TA TALKS BACK: THE HYSTERIA THAT SURROUNDS TWILIGHT
TA Fan Jennifer talks about the hysteria that surrounds Twilight, and in particular Robert Pattinson:
I’m a Twilight fan. Before you read any further, I would like to point out that I, like most other Twilighters, am sane. I do not try to stalk the cast, I’m not lurking around any corners, my goal in life is not to meet the people who play Stephenie Meyer’s beloved characters. I do get excited when I see Twilight-related news, I did yell and clap the first time I saw the New Moon trailer, my books have a special place on the shelf, and I do own a poster that my husband is trying desperately to keep me from actually hanging.I love most things pertaining to Twilight. What I don’t love is the other stuff.
By the other stuff, I mean the ridiculousness that has become the obsession with the cast. Particularly Robert Pattinson. Now, to be clear, I follow some of the cast members on Twitter. This does not mean that I search for maps of their homes or plot out ways to “bump into them” when they are out and about. (This is made easier because I doubt they visit NC much, but still.)
So why is it that some Twilight “fans”, and I use the term loosely, seem to think that it is ok to accost Robert Pattinson? In what other realm of American society is it acceptable to essentially stalk another human being? Besides that, what is it that these crazed fans expect to happen? Do you think that your eyes will meet his and he will fall deeply and insanely in love with you? Do you think that you can slip him your number and you will become the best of friends? News flash, crazies: None of that is going to happen.
The most you can or should say to him is something along these lines:
“Thank you for bringing our beloved characters to life on the silver screen.”
“I really enjoyed your work in Twilight.”Or even…
“I think that you are absolutely beautiful.” This one should NOT be followed by any attempt to touch him. Perhaps a quick smile and then turn to leave.
Rob seems really scared lately, and rightfully so. We’ve seen what the obsession with celebrity did to Princess Diana via the paparazzi. Even if it doesn’t get to that point, those of us who are true Twilighters don’t want to see him become a recluse. (Although at this point, I wouldn’t fault him any for going that route.) Those Twilighters who are paying to go to sanctioned cast events would love to get the chance to meet the cast in a controlled situation, but the behavior of the insane faux Twi-Hards keeps those of us who know how to behave from having these opportunities.
So here’s the deal, people.
Back off. Leave him alone. Stop stalking him. Falling back on the “obsessed females just can’t be controlled” excuse just infuriates the rest of us who do know how to behave.
Has anyone heard of the Patriot Guard? They are a motorcycle group who go around protecting families of fallen soldiers whose funerals are protested by the crazy followers of Fred Phelps. Its starting to look like Rob might need a group of protectors himself. His bodyguards may not be able to smack a 19 year old female attacker, but I have the sneaking suspicion that there are more than a few of us true Twilighters who aren’t above throwing an elbow or two. No further intrusion into his life necessary, just real life superheroes waiting in the wings to thwart that which threatens he who brings Edward to life. This will probably never happen, as Summit employs a large team of burly men to protect Rob. So until we’re called into action…just leave him alone.
Talk Back to us….what do you think?
