TA TALKS BACK: FAN REVIEW OF THE ‘NEW MOON’ SOUNDTRACK
TAer Jenn gives us her thoughts on the newly released soundtrack for the upcoming New Moon movie.
Any Twi-hard will tell you Bella goes to pieces when Edward leaves her in “New Moon,” the follow-up to the blockbuster “Twilight.” Kristen Stewart herself has apeared in countless articles, describing her character as suffering manic depression at the loss of her boyfriend. But for all the depressing scenes and heartache, there’s also some great action in the book and (from what I’ve seen) the new movie coming out Nov. 20. Why then, should the latest soundtrack be so bogged down? Sure the first couple of tracks - Death Cab for Cutie and Band of Skulls - has an edgy pop feel, but many of the remaining tracks are dull, lifeless and leave you feeling abandoned by whoever put this together.
We’ve got some top names on this album. I expected the Thom Yorke tune to be introspective, but the rest trudges along, leaving the entire album with a pace akin to slogging through mud. Where’s the crazy-paced song to set the mood as Bella races across the Piazza dei Priori to save Edward? I know the film also will have an accompanying score and, from the sound of “New Moon” (The Meadow), I’m optimistic, but I guess I just expected more.

As a standalone CD, I like the included music just fine.
I’m going to reserve judgement on the soundtrack as it represents the movie until I hear the songs as placed. They will probably make good sense. I also sense that, as with most soundtrack music except for those in the credits, most of the songs will be nothing more than background music and barely more than musical blips in the movie.
I still don’t like the Perry song on the Twilight soundtrack, but as placed at the prom scene it wasn’t as out of place as I thought it would be in any part of the movie as when I first heard it.
I totally agree…when i read the book, i imagine pink, kelly clarkson, hana pestle, within temptations, chiodos…artists like that…the soundtrack for new moon was nothing like i imagined, and i have no idea how any of this is going to work with the soundtrack…my guess is whoever put the soundtrack together never actually had there heart shattered, because if they did these songs never would have made it. I’m so happy i didn’t buy the soundtrack because then I’d be kicking myself. They could have done way better. They also didn’t need all original music, that idea was stupid. The first soundtrack was amazing, this one just didn’t make it.
I too am going to reserve final judgement until I see the music paired with the film.
Although the more I listen to the CD the more I like it. There are a few on there I’m still not too sure about, but as a whole I do find myself liking it more each time I listen to it.
I do wish that Hana Pestle’s Need had made it onto the CD, a lot of Twi-fans really liked that song and were hopeful it would have been in the movie.
Summit(music director), I think that was a miss on your part!
While I agree that absolute judgement of this CD should be passed when we see how the tracks are involved in the movie, I have to say - I love this soundtrack. I am ecstatic that they didn’t feel the need to fill it with “big names” such as Kelly Clarkson or other pop, mainstream artists. Not every song’s lyrics included on a soundtrack need to encompass the body of the movie or book…the music needs to fit the scene. This CD is filled with smart, organic and original music that I’m glad Summit chose to introduce their intended audience to. They didn’t make a soundtrack or a movie geared toward a specific age group…which I think we can all appreciate.
I agree with Shannon17, these songs will most likely be musical blips in the background and Alexandre Desplat’s score may take integral moments, such as Bella’s run through Volterra to a whole other level. And speaking of Alexandre Desplat, I think “The Meadow” is amazing…I can close my eyes and be taken away. I look forward to hearing the score!
I do not agree. I don’t think any of the songs were dull or lifeless.
I love this soundtrack! Band of skulls and Muse are great, Thom Yorke’s song is awesome, and the song “possibility”? Heartrenching. The meadow song is great too. It is what I imagined “bella’s lulluby” to sound like. Is sounds more like what stephanie described in the book(in twilight and MS). I was disapointed in “bella’s Lulluby” from the twilight the movie. I think all the music(score) will be stepped up. Also the song “Rosyln” sounds like the song that would be playing while bella is drowning, as she’s seeing Edward…some of the other songs like “the violet hour” sound like jacob and bella time. I do wish there was some Rpattz on this album though!
Side note: I agree with shannon17, I never liked the perry song either! Awful!
i admit that when i first listened to it, i wasn’t sure. but the more i listen to it, the more i like it. i can see where some of the songs would go. but i agree with shannon17…im a bit reserved on some of the songs, and ill wait to see where they fit in.
Is it just me or do most of the songs on the album seem really flat and off tune. Maybe they’re trying to do some representation of Bella’s mood i dunno. To me, it just seems that most of them sound the same with nothing special about them at all, though, the TWILIGHT soundtrack would be hard to beat.
PS love the Bella’s new lullaby SO beautiful!!!
The Muse song is what will be used for the race in the piazza, IMO.
EVERY song on this album is fabulous outside of No Sound but the Wind by Editors- TERRIBLE song.
I can tell you where every song will be played in the movie- between the lyrics and the sound of the song it is rather easy. Add to that the sound mixers ability to remix the music? I bet you’d be surprised at how the album will be adjusted to fit.
I agree this album is completely different than the Twilight soundtrack but it is just as awesome.
I know not everyone will agree but those who think Pink or Kelly Clarkson (WHAT!?) should have been names on this need to take a step back and remember we are talking deep messages here.
Please.
Do not like the Soundtrack at all,but I didn’t like Twilight’s either(and now I love it),so I suppose I will wait and see, like everyone else to what fits or what was put out just to grab some bucks!!$$$
The album in my opinion is exactly right, it covers the main depth of new moon, complete agony and each song takes me through the book as I read it, some tracks are lingering and very sad and that is exactly right in my opinion, this movie is to be heart wrenching and based on the soundtrack I think we’re going to get what Stephenie Meyer promises in her book.
Jenna, I totally agree. Alot of New Moon is heartbreaking and I think this music fits the feel of the book. I will admit that on my first listen I wasn’t completely sure. But now after a few listens I absolutely love it all and I cannot wait to see where it all fits in the movie. I also couldn’t be happier that they haven’t filled the soundtrack with the likes of mainstream Kelly Clarkson etc. I love the indie feel and it has just made me all the more desperate to see the movie. I think we all need to be careful not to criticise too much or it is just going to ruin the whole fabulous Twilight experience.
Overall, I’m not impressed with the ‘New Moon’ sound track. I have a hard time listening to it all the way through. After a few songs, I always change to something else. I do like the Death cab for cutie song, and the meadow song is absolutely beautiful but most everything in between is too whiney. I realise this film is about loss and longing, but there’s a big difference between those strong emotions and the whiney music on the cd. Songs that have real emotion in them stick with you, these songs are forgotten as soon as they finish playing.
