well I thought that that was just plain stupid.
hello? the deer at the beginning of the movie? that was an animal!
and it wasn’t as if they were vegetarians in the book; they weren’t even necessarily in the movie, they just happened to have food that didn’t have meat.
I still don’t get it. Although I am stoked that twilight got an award, even if it was as ironic as this one…xx

  • Kelly E

hmm… I congratulate Peta for paying such close attention to the details of the movie, but somehow I don’t think that the average viewer would have picked up on the vegetarian values.

  • Ashlie

im thrilled that Twilight got an award!!
im a vegetarian, and the film did not state anything about ordering meat burgers etc. my high school has a salad bar like theirs.
the award was for the film not the book as well so you cant really complain a bout that either.
i agree with everyone who is happy that twilight got an award, ignoring the irony!! =D

I think it’s great! I love Twilight and Peta2 so it’s pretty great for me xD

Well I am a veggie and when in the book I think most of her meals are meat I did notce how veg. they were in the movie (allthough Bella does order Mushroom Ravioli in the book too (or Mushroom pasta dish).

I am all for promotion of being a veggie. But I agree the shot at the begining and the fact that the Vampires do kill animals kinda well defeats it they blaitently are said to eat animals. There is however a clear distinction between animal rights and vegetarianism.

But I liked how they kept the term ‘vegetarian Vampires’ and forgive me but the use of tofu would put anyone off being a veggie. But their really are limited options for veggies that truth be told these are the 2 standard veggie meals offered in the states in most places. so def liking the award allthough the meaning should be clearly explained

I don’t think the movie was promoting vegetarianism. What their intentions for making Bella seem like one is, I have no clue. But I’d like to say that I did notice the foods they gave her. The first time I watched the movie, actually. I noticed right away that it never showed her eating meat.

I look closely at little details like that though, so maybe it’s just me. I dunno. lol.

  • vonna

i love the movie twilight, one of the first things i noticed was that bella only eats veggies, after reading the book i was a bit confused to why she eats normally in the book and only eats veggies in the movie. i think kristen herself preferred to eat veggies in a way to send a message to the world. well it worked, coz im also now a vegetarian! y’all should really try it!!

  • ann

bella only ordered mushroom ravioli cos it was the first thing on the menu, she was too buzy staring into edwards golden eyes to worry about what she wanted to eat. kristen stewart is a vegetarian, thats why she only ate veggies. she was trying to make a point and defend her choices. im proud of her!

  • dèvon

stephenie meyer is a vegetarian. she’s also in the movie, theres a scene where the waitress at the diner say’s ”here’s your veggie plate, stephenie”.

  • Yings22

I’m a little confused by this. Yeah, Belle is a vegetarian in the movie… but the rogue vampires (Laurent, James and Victoria) still kill people in the movie. There’s even a scene where Laurent says “let’s not play with our food” when they corner a guy on a boat. Last time I checked, humans are animals, too. Kingdom animalia, Phylum chordata, Class mammalia, Order Primates, Family Hominidae. And I don’t think we get exempt the way fish are frequently exempt from the vegetarian rule… we’re at least mammals.

  • Olivia

Kristen Stewart is a vegetarian, and won't eat meat (or even pretend to) for the movies she is in. Fans will take notice of what she eats in the movie, after all they watch the movies over and over again(like I do). I think Peta is smart to award Twilight with this honor because they know what a huge following of young people it has, and young people are the revolution, very rarely do old people change.
I disagree with Edward when he implies that a vegetarian diet never satisfies, I never crave meat.

  • Briannawi8

She eats chicken in Breaking Dawn.
