Stephenie Meyer on The New Statesman’s 50 People Who Matter

Posted September 29th, 2010 By: Evie 2 Comments »

The New Statesman has just come out with their list of The 50 People Who Matter, and Stephenie Meyer has made the list! The list is comprised of people they believe have world-changing potential, for good or for bad. Read more below:

With 100 million copies sold and three films that have grossed over $1bn, the Twilight sagas have made the author one of the most powerful, and richest, women in publishing.

Meyer’s Mormon beliefs permeate the vampire trilogy with themes of chastity and self-control, making Twilight propaganda for America’s growing abstinence movement.

Woo-hoo! Go Stephenie! I’m not sure I buy that Twilight promotes America’s growing abstinence movement, but glad she made the list.

Stephenie Meyer on Writing, Her Fans and Producing ‘Breaking Dawn’

Posted September 17th, 2010 By: Evie 6 Comments »

It’s Friday again! So that means we have more from the infamous interview when Stephenie Meyer sat down with a few Twilight fansites right before the theatrical release of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. This Friday Twilight Series Theories has a great transcription and audio clip of the part of the interview where Stephenie talks about how Twilight has affected people’s lives, her fans, her love for writing and why she’s excited to be a producer on The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn. Read more below:

Fansite: Alright, we have a two-parter. What made you decide to put the producer’s hat on for Breaking Dawn, and what do you think you bring to that last movie?

SM: I don’t think it’s gonna change that much. I do feel like—I mean Breaking Dawn is tricky. It’s real tricky. Now I feel more like we have handle on it, because the scripts and with Bill Condon, I am more calm; but originally, I was very much on the fence as to: “Maybe we shouldn’t make this into a movie”, you know? Some things really can’t be made into movies and come across exactly the right way, so it was a big struggle for me to go forward. I knew that it would disappoint a lot of people and that was really one of the main impetuses was that people would be like: “What?!” I didn’t want to disappoint people. So I was concerned, so my plan was and still is to be there everyday, and so as a producer I can do that. And so it’s really a lot about being in the room and you know it’s gonna be a lot of upheaval in my life but I felt like it was important. And then it’s…you know it’s the last one so I kind of feel like: “Okay I’m gonna commit to it this year, I’ll get it done and then I won’t do that again”. But…and then, you know, I also—I get to be more involved in some of the—

(chatter and laughter)

SM: I think that we will have a little bit more of a say in the music, which would be a big deal. We’d have—we’ll be…Instead of hearing about the decisions afterwards we’ll be there when they’re being made and that’s gonna help. With Eclipse I was pretty much right on the line with producing. I was very much involved with the script and a lot of the choices, and so it’s not a huge difference but it’ll be really an interesting experience.

What do you think of Stephenie’s view on interviews? Are you glad she’s a producer for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn?

Stephenie Meyer Talks Volvos, Sequels with Renesmee and Leah and Edward’s Chivalry

Posted September 10th, 2010 By: Evie 3 Comments »

It’s Friday again! So that means we have yet more from the interview when Stephenie Meyer sat down with a few Twilight fansites right before the theatrical release of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. This Friday Twilight Series Theories has a great transcription and audio clip of the part of the interview where Stephenie talks about her feelings on the Volvo color change in the movies, the characters she would most like to do sequels with and how she just enjoys writing – not to send out a message or make a point. Check out more below:

Fansite: If you were forced to write a sequel or some novella, which—what character or characters would you do?

SM: If I were to go ahead with sequels, and I think that I’ve already stated this in some book thing, I would tell it from two narrators again, although I think I’d switch back and forth and it would be Nessie and Leah. And you know it’s funny because a lot of people are like—I’ve read a lot of theories about why I felt compelled to have Bella have a baby and there’s only one reason and it’s not because—there isn’t a lot of really negative stuff—it’s not because you know Bella needed to have a baby or anything, it’s because I knew—it was really clear because I’d already done “Forever Dawn”—once Bella becomes a vampire she loses her relatability. But Nessie was created because she was the logical voice, you have someone who’s half-human, half-vampire who doesn’t fit in anywhere and is an outsider in some ways, but then loved and cherished by her family. But all the intricacies—she had so many problems, so many challenges so she was so attractive to me as a narrator. And then Leah, of course, obviously is left open, right? I can’t—I couldn’t solve all the problems in this because I didn’t want to end it. I mean clearly the Volturi, that wasn’t the end, end. I needed to get to an ending spot for now, but you know I…I just couldn’t see them, the Volturi—they’re smart, they’re patient, they’ve been doing this forever—they’re not going to get into this situation and not say, “Oh we need to reevaluate.” It didn’t make sense for me—them as characters to just go ahead with it, for me. But like, Nessie’s supposed to tell the story next and Leah has a story to tell too and so that’s where it would go.

Stephenie Meyer on the Volturi, Music and Muse

Posted September 3rd, 2010 By: Evie 3 Comments »

We have yet another interview from when Stephenie Meyer sat down with a few Twilight fansites right before the theatrical release of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. This Friday Twilight Series Theories has a great transcription and audio clip of the part of the interview where Stephenie talks about the very scary Volturi, her admiration for Michael Sheen and Jamie Campbell Bower and all of the music that has inspired her and was used in the movies. Check out more below:

Fansite: I think you might’ve touched on this before a little bit earlier, but you said that sometimes Jane does act on her own a little bit.

SM: This is really kind of a…I mean, Aro is very controlling. He is the pinnacle and he has all the power and so he calls the shots but in this specific case knowing with Alice he has to deviate from the pattern and so he let Jane make her…You know he said, “Go out.” And not even specifically about them because Alice could see that, you know just “Jane, I think that you are very much fantastic and I want you to go out and take care of things in the world that need to be taken care of on your own. I think you can make your own decisions.” And Jane is like: “Ah, I know what this is about.” And so she goes out there and she knows it’s her mission. She knows it’s about the Cullens. She knows that she has to effect some kind of progress there, but how to do it. So yeah that’s Jane. You could write a story about Jane through [that] month of frustration and all the stuff she was trying to do and not screwing up so that when she came home Aro didn’t decide “maybe I don’t need someone who can burn people.”

Fansite: I’m kinda, when you…I think I connected even more with the books when I was on your website and saw Muse on it ‘cause I was like: “Aw, this takes me back to high school.” ‘Cause I’m not…not necessarily all of their music [does that] but that’s when they were writing a lot of really good stuff and it’s kind of funny that they’re so popular now ‘cause they were out back then.

SM: When I first heard them like nobody had heard about them. The thing that for me that fits with the way I write and the way that they’re music strikes me, I guess, is that they are so…they’re not cynical about it. They throw themselves into it. They live that emotion and there’s no sense of like: “I’m gonna hold back and be a little sarcastic” or whatever. They just [put] pure emotion into the songs whatever it is. It’s the end of the world? It’s the end of the world! Like they don’t…They take it seriously, and when I write I don’t like to be cynical I want to just feel the emotions and so their songs work really well for me that way.

What do you think of Stephenie’s explanations on Aro and Jane? What do you think of her thoughts on the soundtrack and why she admires Muse?

Stephenie Meyer on ‘Breaking Dawn’s’ “Breaking Down” and ‘Twilight’ Merchandise

Posted August 28th, 2010 By: Evie No Comments »

There is still more from the interview from when Stephenie Meyer sat down with a few Twilight fansites right before the theatrical release of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. This Friday Twilight Series Theories has a great transcription and audio clip of the part of the interview where Stephenie talks about her thoughts on the upcoming Breaking Dawn, feeling burned out and dreaming up “Breaking Down”, Twilight merchandise and her appreciation for Billy Burke and Anna Kendrick. Check out more below:

SM: “Breaking Down” was actually a project for awhile. There was awhile where you get burned out. We came up with an alternate Breaking Dawn called “Breaking Down”.

Fansite: Nice.

SM: It was awesome.

Fansite: There was a lot of really good stuff.

SM: Spiraling downward into the destruction of Bella Swan’s life and everyone around her. Charlie ended up being a meth addict. It was cool. No, no it was awesome! Okay, so it starts out with Bella on the same cliff, right? But this time she’s taking her life and she’s going back over like everything that’s happened to get to this point, and it all kind of got started because there was trouble and Alice and Jacob…I forget how it works. Jacob killed Alice right? And it was somewhat Bella’s fault.

Fansite: What?!

SM: No, no. It was “Breaking Down.” So Alice is dead and Edward is horrified because this is Bella’s fault and he like backhands Bella and disappears. He’s gone. All the Cullens are gone. Alice is dead. The Cullens are gone. So Bella’s in the hospital on heavy pain meds which is how Charlie got addicted, and she ends up marrying Mike because you know she settles and she marries Mike. And so she’s stuck with Mike and it’s really depressing and then he leaves her for Eric Yorkie. Oh and Lauren Mallory wins America’s Next Top Model. Um and then Charlie ends up getting killed by drug dealers and so …I think her mom died in a car accident somewhere. And so she ends up…there’s nothing so she’s gonna kill herself and then she thinks at the very edge at the cliff at the end: “You know? This is stupid. I’m not gonna kill myself. I’m gonna rebound. I’m gonna forge a new life.” She turns around; she trips and falls over anyway.

What do you think of Stephenie’s crazy “Breaking Down”? Do you agree with her thoughts on Billy and Anna?

Stephenie Meyer on ‘Breaking Dawn’ and ‘Eclipse’ Alternate Endings

Posted August 20th, 2010 By: Evie 5 Comments »

As you know Stephenie Meyer sat down with a few Twilight fansites right before the theatrical release of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. This Friday Twilight Series Theories has a great transcription and audio clip of the part of the interview where Stephenie talks about her thoughts on the Breaking Dawn storyline and her secret alternate ending for Eclipse. Check out more below:

SM: There are the gory things. And the birth scene’s gonna be tricky you know? Particularly because directors love that kind of stuff: “Alright!” We were just talking about like: “We gotta have this and that!” I dunno. It’s so funny how people are so freaked out by the birth scene.

Fansite: We need a director’s cut. An unrated version.

SM: I find a kind of mind with people who have had children or been around that and people who haven’t in how they receive that. Because if you’ve been through a birth scene you know this is a messy, freaky, screamy thing. And you kind of have to take that to the x power, right? You have to take it up a notch. And so for me it was really fun to write, and I didn’t even think that it was like: “Wow, this is cool! This is blood and gore! Come on let’s go!” And then like I sent it to Jodi, who’s never had children, and she’s like—

Jodi: Well no, it wasn’t that.

SM: But I think that there’s—

Jodi: I do not have children, that is true. But, it was, again I’m thinking that it’s a YA audience is what I was thinking. I was thinking with an agent’s perspective.

SM: But I was very proud I made her squeamish.

Jodi: I was just like: “This isn’t gonna make the cut. No, I’m sorry.” I was like—

SM: It got toned down.

Jodi: What were some of the other…Didn’t you say like some of the “ripping” and the bones cracking?

SM: Yeah, there were specific words like “shredding” that we had problems with.

Fansite:How do you see it playing out in your mind?

SM: Um, it’s interesting. I think that it’ll be very like the book from Bella’s perspective. So you know it’ll be what she’s seeing of this scene and everything. Um, which is actually more like Forever Dawn because we have Jacob’s perspective in this. And I don’t think that the Jacob’s perspective will be nearly as pronounced in the movies. Um you know I think it’s gonna—

Fansites: Aw.

SM: Yeah. It made me a little bit sad. I mean I think we’re gonna get some good moments, but they feel like they have to keep it Bella and Edward centric so…I mean I can see that. I know how people respond to it. He’s got some good stuff though.
