TA BOOK CLUB: ‘NEW MOON’ CHAPTER FIVE AND SIX – CHEATER AND FRIENDS

Summary
Hikers come into the store where Bella and Mike are working and report sighting an enormous, pitch black animal in the woods. That night, Bella dreams she is searching in the woods and finds nothing. With Edward’s absence, there is no longer anything to search for. When she wakes up, Bella fears the hole in her heart is never going to heal even though Edward had promised it would be as if he never existed. Since he cheated on his end of the promise, Bella decides she is going to cheat on her end too. Bella finds some motorcycles headed for the dump. Remembering Jacob Black’s mechanical skills, she takes the bikes out to La Push to see if her old friend can help her. Jacob is all too eager to help Bella out. This kind of recklessness is something Bella knows would upset Edward. It also might be the exact amount of danger she needs to see her vision of Edward again.

Quote
The quote I chose for this chapter is on page 124, and belongs to Bella. I like this quote because I think it helped me understand how Bella had come to terms with her pain. It’s almost a revelation. I also think this makes the reckless behavior so much more understandable.
“I wondered how long this could last. Maybe someday, years from now—if the pain would just decrease to the point where I could bear it—I would be able to look back on those few short months that would always be the best of my life. And, if it were possible that the pain would ever soften enough to allow me to do that, I was sure that I would feel grateful for as much time as he’d given me. More than I’d asked for, more than I’d deserved. Maybe someday I’d be able to see it that way.”

Chapter Five Song: She’s A Rebel by Green Day
I chose this song because I feel like Bella made a huge decision in this chapter. She came to terms with the fact that Edward was always going to be a painful hole in her heart. In doing that, she made the decision to change her life. Since Edward could never make it as if he’d never existed, she could go back on her end of the agreement and be reckless. I think this decision allowed Bella to grow. She discovered parts of herself that she didn’t know existed. Before Bella decided to be reckless, she was always the mature one that demonstrated perfect self-control. Although the intention was sad, Bella desperately trying to see Edward, I like seeing Bella develop this part of herself. I picture this song playing when Bella first sees the motorcycles. I think it symbolizes the freedom from her predictable, safe life.
What did you think of this song for chapter 5?

Book To Movie
I felt like the movie skipped over most of this chapter with good reason. I think the movie would have drug out too long had we seen every dream Bella had. The motorcycle scene was shortened. Rather than going to someone’s door to ask about the bikes, Bella just picks them up and takes them to Jacob. Just like the book, Jacob is overly eager to help out. They really made it obvious that Jacob was absolutely psyched to spend more time with Bella.

Summary
Jacob’s friends Quil and Embry show up at the shed where Bella and Jacob are working on the motorcycles, and start teasing them about dating. This makes Jacob nervous, and it’s clear that the friendship means more to him than it does to Bella. Although Bella doesn’t reciprocate the romantic feelings, she starts enjoying herself more and more around Jacob. For the first night since Edward left, Bella sleeps without nightmares.
Later on, Billy invites a large group of people, including Charlie and Bella, for dinner at his house. Bella enjoys being around the Quileute gathering, and meets many other people from the reservation. That night Bella dreams about Sam Uley in the woods. His form is fuzzy and unclear and he appears to be changing.
As Bella continues to emerge from her depression, she attempts to reconnect with some of her old friends at school. Angela and Mike are the only two who are readily willing to forgive her. Angela tells Bella about a large, black animal she saw in the woods similar to the story the hikers reported at the store. Angela also reminds Bella that she has now been in Forks a full year. In one year, Bella realizes she has come full circle from the way things were when she first arrived. Once again, she is starting new without Edward.

Now what do you think of the change in Bella’s dreams?

Quote
The quote I chose for this chapter is on page 145, and is about Jacob. I love the way Bella describes Jacob. I feel like it really describes the theme of his friendship with her throughout the series, and especially in New Moon.
“Jacob was simply a perpetually happy person, and he carried that happiness with him like an aura, sharing it with whoever was near him. Like an earthbound sun, whenever someone was within his gravitational pull, Jacob warmed them. It was natural, a part of who he was. No wonder I was so eager to see him.”

Music
Chapter Six Song: Here Comes The Sun by The Beatles
I love Bella’s transformation in this chapter. I picked this song, not only because Bella describes Jacob as “an earthbound sun”, but because it really reflects a brighter change in Bella’s whole view of the world. I picture this song playing while Bella and Jacob are shopping for motorcycle parts, and continuing into the dinner at the Black’s house where everyone is having a really good time. I think this song would start playing as Bella reflects on the happiness Jacob has brought into the dark world she’d been living in.
What did you think of this song for chapter 6?
Are there any other songs that you think would fit this chapter well?
Book To Movie
Most of chapter 6 is included in the movie, and stays true to the book. Quill and Embry show up in Jacob’s homemade garage to tease him and Bella about dating. We also get to see some of the progression of Bella and Jacob’s friendship, although shopping for motorcycle parts is left out. The movie also stayed true to the story when Bella tries to reconnect with her school friends. It’s obvious Mike and Angela are more than willing to be friends again, while most of the others show little to no interest in her. In the movie, Mike adds more of a humorous twist to being her friend again (wasn’t the protein line hilarious?). I think one of the biggest scenes that was left out of the movie was the dinner at the Black’s house. Although the movie skipped over some of this chapter, I think they continued to stay true to the story.

Chapter 5. I was looking forward to seeong the parts where Bella worked in the store but they left it out for good reason. I also wanted to see what the director thought teh house that she got the bikes from should have looked. The changes they made to her dreams in the movie were legitimate for the movie. A little girl was behind me when I went to see it the second time and when Bella was screaming from her nightmares the girl asked “Woe what is she psychopathic?” Obviously the mom did not have her read the books as well. It just erked me is all. Anyway I dono I love this whole book this part in perticular because Bella is taking a stand and telling Edward basically that it is not fair that he left and is not holding up to his part of the bargain. The Jacob scenes I kinda drudged through them in the book kinda thinking oh great so the books go on with her with Jacob I wanna stop reading now but I couldn’t I had to find out what happened to my Edward and if he would come back. I love the scene in the movie it is so much fun to watch and I listen to “Shootin the moon” over and over again when I am down and it puts me in a good mood because I think about that scene. My favorite part in the book during the Jacob scenes were when they drank the warm sodas. I am not sure why that sticks out in my mind so much but it does. I guess I thought about hanging out with my friends in high school and not caring if teh sodas were warm, cold, name brand or cheep-o as long as we had soda and were hangin out. Thinkin back on it now it was a real feel good chapter in the book.
i love these 2 chapters because it really is the start of a new bella because of jacob. thier relationship grows and and its nice to get to know jacob more as he helps bella through this time. the song you guys chose for the chapters were great especially her comes the sun. i love the quotes.Im loving the new and improved book club.
I liked this chapter because it showed more of her life moving on, but that she was still affected from it.
I think it’s sad that her dreams are now just finding no one, because she doesn’t see him anymore.
I think if I had been in pain and trying to get over someone and we both made a promise but he didn’t keep his, I would reach that. The conclusion she comes to does actually make a lot of sense. Her thought process is not all over the place but fits how things are going.
I wouldn’t have changed anything.
You hear about the wolves from the campers, also I think you see what Jacob would do to spend time with Bella.
Quote
I really like the quote you have and for those reasons, but I also like this that goes along with it:
‘To be reckless in Forks would take a lot of creativity—maybe more than I had. But I wished I could find some way… I might feel better if I weren’t holding fast, all alone, to a broken pact.’
p.125
I think this also brings in more, plus it shows that, at least the way Bella saw it, that she was the one holding onto the love, they both weren’t split apart with both loving each other, for Bella she thought it was just her. So being reckless allowed her to also be more free.
Music
Chapter Five Song: She’s A Rebel by Green Day
I really like your description about this, because Bella is able grow and really discover more of herself. And this goes into Eclispe when Bella realizes that there is Jacob’s Bella and Edward’s Bella. Two different and yet the same. This is where it started.
Book To Movie
I was fine that they skipped over most of it. The didn’t have her at the Newtons, instead you hear stuff about the wolves here and there. Her going and saving the bikes and then bringing them to Jake really worked well. You can see how happy Jacob is and how he would be up for anything she suggests.
I thought they did a great job at this chapter in the movie, they showed the essentials and still was able to transition it.
I do love how they had Bella see Edward, that was really cool. I think they did a good job with that.
Chapter 6
I really liked this chapter. Even though it’s hard Bella is moving forward. She’s now a different person, and yet still very much the same.
Her dreams are quite interesting, but I think they work quite well.
Jacob doesn’t know the full extent because he doesn’t know how deep the feelings run that Bella has for Edward, but he does know that she is broken, so he’s ready to wait and help her heal. Bella could tell that he liked her, but she specified the ‘friends’ thing, but she couldn’t hurt him. Being in a relationship like that is hard, and she didn’t want to hurt him or loose him. She was being selfish and yet…he wouldn’t have let her leave, because he wanted her around.
I actually love how they’re not all forgiving and willing to bring her back into their lives. Mike and Angela are which make sense, and I love how easily they let her do it.
I wouldn’t have changed anything, it really was quite well done.
You see more of the wolves and this time someone she knows sees them. The age game comes up, so that’s quite cool.
Quote
Actually that would be the quote I choose. When reading the book the first time, it was completely depressing when Edward left, and then there was Jacob. I loved when he came, and he really was a sun. It does describe their friendship and it fits it perfectly.
Music
Great song choice, I think it fits the theme of the chapter quite well.
Book To Movie
They really did keep in this chapter in the movie. I love Quil and Embry showing up and teasing, and then having Bella stick up for Jake. It was cool and you could see their friendship. I love how they showed the time spent fixing the bikes with the song Shooting the Moon. I think it’s really good because the song is about not wanting to disappoint, and having to lie, and it’s about something really big, but going on with life type thing. I think it works quite well.
I love how the age game was put in, I loved that part in the book and I assumed it would be left out, so I was really pleased to discover that it was still in the movie. We don’t see them going out and shopping, but I like how they overlayed her writing E-Mails to Alice.
Showing her connecting with her friends again was really well done. I love how you see her enter the cafeteria and start for the Cullens table and then her hesistation before she changes and goes to her friends’ table. Her speaking up for Angela when Eric and Jessica are doubting Angela, shows hers’ and Angela’s connection. I love how Mike welcomes her back, that protein line is hilarious. And then him asking her out…followed by her making it a group thing. Jessica’s response was hilarious.
They did leave out the dinner at the Black’s house, and it was sad, but at the same time I think it did still keep true to the story.
I thought they did a great job at bringing this chapter to film.
Outtakes
I loved this outtake, just another example of how Edward still loved her, he was still looking out for her. I love Bella’s responses to it.
