TA member Just a girl talks about the choice between mortality and immortality:

Mortality vs Immortality by just_a_girl

“When you can live forever, what do you live for?” As fans of the Twilight Saga, we are faced with this very burning question, not only from Edward or Bella’s perspective, but from our own as well. This question relates not only to the vampires of the story, but each reader who will come to ponder his or her own mortality. To be or not to be an immortal, that is the question and a tough one at that. Bella makes her decision quite early in the saga, but as I considered all of the pros and cons of an immortal life, I’m certain I could have not come to her conclusion so easily.

In contemplating this scenario, I do not place myself in Bella’s shoes. It’s difficult to be objective when you’re so madly in love and I imagine that many immortals did not come to be an immortal with as much to gain as Bella. Bella would enter the immortal world with a new family, the love of her existence, and much more. Hardly any vampire could say the same.

Setting love and the Cullens aside, why would anyone wish to become immortal? The first reason is very simple; you will never die. For those who fear the reaper, that alone is enough. But being an immortal has many more perks. As an immortal, you get to witness history. Forget reading about it in text books, you were there! You get to watch as the world changes, as new technologies emerge, as life for everyone is altered. When you can live forever, you get a chance to travel the world, learn to do anything you’ve ever dreamed of, earn various degrees, and reading all the classics. Cast off the chains of a mortal life, you are bound to no one and nothing.

With all immortal life has to offer, who wouldn’t want to give up their lives? Me. As I imagined all of the wonders of the life immortal, I quickly discovered the pitfalls. One of the biggest for me is the loss of family and friends. You watch as your family and friends die one by one, knowing that if you live forever, you will never see them again. As an immortal, you are not guaranteed a soul and you are not guaranteed any kind of afterlife if you are unfortunately dismembered and set ablaze. And what if you were to find your “Bella” or “Edward”? We know how much Edward struggled with the idea of giving Bella the life of an immortal. Could we do the same? Next, I feel there would be an incredible amount of isolation as an immortal. The secret of an immortal life is a heavy burden. You must constantly move and keep to yourself in order to maintain that secrecy. You have to adapt to change, and for someone like myself, that can be quite difficult.

Living forever also means observing the horrors of human life. This means witnessing wars, pandemics, suffering, and possibly the end of human civilization. Then what? What happens if there is indeed an apocalypse? Do you continue on, while all else has vanished? How wonderful would your immortal life be then? The idea of forever is one my mind struggles to comprehend. I often wonder if I had the chance to become immortal might there come a time when forever becomes too long for me to bear?

From books like the Twilight Series to the movie Highlander, we as a society will continue to contemplate the possibilities and struggles of an immortal life. It will also continue to be a hotly debated topic amongst Twilighters, with each fan ultimately making the decision that would right for them. Some may read this and feel I have nitpicked this subject, but aren’t these the important things we would consider before making this very big and very permanent decision?

Who wants to live forever? Not me.

    Just a Girl,

Well said. I too would not want to live forever. There is something about the mortal part of our lives, that we have a short time here we should be all grabbing every second we can. Good scene in Troy when Achilles (Brad Pitt) says the ‘Gods’ envy us because we are mortal.

I hadn’t read the books before I saw Twilight and I agreed with Edward at the end about not wanting to change Bella. Although I admit after reading all the books I can understand why she changed and agee that on this occasion it was OK.

    Intersting thoughts……

Just A Girl: WELL WRITTEN>>>To be with Edward “Forever” I certainly would consider immortality. For myself,NEVER. I enjoyed the Highlander series and it was so sad when their loved ones died and they continued on and on. Would Edward have truly loved being with her when she got really old and wrinkled-like her Grandma? Maybe. Bella would have HATED it because he would be beautiful FOREVER. Changed my mind,if I were Bella, I would not just consider it,I WOULD DO IT!

If i meet my soulmate- and they were a vamp [haha xD] i would totally do it. because everylasting life with someone like edward? i could get used too it. :D
    butttt..my only true deal with it would be this;
wouldnt it just end up being..boring?
i mean even with someone like edward, [impossible to think though!]
after a while without any “adventures/challenges”. it would get boring. because theres nothing new.
but i would say this would take a long time ;] [because its edward.freakin.cullen. he cant get boring!]
buttt atleast having the baby. and the volturi and everyone it keeps everything amazing. and like i said before. edward freakin cullen!

Well said… I would not want to life forever, (with Edward mm,??) but other than that no.
I may be a wet blanket here but the world isn’t getting any better from now on….it would have been good say 1900-now, there you would have seen to see the change in the world we are talking, cars, TV, Planes, computers, medical that change in Technology yes. NOW, no, we have global warming, the financial crisis, people losing their jobs, losing their homes everything is getting more expensive, and the nuclear thing…I have 2 boys just hit the teens.. but if I did not have children now I would think twice about having children , the world is getting overpopulated, more polluted , more expensive, … I feel sorry for the generations coming up behind us.
So back to the mortal immortal thing, I stay mortal , when your time is up it’s up…no more worries.

It’s nice to dream about the pros of immortality (and an Edward Cullen would be the best of the benefits) but seriously, there are pros and cons to absolutely everything. Even Edward kept saying to Bella “you don’t know what you are saying!” In the end, Bella didn’t really have a “choice” because the change was necessary to save her life since, like the others, she was indeed dying. That part was extremely well done by SM!
I wouldn’t want to be a constant witness to the horrors of this world even though I’m a huge history buff and love being a witness to history. And I know that most people seem to shy away from discussions of faith, but most people I know believe we will be immortal one day – just not on this earth. I personally prefer looking forward to the immortality of heaven!

Well now that my long, heart-felt response is lost out in the cyberverse somewhere…hate when that happens.
I would have to say that I would choose immortality.
Child-free, ageing parents and a perennial “late bloomer” I have to say that I would choose it realizing that I would have to be self sustaining and self-entertaining.
I love Carlisle b/c he chooses to use his immortality to do good; I would love the opportunity to do the same whether it be from the sidelines or in the background.
One life time is not long enough to do all that I want to do and while I realize (I am after all several decades old) that forever is a very long time, I would still choose to be immortal. The few changes I’ve seen over the last 40 odd years are enough to convince me that I would want to see what comes next. And as a woman of strong faith, I believe that if immortality were possible on this earth it would not be an accident. I have to believe that if it were possible, there would be other like-minded people in the same position. And I would want to be a part of it.
Thanks, just a girl, for such a great topic and giving me the chance to articulate some of th ideas that have been in my mind for a very long time now.

If I had the choice to become immortal I would do it. I never want to die. Being a vampire(as u said in the article) i can do whatever I want. I can go anywhere, whenever I want to.

  • Erenn

I have to agree with Twilightbloom here… I’d definitely consider it an opportunity that I don’t want to miss out on… However, I’m in a different position. I have a family. While I love them dearly, I am nomadic by nature and don’t mind the changes. I wouldn’t leave them, of course, but to outlive them….. It’s something to consider. I don’t know that I would enjoy it, but the possiblities for experiencing life well past the normal expectancy would be outstanding. There are so many things that I want to do and experience that I know I won’t be able to do them all in one lifetime anyway… And although I love my husband, he’s not my Edward….

I don’t believe I’ve ever encountered anyone that I “can’t live without”. I would LOVE to find that person.

  • Amy

It all depends on who you live immortality with if everyone u love will die there is no point because then u would be alone. if i was bella i would sacrifce that for edward like she does because that is what she lives for but me not unless i had someone 2 share it with.

  • Jennifer

Inmortality is a very severe punishment. There is no other torture in the world that is worse than inmortality.
