REELZ CHANNEL 10 DIRECTOR SUGGESTIONS FOR NEW MOON

Posted December 12th, 2008 By: 29 Comments »

Reelz Channel – We can complain all day about Hardwicke’s departure, but like it or not, what’s done is done. She’s moving on and the Twilight fans must do the same. Instead of griping, we’ve decided to take a look at the directors we think could be a worthy replacement. Here’s Ten Director Suggestions for New Moon.

Chris Weitz
Resume: American Pie, About a Boy, The Golden Compass

What he would bring to New Moon: Weitz is here because rumors are circulating that he’s already been offered the job. In terms of heartfelt human comedies, I like the guy. But Golden Compass was a turkey and that’s his sole experience with a project of similar scope.

Alfonso Cuaron
Resume: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Children of Men, Y tu mama tambien

What he would bring to New Moon: Cuaron raised the bar on the Harry Potter series after Chris Columbus’ forgettable first two entries. Like Hardwicke, he departed after one film. There is little doubt that he would make a good flick, but his tendency towards darker themes might feel out of balance with the first film.

Sofia Coppola
Resume: The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation, Marie Antionette

What she would bring to New Moon: A radically different perspective and a grittier, indie feel. She’s worked with young actors in all of her releases and might make the sequel a little more rock ‘n’ roll. Doesn’t exactly seem like Coppola’s cup of tea, though.

The Wachowski Siblings
Resume: Matrix Trilogy, Bound, Speed Racer

What they would bring to New Moon: Hard to tell. They’ve made an alternative sort of twisted love story with Bound, blown audiences out the water with the Matrix (the first one, anyway), and flopped miserably with the neon nightmare of Speed Racer. But they are unpredictable and always capable of surprises, so it would surely be something different.

Quentin Tarantino
Resume: Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill

What he would bring to New Moon: One bad-a**, less-feminine Edward. The girls would talk cooler and Quentin might require that there is a discussion of comic books or famous ’70s kung-fu flicks at some point. Probably not the most likely director, but don’t count him out too quickly. After all, Tarantino did express interest in directing the Friday the 13th Remake.

Guillermo del Toro
Resume: Hellboy, Blade II, Pan’s Labyrinth

What he would bring to New Moon: Del Toro has already done vampires of a different sort with the second Blade film. He’s a wizard with special effects and making moderate budgets look gigantic. The problem is, Summit probably couldn’t afford him and del Toro is likely too busy prepping for The Hobbit prequels.

Joss Whedon
Resume: Serenity, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV)

What he would bring to New Moon: Whedon is no stranger to vampires or episodic storytelling. He’s from TV, so he works fast and has demonstrated an ability to do more with less on Buffy and Firefly. However, getting involved with another vampire series may simply not be in the director’s best interest for fear of typecasting.

Richard Kelly
Resume: Donnie Darko, Southland Tales

What he would bring to New Moon: Kelly has directed one exceptional movie and one mind-boggling disaster. Darko is still good enough that he deserves another chance. And you’d better believe he’d give New Moon the visual flair this more-complex second book demands.

Zack Snyder
Resume: Dawn of the Dead, 300, Watchmen

What he would bring to New Moon: Edward and the gang might end up ditching the femme look in favor of some added brawn and, possibly, a chest wax. Snyder did an undead movie once before, so that experience couldn’t hurt. Dawn and 300 are cool, but the jury is still out on whether this director has the chops to pull off the upcoming Watchmen.

David Goyer
Resume: Blade: Trinity, The Invisible, The Unborn

What he would bring to New Moon: Goyer created the vampire world of the Blade movies, adapting it from the cult comic series. And yes, he wrote the friggin’ Dark Knight, so Melissa Rosenberg would probably have to expect a rewrite or two. As a director, however, Goyer’s skills are far-less polished in comparison to his scribbler talents.

A few of the suggestions listed above are ones I hadn’t considered, like Joss Whedon. He’s not a bad suggestion.

OH HALE NO to Quentin Tarrantino and Sofia Coppola. What do you think of the Reelz Channel Suggestions? Which would be at the top of your New Moon director wish list? Which of the suggestions are just way off base?

apologies to harry potter 3 lovers… but alfonso cuaron, in my opinion made the movie suck. and the director of the first 2 made the best ones, the fourth one was pretty good and the fifth one was a failure

  • Angelina

I say we get Chris Columbus!!!!!! haha =P

dawnnoelle I was wondering why no to sofia and quentin? I have my reasons cause I don’t really know them haha but why do u say no?

  • http://twilightersanonymous.com dawnnoelle

    hi angelina =)

sofia – i liked lost in translation, but i didn’t like marie antionette. it was just too poofy, over done and shallow. i don’t see her having the ability to do new moon justice.

quentin – he has a very odd sense of humor. i haven’t liked any of his work. he seems to only appeal to certain people. twilight appeals to a lot of women and teenage girls – i doubt that could match up based on his past work.

i don’t think either one of them would agree to do new moon anyway but that’s my opinion.

  • Megan

Oh! Joss Whedon would be fantastic!!! He would MAKE these movies. He did an amazing job on Buffy and Serenity/Firefly! Totally has my vote.

  • sparkling

I think it could be fun to watch David Goyer give it a shot. Yeah, he might not be as skilled but writing “The Dark Knight” (with the best psycho EVER) should, at least, count for something!

  • LovelySarah

I agree with Sarah that Harry Potter 3 was a disaster but maybe twilight is more his taste…I say David Goyer he did not let anyone down with writing dark Knight I’m sure he’ll have no problem directing New Moon.

  • Bullet_Proof

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! Not Alofonso Cuaron!!!!!!!!!!! The Third Harr Potter movie sucked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And that had a better book to work with!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://www.aol.com jacobrocks

I say that James Cameron, who directed Titanic, should direct New Moon! He’s had experience with stuff from Titanic like: romance, friendship, sadnesss, and action! He would be PERFECT!!

  • she runs with vampires

I think Chris Columbus is not mentioned Because Summit couldn’t afford him. I hadn’t thought of Goyer before this and he has definite appeal. Who was the guy who did Underworld? He has a lot of passion for Vampires even if his were much darker and Whedon has experience w/supernatural Buffy. Can’t we post a grievance about Weitz and NEPOTISM somewhere at Summit? He’s known for comedies! I need cheese for my WHINE!!!!! I just love our precious Cullens and I want JUSTICE SERVED…..

  • esv2577

I think that the 3rd HP movie was pretty good so Im ok with Cuaron. I like Coppola, Cuaron, del Toro and Snyder but Im really hoping for del Toro or Coppola.

  • anitamichichi

Forgive me, I think some people need to stop saying VERY unlikely directors, we can dream but it’s not going to happen! So enough with Peter Jackson (the man has enough projects going on then he can count, just check out his IMDB if you don’t believe me). James Cameron, beautiful director, but AIN’t going to happen. Tim Burton-not only will Summit not be able to afford him, but I DONOt want him directing New Moon. Don’t get me wrong, I love a lot of his work, but I think we can all agree that Tim Burton tend to only stick to a certain category when it comes to making films-New Moon won’t be his forte.

I think David Goyer and Guillermo Del Toro- only for Pan’s Labryinth, would be interesting.

  • Amy S

I agree with Dawnnoelle on Quentin and Sophia. I personally think that Gulliermo del Toro or Joss Whendon would be good. My ideal would be a director who approached Summit with enthusiasm wanting to do the movies.

  • Brittany

I say Joss Whedon! Although his werewolves (from Buffy) didn’t look like werewolves… they look like gorillas. Or Alfonso Cuaron.

  • Brittany

Oh and Quentin Tarantino is cool too but he is known for his R-rated movies and we kind of have to keep New Moon PG-13.

  • twilightfan14

Don’t really know why everybody is still debating this-they’ve already hired Weitz, I’m sure of it.
My dream director would be Joss Whedon but with him still shooting Dollhouse, there’s no way he would be available in 3 days to start preproduction. Not gonna happen.
The Warchowski B. or Goyer would definitely be interesting.
Tarantino-NO No-everything he does is crazy violent.
I think S. Coppola could rise to the occasion but I don’t know for sure.

  • .Rebekah Cullen

I think the guy who did the Series of Unfortunate Events movie would be perfect. Even Larry Carroll said so.

  • Tania

The director from the underworld (Len Wiseman)would be good because the movie had action and romance he also did a great job with the vampires and the werewolves effects. The vampires didn’t look scary and they almost had all the characteristics as the Cullens, ohh and you could see their fangs in the movie(unlike twilight were we didn’t get to see any fangs) and we need someone who has experience with werewolves and how to actually make them look real, so they wont be looking bad like in Buffy

  • Nat

LOL! I totally enjoyed your own comment, the whole “HALE, NO” thing. That was awesome! I agree with you on those two. I fell asleep watching just watching trailers of “Lost in Translation” and whatever else Sofia did. David Goyer would be so awesome! Just looking at his imdb stats, he’s done everything. The Invisible was awesome, Dark Knight is beyond words, I’ve never seen the Blade trilogy, but I know they did well. He’d be my top pick.

  • bri

I agreed, that guy made the 3rd harry potter kinda suck i was disappointed..just like i was the first time i saw Twilight =/

i REALLY hope this new guy does really well though. like more imaginative, more true to the book, and give a little more of what edward ‘s point of view was.

    and KEEP TAYLOR AS JACOB.

and tell Kristen to act..a little better.

and Rob…well rob can be a lil more edward-ish
other wise he did pretty good

    =]

  • mariampattinson

    Tim burton … ?

  • http://www.myspace.com/decodedfantasy Jen

i would personally like Richard Kelly. He’s one of my favorite directors.

  • athena

you guys know it was already announced Chris Weitz IS directing right??

i don’t see it on the site yet?

    it’s on Stephanie’s website…

  • kerri

Sarah, thats so funny, I feel like the first two were the worst. To each her own, eh. Tim Burtons awsome but I dont think he’s suited AT ALL for Twilight. Rob would love him because together they would lean toward Edwards depression and self loathing rather then the intense need Edward and Bella have for one another. I dont know, why would Summit hire a guy who barley any experience? We said that about Cathrine at first too….Im not a psychic like Alice, mabey he’ll do fine? Keep our fingers, toes, arms, legs and eyes crossed!

  • criss

DEL TORRO!! i love his movies and the diffrent ways of making films

  • angie

I would pick del torro ..love the movie the Pan’s Labyrinth. it was awsome!! buttt i loveee BLADEE:TRINITY!! i think David Goyer is perfect at list for New Moon. he woluld problablyy will show more bellas suffering and maybe edwards..alsoo who knows? maybe this will be goodd for more actions and side effectss! i know HE WILL BRING IT!!

  • Fallen

Joss Whedon would be perfect of course and make a movie that had enough subtext to mean something instead of a mindless action/sex romp to make 13 year old girls giddy. He’s just way too busy to do it.

Cuaron would be fantastic as well. The 3rd HP was the best one to date, finally taking on a darker look and an entirely more magical feel. Of course it’s always sad to watch because no one could be a better Dumbledore than Richard Harris (RIP). But HP doesn’t hold a candle to his best film to date, Children of Men, which blows me away.

Sophia would be great as well, Lost in Translation was a masterpiece and The Virgin Suicides was great as well. Could bring a lot to the project.

As for people like Tarantino, Snyder, Goyer, and The Wachowskis…it’s just so out of budget that it’s not even worth talking about. It’s like saying you want to get Brad and Angelina for the leads.

  • anysa

how about tim burton?? i really love his movies he is my fave director next to catherine hardwicke for twilight cause that is the only work of hers ive seen and this chris weitz guy cause he is doing new moon…which i hope he doesnt screw up or else i will bite his head off..jk jk ..i will be really depresssed and have to be entered into a clinic with a shrink

Why does everybody think that Goyer wrote The Dark Knight? He didn’t! Well at least not the screenplay. Chris Nolan and his brother Jonathan did. Goyer wrote a treatment and a first draft which were completely rewritten by the Nolans. So along with Chris he worked out the story but he didn’t write the script. Goyer works best as a writer when he is paired with someone else (eg Batman Begins, Dark City), in that situation he has produced some excellent work. But by himself he tends to create many plot holes and some ridiculous dialogue. I can’t make a judgement on his directing because I have only seen Blade: Trinity but that was awful.
Anyway, most of the directors you listed would never do one of these movies.
Also, I don’t think it was Chris Weitz’s fault that The Golden Compass turned out as it did. If New Line hadn’t forced him to tone down the religious elements, cut off the ending and shorten it to a ridiculously inadequate length then the movie may have turned out MUCH better. I would be really interested to see a directors cut of the movie with the intended running time and the un-castrated ending, I think it would make a huge difference, especially with the pacing problems. If only Weitz had the cojones to stand up to the suits at New Line like Peter Jackson did. Anyway, enough with my rant.

  • Hautelioness

jacobrocks… i think you are right. James Cameron would rock at directing New Moon and the REST of the saga. I watched Titanic again for the millionth time yesterday and it is so intricately detailed that I think that having JC take on the helm of this crazy ship would be beneficial.

Not a teeny bopper… Totally have grown up from that stage of my life… (those were the Titanic years for me) :-)
