Mangold Headed for Twilight’s Eclipse?

Summit Entertainment is in talks with director James Mangold to helm Eclipse, the third adaptation in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series. That’s according to Production Weekly who announced the news this morning.

Mangold is the man behind Girl, Interrupted (lots angsty gals in that one), Walk the Line and 3:10 to Yuma. Again, it’s not confirmed he’s locked to direct, but if and when it is we’ll let you know.

Summit is currently gearing up New Moon, based on book two, with Chris Weitz at the helm. Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner are confirmed to star.

Right now this is only a rumor. Until we hear it from Summit, it’s not a done deal. How do you feel about James Mangold for director of Eclipse? Do you like the idea of having a different director for each Twilight series movie? Or do you think that could detract from the movies?

Seeing as how I loved the direction in Girl, Interrupted and Walk The Line I think Mangold would do an absolutely fantastic job. He could be just what Eclipse needs for a director. His movies tend to be Oscar winners so the fact that his name is even mentioned for a Twilight movie is incredible.

Let us not forget how many different directors Harry Potter has had and they still continue to be gigantic blockbusters while still staying true to the story.

I’ve been trying to keep up with all the news.

Is it true that Eclipse is set to film right after New Moon?

If this is true, and correct me if I’m wrong as I know NOTHING about how things are done, then this would mean that Weitz will be busy with all the editing, etc in order for New Moon to be ready by November 2009 and not be able to direct Eclipse. Interesting!

I can only imagine that may be this is one of the sticking points for Catherine and the timing/schedule issues that were given as reasons for her not doing New Moon.

I am totally stoked at the idea that Eclipse may be getting a FANTASTIC director! The Twilight series deserves to have a director like him on board. This is a rumor that I hope and pray is true! It makes complete sense that they would need a different director on Eclipse because Weitz will be busy with all the post production editing after New Moon.

I don’t really think it would be a bad thing to have different directors. Each of the books have differents feelings, and different battles, so it would be ok see different views. Of course we will have to see New Moon before we know what will be official.

This is just another Vanessa-esque rumor. They ahven’t even started filming new Moon, there’s no way they’d be looking for a director for Eclipse. Besides if they are filming them back to back (and i’m 80% sure they are) it would make the most sense and save the most money to keep Chris Weitz (and it seems that SUmmit si all about saving money, otherwise they’d give NM a bigger budget)

Given that this is just a rumor, and there’s a new one everyday…I think it would be FANTASTIC to have James Mangold direct Eclipse. I have lots of faith in Weitz and think New Moon will be an improvement over Twilight. Still, the thought of Mangold getting a shot at the 3rd one is just too good to resist!! I bet the cast would be stoked to work with him. Wonder if Summit would really be willing to cut that paycheck. But alas, just a rumor…

I love walk the line it got me depressed for about 2 hours after i saw he’ll be great for eclipse although i think he shoulda been good for new moon also..
Not a fan of chris weitz’s golden compass but i sure as hell hope he proves me wrong!

I really just want Catherine Hardwicke to come back,
I really think shes intitled direct Eclipse.
I don’t think any one could do a better job than her.
& I hope she directs Breaking Dawn, (if they make it, they better or I will hunt them down.. seriously).

IF THIS SHOULD BE TRUE, it signals that Summit is totally manic. I cant imagine that a studio would want a new director for a sequel BEFORE the 2nd movie has even started shooting. As a lawyer, the only thing I can think of is that they are not happy with Weitz, but theyre are locked into a contract with him for New Moon. Im not an entertainment lawyer, but I do know most contracts are at will (meaning, we can fire you at any time, and you can quit at any time), so I doubt this is the case. My guess, is this is a wild rumor.

I think he would be great. I’ve seen all three of those movies, and He’s PERFECT! (he should have done all of them)

  • melissa

    Hey, he sounds great.
    Let’s do it!

  • AllieCullen

I don’t really know about having different directors for every movie, like they did with Harry Potter. Each director has different view points of how the books should be transfered to the screen. Cathrine Hardewick had a different view point from Chris Weitz, and James Mangold will be different from Chris Weitz’s. We don’t even know if Chris Weitz is going to butcher it or earn it an Oscar.

I understand everbody is really anxious to see all the movies, im just as anxious, but if they’re planning to film new moon and eclipse back to back, that means that the actors wont get a break. Seeing as they have granted us the pleasure of seeing the twilight saga rather than reading it, dont you think that the actors deserve a break? As much as i HATE to admit it, I think they do.

  • becca

I think Mangold would be perfect for Eclipse! all of his movies he’s directed were very good! very very good! he is a good director, has great experience, and he really undestands relationships, drama, and portraying it on screen. he understands the purspose of acting and creating it! he should definitely direct eclipse and have a GREAT CGI team for special effects! hope he gets it
