SOLOMON TRIMBLE NOT RECAST AS SAM IN SEQUEL ‘NEW MOON’

Posted March 4th, 2009 By: Evie 65 Comments »

According to Solomon Trimble’s official Myspace and Facebook pages, the actor has not been recast in his role of Sam Uley in ‘New Moon’.

This is what Solomon had to say:

My agent heard from Summit Entertainment today that I will not be reprising the role of Sam in “New Moon.” While I will cherish the experience of being involved in the first film, I am looking forward to many new opportunities in the future and would like to thank everyone for their support.

Thanks Kaly and twilightjunkie1

Well I’m finding this to be sad news first thing in the morning. I was looking forward to seeing Solomon grow in his character, as Sam became more important to the story. This seems to be the official word from Solomon, but so far no official word from Summit.

How do you feel about Sam being recast? Were you part of Team Solomon for Sam?

i think its sad because he was really excited about the movie! he seemed really inspired by the role with the poetry he wrote and everything. when are they releasing the cast for new moon already???? they start filming this month!

  • Harriet aka “The Lamb”

I like Solomon and I thought he would be good for the part. But at the same time, I don’t think his part in ‘Twilight’ was big enough for there to be a real void in ‘New Moon’. I’m sure whoever Summit chose will do a great job! :)

  • want2binforks

This stinks. I am so afraid for this next movie. Will it even resemble the book (or for that matter the first movie) by the time they are done ? How are they going to make sense of the change of scenery/high school/main characters, etc.? PLEASE, is someone at Summit a real fan of the books? Please don’t disappoint us! Also lets aim a little higher this time and make a movie for those fans who are over the age of 16!!!!!

  • Martha

OKay yeah I have to agree Evie not good waking up and seeing this news…I liked Solomon as Sam. Very sad not seeing him coming back for New Moon. Well I think i’m more mad but very sad grrr…sad news very sad. :(

  • La Mia Penombra

That’s so very sad!! It makes me wonder who ELSE may be recast :S

  • twilightjunkie

I and soooo bummed out by the news….I really wish they would have left ALL the original cast in New Moon…hope we are not disappointed with the new Sam…:(

  • http://twilightersanonymous.com/component/option,com_mojo/Itemid,/p,1903/#respond BY_CHANCE?

THEY WOULD BE SOOOOO STUPID TO DO THAT!!!!

    Why oh WHY….

  • Stephanie

I’m bummed. I’ve been hoping he would be re-cast especially with all of his knowledge of the character and determination. I just. . . after all of this time of reading interview after interview of him becoming Sam. He was so focused that I saw him as Sam and not Solomon after a while. And that in itself is incredible no matter how you look at it.

I’m bummed and hope they have a change of heart last minute.

Solomon, if you do read this. From one native to another in the world of media and film, you made me proud and I hope to see you on the screen again soon.

  • cullencrazy08

What is the problem I cant understand replacing him .I cant see nooobody playing him but Soloman .

  • Laural

I am sad… Solomon was the perfect Sam. I regret that we won’t see him go on with the role. Before Solomon appeared on the big screen, I was sold: I had seen the interviews done with the Twilight Lexicon during filming and I knew that Solomon wasn’t just trying to pretend to be Sam, he understood the character and fully embraced his story arc.

I’ll miss you and your work, Solomon. Thank you for all that you gave.

  • Tink

It’s a sad day for Solly fans :’(

    I hope Summit reconsiders.

  • Ashlee

I will take this news and put it in the back of my head categorized as something I know, but don’t care too much about. I didn’t want to judge Solomon’s acting, good or bad, from the one line that he had in the first film. I have nothing against or for Solomon, so I don’t know if this will make the movie better or worse, in other words.

  • DazzledByTwilight

I am just heartbroken and utterly appalled at Summit! Bravo for screwing up another movie! Way to go Summit! Well I know that all of the Solomon fans will be upset over this news and that I for one will pay to go see New Moon ONCE! the rest of my views will be on one of these free movie channels here on the net and I have a feeling that NM will make alot less money than Twilight did! Pat your selves on the back Summit, you just keep messing up! I hope you are proud of what you are doing with our beloved Twilight saga! I am so disgusted right now!

As for Solomon goes, I with all of his other fans will look forward to what he will do in the future!!! Now that is exciting news!!

  • shannon17

    Hmmm….interesting.

I wonder where casting is heading? Why haven’t we heard more news from Summit?

Casting concerns me. Is New Moon going to be chock full of Disney and Nickolodeon-type people?

  • Amber

I cannot believe that! That is crazy!

  • http://www.twitter.com/AudEsUnFanpire Audrey

Awh! This makes me sad. He was sooo authentic, and he really got into that job.
    I hope he continues acting!

  • Anonymous

I am so sad to hear this, Solomon was wonderful and really got into the role and did his research on the part. He was really emotionally invested and I don’t understand why he hasn’t been recast. I am a fan, and it’s so stupid to pick another person to play the role at this point. I’m sorry to Solomon because he deserves the part.

  • TexasVampire

Oh my that’s terrible news! They better have a really good reason why they didn’t recast him. If they recast Sam with one of Disney drones, I’d be FURIOUS! Best of luck with his future endeavors. I have a feeling they wanted to go with a different version of Sam–more musclar & thick, maybe?

  • Gina

I know others feel he was Sam, but I just didn’t see it. And unless you read the books or paid attention to the credits, you wouldn’t even know that was supposed to be Sam. I saw the movie first, then read all the books, and I just thought he was a random friend of Jacob. He had 1 line in the movie and book, and I don’t think it is going to hurt the next movies. He will become more established from the get go with saving Bella and will develop from there. His character never had a chance to develop in Twilight. It would be much more noticeable if they were to recast any of the others. It is sad for Solomon and I feel bad for him, but am looking forward to seeing how New Moon progresses!

  • Tara

I don’t know that I’m that sad, I mean I’m sad for Soloman, but I didn’t even know he was Sam in the movie, I’m one of those weirdo’s that watched the movie before I read the book, so he was just one of Jacob’s friends to me, if I hadn’t read the book (like 5 times lol) then you could have casted a different Sam in the next movie and I really wouldn’t have noticed the difference, for all I know Soloman could have been playing Quinn or Emery. But yeah it is sad that they were just like oh your not going to be playing Sam next movie sorry!

  • Melanie

Okay this casting thing has officially gotten on my last nerve. Is Summit completely clueless?!!! I’m now completely terrified of what the outcome of all this back and forth is going to have on the sequel and the subsequent movies. Don’t they realize that they are dealing with a crazed fan base?
This was not the best news to see when I opened my email.

  • Emily

I agree with Gina and Tara. This is not major casting news. Sam in the Twilight movie was just barely a blip and many people didn’t even realize who he was. It would have made more sense that he was Quil or Embry as they were the three best friends.

It is too bad for Solomon and I agree it really isn’t a good way to treat people who have invested a lot of energy and time into a character, but I’m not so sure it is something to be truly outrageously upset about.

  • AnnaS

What I’m about to say will sound heartless to some people… But it’s my honest opinion.
He was like a non-existant character in the 1st movie, but it’s true that he does get a bigger role afterwards… I don’t remember how he looked like, but I’m sure he was not tall/big enough to not require CGI/visual work to change him from a normal teenager to a werewolf-teenager.
Considering their budget, I don’t even really understand that they kept Taylor Lautner in a way, I mean for before the change, he is just fine, but afterwards… Even his face is supposed to change, it’s supposed to have ecchos from before the changes when he smiles, but be a lot harder and mannlier, right? He goes from a 16 years old normal teenager to a 25 years old looking huge man-wolf. And a lot of exercise will not change hight hight, nor his age…
To be consistent, they should have changed the entire native-american cast to match the physical changes.

I hope that the 2cond movie will still be good, and I will go see it even if they did not make the right decision concerning the cast according to me. I could very well be surprised.

  • Ripe

Good news. I didn’t like him playing Sam. I actually laughed when I saw him in the movie :D But I hope that he’ll get more opportunities in other films.

  • creamy

I have to agree with AnnaS and Ripe: I certainly wish Solomon well, and hope this exposure helps with other opportunities, but he was just not memorable. Of course, part of that would be his part on screen was about two seconds long, I think. But also, he just didn’t exude what I expected from Sam, the oldest in the group.

As for Taylor, I still think he is the best for Jacob. No, he isn’t seven feet tall. Do you know of any one actor who could portray Jacob and match the physical changes as described in the book?

Taylor radiates the Jacob personality. I wish him well too.

  • Jaina

It kinda sucks that they recasted him — that is really annoying in all movies or tv shows. But he had two lines, one of them was ok but the other was really bad (“The Cullens don’t come here”). They should get someone more expireienced for the bigger part. I’m glad to see him go.

  • Caiti

    I fully agree with Gina.
She said everything that i was going to say.

-I know others feel he was Sam, but I just didn’t see it.

  • AllisCullen

Well, I’m not sure how I feel about this.

I’m not really a Solomon fan, in fact I’d never heard of him, before Twilight, but I AM sad that he’s not coming back.

It always sucks when part of an ensemble is removed, but since he wasn’t a MAJOR part of the story, yet, maybe he won’t be missed a whole lot. I dunno.

  • LaurenShmauren

yay! thats all i have to say

  • TwilghtGuy#1

DONT CARE!he wasnt a very good sam to begin with he was skinny and scrawny…in new moon jacob is supposed to be huge however not bigger than sam…he wouldnt fit it
in..i do not care who they cast or recast as long as they keep the cullens and the swans!

  • Michelle (Mrs. Pattinson)

why is summit trying to change everybody? that’s so frustrating just keep solomon. he was so excited about the movie and his band is named after midnight sun the book. wow. whatever.

  • DazzledByTwilight

I just have to say this! I am utterly appalled at some of the disrespectful comments that have been left here. Solomon is a very humble person and was fully dedicated to the role of Sam Uley. He epitomized the spirit of Sam and worked endlessly to bring the role of Sam to life. Could we at least show him that respect! To be as cruel and thoughtless as some of you are makes me ashamed to be called a Twilight fan.

  • Renee

    I HATE YOU SUMMIT!
He fit the role so well =/

  • twilightbloom

Well this is a troubling development. It’s true that Solomon didn’t have a very large part in Twilight but he seemed like a good fit for New Moon. It’s concerning because we haven’t seen any kind of a cast list and it makes me wonder exactly what this says about all of the rumors we’ve been hearing/seeing in the press. I’m trying not to make any judgements or jump to hasty conclusions but this isn’t giving me any feelings of confidence. I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop…

  • Gina

In response to DazzledbyTwilight…I have not read any of the above posts that were disrespectful to Solomon. Most said they felt sorry for him and felt bad they did that to him. Some were down right mad that he got recast. Others are OK with. Some are glad. Just because we are Ok with the recast doesn’t mean we are disrespecting the actor. Just in my opinion, and it’s only an OPINION, I did not see him as Sam…that’s not the way he looked to me when I pictured him reading the books. (And I read the books after I saw the movie and didn’t even know that was supposed to be Sam til later…so my “picture” of him was not affected by the movie.) That doesn’t mean he wouldn’t have done a good job, or changed my mind if they had kept him on. But he is a very minor character in Twilight, only mentioned in the book in one line, and his character name is not even mentioned in the movie. I, seeing the movie first, had no idea who he was supposed to be and even after I read the first book, and was on to New Moon, someone had to tell me that it was Sam that said “the cullens don’t come here” in the movie. So in conclusion, does it stink that they did that to him – YES! Is it going to hurt the movie – No. No disrespect intended

  • lcol0rsl

I am very disappointed at this news. I hate it when characters are recasted. Solomon was a really dedicated actor and especially towards his role as Sam; i’m sad to hear that not many people know about his commitment to his role as Sam and aren’t being very respectful. Just because he didn’t have a huge part in the Twilight movie, doesn’t mean he was forgettable. I will always remember his efforts to embody Sam and prepare for not only his small segment in the Twilight movie, but also in the subsequent films as well. I think Summit is making a huge mistake, but now i’m very curious as to who they replaced Sam with.

  • http://myspace.com/shywolf490 Tracy (spiritwolf32)

I agree with Evie as well. It is something that made me so sad after waking up. As for Solomon, I am on Team Solomon for Solomon lol Not for Sam. Though I would love for him to reprise his role as Sam. I would support him no matter what he does or where he goes. He is such a cool guy. Anyway… I came to post this for all the Solomon fans. Please help Team Solomon out!!

    Help Save Solomon!!

Okay Team Solomon hasn’t given up on trying to get Summit and the casting department to keep Solomon. It has been confirmed that he will not be reprising his role as Sam Uley. But as I have said. We are not giving up yet. Not until they start filming Sam’s part. We have links to the casting people and would love for Solomon Supporters to write to these people and tell them that they should Keep Solomon. I wrote them I even included Krys as Embry. Here is a letter I have written. You can copy and sign your name of change things or do whatever you would like. I hope this helps. take into consideration that I am not good at letter writing. I just wanted them to know that Solomon deserves this role with all the hard work he has put into it.

    Here are the email addresses:

You can e-mail the casting director, Erik Feig, at this address: efeig@summit-ent.com
Here are some more e-mail addresses of Summits casting department for Twilight:

This is in regards to the casting for “New Moon”.

There is an old saying: If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.
This has been said by many fans.

Solomon Trimble, who was cast as Sam Uley in the film “Twilght” was perfect for that role. The same goes for Krys; the guy who played Embry Call.

We as fans have already seen these guys in Twilight. It would be a shame to have a different face play either of these roles in New Moon.

Solomon Trimble has put so much dedication into the role of Sam. He has begun working with the Quileute, to learn their culture, language. and anything else he believes would help him play the character better for the fans.
He helped to promote Twilight with the other cast members. He has also bee “Buffing” up and changed his eating habits to look the part. His face is who fans now see when the character Sam is mentioned. Solomon DESERVES this role. Please don’t take it away from him.

Krys ended up with no lines in the movie, but in interviews, fans have gotten to know a little about him. We want to see where he can take the next movie; New Moon.

Both Solomon and Krys are Sam and Embry. There is no debate on this. We don’t want new faces.

We have an online petition showing many supporters for Solomon and Krys and the whole ORIGINAL cast of Twilight; to bring them all back to New Moon.
    Petition link: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/TeamSolomon/

Please talk with the casting director and anyone else who is involved in casting so that they will keep these two obviously talented guys in the New Moon movie.

Solomon Trimble and Krys are Sam Uley and Embry Call; PERIOD!!

Thank you for taking the time to read my letter.

Nobody meant to be disrespectfull torwards his work or dedication, we just have different views.

For my part, I was merely stating an opinion: that he was not a major character in twilight (the movie) and that this recast is not going to change that much for the rest of the movies.
While I had never heard of him (nor of his dedication) before, I hope that he’ll have other interesting projects. i’m sure he must be very disapointed.

My major concern was how are they going to make do with the money they have while there is some major digital work to do on the picture.
But I mean, they were considering recasting Taylor Lautner at one point (I perfectly understood why), this would have been a major recast. A lot of people seem very happy with this final decision to keep him, and I understand how you got used to him and started liking him (I like him too, I’m just not sure about the part after he becomes a werewolf…).

What I find disturbing is the timing for the decision to recast or not recast certain actors… it’s “a little” of a short notice.

  • love him

Well I sort of was laughing with the part where Solomon, as Sam, said: ‘The Cullens don’t come here’. Oh he was certainly not the Sam I imagined, the first time I watched the movie I didn’t even recognize who was he supposed to be until he said that part of the Cullens, so I’m not sorry for him not being recast.
But it is a little sad because he said he got really inspired and even wrote poems about his character, but still I think Summit made a good choice.
    Just an OPINION, right?

  • Karen Dorsey

I love Solomon Trimble as Sam. I have enjoyed reading about him on the net and talking to him on Facebook. I feel like I know him and I wish him luck with his acting career and going back to school.

  • Brittany

So I was really Excited for Solomon he seemed like a really great guy.and I know a lottttt of us twilighters were fighting for him to keep his roll of Sam!. I mean they could at least put him as another part in the movie he was such a nice person… But i guess in the showbiss that isn’t enough.. Personally i just really hope they don’t have micheal copon play Sam or something… it would be weird fer Taylor I’m sureee. and The thing i loved about solomon is he really made me think of La Push, I mean i love Taylor Lautner, but… he doesn’t make me this of the res. ya no? anyways… i hope the best to solomon and his carrier!

  • Bella Swannabee

Oh no! That’s so dissapointing, I would have loved it if he was recasted, yet… we did get this fact from myspace right…. hmmm…..
maybe it’s not even true. We’ll need full proof.

  • lulu

yeah. i’m not attached to him. they never made it obvious who he was in twilight, so he definitely was replaceable. i like what i learned about him, he seems nice and will hopefully do more stuff, but he still doesn’t seem like sam to me. i’m sort of glad. sorry if that hurts anyone’s feelings. in my mind, sam is just bigger and has a presence about him of leadership, protector yet dangerous, and “don’t-mess-with-me” attitude. solomon wasn’t bad, but just didn’t convince me that he was sam.

  • Linda

Okay, I mean absolutely no disrespect to Solomon Trimble because I’m sure he’s a fine actor and he seemed excited by the prospect of being in the next movie. But step back people! This barely even qualifies as news, let alone something to get all worked up about and start petitions about! The man had like two lines in the entire first movie. If IMDB hadn’t listed his character’s name as Sam Uley, would we have even known that’s who he was supposed to be? I’m sure that whoever they get to play Sam will do just great, and that Solomon will find other work. Chill – Out!

  • Bri

well its not like they said who he was in the film. plus he was kinda short and not…very cute.

&& he was only in the movie for like…five seconds. with one line.

that guy michael copon can play sam.lol

i hope they get someone good.

  • Crystal

Its sad since Solomon already has the role of Sam Uley but to be honest I dont think that he fit the role well at all. I dontt hink anyone imagined Solomon as Sam when reading the books. I think of Sam as a more masculine kind of guy with easier features on the eyes. But like i said, they should have thought of who they would want as the character throughout all of the books. So shame on Summit, but i do believe Solomon is a very good actor but Sam Uley just isnt his role.

  • Jen

oh man, NM going to be bad. I feel bad for the guy, but this is all going downhill fast. At least Twilight was good

  • DazzledByTwilight

Ok…….I have been pretty nice and calm considering this stupid fiasco by summit…but I cannot hold my tongue any longer after reading this post by Linda. For one you have absolutely no right what so ever to tell we the fans to chill out! NONE AT ALL!!! And if we want to sign a petition or have a campaign to support this actor, then that is OUR right! How dare you say you mean no disrespect to him and then say the awful hateful things that you have said? That makes no sense to me! You need to bite your tongue young lady for being so spiteful and hateful! Maybe this is barely news to you, but for Solomon Trimble fans it is VERY important news. Regardless of what you think, you are not the only Twilight fan in the universe. And who gives a flip about how imbd lists whose name is what anyway? It is the fans that matter here, the fans that would like to see a movie that is authentic and good. And a movie where the actors are dedicated to their roles (such as Solomon was to Sam) and can bring them to life on the screen (again as Solomon did with Sam). And we did not care that he had only two lines in the movie. He must have meant something because he went out and promoted the movie along with other cast members and had fans come up to him for pictures and autographs. He wrote poems, learned of the Quiluete culture and language. And even helped Taylor and Krys with these things. We all knew who he was from the beginning. You may be perfectly happy with some hollywood hotty wannabe with a tan and a trident smile just in it for the hype and will most likely not even be Native American. But most of us will be very insulted if that is the case. And yet again Summit will ruin another one of our beloved Twilight books. So Linda you are the one that needs to step back and chill out and let us be and take your hatefulness elsewhere.

  • destiniex

Kind of glad. He was never how I imagined sam to be. he needed to be bigger, more muscly.
I wouldn’t have even know his character was Sam in the first movie if I hadn’t of read it on the net.

But I wish him well for the future.

  • BellaxCullen

Ok well does it really matter? For gods sake he had TWO LINES in Twilight. and trust me on that ive seen it 19 times!
    And i qoute
jessica- You should keep bella company. Her date failed
    eric- What date
    Jessica- She invited Edward Cullen
    Bella- To be polite
Angela- I think its nice she invited him. Nobody ever does.
Mike- Ya cause Cullen’s a freak
    SAM- YOU GOT THAT RIGHT
    Bella- You guys know him
SAM- THE CULLENS DONT COME HERE.

See two lines, nin words, ten syllables, and 37 letters.
I mean its not like you went home and were like OMG i tottaly LOVED that guy who played Sam he was my favorite part of the whole Movie!
Now if thats true then… Well i would have no comment

  • Michelle

This is getting crazy. I mean, what else are they going to change? They said they’re having trouble finding Native AMerican actors and here they are getting rid of one really good Native American actor. I’m really starting to not like the way this movie is being handled.

  • NativeDancer

I definitely think that Solomon needed to be Sam!!

  • aida.m.go.go

Okay so he’s not the Sam I pictured, but he was so into his small part! I swear, read articles or interviews with/about him! Any one with that drive for a character deserves to stay! If Kristen had half the determination for this, she wouldn’t be annoying!

Rob and Taylor had the drive just like Sol did!

    He’s even:
    1) Made poetry for Leah and Emily!
    2) Learned Quileute
    3) And the brotherhood the 3 boys from La Push had in the TwilightLexicon video interview!

I heard Rob actually went that far and wrote as Edward!

I only wirte cuz I am Team La Push, I love the Werewolves!

  • asmartgirl15

HE HAD FANS LOL I DIDN”T NOTCE

  • Brianna

You guys are really overreacting to this. I mean, I’m sure he was excited and all to play Sam, but he said what? All of one or two lines in Twilight? Its really not that big a deal. I’m sure who they recast will do a great job…so get over it.

And I don’t think this movie could end up being worse than Twilight…since Twilight was absolutely horrible. I have a lot of faith in this new director. You guys are all spazzing out, but I’m sure this is a regular thing for movies – casting, recasting, changing directors, etc. Its just all behind the scenes stuff that we don’t usually see.

  • Alexandria

This is ridiculous. He deserves to be Sam.

Why is Summit insisting on changing the cast?
First, they tried to change Jacob.
    Now Sam.

    Blah.

    Team Solomon!

  • Inga

I really don’t understand why everyone is getting their panties in a bunch over this guy, he was never identified as Sam Uley in the movie so to me he’s just some random friend of Jacob’s.

Ohhhhhhh noooooo Jacob’s random friend that looks way too old to be friends with a 15 year old got recast! Oh the horror!

  • Nikki

I do not get it… If Taylor Lautner managed to stay – while Jacob’s character goes through a huge change physically – why can’t Salomon???!

  • Lea Sanders

So what, seriously? He had a very small utterance of what, less than 10 words in one scene? Easily replaceable.

  • porcelain doll

I think that I am the only one who is EXTREMELY HAPPY ABOUT THIS!!!!! His role was really small anyway, so it won’t be hard to replace him.

  • mckenzie

I think that it’s sad that he didn’t make the cut, but I mean did you guys see him in the movie? He may be an actor and yes he’s just starting out but he’s not that good. Summit just wants to have actors and we know the names to and can act and have done other projects as well. Sure it’s sad but that’s the buiz…and if your in it, you have to get over with it and look for more projects to do to prefect your skill.

  • Dylan

This stinks! I think he’s an amazing Sam I’m so dissapointed!

  • Sassy97027

Grr! That angers me! I was looking forward to Soloman being Sam. I hope that they atleast cast a Native American for the part. I think they need to leave the Native parts for the Natives.

  • Jennifer

In “Twilight” they never told you he was “Sam” so there was no character binging there, that was something people did all on their own. I truthfully think that they need to go for a more attractive “Sam” to captivate the audience…Solomon was kind of BLAH to me in such a key role…sorry guys.

Ok, Im a huge fan of the movie and anything that is related with Twilight, But, I feel that the worst thing Summit couldv’e done to the sagga is; change the plot sooo much that is unidentifyable, disregard
fan warnings, REPLACE CHARACTERS FOR A SEQUAL, not include at least 10 beloved lines, turn Twilight into some elemetry hit, etc. This just might be a warning that those unforgivable actions are soon to come. I mean, im not all gloom and doom, but, we as loyal fans have our worries. If they remove any more keen characters or scenes, even if they are worrying about time, I think they need to read the entire sequal at least 5 times. Just to commit and regard the importantce of those characters and scenes in the long run. :)
