TA TALKS BACK: DISSECTING DAVID SLADE, THE DIRECTOR OF ECLIPSE (MOVIE)

Posted April 30th, 2009 By: 7 Comments »

TA Staff member MiniJazz breaks down David Slade’s (chosen director for Eclipse movie) life and career for us:

Who is David Slade?

David Slade was born September 26th, 1969 in the UK. He started his film career by making music videos. David Slade has made videos for Aphex Twin, Rob Dougan, System of a Down, Stone Temple Pilots, Tori Amos, Muse and AFI.

As for movies, David Slade has directed “30 Days of Night“, “ Hard Candy“, and “Do Geese See God” David won two awards for the movie Hard Candy. The Audience Award and Best Film Award. He has also written and created a movie called “Meat Dog: What’s fer Dinner”

Although other vampire movies have nothing to do with “Twilight“, “30 Days of Night” allots David some experience in vampire movies. I know that many may not think that this does not give him any credit or anything but at least David will know what he is getting into with the CGI and making vampires be vampires.

Now some must be wondering “Why did Summit choose David Slade?” Since I am not Summit Entertainment I cannot give you a definite answer to this, but this statement may give you a bit of an answer.

“I am thrilled that David Slade will be directing Eclipse,” Erik Feig, Summit’s president of production, said in a statement. “He’s a visionary filmmaker who has so much to offer this franchise. From the beginning, we’ve been blessed with wonderful directorial talent for the Twilight Saga, and I’m so happy that Eclipse will be carrying on with that tradition.”

I think that David Slade is a good choice for a director in the Twilight Saga. I think that he has experience that the Saga can use. I believe that David will make Eclipse all the movie it can be. I am speaking from the experience. I have seen in “30 Days of Night”, but in my opinion I thought it was a good movie and it was directed well.

The CGI is always something I am worried about for the Twilight Saga but with the CGI that was used in 30 Days of Night I am confident that there will be no problem in Eclipse. I think David Slade will make a great addition to the Twilight Saga. I guess we will all just have to wait and see what comes out in July 2010.

I’m sure he will do a fine job. The CGI is certainly a BIG factor in the Twilight Saga movies. I’m not so concerned with who they pick anymore as much as I am with what type of budget Summit is going to allow for the production of these movies. No matter how much experience any one director has, if the the money isn’t there, then it’s tough to come up with something believable.

omg i did not know that he’s british. i’m from the UK too, this is awesome. i’ll get back to reading it now lol

earlier I looked up teh actuall special affects company that is working on the movie. they are called “tippett studio”. they have done a host of stuff that has been great.(Xmen: Origins Wolverine, Enchanted, Ghostbusters, Matrix Revolutions, The shaggy Dog) they have won, acaedemy awards for: hollow man, willow, jurassic park, return of the jedi

I think our wolves are pretty safe.

While David Slade might have experience with CGI and vampires, I am very concerned that we will lose the essential love story/triangle that is Eclipse in the midst of all the action that takes place. What I love about Eclipse is the development of Bella and Edward’s relationship. They make compromises and grow together. And then the whole Jacob situation just adds to that romantic tension and intensity. The final battle sequence is, of course, important. But I do not want the potential horror of the movie to overshadow the beautiful love story that is taking place. And I’m very much afraid that Slade’s experience is going to push him more towards emphasizing the action as opposed to that love story. Please David Slade, prove me wrong!

I think he’ll do a good job with the vampire action part of Eclipse, but I’m VERY worried about how he’ll work with the romantic aspects. Like, I’ve never seen 30 Days of Night, but everybody says it’s really scary. So I don’t know…I just hope he still does a good job with the entire thing and not just the crazy fight scenes.

In my opinion, Eclipse was romantic and full of sizzeling sexy parts, but I’m more concerned for the darker side of it. Edward may be back in Eclipse and everyone can breath again, but I want to see the new borns ravishing Seattle. I want to see the darker side of Eclipse. I loved the lighting and coloring of Twilight. You felt cold just watching it. We need to feel the thrill of fear and goosebumps, and Bella dangeling like bate.

I cant wait to see the Graduation scene. Thats always been one of my favorie scenes to read. Edwards reaction to Bellas epiphany and Alice thinking the Battle Hymn of Republic in Korean sign language just to keep Edward out. LOL! Love that scene.

First of all, I just hafta say how proud I am of my dear friend “MiniJazz” for getting her article on here!!! Go Jbird!!!

Now on to my thoughts: I have read SO many comments from people who were freaked out when Chris Weitz was picked because “he’s never done this kind of movie! He’s a boy! How can he relate to Bella?!?!” and now I’m reading people’s freak-outs over David Slade because of his two previous films being very different from what “Eclipse” will be. I guess people forget that directors quite often make movies that are radically different from each other. Look at Steven Spielberg. He’s done everything from “Jaws” and “Jurassic Park” to “Schindler’s List” and “Saving Private Ryan”. I don’t think man-eating sharks and real-life dinosaurs have too much in common with the Holocaust or WWII, but all 4 movies are huge hits and critically acclaimed. A director is an artist, the same as a writer or actor or sculptor. Just because David Slade has done a horror movie doesn’t mean he’s going to turn “Eclipse” into a frightfest. I promise you, Summit knows what they are doing. They understand how important it is to get these movies JUST right. They know the fans will tar and feather them if they mess up. Plus, Stephenie Meyer gave her thumbs-up to Slade. If she says it’s okay, then it’s okay. This story wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for her, and she knows it better than anyone else on the planet and she knows what needs to be in the movie. Breathe. Relax. Have a little faith. :o )
