TA TALKS BACK: RACHELLE RECAST!…GASP!

Site Owner Bella Cullen shares some thoughts on the news that role of Victoria was recast.

Statements made here are solely the opinion of one person and do not reflect a stance from the site as a whole.

Rachelle Recast!…Gasp! by Bella Cullen

I can’t help but observe that in the entertainment world when certain news hits, there are some annoyingly common statements released by publicists. For example, when a decision has been made that can cause negative press, the most often used reason is…”due to scheduling conflicts.” I’ve seen this at least twice already this week for recent celeb breakups and have seen it used countless times for decision changes at studios. And now, this recent announcement that Rachelle LeFevre has been replaced is…you guessed it…due to scheduling conflicts.

According to detailed statements from both sides this apparently really is the case. Before these statements were released however, I have to admit I found this reason really hard to believe. She seemed so committed to the role. Why else would she fight for it, even going as far as to write a long letter to the director or whoever; helping her get the part? As a devoted Twilighter myself, I loved the fact that she was a fan and so passionate that she felt compelled to do this. So I was very sad to hear that this had happened to her.

But truth be told, I’m optimistic about the change. Seeing Rachelle in the role of Victoria, as much as I wanted her to succeed, she just didn’t quite sell it for me. I think that maybe she’s too appealing as an actress. Her eyes weren’t right and I found her too soft looking, pretty and uncomplicated…not at all wild, menacing or sneaky as Victoria was described in the books.

So this schedule overlap just might be a blessing in disguise. I’m simply hoping that any changes that happen will only make better movies. From what I’ve seen so far, I think that Summit is finally giving the Twilight Saga it’s due by putting in a lot more money and quality into the following movies than they did with Twilight. I know I’m probably going to upset just a few fans out there by saying this…but in my opinion Twilight was not made the best that it could be. But that’s a whole other discussion… Let me just pose this, can’t you just imagine all the ways Twilight could have been better had there been more financial confidence from its producers?

On another note, I know that they can’t help it most of the time, but it REALLY does bother me when they replace actors in a series…ugh, Have you seen the latest Mummy movie? And come on, Richard Harris was Dumbledore!…But I digress, my point is…maybe it’s my slight OCD (compulsive not Cullen…this time anyway, lol), I usually find these replacements distracting and downright disappointing. This time however, I find myself excited to see Bryce Dallas Howard as Victoria. In the past, I have not seen actor replacements as an improvement in movie franchises…but in this case for Victoria, it just might be. Even though I have only seen Bryce as sweet and vulnerable types….in her larger roles, she seems to possess an understated cunningness that’s simply mesmerizing. I think she’s capable of bringing something special to this character…plus her eyes are just right ;)

I agree that the change maybe a blessing in disguise. I guess we will have to wait and see. I agree that the replacing of characters in a series is annoying but it is sometimes necessary. I think your comparison with Richard Harris is off base because the only reason Michael Gambon was cast as Dumbledore was because Harris died. Check your facts before you write.

  • amanda

agreed that there was so much more that needed to be put into twilight….BUT, no kovie is ever as good as the book it is based on. I don’t agree, however, that bryce dallas howard, has a better {“victoria” look to her than rachelle( please note the picture that makes her look like a fairy nymph). Rachelle had an attitude about her that showed; no matter how much we gripe and moan, it will not change.

  • Miranda

Dumbledore was only replaced because the actor died! I do like Michael Gambon too though, and how could you be disappointed with him?! He brought something great to the role!

I disagree about Twilight being a bad movie…seriously how could you even say that?! It’s perfect as it is..sure a few flaws..but every movie has flaws!

Rachelle is VICTORIA! I’m really saddened that she was replaced…she was so greatly committed and I saw her as Victoria when I read the books!

  • Jen

Casting change that made a movie better:

Katie Holmes being fired and replaced with Maggie Gyllenhal in the Christopher Nolan Batman films.

But Katie got fired for not promoting Batman Begins…not the same as what has happened here…just had to throw that in.

    Thanks for your responses!

@choirchick – BTW, I am aware that Harris was replaced because he died, that’s why I mentioned “I know they can’t help it(replacing actors).”

@amanda – I posted the picture of Bryce because I thought it showed how appropriate her eyes looked, not because she looked like Victoria in the pic.

  • http://www.TwilightersAnonymous.com Bella Cullen

@Jen – Good one, forgot about that one!

@Miranda – I didn’t say Twilight was a bad movie! lol…I said it could have been better. You’re right all movies have their flaws. I also know about Harris dying…I guess some people are missing the beginning of my statement “I know that they can’t help it most of the time…when they replace actors in a series…”

  • Tonya

thanks for not just doing the whole “OMG!! i sooo cannot believe they replaced rachelle” knee-jerk response everyone seems to be doing. while i like rachelle herself, i must totally agree that she just wasn’t menacing enough to be victoria.
thanks for posting a nice, well thought out opinion!

  • shannon17

“menacing”, I guess to each her own..

She looked pretty menacing in the final frames of Twilight–as if looks could kill.

Unless someone dies or an actor is just gawdawful, I find it hard to justify recasts. Neither is the case in this situation.

I’m not placing blame on Summit outright, though, because we probably won’t ever know what really happened. I would love to, though!

Summit’s explanation of conflicting schedules does seem possible to me. A movie isn’t just an actor showing up the day of shooting, standing on their spot, and regurgitating lines. Was she going to be available for all the prep work? May be Summit and the director didn’t see the need to work around Rachelle’s scheduled other movie when such a worthy replacement was available?

  • Chelle

I’m trying to accept this inevitable change, nothing we can do. I don’t know how Bryce is as an actor, and I have no choice but to accept her as Victoria, as much as I love Rachelle.

One thought comes to mind after reading so many responses about this whole mess… how do we know that Rachelle didn’t have enough menace in her to portray a truly evil Victoria? We’ve only seen her in Twilight, and frankly, Victoria was just a plain bad vampire. We have yet to see her performance in NM where she is out for vengeance. Who’s to say that Rachelle didn’t perform enough ferocity for that story? And now we’ll never know how she would have acted as an even more evil vampire in Eclipse. Just wanted to throw that out there.

  • Susan Antony

I dissagree. You only have to watch the unshortened version of the scene from the movie where she was leading the trackers away to see what she could do when given the material. I thought her slighly off center smile made her come off as very beautifully evil and menacing. She could definately lure her bate. Sort of, I bite your neck and kill you while I am smiling at you.

  • MSUBando

I agree with Chelle, we haven’t seen Rachelle’s performance in New Moon so I can’t judge how good her performance of a vengeful Victoria will be.

  • *sigh*

Richard Harris died. I know that’s already been commented on, but I have to add my two cents. Some generic “I know they can’t help it” doesn’t explain that YOU KNOW he died, hence his replacement.

  • Pauline

It is not true that she has scheduling conflicts, she said in an interview with people magazine that she purposely put herself into roles around the twilight movies because she is so dedicated to them, and that shes really upset that they did this to her. She also said it was completely unexpected.

  • Veronica

I have to say even though its kinda sad i really think that this person has a point and this change maybe good. But again we wont no till we see the movie but i have to admit i never really saw Rachel as Victoria. Shes just wasnt really what i envisioned she was pretty good at scaring me but that was really about it. Her look though definitely not what i envisioned. But this new girl she might have a chance she definitely has the right look at least to me. Again i could be wrong but who knows and to be kinda sarcastic here but all Victoria does in eclipse is die. So i dont think this knew girl will have really big shoes to fill. Sorry to say and i hope i dont get hate mail for that.

  • miss_amanda

Rachelle is still Victoria in my mind. Had she died (God forbid), I could see Bryce being a good replacement… but otherwise, no. No because, even though I can see some amount of blame being placed on her (even though SHE says that her contract was okay with her accepting other SHORT roles… 10 days is short), they would’ve worked it out if it had been another star. Maybe she doesn’t matter to them because her role is considered “minor”, but I care. *sigh*

I’m sure Bryce is going to do a good job. I just wish they kept Rachelle. I really loved her. I think she has a more “ferocity” than Bryce. Bryce is too cutesy and soft… Rachelle is more wild and raw (still beautiful though).

    Ahhhhh whatever.

  • sam

Summit, is there really no other way?? Rachelle fitted the image I had of Victoria in the book. She was able to project both femininity and evil at the same time in Twilight the movie. The feline quality was there, the eyes and hair were right. In fact, when I saw pictures of the Twilight supporting cast for the first time, only Rachelle clicked right away as Victoria. Took some time for the others supporting cast. That is just too bad she lost the role!!! I would hate for continuity to be ruined. Plus, she’s been going around promoting the movies. Sad, sad…

  • tracieann5

You have no idea what Bryce can do.. Bet she’ll be great, she’s an actress, its her job to be great! and she comes from a VERY talented father. She wont screw it up.

  • newborn1863

Well,I have to agree with the author of this, and say, “YOU ARE RIGHT” Twilight could have been so so so much better if they’d had someone directing using their heads instead of their hearts.Yes,Catherine brought passion to her movie but come on,she was jumping up and down most of the time exclaiming “this is cool,This is cool” God,It was not Cool..and as far as the replacement goes,I guess we shall see.In our own lives things happen that we do not appreciate…at the time..It isn’t until hindsight kicks in that we become grateful for the changes that had occured without our permission, true?!

  • Lainie88

I get what you mean about the eyes.

And I love Michael Gambon as dumbledore!! so maybe there is hope…..

I still think what Summit did was not cool

  • ghostgirl

i’m so sad about the victoria replacement i’ve always like her cause she was a fan of the books unlike most of the cast..so the entusiasm..joy and exciment showed in every press thing it was her charm. With the twilight thing well i also thik that it could have been done so much better…i’m kinda thinking they should re-filmed jajaj now that’s crazy!!!
but the point is as I’ve heard in other sites…the sad true is that as much as we try to change summit’s mind and bring rachelle back(not happening anyways) that’s not gonna stopped us from seeing ECLIPSE next year..is there anybody who’s not gonna see any of the following movies cause rachelle isn’t on it?????really??not even me ..so let’s give everybody a chance and hope they don’t make any other changes

  • Kim

Am I not understanding things correctly? From what I read there was a 10 day overlap with the movie Rachelle is doing and the start of training/rehersals for Eclipse. Meaning she would have missed 10 days of training. Not that the other movie only took 10 days to film. Summit’s reasoning, from what I read, was based on the fact that Rachelle signed on to the other movie knowing fully the start date for Eclipes and she didn’t bother telling anyone about the 10 day discrepancy. The other actors (i.e Robert, Kristen, Jackson etc.) are also filming other things, but I am betting they made sure that they would be done or the other projects would work around their schedule for Eclipes since they signed on for that first. Its called being considerate of others.

P.S I think Bryce is a much better choice. She will do well.

  • Irene

I was extremely disappointed to see the change in actresses.
Rachelle was perfect as Victoria for me, she had it all the wildness, sly smile and sassy comeon’s. She also did great interviews and showed real excitement for all the projects. What energy!
I have not seen Bryce work but to me her look is more fairy princess and sugar. I can’t help thinking “Daddy Ron” helped her.
I will see the movies anyway but am certainly not happy in the change and will not be so excited to see the movies as I once was.

  • Chelle

Not that this observation matters (and I know nothing about the entertainment industry), I wonder if Barnye’s Version (was that the title of the other movie?) ever considered dropping Rachelle and recasting her part due to her prior commitment to Eclipse? Because Summit sure was so quick in dropping her like a hot potato.

  • Rori

I really hate it when people get re-casted for sequels, it seriously bugs me…BUT in this case there is nothing we can do. Unfortunately Rachelle has been recast and we can’t change that. I say all of us need to have a positive attitude and hope Bryce Dallas Howard can be as good, if not better, then Rachelle was. I am so sad Rachelle is not playing Victoria anymore but lets all be positive and hope it all works out in the end. :-)

  • Jen

I am extremely disappointed that Rachelle got axed! Hers was the last image we saw in Twilight..walking down the stairs.Like everyone has commented her role was minimal yet important in Twilight.Having seen the movie way before I got hooked on the books she is the only Victoria I pictured, whether or not I thought she is menacing enough she was perfect for the role.
It seems to me that the whole of Eclipse is about her, and protecting Bella from her, and it is extremely unfortunate that we will be watching a new actress portray her…Almost like a new vampire trying to get Bella..may as well be one!Interesting has Stephanie Myers commented on this casting change?
I get that you are comfortable with the change and we will never know what really transpired, between the studio and her people, we do not have to like it.

  • emmy

How can you possibly know if Rachelle wouldn’t have been menacing enough for Eclipse? She didn’t have a big part at all in Twilight, and she was directed to act, look, be the way she was in that movie by Catherine Hardwick. She’s a good actress and they can make her look anyway they want with makeup, hair, clothing, etc. Don’t blame Rachelle if you thought she looked too “soft.” I have no idea what you mean by “her eyes weren’t right.”

She is being treated unfairly and heartlessly by Summit and some Twilight fans. There’s nothing “blessing in disguise” about her being so coldly recast.

I am stating my opinions just as you all have stated yours.

  • darlenecullen

OH COME ON! This change is not for the better. Rachelle was a GREAT Victoria. Summit is just covering their a–.She was great in that role, and we all know it. Change for the better? I don’t think so! I would love to hear what Robert and Kristen feel about this.

  • guest
