TA TALKS BACK: DO TWILIGHT FANS REALLY LOVE ROBERT PATTINSON?

Posted April 16th, 2009 By: 34 Comments »

Ta fan edelacruz wonders if we’re in love with Edward or Rob Pattinson:

Do Twilight fans really love Robert Pattinson?

We’ve all heard Rob say it in interviews time and time again: “The fans are in love with Edward, not me.” Rob is playing a fictional character – Edward Cullen, who is arguably this generation’s “Romeo”. And what’s not to love about Edward? He’s intelligent, gorgeous, mysterious, chivalrous, caring, and has that dangerous edge that would make any girl’s heart skip a beat. It’s a given: we all love Edward…for many wonderful reasons. But are the screaming and hysterically emotional masses transferring all that passionate wanting towards the mortal man that plays this “perfect guy”? In other words, do many Twilight Fans love Robert Pattinson only because they associate him with Edward Cullen?
Some people honestly have admitted not making the distinction between Robert and Edward. I’ve seen many people in chat rooms and blogs interchange Rob’s name when they mean to say Edward. Not that I blame them for making a mistake like that. It can be a daunting task to force yourself to separate the truth from the fantasy, especially when thinking of Rob’s performance in Twilight. Rob personified Edward Cullen so completely that he made the audience forget he was acting. We forgot that Rob is actually British and that he was once Cedric Diggory in the Harry Potter movies. But when the Twilight cameras stopped rolling, did people forget that Rob was an actor playing a role?

We’ve seen this kind of thing before. Daniel Radcliffe may never shake the character of Harry Potter, regardless of how many shows he does of Equus in New York or how many other films he does in his career. Rob has already made several films and has made it very clear that he does not want to get typecast or associated with any one genre of film. He constantly reminds us that the character of Edward was so difficult to play because he’s written as being “perfect”. Twilight may have catapulted Rob into the stratosphere of fame, but he’s still a person. He’s a shy, introvert who happens to love acting, but shuns the never-ending publicity and non-existent privacy that comes with it. Are fans making Rob’s life impossibly stressful because many of them won’t allow him to shake the character of Edward Cullen? Will that change once the last film is made?

So…do you think that most Twilight Fans love Rob or Rob as Edward?

I think this article hits the nail on the head in many ways. I, too, have seen posters interchange Rob when they are referring to the character, Edward. This phenomena makes me worry that too many fans are projecting their desires for perfection not only on Rob, but will eventually transfer that desire to the men in their day to day lives. The fact remains Twilight is not reality and shouldn’t be a model for real life love. I hope Rob’s fame continues to rise because he truly is a talented actor, but I more so hope the madness that surrounds him currently dies soon. I also hope that as the younger fan base grows up, they realize Edward is not real and to compare men to him is not only a set up for failure, but it is unfair to men in general.

  • Robin

Although I thought he gave I strong performance in Twilight I’ve developed more respect for Rob as an actor since then based on his range and ability. I look forward to the edginess in his role in Little Ashes (and I know it will be uncomfortable but acting is moving beyond your comfort zone) and am anxious to see How to Be. I also love his honesty and self-depracation in interviews. Hope he stays humble in that way. I love his natural voice far more than Edward’s inflection but I also remain “Team Edward.”

  • creamy

I think it is both. When you are watching Rob-as-Edward on the screen, you are already disposed to love him. I do not believe, even with all the Team Jacob people, that Edward isn’t universally loved. Who cares if he drinks blood, right? (a small matter). To have Rob bring this icon-of-romance to life in such a way as to make you forget you are actually watching Rob, well the love is bound to flow. As in a flood. No, make that a tsunami. There is no stopping it. That is what acting is about. Getting into the character and having the audience BELIEVE!

Now, back to real life. When I see events on TV, such as movie premieres where the crowds are screaming like maniacs, waving arms, photos, posters, etc, I don’t think they believe they are doing this for Edward. When they stand next to Rob on the street and have a photo with him, do they know it is Rob? Of course they do. That doesn’t lessen the love, or more accurately, adoration they feel. Not only are they appreciative of his efforts to create an Edward we can see, (not just in our minds), but let’s be honest, Rob is extremely attractive in his own right. Sure, we know he was Cedric, but he brought Edward to LIFE! He could do this because he, Rob Pattinson, has the heart and passion we all know Edward has. Of course talent is in there too.

So, I hope Rob will feel the attention is the reward he is reaping for his work. I sincerely hope it isn’t so overwhelming that he disappears!
    Banish the thought!

  • elisa

While I think that Rob brought Edward to life,I was a fan of Rob’s before I was a fan of Edwards. So I am able to separate the two. What I love about Rob is that he’s “real”; in the sense that he’s talented on so many levels. He has a great sense of humor, he’s humble, but honest,he’s what I affectionatly refer to him as “adorkable”. I’ve seen all of his movies, and herd his music. I enjoy watching all of his interviews over and over. I would love to meet him someday. I love Edward too but for many different reasons. He’s not Rob, and Rob’s not him, other than on screen.

  • julie

Well..it is a very good topic..Fisrt, when i read the book, of course i was in love with Edward. What is not to love ?:) Than (and it was just a week before movie came out)i i watched all the trailers and i thought this guy is not Edward..
But,somehow i managed to understand that Edward is fictional character, he is not real, no matter how we all want him to exist!
So i spend days watching interviews with Rob. And i saw how nice, sweet and shy this guy is..You might pretend to be something you are not once or twice, but he is so real and he has same shyness and sweetness in all his interviews..
For me now Rob is Rob, not Edward. And i really, really like the guy. I wish him all the best!!1

  • Susan

Honestly I think most people love both Edward and Robert as two separate entities.

  • Janice

Well personally i must say that the caracter that Robert Pattinson plays is exquisite, he (Edward Cullen) is the definition of perfect in a man except for the marble skin and the vampire status besides that Edward is perfect in every girl’s mind. I personally love Rob as edward but i really love Rob being Rob! He is such a charismatic, fun, funny, intelligent, simple, humble and wether you believe it or not he is in some way misterious! He has a smile that could brighten the whole world and the eyes to light up the sky at night. But we can only see of robert what he wants us to see because all of us don’t know him personally as much as we would like (at least me, I would love to get to know Rob without the Edward character). There is so much more to Robert Pattinson than just the characterof Edward Cullen. That’s how I see it!

  • Caitlin

I’d definitely have to agree with Rob on this point: The fans love Edward the character. I mean, I’ve heard people call him Edward instead of his real name. Surely, Rob is incredibly good looking, but, he doesn’t share the same qualities as the character he plays. He is his own person.

Most fans can’t seem to differentiate between who the real Rob Pattinson is and the character he plays. Which, is quite sad, because, he’s got a strong personality, and, he seems as authentic and honest as any person (or actor) could be, given his circumstance.

I feel bad for him; He can’t do the normal day-to-day activities without being recognized by screaming hormonal teenage girls. How would you feel if you were in his position? You wouldn’t be able to hang out with your friends in a public venue, you wouldn’t be able to take a walk down the street, or even go to the mall without recognition–It would completely disrupt your life. You would have absolutely no privacy all because you play a character everyone loves.

If I were him, I’d need therapy, or, perhaps, a shoulder to cry on.

  • Sophie

I think it’s important that Rob is recognised as a person and not just the Edward we all know and love. I agree completely with your viewpoint and think that many of us Twilighters sometimes do forget to distinguish between the two and Rob has himself said that he is nothing like Edward. Personally, as much as I love movie Edward, I love BOOK Edward too and have loved Rob in his other acting roles; especially the Bad Mother’s Handbook and Harry Potter. Whilst I think he is forever going to have that fanbase that see him as Edward and Edward only, fans will also mature and hopefully follow his future roles with as much anticipation as the Twilight Saga. Because at the end of the day; he’s an actor and as his fans, surely the buck cannot stop with just Twilight?

  • Melissa

I love both. Rob as Edward was good (not what I picture, but I DID enjoy it), Rob as Cedric was better, but Rob as a real person is awesome. I have a fascination for all musicians, and I admire anyone who has the discipline to be a star in today’s world (diet/training requirements, weird schedules, stalkerazzi, etc. . .). It is somewhat disturbing how stars are literally eaten alive and then spit out for the next fresh face. I would love to meet him (right, in my dreams), but given how distressed his fans seem to make him, I will always admire him from afar.

  • ShellK

I can’t say how other fans feel, but I can tell you how I feel. I didn’t know anything about Twilight & Rob until I seen the movie with my daughter. Yes I’m a 30 year old mother and wife. I’m a movie fanatic & have thought some actors were cute, but the way Rob played Edward was like nothing I’ve ever seen. He had me in AWWW the entire movie I was sitting in my seat snickering like a teenager by the end. I seen the movie 4 times in theaters & countless times on video. I ran out of the theater immediately after & bought the rest of the saga it was over from there. Edward Cullen in Twilight is the best male character, but to me he’s the best because Robert Pattinson did such a great job at bringing him to life. It’s Rob’s beautiful smile that got me. I am 199% a Robert Pattinson fan & will be always even when the Twilight films are finished. At first it was just his good looks & smile that had me. Now I’ve realized that there’s so much more to Robert Pattinson besides being an extraordinary actor, he’s a beautiful soulful singer, fabulous piano player, & a great guitar player. He’s a funny, humble, gorgeous person & as far as I’ve seen a good guy. I will watch and listen to everything he makes because he’s a truly GREAT artist! Should be interesting to see what extremely lucky woman catches his heart!

  • Melissa

    Maybe the third time’s a charm. . .

I love both. I loved Rob as Cedric way before I ever knew Twilight existed. Rob as Edward was great, but not what I picture in my head. Still, given how “impossible” he thought the role was, I think he brought a lot of life and emotion to Edward. Rob as Rob – a talented young man/musician just starting out and learning about himself while dealing with a hectic schedule and insane fans is absolutely awesome. THAT’S the person I would love to meet. Sadly, that’s more of a fantasy that Edward is. I wish you peace, Rob. You really seem to need it.

I Actually Do Not Like Rob As A Person.
    He Seems Rude And Arrogant.
Maybe It Is Because He Shuns The Publicity Of Acting, But I’m Completely Turned Off By Rob.
The Only Time I Love Him Is When He Is Played The Role Of Edward,
Because He Is A Brilliant Actor, As Far As Playing The Perfect Male Role.
    I’m Very Happy Of That.

But I Have Absolutely No Problem Seeing The Difference Of The Two.
Rob Is One Actor To Me, And Edward Is Just… Well… Perfect.
    Duhr. =]

Umm…I don’t know what everyone else likes, but, I totally ♥ Edward Cullen, but I ♥ Robert Pattinson even MORE!!!!!! I mean look at him he is fine!! lol, and have you heard his accent. WHEW!!!
Rob is an actor And I totally ♥ him!!!
Edward is fictional and I totally ♥ him, too.

    I don’t know.

  • Nikki

An article I can appriciate. I’ll be the first to testify, that I LOVE ROB!!!! I do however love Edward as a character. Stephenie did a fantastic job creating the depth and emotion that is Edward. But honestly, Rob is who i’m interested in. I think he is a fantastic actor, a very charming individual and extremely talented. I have to disagree with Haylee’s comment. I think he’s actually the complete opposite. Every interview I have ever seen with him (and trust me it’s alot LOL), he’s extremely accomidating by answering the same questions over and over, with a smile on his face. He’s always laughing and joking about himself which to me shows a very strong character. And i’m sorry but if I was in his position, i’d be shunning the stupid paparrazzi sometimes too. I mean he does deserve privacy. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I think Rob is amazing. And I just loves him to pieces!!!

  • cullen-lover

I can only speak for myself and I can say that I LOVE ROB and EDWARD. And I don’t have any problems whatsoever separating them, because once you come to accept that EDWARD is just a character of fiction (even if it hurts my heart) IT WILL BE EASY. They are both DIFFERENT PERSONS and they HAVE DIFFERENT CHARACTERS.

ROB is a talented actor I have love him even before TWILIGHT and I have LOVE HIM EVEN MORE now because he is a HUMBLE GUY who doesn’t like publicity, has a sense of humor and doesn’t let fame get on his head. That’s why I REALLY LOVE HIM aside from the fact that he’s playing the role of the VAMPIRE WHO STOLE MY HEART=)

  • Krystal

    I loved Edward first….but Rob most. :)

  • Midori

I agree with many points made by the artcle and many points made by others. I think the fans love a little bit of Rob and Edward and the same time. Rob is a very talented actor who brought Edward to life. Edward the vampire, who found his true love in Bella. He made the audience fall in love with him, as he made Bella fall for him. However, Rob is a different person, separate from Edward. He is quite charming, polite and handsome. He is somewhat shy and highly intelligent. Easy to understand why teenage girls and young women to turn butter when they see him. Rob is such a humble guy, who doesn’t relish the spotlight. I can see what a struggle it has been for him to deal with the screaming fans. Through all this, he has never been less than a gentlemen. Perhaps, that is one of the reasons why he is so loved by his fans. Personally, I adore Rob, will be a fan even after Twilight.

  • just megan

I like them both. Edward because who wouldn’t want that? Minus the stalking part but other than that…heck yeah! And he comes with super speed and strength. Robert for his laid back personality. He seems to be quite the charmer without even trying to be.

  • hotwhls

I totally agree with Nikki! I really love the movie! I totally raised my expectations for men after seeing how the character of Edward treats Bella and is so protective of her and how much he loves her. However, I can totally separate the two. It’s ALL about Rob for me. He is perfect in his own imperfect way and I love that, because he is just so human. There is just something magical about him that I can’t explain. Yet he is also so messy and goofy at times too. He’s this unexplainable cross between a Greek God and your brother’s best friend that you can totally hang out with. I love him! Rob, if you’re reading this, it ain’t about Edward babe, ok! LOL! Sparkly, romantic vampires are nice and all, but at the end of the day, I’d rather have someone that makes me laugh and doesn’t care whether or not I shower because they don’t either. We love you, Rob!

  • Marie

This aritcle brings forth the issue I was thinking about. My thing is that I am a MAJOR Team Jacob for the book, but I just LOVE Robert Pattinson in the movie, more than Taylor Lautner[even though he is totally awesome, too]. People always say that the actor and the character are the same, but they are not in reality; it’s the role they play.

  • Shirley

I agree that many people DO indeed love Rob just cos he seems to them like a real life Edward Cullen. But there are many people who like him for who he is as a person, not just because he’s hot or because he’s technically Edward. Rob acts, he can play the guitar and the piano and he can sing. He’s just basically, crazy talented. I’m a 14 year old and I definatly love Edward AND Rob. I really look up to him. I act, I play the guitar and the piano, and I sing. All these things I love are the things he’s best at. He’s just a really genuine person. He doesn’t care what people say or think about him and it’s not very often that you find this kind of people anymore.

    - End of rant –
    :)

Do Twilight Fans really Love Robert Pattinson?
    I say” Yes” I know I do!!!
First of all we fell in love with “Edward Cullen” when we read the books, yes, no doubt, but then the character that we fell in love with stepped out of the book and onto the screen and “wow” we were hooked. Rob is totally gorgeous obviously, but he did such a wonderful, amazing, fantastic job bringing Edward to life, that “of course” we could be forgiven to love him just as Edward, but I know better than that. We love Rob for Rob and the person he is..that’s for sure. Since Twilight I have been finding out everything I can about Rob like, apart from Harry Potter, what other movies had he been in etc .. For example I did not know he is brilliant musician and fantastic piano player, now I know , I have also seen Trailers for Little Ashes, The Summer House, How to be, The Haunted Airman, I am blown away by what a great actor Rob is , by god, he really gets into the characters he is playing, I cannot wait to see them all and everything else he will be doing in the future , I honestly don’t think he will just be loved and only accosiated with” Edward Cullen” . I really don’t. Leonardo Di Caprio is not only loved and remembered for Jack Dawson on Titanic, remember that hype around Leo back then all the girls, women (including me) fell in love, and Leo has done great Movie’s since then. Now back to Rob, when you see him in all the interviews (and please watch them again) Rob is very humble about being ( now )so famous that he gets screamed at everywhere he goes, he is actually, very shy,( watch the body language) he also has a great sense of humour, he is down to earth. Rob is new to Hollywood and that alone would be scary, to be scrutinised with everything he does or says. I know he said” The Fans love Edward not him, but I say, no Rob, “We love you…”
Rob if you happen to read this (wishful thinking on my part) I have a “TEAM PATTINSON” T-shirt as well as “Team Edward” 

  • Hetti Plaiter

Every since harry potter Ive loved robert.p.
The first thing i noticed about rob was his Beautiful blue eyes and dashing smile. And from watching his interviews his accent has blown me away
i live in portsmouth…not far from london and i’d love to meet him and get to know the really rob not hes characters.

If your reading this rob Dont be afraid to be who you are even if most people like you characters more than the real you. i love the real you and i would change a thing.

    love H.m.p xoxo

  • Ruby

I definately distinguish between the two. I loved Rob when he was Harry Potter, i remember me and a friend arguing over who was cuter ‘Krum’ or ‘Cedric’. I won oviously. I loved Edward becasue of the obvious reasons. When i heard Rob was playing Edward, i was ecstatic. Sadly when the film came out i was disappointed, i most certainly do not love Rob for being Edward. I love Rob for the guy that he is normally, not for the wooden role he has portrayed in the film adaptation of my favourite book Twilight. I actually don’t blame him, i blame the people who wrote the script, with all the awkward silences and pointless scenes. I still love Rob and hope that the sequal will put more hope in me for the rest of the films…

    Rxxx

  • Sue

I’ve thought about this subject before and I am definitely in love with Edward Cullen. There is no confusion for me between the actor and the fictional character. I read the books before seeing the movie and I fell for Edward before I even knew who Rob was!
Needless to say…I don’t think anyone else could have played Edward as well as Rob and I was in no way disappointed to see Edward come to life on the screen through him. He was just as I imagined Edward would be. Spot on.
BUT! He is NOT Edward. He is an actor and he is human, so I hope no one expects him to be anything more. (yuk, he smokes! Edward would never smoke! ha!) Anyway, I won’t deny that Rob is hot, but I prefer him in character. (That hair!! the pale makeup…that grey coat, that tortured look….I even like the lipstick! ha!)
    SIGH……

  • Sasa (crazyaboutcullens)

You have a point, however I definately love Robert Pattinson because he IS Robert Pattinson.
I love Edward, he is everything I imagine in a perfect guy and I love the way Robert potrayed him. Let’s face it he WAS Edward- so I can see why people get confused and why he’s constantly referred to as Edward Cullen. However, after watching Twilight I watched re-watched Harry Potter and fell in love with him there. And I watched the dvd with the audio commentary and as soon as he said “What’s Vitamin R?” I swooned at his voice, laughed at his jokes etc. So I can tell the difference. Also I bought a magazine called Bliss (teen magazine in the UK) and it was showing Rob when he was 17 and was a model for there magazine! I realised I recognised the picture because I had it on my wall once apon a time! How odd huh? I guess I was always destined to love Robert Pattinson… and Edward Cullen!

  • Kristine

Let me tell ya….Rob is amazing. I think he’s an amazing actor who happens to be adorable as well. I always pick up on mannerisms and I love to watch Rob. I can’t find a thing about him that isn’t gorgeous. When he smiles, his whole face smiles. He comes off as shy, and simple, and down to earth…which makes him evem more appealing. Top that with a sexy British accent…and WOW! Even though I hadn’t read Twilight, I thought Rob was a bad choice for the role of a vampire(my daughter was obsessed with the series)…I remember saying…”oh my God…its Cedric Diggory!”. But WOW. Again. WOW! What an amazing surprise. No one else could have pulled this off like Rob has. It truly shows his talent and after watching trailers of “Little Ashes” and “How To Be”, I am convinced this guy should have been discovered ions ago. Rob is just too darned irresistible!

  • Rob

I love both of them but i think most of the twilight fans loves Robert Pattinson :)

  • BethTwiliHeidi

I, too, have seen the interchange of Edward to Rob. However, as much as other people love Edward and not Rob, I disagree because, in my eyes, they are both people to idolize.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was when I first noticed Rob, no matter how small a part he played. In fact, Cedric Diggory wasn’t a small part. But, I have to say, Rob’s acting potential wasn’t noticed until then. The fact that he plays Edward Cullen, who I have fallen head over heels in love with over and over again, is just an added plus on his profile!
There are many out there who either love Rob’s casual Edward Cullen hair do, and there is those who love his curls the most. I care for both the actor and his role. *end of discussion on my part* =P

  • Amy

    I think both as well.

Before we got to know Rob through Twilight Tuesday and the mass of interviews of him, I loved Edward, and just thought Rob was the hottest guy I’ve ever seen. Twilight Tuesdays and interviews etc. I started to love Rob for himself. In so many ways, he is unlike Edward that I, personally, don’t see how people can get confused between the two. However Rob and Edward do have some similarities as well. I think we get the best of both worlds with Rob – he’s like Edward but he’s also NOT (his sense of humour for example). When I see him in full twilight costume, I see Edward. When I see him offscreen with his messy hair and his stubble, I see Rob. I love them both and to be honest, I don’t think I can choose between them anymore. They’re just both so amazing. I also love all the characters he portrays in all his different roles. I love him as an actor, as a person, as a singer, as a character (like Cedric Diggory – didn’t really have an opinion of him in the book but on film I loved him) and as Edward.

    xXx

  • Sarah

The majority of Twi-hard fans ARE Edward fans also. I personally LOVE Rob and Edward but the majority only love him for Edward. However, Rob ISN’T Edward and will never be Edward but is still completely gorgeous and irresistable!

  • Vronicha Mutea

This article hits the spot. All the screaming fans out there are in love with Edward not Robert. Poor guy has been through enough and I wish they would leave him alone with all the rumors about him and Kristin. I never met the guy and I don’t want to. I rather see him just in movies than anything else. I don’t understand why when the fans see him, they cry like they are going to die. Hello people out there, its not Edward. Edward is just a character, he doesn’t exist. Sure he’s every woman’s dream man but he’s just a fantasy. Robert Pattinson is a human being as it says up in the article. So please all you fans out there, see him as who he really is. ROBERT PATTINSON. NOT EDWARD CULLEN.

So if Robert Pattinson himself decides to reads this I just like to say as you can see I’m not one of those crazy screaming fans so don’t worry. I think you are a very good actor and you played Edward Cullen very well. I love your music, especially Let Me Sign and I hope someday it will be on a cd in the stores so I can buy it. I feel sorry that you have no privacy and I wish people would leave you alone. I wish they would stop making a big fuss about your hair and your hygiene. I find that is nobody’s business but yours. The rumors about that is ridiculous and mean and must stop. May God bless you with the movies you make and good luck with winning awards. I wish you all the best in your real life and I hope someday you will find your dream woman who will love, see and accept you for you. As a real person, that is all I would like to say.

  • bindy

i dont love the guy because i dont know him
but i do like robert for who he is not because he played a charactor in the movie
i want to get to know the real person not because he plays edward in twilight
