STEPHENIE SATURDAY: STEPHENIE’S PLAYLISTS - ‘I’M NOT OKAY (I PROMISE)’

We’re back with your weekly edition of Stephenie Saturday, and this week marks the second installment of our new feature, Stephenie’s Playlists. For this week’s playlist highlight, TA Staffers Valerie and Rebecca bring us a video for the song “I’m Not Okay (I Promise)” by My Chemical Romance, discuss the band, their music, and how they fit into the Twilight universe. As per usual with Stephenie Saturday, we’ve also added some questions for consideration for you to think about and respond to.

I’m Not Okay (I Promise) - My Chemical Romance

Questions:

- Do you like this song? Do you think it fits Twilight?
- Why do you think Stephenie included I’m Not Okay (I Promise) to her playlist?
- What did you think of this live performance of the song on the Late Show with David Letterman?
- Are you a fan of My Chemical Romance? If so, were you a fan before Stephenie included them on her playlist for Twilight, or did you become one after? What is your favorite My Chemical Romance song?

About My Chemical Romance

My Chemical Romance, commonly abbreviated as MCR or My Chem, was formed in Jersey City, New Jersey, USA in 2001. Ray Toro was added to the band in 2001 because, at the time, Gerard Way couldn’t sing and play guitar at the same time. Their main musical influences are Queen, Iron Maiden, the Misfits, Morrissey and The Smiths. They have toured with many bands including Muse, The All-American Rejects, Good Charlotte, Bon Jovi, and Fall Out Boy. The band’s name came from Irvin Welsh’s 3 Tales of the Chemical Romance.

My Chemical Romance has won eight awards including a Kerrang! Award in 2006 for Best Band on the Planet, an NME Award in 2007 for Best International Band, and a TRL Award in 2006 for Best Band That Actually Plays. They were also nominated for a Grammy in 2008 for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package - The Black Parade.

According to an article on Buzznet, My Chemical Romance have stated that even though they have been influential in Stephenie Meyer’s writing, they have no intention of appearing on the soundtrack for New Moon. None of the band members have read the series, but lead guitarist Ray Toro’s wife has. As stated by Frank Iero, “None of us has read that. It’s not something we’d be huge fans of, so we wouldn’t be interested in it.”

Band members include:

- Gerard Way – lead vocals (2001-present)
- Ray Toro – lead guitar, backing vocals (2001-present)
- Frank Iero – rhythm guitar, backing vocals (2002-present)
- Mikey Way – bass (2001-present)
- Bob Bryar – drums, percussion (2004-present)

Former member:
- Matt Pelissier – drums, percussion (2001-2004)

Studio albums include:

- I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love (2002)
- Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge (2004)
- The Black Parade (2006)

Live albums include:

- Life on the Murder Scene (2006)
- The Black Parade Is Dead! (2008)
- ¡Venganza! (2009)

Tours:
- Warped Tour (A touring music and extreme sports festival) (2005)
- My Chemical Romance Tour (September 2005)
- The Black Parade World Tour (Febuary 2007)
- Projekt Revolution (A musical festival hosted by Linkin Park) (2007)

YEHH! I’m the first one. I am a little out of touch with some of the fairly new music out there, but I have heard of MCR before Meyer included the band in her acknoweledgements.I mainly listen to the lithium station. I do like their music what I have heard especially this song. I have heard of them way before I had even heard of Stephenie Meyer’s novels. This is a kickin song though.

  2. Macyn Cullen responded:

I believe this song is a great fit for Twilight becuase it expresses some of the emotion in side of it. There are also lyrics that are also quotes in Twilight. :) I was a fan of MCR before Twilight becase my best friend and I discovered there song, Helena, on SingStar. My favorite My Chem song would have to be either Helena or Thank You For The Venom.

    - Do you like this song? Do you think it fits Twilight?-Yes i like the song i dont think it would fit twilight though.
    - Why do you think Stephenie included I’m Not Okay (I Promise) to her playlist?-maybe because there are a lot of parts in twilight when edward or bella dont feel ok?
    - What did you think of this live performance of the song on the Late Show with David Letterman?-awesome
    - Are you a fan of My Chemical Romance? If so, were you a fan before Stephenie included them on her playlist for Twilight, or did you become one after?-I was one before I knew Stephanie like them
What is your favorite My Chemical Romance song?-Mama

  5. Madeleine responded:

hmmm. i don’t think it fits in with Twilight. Simpley because it’s too ’shouty’and ‘head-banging-ish’ and the guitar solo is good, but just doesn’t fit in with Twilight.

  6. Maria Cristina responded:

I LOVE THIS BAND WITH ALL MY HEART! And this is actually my fav song!!!
But it wouldn’t fit Twilight (: Im kinda glad they don’t want to do it cause it proves theyre not selling out :D
THEY ARE AMAZING LIVE!!! (I’ve seen them :D )
Ohhh I have been a fan for a LONGGGGG time :D

  7. Camila responded:

I love this song but I do not think that is appropriate for Twilight :)

  8. porcelain doll responded:

First of all, let me just state that I AM IN LOVE WITH MCR!!!!!!
    Alright. Now to the questions:

    - Do you like this song? Do you think it fits Twilight?
Yes. I love love love this song. And I also love love love Twilight, but this song would not fit Twilight- the two don’t mix well together.

    - Why do you think Stephenie included I’m Not Okay (I Promise) to her playlist?
I think that she included it in her playlist because of the angsty, angry, sarcastic feeling that the song has. It kinda relates to how Edward feels sometimes.

    - What did you think of this live performance of the song on the Late Show with David Letterman?
I thought that the performance was really good, but I have heard them do better. But, anything Gerard Way does is amazing, so, so was this performance.

    - Are you a fan of My Chemical Romance? If so, were you a fan before Stephenie included them on her playlist for Twilight, or did you become one after? What is your favorite My Chemical Romance song?
I am a HUGE GINORMOUS fan of My Chemical Romance. I did not know that Stephenie included them in her playlist. I became a fan on my own [well, me and a friend]. What is my favorite My Chem song. That is a really hard question. Right now, my favorite song of theirs is either ‘Kill All Your Friends,’ ‘I Never Told You What I Do For A Living,’ or ‘Mama.’ But I LOVE all their songs.

  9. kerri responded:

I actually really like this band, alot. I saw their video, ‘I’m not okay’, and fell in love with their cheekiness. Their videos remind me of Fall out Boy. But their music is much much stronger, in your face. It commands your attention. I think that song would be great for everyone involved in New Moon.

BUT, I saw an interview on MTV were the band said they wern’t interested in writting any music for the soundtrack. Too bad. Their the most vamptastic group out there! Gerard looks like the Cullen’s cousin. Maybe a Denali cousin? LOL!

  10. Karlie responded:

i love mychem and have known about them for years!!!!!!!!
there music is inspirational to many and now that stephanie says d\she likes them, i love her even more.
its a shame though they dont want to be on the soundtrack though because that would of benn awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. claire responded:

    - Why do you think Stephenie included I’m Not Okay (I Promise) to her playlist?

I think SM added this song because it fits Edward’s angst and Bella’s moods as well.

    - What did you think of this live performance of the song on the Late Show with David Letterman?

I loved it. Many of their videos are live performances and in this one, you get a feel for who they are, despite that it is a talk show venue and not a concert.

    - Are you a fan of My Chemical Romance? If so, were you a fan before Stephenie included them on her playlist for Twilight, or did you become one after? What is your favorite My Chemical Romance song?

I was not before finding them on SM’s playlist. This song pulls you in…and they are from Jersey City so they get points for that :)

  12. Nalia responded:

    gosh! i love them!!
