TA TALKS BACK: A YEAR AGO

Posted September 1st, 2009 By: 8 Comments »

Today I, TA Staffer Becky, remember the Midnight Sun leak and reflect on what Twilight has meant to me over the past year.

A Year Ago By: BeckyInPhilly

A year ago. Its been that long. It has been more then a year since I first picked up a copy of Twilight, joined a Twilight fansite, and since the Twilight fandom received heart breaking news. One thing we most wanted, most desired, aside from Edward Cullen himself, was taken away from us.

On August 28, 2008, Stephenie Meyer broke the news to the world that someone had taken the copy of the first 12 chapters she had written of her next book and posted them on the net without her permission. That book was to have been Midnight Sun, a retelling of the story of Twilight from the perspective of Edward, the brooding, beautiful vampire in love with Bella, the human girl, who he was attracted to from the moment he saw her.

Breaking Dawn had just been released and everyone wanted to talk about ending of the Saga and what would come next. Fans wanted to know what it was that Edward had been thinking during the beginning of his relationship with Bella. Meyer had already posted an unedited version of the first chapter as a taste for her fans. She used this first chapter and the others she had written to help her write Twilight. A copy of these chapters had been given to various people for critique and comment. Then rumors began to circulate. The chapters were online. Some fans searched for them, while others ran in the other direction. Whispers were heard all over the fandom.

Finally, Meyer had enough. With a statement on her website, she told the world that her work had been leaked by someone that had been trusted with it but refused to name the person. What had been seen only by a limited number of people was available for anyone to find and read though it was messy and unedited. She said she would post the pages on her site so her fans didn’t have to feel dishonest about reading the material. She declared,

“So where does this leave Midnight Sun? My first feeling was that there was no way to continue. Writing isn’t like math; in math, two plus two always equals four no matter what your mood is like. With writing, the way you feel changes everything. If I tried to write Midnight Sun now, in my current frame of mind, James would probably win and all the Cullens would die, which wouldn’t dovetail too well with the original story. In any case, I feel too sad about what has happened to continue working on Midnight Sun, and so it is on hold indefinitely.”

Fans were in shock. Why would someone do this?

I was personally devastated when I heard the news. It broke my heart. Once the chapters were posted, the fan base became divided. Some wanted to read them while others said no, not till Meyer publishes it the way she intended. Many fan sites showed their support for Meyer. Fans made graphics showing their love and people sent notes to her MySpace page and website. TA developed a letter writing campaign, asking all of its members to write notes of encouragement to Meyer. In my own note, I poured out my heart, telling anyone that cared to read it what Twilight had already begun to me (you can read my letter here).

Fast forward a year now.

I thought Twilight meant a lot to me then. It means even more to me now. It’s given me friends the world over that I’d never imagined Id ever know, virtually or otherwise, some of whom I even flew almost 1500 miles to be able to meet in real life. It gave me a new group of friends here at home that I’d have never connected with if I hadn’t read the books. The movie lead me to another group of friends and a band that I doubt Id have ever thought much about if they hadn’t had a Twilight connection. Some will laugh and joke, but I don’t care. It’s still true. Twilight changed my life.

As for Midnight Sun and Meyer’s decision?

I still support Stephenie Meyer 100%. It’s been a year. I still haven’t read any of the chapters she felt she had to post. Nor will I. Not until she publishes it the way she originally intended. I am a creative person and I understand what it’s like to have something you’ve poured yourself into taken and used in a way you never expected or wanted.

So, Twilight fans, what do you think? How have your thoughts on Midnight Sun changed in the past year? Talk back to us…

I still feel terrible for what happened to Midnight Sun, more specifically, Stephenie Meyer. I can just imagine how hurt she was. On the other hand, it has been a year now, and though she will remain hurt, sometimes it is best to just move on and let the hurt go. If she holds her grudge, she will never be the same, regardless if she publishes Midnight Sun or not. I do wish she would try to put her heart in it again, not just for my own selfish purposes (to read it!), but it will help her move past the hurt. I think in the end she would find peace in completing the project. If I were her, I would not let what someone else has done, change the course of my intended path. She’s Stephanie, and Midnight Sun is hers. The world knows that and supports her 100% with love.

I and several others on TA made a commitment that day that we would not read Midnight Sun until Stephenie Meyer finished it and it was available for purchase the legal way. I have stood by my commitment and have not read the online version that was circulated or the one she posted on her website.

I feel certain that one day she’ll finish it and I’ll enjoy it on my sofa curled up at 2am!

I’m still really upset that Midnight Sun is on indefinite hiatus. I hope that one day I will get to read it, and I can put it on my shelf next to Twilight. I like the other books in the saga, but Twilight will always be the most exciting to me, and I really hope one day I can read it from Edwards perspective! I think after all the movies come out would be the best time for Midnight Sun to be published, as all the fans are going to be really bummed out that all the movies are finished and it would be the pick me up we will all need!

I heard about the leak before I even started reading the books. I guess I’m a Twilight Saga noob :/

Becky, I enjoyed reading your “A Year Later” and the letter you wrote. I did not know it had been leaked until after I read Midnight Sun. I did not see Twilight until Dec. 08 and knew nothing about the saga. I have been totally obsessed since seeing the movie for the first time. I have given up counting how many times I have seen the DVD and read all 4 books countless times. I pray Stephenie is moved to finish Midnight Sun. I would purchase it. It has brought me and my two daughters even closer. It moves me on so many levels. I discovered TA in April and I am totally obsessed with this site. It is my ONLY online connection.

    Wow Becks,
This made me tear up a bit. The part of the friendships that you’ve found, remembering writing the letters, and also remembering everything that we’ve been through since I met you on here over a year ago…You’ve been there for me through a lot, and I’ve tried to be there for you as much as I could.

Wow. One year. A whole darn year. It seems so much longer than that that i first read twilight. It will be a year in over a month since i joined TA, but it seems so much longer to me. I cant begin to remember what i did and talked about before Twilight, and I cannot imagine my life without it. Truly, the Twilight Saga changed my life! :D

I was horrified about the theft and illegal posting of Midnight Sun. I started reading the Twilight books a little over a year ago, too and it has also changed my life. I am waiting on pin and needles for Stephenie to come around and finish the book, but I completely understand how betrayed she feels by the situation. It really irks me that the loyal, respectful fans have to suffer because of the psychotic, impatient, greedy people that didn’t consider Stephenie’s creative rights.

I hope that it does come out so that we can all enjoy the story as it was intended.
