TA TALKS BACK: A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A FANFICKER

Posted September 3rd, 2009 By: 8 Comments »

For those of us addicted to fan fiction, we know how all-consuming it can be. For this TA Talks Balk article, TAer katmom brings us “A Day in the Life of a Fanficker.”

A Day in the Life of a Fanficker By: Kathie

Ah…I just need to type one more sentence. I’ve got to get this train of thought down before it steams away. The idea came to me at 5:45 this morning and I just had to get up immediately to write it down.

My hubby, as he left for work this morning, asked what dinner was going to be. Let me see, I made pot roast on Sunday; ate leftovers on Monday AND Tuesday. The girls were at church on Wednesday so we had sandwiches and chips. Then I made homemade spaghetti on Thursday, which gave us another day of leftovers on Friday…

Dang, I guess I do need to cook again tonight. But I want to keep on typing…oh, and reading those three updates that I just received on my favorite stories!

Ugh…cooking and cleaning is really cutting in on my fan fiction writing/reading addiction…Hubby asked when it was going to be over? Um, never? That’s why I joined Twilighters Anonymous…I don’t want my addiction cured!

Is this you too? I’m pretty sure that I’m not the only one who reads a chapter (or three) THEN does that load of laundry…wait, was that the chime of an incoming e-mail? I’ll be back in a minute, got to go check it out…

I just finished giving Slinks, the ferret, a bath and watched him roll around in his sand and hay box like a lunatic. Heard the CHIME of an incoming e-mail, could it be another update? Sorry, Slinks, time to go back in your house!

Oh! It’s a new update from the very person that coined “Fanficker,” LJ Summers…got to read that for sure!

Ah, wolfpack love…now I can do that next load of laundry with a smile on my face. Embry and Bella…who knew that that pairing would be so lovely? I’ve got to find the time to respond to her latest update, to tell her how much I love that!

I’m definitely a Fanficker…I read, I respond and I write…addicted, that’s me in a nutshell!

My mind wanders into the Northern Expanses as I fold dish towels. Jasper and Cathair, his dragon, are telling me what they want to say next. Got to put these towels away and then sit back down to write their dialog before it gets away from me.

The roast is starting to smell good! That just might buy me a bit more computer time from my long suffering hubby. He loves a good pot roast…he knows why I made it for him and he rolls his eyes as he sees me poke the potatoes to see if they are done yet.

As much as he teases me, he does support my habit and has been known to ask, “Read anything good lately?” This is generally accompanied by his eyebrows wagging up and down. And then I roll my eyes! As long as I make *new* food every other day or so, and read good stories, hubby is happy too!

Oh, look! Kris’ Autumn Knights’ Dreams just updated! Let me see, I think that I can get the salad made after I finish that chapter, but hers are so long. I’ll have to read fast.

“Come on kids! Dinner is ready!” They need to hurry and eat because I have to edit that story for Missa…
It’s not nice that they won’t let me talk about Twilight at dinner anymore. It’s a good thing that I have my TA family to dish with!

We don’t even *know* each other, but we have certainly become friends. We share our days’ highs and lows, venting when we need to. We share laughter when it’s needed and hugs when warranted. It’s lovely to have them not laugh when I cry over a story. AND they are always there to dish over the details!

Of course, checking my stats page always makes me smile too. Look! Over 174,800 hits for GUARDING EDWARD! That tickles me no end. And all those lovely comments about how I’ve made someone smile when they read my story; lovely and heartwarming…

That makes all the leftovers and piles of laundry worth it, at least to me.

Yes, I don’t want this addiction to ever fade.

I bet you don’t either.

So, Twilight fans, what do you think? Do you read or write fan fiction yourself? Talk back to us…

That is sooo me too. hahahaha… I guess my daughter got tired of hearing me talk about the latest update of my favorites. only thing is that I’m too chicken to submit any of my stuff because all the great writers out there intimidate me.. **sigh** guess I’ll stick to the reading….. for now.

Awesome article Kathie! And don’t we know it’s the truth! lol

I never ever ever want it to end. :)

  • LJ Summers

    Rock on, Kathie!!!

I don’t have all the domestic concerns you do, but if I *DID* I imagine some of them would suffer periodically…

I am SO GLAD you’re a fanficker! You’re such an encouragement to me!!!

  • Kathie

Thanks, Ladies! Good to know that I’m in such good company! Fanfickers Unite! LOL

Valerie…go ahead and give it a try…it’s well worth it!

Hahaha, I have the SAME problem! Well, I suppose it’s not a problem from our points of view, haha.

This summer alone, I ended up reading over 500 fanfics – you know, the one with 100,000 to 500,000 words. Yeah, good times. –> I actually used to sleep around 3-4 AM because I couldn’t stop reading! I’ve already broken 3 laptops that fell off the bed when I fell asleep reading fics! Yikes!

It’s pretty pathetic (from an outsider’s POV) how obsessed I’ve become. I’ve already taken to transferring them to Word Docs, changing the fonts and sizes from Web to save space, then putting back all the spaces and italics – takes a while, but well worth it. Then, I “waste” a bunch of paper printing and binding them – Boycotts is almost 200 pages front and back alone!

Luckily, I’ve restricted myself from FanFiction and Twilighted until Sundays – then, my family knows they won’t see me until Monday. hehe.

Nice to know I’m not alone! =)

Lol i laughed at this! i can relate to this article… somewhat. I definitely READ fanfiction but dont write. but with checking my emails and going on TA, its just like “i just have to this- itll be really quick- and then ill stare revet my homework!” lol yes, this is life us twilighters have reverted to, but i definitely dont regret it!!!

Add in a part-time job that gets in the way of a full time addiction and yes, that’s me. I’d gotten tired of reading TS over and over (and over)again. Then I found out about fanfiction and I’ve been hooked ever since. Thank you so very much for “Guarding Edward”. That is one of my most favorite fanfiction stories. Please continue with literary creations.

oh imagine that! sounds just like me too, only add in a boss that comes charging down the rows periodically to check on me, lol. thanks kathie, great article honey!
