/FILM: JUAN ANTONIO BAYONE- ANOTHER DIRECTOR FOR “ECLIPSE”?

Posted March 10th, 2009 By: Evie 8 Comments »

/Film has an interesting article about possible director choices for “Eclipse”:

Drew Barrymore might not be a lock to direct the third Twilight film. THR is reporting that Guillermo Del Toro protege Juan Antonio Bayona is now rumored to be one of the top finalists to direct The Twilight Saga’s Eclipse. But then again, reps are saying that they are still looking at a number of candidates. James Mangol had been previously rumored to be in talks, and earlier today Twilight fansites were claiming that New Moon director Chris Weitz’s brother Paul Weitz might direct the third film.

While I was a huge fan of Bayona’s The Orphanage, I would much rather see him make his American debut with something more original and a property that could better test his skills. The filmmaker is also signed on to direct an adaptation of the David Moody novel Hater for Universal. I still like the idea of Summit hiring a woman filmmaker for the project as the source material is so female-targeted in nature.

I think the directing pool that they are looking at for “Eclipse” is much larger than we first thought. There are some interesting names being tossed around for director. I’m not famiiar with “The Orphanage” yet, I’m going to go look it up.

Who do you think should be directing “Eclipse”? Do you have a preference if the director is a man or woman?

I have no preference as to who should direct the movie as long as he or she does it well. I worry about New Moon being rushed. True I can not wait to see it but I hope the quality of the movie is worth watching and not some movie just slapped together to make an extra buck. I hope they consider the fans and what we do expect out of it

i thought the director of New Moon um Chris said his brother was gonna direct Eclipse

I saw “The Orphanage” It was a spanish movie with english subtitles, It was pretty good I thought. It was a horror movie, but it wasn’t very scary.
I don’t really think, from what I saw, that Eclipse would be his stle though.

I think that Paul Weitz would be the best candidate to direct Eclipse. If Chris Weitz’s interpretation of New Moon is well-recieved, then Paul would be be the next best choice. Chris and Paul have been working together for many years, they most likely have similar styles.

Paul has directed and adapted the first book in the series by Darren Shan, Cirque Du Freak. These are amazing stories and have similar needs to Eclipse, such as vampires, creatures, and fantasy. Plus the film has a great cast, Salma Hayek, John C. Reilly, and Willem Defoe.

The Orphanage is the best “horror” film I’ve seen maybe ever. Perhaps it shouldn’t even be classified in that genre. It’s complex, but swimming with tension, and the ending of the film.. it is so beautiful that it makes your heart hurt.
He is a great candidate for the job. If he is truly a protege of Guillermo de Toro we should all be so lucky to have him as a director. It would be magnificent. Although Del Toro himself would be the best choice.

The diretor’s pool is very large. The success has people who wouldn’t normally touch this and were huge fans of the story wanting to come in and do it justice. I hope Katja von Granier is in the pool as well.. I think she did an excellent job with Blood and Chocate and Anthony Casaletto

If Paul and Chris are close and have the same background knowledge and similar outlooks, then I hope Paul is chosen to direct Eclipse (IF Chris does a great job with New Moon!)I think the hand-off would be much easier between brothers, and the consistency between movies would be more seamless. Stephenie absolutely has to consult on every movie.

They really need to call me and ask my advice. ;)

I loved The Orphanage so if Bayona is confirmed as the director for Eclipise- I’d be very pleased.

I can’t believe the author of the article said he’d like to see something more ‘original’ and ‘chanllenging’ for Bayona! Really?! Because last time I checked, directing the adaptation of a book into a movie is one of the most challenging things to pull off AND Stephenie’s take on the vampire world is ground breaking in it’s break from the typical take. There’s challenging and original for you! Errrr…. :)
