Reuters - the box office numbers are coming in already and Twilight is doing really well:
Teen vampire movie “Twilight” topped the British box office over the weekend, taking 2.5 million pounds and beating animation picture “Madagascar 2″ into second place, its distributor E1 Films said on Monday. The movie, based on the bestselling novel by U.S. author Stephenie Meyer, also topped the North American box office at its opening weekend last month with ticket sales of $69.6 million, and its backers hoped the success would extend beyond the book’s core U.S. following.
According to E1, the British subsidiary of Entertainment One Group, “Twilight” was comfortably ahead of Madagascar 2 (1.8 million pounds) and “Four Christmases” (1.0 million pounds).
According to BoxOfficeMojo.com

YAY - I expected Twilight to do well in the UK. That doesn’t surprise me at all. The movies doesn’t seem to be slowing down much. It’s already over $200 million. I bet Summit is still blown away by that.
Did you think the movie would do well in the UK? Or did you expect it to do better than this?

Wow, lol thats a hell of alot of money.
I hope these extraordinary box office numbers translate into a larger budget for New Moon, more than the reported $50 million.
Over 200 million, not counting all the “little” countries that haven’t reported yet, the DVD sales, or the massive amount they’ve made on merchandise (the characters in the books weren’t all wearing Cullen crest jewelry–I wonder who’s idea that was?)! Think maybe Summit will kick in a few extra bucks to give New Moon the polish it deserves?
Seriously a lot of money. Summit, please PLEASE increase the budget of New Moon? C’mon, don’t be cheap! We haven’t been cheap with you! (Man, why do I feel like I’m talking to a bad boyfriend…)
i figured it to make that much. . .i am amazed though at all the money that Twilight as made overall, maybe now Summit will give a little more money to New Moon than just 50 million!!
Almost 7 times it’s original budget - I hope Summit reconsiders and gives New Moon a budget suitable for all the CGI work needed, actor’s raises, which is what it deserves after raking in such a HUGE amount of money!!
I have no idea what the comparison is for UK movie releases. How much money is considered for a modest opening? a mega openeing? And being american, I have no idea just how much money 2 million pounds is. Can anyone lend this yank a clue?
You would think it would do better in the UK being that Rob Pattinson is from London. I bet Summit is really surprised by this “teen movie”. Not all fans are teens, some are moms!
we sure rock!!!
Summit must be afraid of us by now. if they’re not, then they’re up for a big surprise.
$210,318,408 is sure a huge amount of money.. go Twilighters…
WOOT, TWILIGHT! I love this. I saw that Emma Watson says Twilight is doing really well but she isnt sure that it has the following Harry Potter has. That made me laugh!
WOW! $210,318,408!!! and there’s still sevral countries that hasn’t the movie yet!!!in switzerland, france,…!!!i hope that for New Moon, it’ll be more than $50million!!!
well done UK!!
I’m with everyone else - c’mon Summit, stop being cheap. You say you’re going to make NM and E at the same time, surely that deserves throwing $80 mil at each movie….AT LEAST!!
by the time you start filming in March the DVD will start earning huge bucks as well!
Wendilynn,
To answer your question, the 2.0 mil in the uk comes out to be just a hair under 3.0 mill here. That is actually quite a good opening. Their average ticket price would be equal to 3 to 4 US dollars.
I hope this helps.
That $210m is only counting foreign numbers up to Dec 14th. Once the BoxOfficeMojo website updates, I’m hoping it hits $250m.
£2,000,000 is roughlu around $2,900,000.
I think, thats what it said on a currency convert on the internet.
I think thats alright, not great but alright for the UK.
When I went to see it thee cinema was practically empty and I went on opening day in the UK.
I don’t think there has been as much publicity for it over here because in the US there was loads of publicity for it.
Not surprised. Angry that they’re not taking good care of the story and the characters and actors. I want them to put this money to good use by investing it in New Moon and investing the time that it takes to make a High Quality movie and preserve the story of our Precious Cullens.
I never had any doubt about us Twilighters, remember the saying “there’s strength in numbers”? We are a mighty force to be reckoned with.
I thought it would do well period. Everyone was excited to see their favorite book on screen. I’ve recruited many people to the book(s) and to watch the movie. I’ve seen it 8 times now. The movie is still going strong in theatres on the weekends anyway. Packed or sold out. That’s awesome! Considering how long its been in theatres now. I can not wait until New Moon! Hopefully this new director will follow more on the book.
not suprised at all. i knew it would do amazing all-over. I saw it 5 times
yes, go twilight. I hope summit will consider again regarding the rumors budget for new moon. Come on now, twilight is beginning and there is 2 more sequels…they should take it really-really-really-serious…
anyway, please make the stories add for edward scenes in new moon, without that person, I doubt it feel the same.
Catherine has translated success into the movie from the book, I hope chris can understand the book carefully in setting.
More edward cullen pleaseeeeeee…………
wow, i’m quickly becoming obssessed with Twilight, like everyone else, it is amazing!!
$200 million is a lot of money but i hope that the next few films keep on takin loads of money because i would love to see the complete set of films made just to top it all off.
It may not have done great in the UK, but it still made more money on the opening weekend than any other film here and i know loads of people who are absolutely hooked. The publicity was bad though, i haven’t even seen the trailer.
I read the first two books in two weeks and decided to wait before i start New Moon because i don’t want to waste the precious writing, i’m going to be so lost when they finish, lol
anyway, Twilight has my vote, people have moved on from Harry Potter and Robert Pattinson definitely beats Daniel Radcliffe
can’t wait for the New Moon and the DVD of Twilight
