CHRIS WEITZ AND STEPHENIE MEYER ANNOUNCE THAT TAYLOR LAUTNER WILL BE PLAYING JACOB BLACK

On her official website, StephenieMeyer.com, Stephenie Meyer herself, and Chris Weitz confirm that Taylor Lautner will be reprising his role as Jacob Black in New Moon.

Below is the official statement:

Good news about New Moon from director Chris Weitz:

I’m very happy to announce that Taylor Lautner will be playing Jacob Black in New Moon and that he’s doing so with the enthusiastic support of Summit Entertainment, the producers, and Stephenie Meyer.

The characters in Stephenie’s books go through extraordinary changes of circumstance and also appearance; so it is not surprising that there has been speculation about whether the same actor would portray a character who changes in so many surprising ways throughout the series. But it was my first instinct that Taylor was, is, and should be Jacob, and that the books would be best served by the actor who is emotionally right for the part. I think that fans of Twilight the book and the movie will be surprised by the Jacob Black that Taylor will bring to the screen in New Moon; and I’m looking forward to working with him and the rest of the cast in realizing the film.

I’d just like to add that I was very much a part of this decision. My first priority was always what was best for New Moon—what was going to give us the best possible movie. I’m truly thrilled that Taylor was the one who proved to the director, to Summit, and to me that he is the best possible Jacob we could have. And I’m very much looking forward to seeing what he’s going to bring to Jacob’s character this year.

I’d just like to say I literally screamed when I saw the official statement. I am jumping for joy! I am very pleased that Taylor was chosen, and I am confident he will do the role justice.

    When I saw in the recent posts about Chris Weitz and Stephanie Meyer Announce, I took a deep breath, clicked on the headline and started to read and jumped up and screamed. I am so excited that Taylor was chosen. At the end of the Twilight Movie when Taylor and Robert look at each other in character as rivals, you knew right then that no one else could play Jacob, they had the connection. Congratulations to Taylor for going after what he wanted and showing us perseverance pays off.

    It’s 8:00 pm and I’m just checking my e-mail,long day – yada yada yada and YAY – Surprise! I think I literally leaped, my 10 year old started squealing when she heard me cheering. Congratulations to the only man for the job! This truly restores my faith in Chris HOWEVER, I was watching some behind the scenes stuff of Twilight on youtube lastnight and got all misty listening to Lady Catherine talk about her passion for movies with teenagers and young love and teen angst.     Glad to hear that Weitz has caught on to what the rest of us already knew. Taylor was a great choice for Twilight, and he’s got every bit of the breakout potential as Jacob that RPattz brought as Edward in the first film. Like I said before — this kid’s career is gonna go through the roof.

I cried when I read this confirmation and I couldn’t believe it but now it’s true I have been dancing everywhere just like Alice! YES! My wolf boy!     I am so HAPPY that Taylor fought for his role and won it! I don’t know who else besides Michael Copon was rumored to be up for the role of Jacob, but Taylor is such a good fit! When it boils down to it, I think that Twilighters would rather see an actor bring Jacob’s essence to life, not just some bigger guy…I’m all about Edward but…GO TAYLOR!

    at first i was a bit torn, as michael copon does suit the looks of jacob black in new moon compared to taylor… but none the less i am completely content that he is being given the role again… not only because i believe he has alot of potential for the role but also because I HATE IT WHEN CONTINUITY IS BROKEN BETWEEN FILMS IN A SERIES!!!

    I’m thrilled for Taylor…I think it’s always best to keep continuity when it comes to sequels, and while I was a little concerned about the possibility of him being able to pull off the older-Jacob part of the rest of the series, I always hoped that he could prove he could do it because I really liked him as Jacob.

    So glad to hear that Taylor is recast. I am totally Team Edward, lol, but thought he did a nice job in the few lines he had. I don’t like Jacob in the books *at all* but won’t hold that against poor Taylor.
    :-) He worked really hard to keep the role, so good for him! I liked the looks he and Rob gave each other at prom. In regards to someone who said he has the potential for breakout status like Rob, I don’t think that will happen. He’s a cute kid and will definitely get more parts bec. of this, but Rob’s one of a kind, this ‘Robmania” hasn’t been seen since Leo in Titanic. Rob has the sexiness, “come hither” bedroom eyes, and goofy British charm and he knows how to work all of it, lol. There’s a reason Rob will be in NM more, he is their cssh cow. Rob is also an adult and his fan base is more extensive, cough cough, lots of adult women swooning. :-) I can’t wait to see how they make Taylor look taller and older, good thing CW has SFX experience. I am ready for this movie now!

    Yay!!! Even though I’m firmly Team Edward, I love Taylor as Jacob and know he will do a fantastic job. He shouldn’t have been made to jump through hoops for a part he already had in a movie that has made more than 250 million dollars! Who, in their right mind at least, changes any of the cast when a movie is that successful? I’m glad that Taylor impressed Chris enough to keep the job. I can’t believe that they didn’t even screentest anybody else or contact those 2 other actors-why put Taylor and the fans through this? Good question.
    Just glad this part is over! Good news today-this and we finally got a DVD release date of March 21.

    Ok so I have to say that I am 100% Team Edward!!!!!! Therefore when it came to casting Jacob I didn’t really care either way, but Taylor obviously proved himself and went hardcore for what he wanted and I admire that A LOT!     I am disappointed. I think this is the first misstep of many Chris Weitz has taken/ will take. Taylor was NOT the right person for Jacob. Those who think he was read a different series than I did.

    I met him at the premiere and he was SUCH a sweetheart. My camera froze and he patiently waited so i could take a pic with him. Sweetheart I tell you. Besides, what would we do w/ our Jacob tee shirts that have HIS face on em? I would not have supported Copon. He came off as cocky and arrogant. Saying Taylor weighed 160 ‘if he was lucky’ serious?

    They were worried that his face was too soft and babyish…I think they’ll get over that with MAKEUP. Jacob does go through a lot of change in the second book. I know, that’s an understatement. I’m sure they will show a transformation from the beginning to when he starts to change. Leaving aside who is played by Jacob, people, and fans, don’t like it when you swap out main characters for a sequel. I’m glad they stuck to it.

TL is going to have to carry a huge portion of this movie and I don’t think he will be believable. He is ‘emotionally’ invested? If so he would see he is not right for the part, but he got desperate with his begging and made it hard for them to choose someone else w/o crushing him. That is immaturity.
    If this movie sucks, don’t come complaining! You can kiss Eclipse goodbye also if it does.

    I”ve never had a doubt in my mind that Taylor was Jacob. He’s been the one casting choice that I knew instantly was a good one. I’m okay that he doesn’t look 25 and isn’t 6’5. Jacob was never a serious contender for Bella heart like Edward was. I’ve always seen Jacob as “the little brother” in Bella’s life. So I’ve never been looking for someone to be Edward’s rival because Jacob was never Edward’s rival except in Jacob’s head.

    Im super please that Taylor will be playing Jacob black but im a Team Edward all the way!!! I can’t wait for the next movie to come out, i just hope they don’t change it too much like they did with the first movie.
