TA TALKS BACK: HOW IMPORTANT ARE THE DETAILS?

Posted September 24th, 2009 By: 28 Comments »

For today’s TATB, I take a look at how important the details from the books are to the production of the Twilight movies.

How Important are the Details? By: Becky

Pictures have surfaced from the set of Eclipse, specifically from the reconstructed police station. One of those pictures showed the name plate on Charlie’s desk which read Sheriff Swan. Wait. Sheriff Swan? When did Charlie become the sheriff of Forks? The reaction from at least one Twilighter I spoke with was an upset one. Others apparently don’t think it really matters, that it’s only the nameplate on a desk that likely won’t even really been seen, especially up close, in the movie.

This had me wondering. What about the other little or not so little details that have been changed from the book to the movies. Have they hurt the story? How important in the grand scheme of things are they to the telling of the Saga on screen versus being important to the fans?

We all know that the story was changed in a number of ways from the first book to the first movie. Some of that was necessary. It’s not always possible to convey on screen the same things you read in a book. Scenes were added, scenes were taken away. Details were changed to better fit the telling of the story onscreen. Some of them were relatively minor, like the look of the Cullen’s house. That really doesn’t affect the story line, and it made for a better scene of Bella and Edward’s first run through the woods to the meadow. But minor things like the color of Edward’s car are important to fans. Was it really impossible to leave it silver for Eclipse? Did that have to change? Some of the changes were major – anyone else realize at first that Jasper is now in the same grade as Edward, Bella, and Alice? That never even occurred to me until recently, when it was pointed out after we saw pictures of Jackson Rathbone on set in costume as Jasper when they were filming graduation. What does that mean for the rest of the story? Why was this change made?

We’ve heard that Chris Weitz decided to add the scene of Bella being stitched up by Carlisle to the movie. Why was this not in the script he was given at the beginning of shooting? It is an important scene in the story of New Moon itself, as well as being an important scene in the whole of the Twilight Saga. It gives Bella more insight to why Carlisle is the way he is, what he sees for the Cullens as a family and why Edward feels the way he does about Bella’s becoming a vampire. Why would such a scene be left out?

We’ve also now seen pictures from the set of Eclipse showing a moment between Victoria and Reily. Some have wondered at the filming of this scene. Why was it needed? Here is where adding a scene and changing some of the details is necessary. In the book, we don’t see Victoria creating her army or tricking Reily into thinking she has any affection for him. We only read about a supposed rampant serial killer, Bella realizes it is all really the doing of Victoria, and Edward tries to convince Reily of Victoria’s true feelings before destroying him. This all needs to be obvious on screen. It needs to be set up for the viewer. Victoria’s vampire army can’t appear out of thin air with no explanation. The story onscreen has to play to not only the fans of the book but someone that has never heard of the story before. But what was cut from the story that fans think or know is important in favor of this scene?

In the end we can’t have everything in one movie that we’d all like to have. Every fan has his or her list of what they think is important to the story. And we aren’t the people making the movie. But we’d like to think those that are have taken some time to listen to us and to think about all of the details – big ones like important scenes and small ones like proper character job titles.

What do you think, TAers? Talk back to us…

I think that details are very important. Something that is a big deal to one reader may not be such a big deal to another, and I think that this is where things get dicey. Obviously you can’t please everyone, but I think that some of the scenes left out of “Twilight” were huge. I, personally, am worried about the rest of the Saga, since it has been revealed that they will all be written by the same person. I actually feel sorry for the writer! When you have a story that is so loved, by so many people, the pressure must be so great! For this reason, I think she would have been better off if she had strayed less from Stephenie Meyer’s original story. Things like the color of Edward’s car are fairly minor, if she explains the change. Did he wreck his car when he ran from Bella? Did it break down? Were there to many memories and he had to get a new one to salvage some of his sanity? I would accept any reason… I hope she gives us one. Now if she tries to just pass it off like “what do you mean the car is different?” that will be a different story. The problem is that we love these books so much, that we know every detail! (Has any other author had to answer so many different questions and go into such great detail with her answers as poor Stephenie?)We should be accepting to some change in the screen adaptaion, but I think that there should be great respect and attention paid to the original world that is Twilight.

  • vamped4Edward

I wish the movies themselves were longer in length. Why not 2-2 1/2 hours? The fans wouldn’t mind. I understand that things must be changed, but the little details do bother me. If there’s no reason to change something, then leave it alone.

  • Theresa

Yes, It does bother me. The slight changes to compensate for the conversion to screen I can say dont bother me. But, Come on the black Volvo? Is it that hard to get a silver one. (It’s also black in New Moon). I also saw a picture where the jeep is black now. I do understand showing what is going on with Victoria and Riley. Just on the film making side of it. And I do understand that they have to cut out part of the story to put it into a 2 hr film. I just hope they keep to the story better on the next 3 than they did on the first.

  • Miranda

Okay…I think maybe they changed the volvo, because someone wanted to advertise it on screen…and so they got that black one free. That is what I think…*sighs* I also have no idea why they had to call Charlie a sheriff….what’s the point? I don’t think it would make anybody happy….it would only tick some people off. If you think about it, it’s not a huge deal…but just why would they do that? Makes no sense..unless maybe Billy Burke wanted to be called a sheriff lol that sounds like him, because he wanted to also shave off Charlies mustache…sometimes I wonder if they think up ways to make fans mad.

  • Gabby

Ok, details ARE important because we know they are changing the storyline. Mainly because not everyone has read the books and they need to explain it in a shorter amount of time. So things like changing the SILVER Volvo to a black one really pisses me off. That is an important detail, very important, and seriously like they can’t afford to buy or even rent another silver volvo??? Us fans, that’s basically all we really get out of it, the details. Because we know when we are watching, and we see something that goes by unnoticed by someone that hasn’t read the books, it makes us really happy. All in all Summit has been really mean lately -_- I hope the movie is still good, but my hopes for Eclipse went down as soon as the recast for Victoria happened…

  • http://twilightersanonymous Marianne

The problem I have with change is when you have a franchise the films have to build on one another so if the first film has a lot of material left out or changed than the subsequent films all have to honor those changes or have story lines left out, or play catch-up. Twilight being the beloved series it is with such a huge fan base that knows every detail of the story, to make it a success, you have to pay attention to the details.
The first Twilight movie was so wildly accepted because we fans wanted so bad to see it made into a movie and were willing to over look some details, but as it turned out there were too many details that the writer and director left out and changed so although we were disappointed in some respect we still loved it for what it was.
We want the rest to be better and better.

  • robiewankenobie

my concern is not so much that they are purposefully changing details, but that they are missing them altogether through carelessness. if they are oblivious to the car, are they going to miss out on bigger matters? man, i hope the next movies don’t suck. that would be so daggum disappointing.

  • abby

AND Jacob’s rabbit is supposed to be RED!

  • Jessica

I, like many of the others who have written something here, care about the details. The minors things make up the whole that we all have fallen in love with. When a change is made, it’s supposed to be, “what difference does it make? It’s minor.” So my question would be, if it’s so minor it doesn’t matter, why not just do it right?

  • Mil

I just get this feeling that Melissa Rosenburg thinks she owns the world, that every thing she’s added is a work of art, and while some of it is, a lot is just lies. They know we will watch it either way and at least pretend to like it. And in a lot of ways they are taking advantage of that. If it’s good or bad I know I will end up seeing it at least twice and buying the DVD when it comes out.As for the little things, I could easily handle a few, but the Volvo, that hit home, I really scared my family when I found out about that. The silver Volvo is a symbol it the Twilight universe and to change it is just wrong. There is a reason it is silver. Silver is a lot less likely to be seen it the rainy weather of forks and there for would get caught less by cops then say a BLACK one. And Jasper, yeah that may hurt the plot a bit. If he is twins with Rosalie and she already graduated, was he held back?

  • Erin

I am upset by the black Volvo – it’s not that important a detail in the big scheme of things, so why the need to change the color??? I don’t mind a model change, but a color change is very obvious and there’s no really good explanation as to why black was suddenly needed! In regards to Riley and Victoria, I actually have a problem with that as well. A large plot point is the uncertainty in regards to who is creating the army and why? Is it Victoria or is there something going on with the Volturi? Instead of letting the audience discover with the Cullen family what is going on, we have to learn about it before them and it ruins the suspense. Of course, those of us who’ve read the books know the answer, but those who have just seen the movies are losing out on that mystery. And, quite frankly, I don’t think it is at all necessary to have the romance between Riley and Victoria shown – the comments between them when they get to the clearing with Edward and Bella are sufficient.

I really hate when they add to the story; there is plenty there in the books that can be worked with without having to add more. I understand cutting and rearranging things to streamline/condense the story, but adding is just a waste of screen time.

  • Sarah

I agree pretty much with the whole piece… There are some things that simply shouldn’t have been changed, whether they be considered minor pieces or not. With relation to the scene in New Moon where Carlisle is stitching up Bella and they have the whole “compassion” conversation etc, and you questioned how they could have thought about not including this. Its possible that they had the same conversation or pieced together the same information somewhere else in the movie… I noticed it happened a fair bit in the Twilight movie compared to the movie, as I read the books for the first time after having watched the movie and I was constantly going “hang on a second, this isn’t until later, or there were two seperate conversations in the book and they compiled it into 1 for the movie”. Was kind of confusing for a bit, but I can understand it… sometimes you do jostle things around because it simply works better for the screenplay.

  • Twilight Mom Australia

    What about continuity???
What about continuity??? How about staying true to the book. Twilight Fans especially , know the saga inside out. Yes in the Movie Twilight things were left out, while other thinks were added, etc.. like Marianne said it was wildly accepted because we fans wanted so bad to see it made into a movie and were willing to over look some details. We want the rest to be better and better. Yes indeed.
Also Catherine did not have the budget Chris had and now David has so they need to be getting better and better.
I have a question, Summit have changed Directors from Catherine to Chris to David to???
Why have they not changed Melissa Rosenburg??
From all the Trailers I have seen over and over again from New Moon. I really think New Moon will be fantastic, fingers Xed.
When the photos first came out about some cast members and people were saying the wigs look bad or they did not like the makeup etc…I thought these are minor details…I know Kristen will have a wig in Eclipse, so to me no biggie… makeup, no worries either the cast are all gorgeous regardless again no biggie.
BUT then David Slade came along and did not make friends with us Twilight Fans about certain comments he made re the series etc….Then they said David will put “his own spin on the story” and it will be “darker”. Summit changed Victoria because of * cough* “certain schedule differences”. My alarm bells are going off and I am getting a wee bit concerned.
I have said this before where is Stephenie?? Tell you what if the Twilight Saga was my baby
I would be there and make sure all the legal documents state that I would have a say in what goes into the movies and what’s left out!!!!
We would sit through 3 4 5 hrs if it means the stories are true to the books
Tell you what if David leaves out the IMPORTANT love story bits there will be anarchy
by diehard Twilight Fans, that’s for sure…
When Photos of New Moon first filtered through we were all excited , now photos
of Eclipse are coming out and we are all uh oh “worried.” Newborns out of the water??
Victoria and Riley kissing, who cares about them kissing I want to see them ripped apart and killed. Leave the romance to Edward and Bella.
David and Melissa READ Eclipse PLEASE
Stephenie fly to Vancouver don’t let them butcher Eclipse!!!

  • emmy

I agree Erin! Why do they have to cut and add scenes? The book plays it out so well there is no need for extra scenes if they stick to the book. Blame Melissa Rosenburg… And the little details? I think are EXTREMELY important, because some of them are what makes Twilight, Twilight. Like the car! oh dont get me started. And Jasper’s year- i hadnt even realised that was going on until i read it then. What is sposed to happen in new moon when all bellas friends are supposed to be more comfortable around edward and alice because the older ones are gone??? I dont like people stuffing around with the plotline of books-movies, and CERTAINLY not twilight!

  • ninachr

I think the details are important, but I do understand the need to change some things…Some things I don’t get however..In the trailer for New Moon it looks like Bella finds out about Jacob RIGHT after Laurent goes after her, AND in the trailer it looks like Edward TELLS Bella that he’s leaving to keep her safe…The Jacob thing doesn’t really change much, but if the movie comes out and Edward actually tells her the REAL reson for them leaving, the I think I will kill someone..Because that would change Bella’s sadness in the movie..You get a different reaction if he leaves her knowing that he still loves her..I do hope that that’s just shitty editing for the trailer. And one more thing, what’s up with the New Moon set pictures with Bella lying in a bed in the middle of the forrest…Why??How does that fit in??

  • Larissa

I do think that certain details are important, however I do know that some can be changed and it’s not such a big deal. I wish that Jasper was still kept in the grade that Emmett and Rosalie are in, however it doesn’t say, in the movie, that Rosalie and Jasper are twins so for Jasper to be in the same grade as Alice and Edward is not such a big deal.

As for the volvo now being black, I’m pretty sure it was because they don’t make the silver anymore and they don’t have the one from Twilight, so that change I can understand.

Adding in things for the movie, it depends. Showing the nomads before the baseball scene made sense for the movie. Showing the Victoria and Riley things also make sense so you don’t have to spend forever telling everybody that stuff at the end of the movie.

Bella having a laptop computer is not a big deal, it’s not going to change anything in the long run.

I think certain details need to be kept but if they are going to change it for the movie, then only do it if it makes sense and there is reasoning behind it and not just because.

  • Nicole Loves Edward

I think they should try to keep as many of the little things in the movies as they can. They could have used the same car throughout, instead of buying one that is more blockbuster worthy and sleek looking. I also would have wanted the scene from Twilight when Bella comes downstairs and runs into Edward and then he kisses her and she faints. I love that scene.

  • Emilia

Maybe the black volvo is the reason every person in the cast is saying that New Moon and Eclips are going to be “darker” than Twilight… lol. Details DO matter, but I think they are not important as long as they keep the major plot scenes faithful to the book. WHY WASN’T THE BLOOD TEST AND THE CAFETERIA WINK SCENE ON TWILIGHT?! That is something I will never forgive Melissa Rosenberg for. Rob winking, Priceless!

  • Jen

Just wanted to point out that in the books, even Stephenie slipped up and had Bella refer to Charlie as “sheriff”.

  • MandaPanda

As with most of you, I agree that the details do matter. I am also concerned with the the reports that Eclipse will be “darker” than the others. I didn’t get that perception when reading the books. To me, Eclipse was my favorite because it showed two love stories and displayed how one person can have two loves, just different. It is also where Bella and Edward’s love for each other truly develops and is sealed. I would be very disappointed if they leave out the scenes where Jacob kisses Bella or Bella agrees to marry Edward and he shows her the ring.

We all understand that there have to be some changes and I have yet to see a Movie adaptation that is better than the book. I do have to say that I was very disappointed in the Meadow scene in the Twilight Movie. I felt it was rushed and left out so much information as to why Bella means so much to Edward. It was just like “oh you’re not afraid of me? well, you don’t know how long I’ve waited for you…” Everything else was okay for me but I was very disappointed in that aspect of the movie.

I am excited to see New Moon even though there will be major changes. Like the fight with the Volturi. That doesn’t happen but it’s a movie and they are simply trying to appeal to a larger audience.

  • Anita

I think they should have gotten a better script writer than Melissa, she wasn’t very good doing Twilight and she cahgnes too many things.

  • Chelle

I’m kind of standing in the middle of this issue. Yes I understand why the little details matter, they do serve as the stamps in the story, and such a beloved story that Twilight is, I’m a bit puzzled as to why Summit and everyone involved in the background movie making of things don’t seem to understand that by now. I mean it’s not like we’ve been quiet about what we want and expect from these movies.

On the other hand, I’m not in the movie business so who knows what the reasons are behind these changes that don’t seem to make sense to us. So for things I cannot change, I will have to just accept it. For me, I will just sit back, see the movie, take it all in, and look at the big picture overall, which is how I feel after seeing the movie. Did it make me feel the same way the book did? Did it take me through the horror of Bella losing Edward? Did it let me feel that burning hole in her chest? Did I feel that cautious friendship she developed with Jacob and pending confusion if it can be more towards the end? Did it make my heart pound while she races through Volterra to save Edward? If the movie manages to convey all that to me, someone who’s read the book countless of times, then I say they’ve done their job. Eclipse, however, is another story… still trying keeping faith on that one.

  • jenb

For the most part I don’t mind some changes being made. I understand that book & movies are two different mediums and unfortunatley the movie can’t be exactly like the book. Yes some of my favorite parts from the book weren’t in Twilight the movie, but I try not to think about that & enjoy the movie for what it is a movie. (My mom & grandmother who have never read the books both loved the movie.) And I know some people who hadn’t read the books before seeing the movie, loved the movie & that got them to read the books. So the movie has been a great way to get new fans of the books.

When it comes to changing Edward’s car color I really don’t get it. Why would the need to do that? Or feel the need to do that? I just hope whoever made the decision had a really good excuse. It’s a little detail that’s not important to the romantic side of the story, but still. It was silver in Twilight & should remain silver in all the other movies!

  • Meg

I think that Melissa Rosenberg thinks that she is writing HER version of New Moon, Eclipse, & Twilight before that. It seems as if she thinks all her ideas are amazing. She adds in details like “fleshing out Riley” that she thinks everyone will like but really no one cares about Riley as much as she thinks. She is definitely NOT a good screenwriter and I don’t understand why she was brought on after Twilight; she left out many, many important scenes from the book, and it seems as if she has no clue how to develop relationships between characters on screen, because in the movie it seemed as if Bella and Edward just suddenly fell in love. The fans of Twilight understood that, but for people who were just seeing the movie, it was very confusing.

  • twiolic

The more I read Twilight and Midnight Sun the angrier I get about the changes and omissions made in the transition from book to movie. For instance, Edward and Bella were already in the car after the restaurant. How difficult would it have been for the vampire revelation scene to be done at that time instead of in the forest, where it DID NOT happen. Don’t even get me started on the all important meadow chapter in the book that never made it to the big screen. I don’t know where the blame lies for this egregious changes, but since the same screenwriter is being used, we may be in for disappointment in New Moon and Eclipse as well.

  • http://myspace.com/shatterd_hopes CinderellasDeathWish

I don’t honestly see the need to change anything…if youve ever read a steven king novel and then watched it on video it is basically the same. So why the need to change everything in the twilight series… i was really upset watching the movie and seeing that they had taken out The reasons behind alice’s transformation…everything with james. before i saw the 3rd trailer i was so worried that instead of seeing bella go cliff diving she was just going to crash her motorcycle… i understand taking a few minor details out of the books so it doesnt wind up dragging and being 6 hours long…but do they really think thats its better to completely change scenes and write there own? i think stephenie should be the one doing the screenwriting. They werent going to do the movie scene in new moon or rosalies transformation at all… they added a bigger part for victoria…and the new part in new moon…where instead of seeing the guys in the bar in port angelas bella gets on one there motorcycles… it makes jessica seem like less of a bitch…like instead of not talking to bella for no reason now you can understand why shes not talking to bella…ugh, im so not excited to see what they take and add in the rest of the series… if its like the first one im going to be really upset…as im sure most of us will be.

  • http://ee520aol.com TEAMBELLAKRISTEN

i relly dont know what to say im excited for new moon i believe that chris weitz understands what it means for fans so i have good feeling new moon will b awesome… AS for ECLIPSE im scarrrrrrredddd idk what ti think i mean i know that they wont let the movie be bad but david slade?????? how many movies has he directed and there letting him direct like the biggest movie next year, and dnt even get me started on mellissa rossenberg idk,,,,, i hope eclipse will b fine,,…..
LETS ALL HOPE MELISSA ISNT WRITNG BREAKING DAWN BUT I WOULDNT HOLD BREATH, UGH!

    BUT YAY FOR NEW MOON!!

  • http://twilightersanonymous Marianne

I think I’ll be okay with New Moon because CW is also a writer and had fixed MR’s script, putting the things in left out that were important to the story, and expanded on story lines to make things better.
DS is not a writer so Eclipse is the movie I’m worried about.

The whole cast remarked on how good the script for New Moon was when before and after they started filming. Rob especially.
We have not heard a word about the script for Eclipse being good, that scares me. Rob did say he was being argumentive about the script soooo
it would make one wonder why??????

If MR has full rein over everything that’s in there, cough, cough, cough,
    OMG.
