TA TALKS BACK: ENJOYING NEW MOON

TA Fan Candice talks about the different insights New Moon gives you after reading it a couple of times.

Enjoying New Moon by Candice Shaw

There are many reasons to enjoy reading New Moon. We get to really know Jacob, and we witness Bella mature into a smart young woman. However, for a lot of readers, New Moon is the saddest and most heartbreaking book of the series. It was hard for me to get through the book the first time I read it, but after reading it a second time, I understood that it was necessary for Bella to go through this heartbreak and this part of life in order to maker her the woman she becomes in Breaking Dawn. There are a lot of quotes and events in the beginning of New Moon that foreshadow what is going to happen on that September 16th day; only 3 days after Bella’s 18th birthday. I’ve listed the one’s that stand out to me the most:

1.) Alice is talking to Bella about the party and says, “What’s the worst that could happen?” Wow.
2.) Bella mentions how Edward’s kiss reminds her of the time he kissed her goodbye when he left to try and throw James off Bella’s trail.
3.) “A change is coming. I could feel it.” This thought by Bella really stands out to me.
4.) Bella mentions many times that Edward’s face is “still wrong.”

After reading New Moon, I began thinking about how things would have been different had Bella never went to the Cullen’s house that horrific birthday. She tried many times to get out of going by claiming she needed to watch Romeo and Juliet, saying that she had to work (even though Alice took care of that for her), and even by hoping that Charlie would not let her go out. It was as if the situation was completely inevitable. What do you think? How would this have changed everything about Bella, Edward and even Jacob, if anything?

I found New Moon so traumatic. I have re-read it twice. The first time I skipped the break up but managed to read it all the third time! Don’t know if I’ll pick it up again though.

I think you a right Candice it was inevitable that Edward would have to leave sometime believing he was protecting her, to realise that he could not live without Bella. And similarly Bella through her the fact that she could not live a compele life without him knows that she will always truly love him and all this confirms the decision she made at the end of Twilight. She wants Edward this means becoming a vampire, end of.

On a truly personal note though I wish he had never left her. And a small part of me also wishes she could have stayed human and somehow stayed with Edward too!

Yeah New Moon was hard for me to read! I swear that my chest really ached when I read him saying those things! I was mad that Edward left but I understand why he did it and I try to think about how hard it was on him too! If he hadn’t left Bella wouldn’t be the strong person she became and she probably wouldn’t be so close with Jacob and I like her friendship with Jacob…..so I wouldn’t change a thing!

The first time I read “New Moon” I kinda sped through it looking for Edward. The second time, I knew how it ended, and that Edward does indeed show up, but I still hated the middle part where he was gone. It took me til my third time reading it to really be able to appreciate Jacob and to be able to understand that Edward had to leave at some point, otherwise he would ALWAYS be questioning whether him being with Bella was the best thing for her. It took them both being in such turmoil and agony apart from each other for Edward to really see how much Bella not only loved him, but wanted and needed him as much as he wanted and needed her. I have read NM 4 times now, and really do love it just as much as the other 3 books in the saga. It’s not painful for me anymore, and I love Jacob’s character and what he does for Bella when she’s all broken and alone. I am very much looking forward to seeing the movie, though I am pretty sure I will cry when Edward leaves, at least the first time I see it, LOL!
