STEPHENIE SATURDAY: ‘NEW MOON’ – WHY DID EDWARD LEAVE?

Posted March 7th, 2009 By: Team Switzerland 15 Comments »

Even with the upcoming DVD release of ‘Twilight’, there is no doubt that we’re all crazy about ‘New Moon’ right now, too. Some may say it’s their favorite book, and some may say it’s their least favorite – but, no matter if you love the book or not, we all ask ourselves: “Why DID Edward leave?” So whether you’ve heard the answer straight from Stephenie Meyer or not, it’s always great to revisit and think about how the story would have been had Edward not left.

So this week in our edition of Stephenie Saturday, TA Staffer Claire has brought us the answer to the question: “Why did Edward leave?” In addition to this, we’ve also provided some questions to get you to think a little bit harder about the impact it would have made if Edward had stayed.

To read (and respond to!) this question, click here.

I think that edward leaving was soooooooo devastating. to make things worse i read that part on thanksgiving at my friends and i was crying so i had to leave the rm and go to the closet. I think that edward leaving was completly bad but it lead to great things in the end!

i think bella would have ended up with jacob because as she says in the book, she wouldnt know what it would be like without edward

Edward left because he thought he thought he’d be protecting Bella due to him being so dangerous around her. He’s not dangerous himself but because of their relationship being so unusual it attracts unwanted dangers eg James. So with Edward nit around Bella can’t be in any danger anymore.

edward leaving is the cause of everything that happens in the following books. if he didnt leave then bella and jacob would’t be best friends, jacob wouldnt kiss bella and bella and edward probably would get married. also, edward wouldnt turn bella into a vampire after the painful birth of their daughter and jacob wouldnt have imprinted on renesmee. also, Bella wouldnt be aware of the volturi when she goes to save edward from killing himself. therefore edward’s leaving is a major event in New moon.

I think she should be with Jacob, I do think that Edward left because he was selfish. Bella was broken-hearted when he left. If would have done that same thing to me, I would have never forgiven him. He totally left her there, with no protection- he was her protection, so by leaving her he put her out for even more danger than if he would have stayed. Stupid decision. Stupid Edward.

I dont think she would ever end up with Jacob because Edward and Bella both knew how hard it was for them and i think Edward would have came back if Jacob didnt pick up the phone.

ed leaves cuz he is sooo afraid that bella might get hurt for hanging out with with..

but i also believe that he goes away with the cullens because he is also concerned about the little incident with jasper… he does believe that it might be “healthy” for them go go away, al least for a little while, until things get straight..

while i read the book i trully missed him! :´(
but when he came vack i was like… HAPPY DANCE!!

I dont think she would have ended up with jacob in any way. there meant to be best friends, but she did love him too.

i think even if edward hadnt left, bella still wouldnt have gone to jacob. in eclipse she said she didnt know if she would have left edward, but she was so used to the knowing how it felt for him to have left her, so she knows she never would leave him.
doesnt mean though that she would have left him otherwise.
    she loves him!
and everyone knows he left her so he could protect her, because he thought he was putting her in more and more danger.
    ah sweet, sweet edward :]

Edward leaving was probably the most pivotal action in the book. Had Edward not left, Bella and Jacobs friendship would have never been as close as it was, Edward wouldn’t have realized how much he and Bella actually “required” each other just to survive and continue on, Jacob wouldn’t have communicated to his pack how much Bella meant to him, which in turn had them behind the Cullens and friends when the Volturi came, (even before the imprinting of Nessie). So had Edward not left, all of the lessons learned and gained, not have been able to take place.
I also cried when he left her, I felt her pain and also felt the emptiness, but Stephanie knew she had to do something to change the tide and I think she did a beautiful job, with this one little essential piece of the pie.

This is one of those questions with no easy answers…but IMHO, Edward left because in many ways, despite the fact that he’s over one hundred years old, he is still a 17-year old BOY. And he’s thinking like one where Bella is concerned because he has not other point of reference-not with love, not with girls and especially not with human girls he loves. He leaves because he (stupidly) underestimates Bella’s love for him as well. Plus, and this is the really interesting sub-text of the whole thing, Edward has no Faith. Not in himself, not in love to be eternal, not in anything. I mean he doesn’t even have faith in the fact that he has a soul so how can he believe in anything else? His leaving was brutal; for everyone. But Edward *had* to leave; that’s the point at which he finally begins to become the MAN that he needs to be both for Bella and forhimself.

Twilightbloom, that was beautifully put, I never realized that till now, that before he was a boy but when he returned he was a man. Certainly different for sure.

I was one of those who skipped parts in new moon the first read, so find it great that Stephanie shared what she did about the readers and how they may respond with new moon. Going back and reading the book in length did add incredible insight into these particular characters evolving in eclipse. And I think that by Edward leaving, Bella was able to evolve into a more mature character as well. She took more risks with new adventures and allowed herself to be more emotional, in front of others, than she had in twilight. She learned how to stand up for more of what she wanted from others too.

Does bella & edward hav a child wen he cums bak????

i just need to know that even though edward has left her, he still cares about her. it kills me, she is so devestated and doesnt know, she just doesnt know. HOW CAN HE DO THAT TO HER. is he hurt at all?

  • melissa

if u read the book.. it KILLED edward leaving her.. he tried to track victoria nd was depressed just like she was.. HE WAS GOING TO COME BACK.. he couldnt spend another day without her.. even if she didnt want him.. he would of spent the rest of her life watching her.. of course he loved her.. omg im guessing noone read what edward told her at the end of new moon.. him leaving made them both have a stronger love for eachother. i just hope they show this in the movie.. i hope they have edward tell bella how sorry he was nd what it felt like when he wasnt with her.. to show how hard it was to be without her.. they better have him say he loves her nd he wants to marry her.. jus stick to the book more!!! i love edward nd bella forever!!!!
