REELZ CHANNEL: FANSITE ADVICE- IF HE GETS NOTHING ELSE RIGHT, CHRIS WEITZ HAD BETTER NOT SCREW UP…

Posted March 25th, 2009 By: Evie 16 Comments »

Reelz Channel recently asked the ‘Twilight’ fansites what advice they would give to Chris Weitz. Read below for what Twilighters Anonymous told him:

TwilightersAnonymous.com

“If he gets nothing else right, Chris Weitz had better not screw up … the CGI and the break-up scene.”

Below is more specific advice for Chris:

-BE.A.FAN.OF.THE.BOOK. Know it, feel it, and see it from the fans’ perspective. In fact, consider visiting some fan sites to see what they have to say.

-While the pack’s emergence in this book is significant, please don’t make this just a CGI showcase with crappy, exploding werewolves.

-There should be a heavy accent on the events leading up to, and including, Edward leaving, and also Bella and Edward’s dramatic reunion. This is a love story about what you do when your very reason for existing disappears; Bella’s not just your average teenage girl with a broken heart.

-Please don’t think of New Moon as just a cash cow! Many of us have imagined this book in our head for years.

-Find as much humor as possible in the midst of this emotional roller coaster. It cannot be so dark that it’s not enjoyable.

To read the rest of the advice, click here.

I (of course) think we have the best advice. I think we need to have the dramatic break-up, and at the same time it needs to have the beautiful reunion highlighted. My favorite is probably to be a fan of the book though.

What do you think of the advice from Twilighters Anonymous? Do you have any better advice?

Excellent points. I hope he listens. The wolves are important, yes, but secondary. This book is gut-wrenching with its pain and redemption. I hope he understands this is what the fans are expecting. If he gets it right, New Moon could leave Twilight in the dust as far as receipts and fan loyalty go. And that is saying alot.

Mr. Weitz: You probably won’t see this, but please listen; this is a love story. Please make that the priority. Anything else is just wrong. If you have any doubts, ASK STEPHENIE!!!

While I agree that the breakup scenes and CGI cannot be screwed up, I’d also like to add that the Italy scenes need to be played out as in the book. I’ve got images of Alice peeling out in her yellow Turbo Porsche from the airport, aerial shots of the Porsche cruising through the roads of Tuscany with “Volterra” in the background as well as Bella fighting her way through the crowds with the clock tower screaming in the background as she makes her way to Edward! There is just no margin for error in these scenes!

Yes, agreed with all of the above… article and comments. Despite not really WANTING to feel it but I am EXPECTING the gut-wrenching hole that exists in Bella’s “stomach”. We should feel her pain and then let Jacob slowly pull us out of it. Then, inject us with the return of Alice (I love, love, love Charlie and Alice’s conversation when Bella supposed to be sleeping on the couch) and send us flying off to Italy in a race for their lives!!! PLEASE… MAKE US FEEL IT… KEY WORD: FEEL! Good luck!

Wow. I hope Chris gets this! Every one of my concerns was mentioned. The best piece of advice I read was, Keep Stephanie involved. But, to my shock, no one mentioned the vital moment when Rosalie tells Edward Bellas dead. I want to see the whole scene unfold! From Alices vision to Edward dumping his cell phone into the garbage in South America. It would segway nicely into the cliff diving scene, dont you think?

  • TheColdWoman

Great suggestions TA! I also liked TwilightMoms who suggested to keep Edward out of the movie just like he is absent in the book. As much Team Edward as I am, I am more Team New Moon, Team Twilight, etc. Stick to Stephenie’s story!

  • Emily

I also agree with all that has been said! My advice for Chris would be to start it off by showing us how close Edward and Bella have become…to be able to see their conversations, how they bounce off of each other. I want to see a nice build up before he leaves her. I also look forward to the break up scene (duh!) The Cliff Dive. When Alice comes back to get Bella. Lastly, Italy mostly though I personally want to see when they fly back home and how tired Bella is but how she never allows her self to go to sleep because she thinks Edward will just leave her again.

I WANT TO SEE IT ALL!!!

maybe it’s a mom thing, but the twilight moms site is one of the few to mention the importance of jacobs scenes. even though i want bella with edward, i find myself rereading jacobs scenes the most.
after he returns the motorcycle to charlies house, and done arguing, and bella wants to comfort and hug him and edward won’t let her, when his face crumples in agony, that scene so touched me.
and the one when bella is preparing to leave with alice to rescue edward, and jacob is handing her pen and paper to leave the note for charlie, and all the while he is tearing up and begging her not to go.
helping her even though its breaking his heart. it was so emotional.
a lot is said of bellas pain and edwards, but jake was not a side character to me. his feelings also stand out in the series.
on a lighter note, jacob picking her up from the high school on his motorcycle would definitely be fun to see.

i came specifically to voice the fact that i REALLY hope they don’t minimize jake’s part in this book just because people want to see more edward, but el up there already said it. (and i’m not a mom, el, haha). i’m a big fan of jake-not for bella, but in general-and if they scale his part in this down i will be SO disappointed. i understand that the series revolves around bella & edward, but bella says it best (and i paraphrase a LOT here) “if not for jacob, i don’t know what you’d have come home to.” he’s not just a little part-he’s a big deal and big part of the reason bella WAS able to be with edward.

  • Kevin

my main problem would be if he tries to slut it up (he DID direct American Pie afterall) or ruins the ending like he did with The Golden Compass (or should i say, ruins the ending or lackthereof). Atleast with TGC, he wrote the screenplay, and he isn’t wiht New Moon, so there’s hope for that. i just hope there’s not too much lost in translation.. or adaptation lol.. i know it’s a big book, but that doesn’t mean too much, books are better with descriptions because you can actually pound out the descriptions of every single thing, but with the movies, don’t have to explain so much since you can see it. i don’t know, i have my reservations, as i did with Twilight, so i’ll wait until i see the movie to form any type of opinion on it. i just hope it’s atleast 3/4ths as good as the book was, then i’ll be happy

  • Jesse

The most important part to me is the reunion of Bella and Edward in Italy. There is just a certain emotion and feeling you get when reading that part of the book, and if that part is changed or isnt just right, it will ruin the whole movie, because thats the part everyone is waiting for and its the most special. In the first movie I feel important dialog was cut to much. We dont want the same lines written differently we want what we see in the book, dont rewrite important lines. Thats just my opinion.

  • jenb

I agree w/pretty much everything that was said. Especially don’t show Edward during the time he’s gone (I WANT to feel/see Bella’s pain. And we need to feel like he’s gone for good like Bella does.) Also the breakup scene is so hard & unimaginable for Bella I want to feel her disbelief that he’s breaking up w/her & leaving & I WANT TO CRY. (I don’t usually don’t like crying but I want to feel her pain so much that it brings that emotion!) And then they better do Italy REALLY well and when Edward comes back THE TRUTH & THE VOTE had all better be done really well & not much cut out (especially Bella thinking that she’s asleep/dead, Edward’s explanation, & then after the vote THE PROPOSAL!)

  • little coward

The two things I want him to get right are the breakup scene and the scene when Bella and Edward return from Italy and are in her room (when he’s trying to convince her that she is not asleep/dead). Those are the most powerful and emotional scenes in the book and they deserve to be no less than perfect. I’m one of those people who enjoy a good cry, and I am expecting to be brought to tears by those tender moments in the film.

  • Nicole

excellent advice! I like how many sites mention the fact that Edward needs to be gone when he is gone. Jake needs him time alone to seduce Bella:) I hope he pays attention to the fans and to Stephenie. New Moon is my favorite and I am really looking forward to it!

  • Erika

I hoonestly think you should keep Edward out of the movie. Like it was in the book. We also need a trailer ASAP. Overall, we don’t want big boobs chicks, or super mhero movies. As a director, if you are the true director you say you are, you will read the book. You absoulutely have to put the vote scene in there. This is where they vote for Bella to become a human. You definetly have to have Emmett say “Hell Yes”. That is a must in the movie. The line “If you dont mind, i’d rather you not hide your face anymore, i lived without it for as long as i can stand” should definetly be in the movie too.

  • darlenecullen

OK!!! We pretty much all agree on the same thing. But how can we really get Chris to hear us on what has been said. I don’t think he reads T.A., but if he does, all I have to say is, ARE YOU LISTENING CHRIS WEITZ? PLEASE DON’T DISAPPOINT US,OR YOU’LL HAVE ALOT OF CRAZIES AFTER YOU!

  • Robsessed

I REALLY HOPE CHRIS WEITZ DOESN’T MESS NEW MOON UP!!!
I can’t bear to see it ruined. All i can say is that if he wants to do a good job, he just has to really think about what he’s doing, and NOT MESS UP THE BREAKUP SCENE OR THE REUNION SCENE otherwise he is going to have to deal with a lot and I mean A LOT of crazed teen fans.
