TA TALKS BACK: THE HYSTERIA THAT SURROUNDS TWILIGHT

Posted July 6th, 2009 By: flick 70 Comments »

TA Fan Jennifer talks about the hysteria that surrounds Twilight, and in particular Robert Pattinson:

The Hysteria that surrounds Twilight by Jennifer.

I’m a Twilight fan. Before you read any further, I would like to point out that I, like most other Twilighters, am sane. I do not try to stalk the cast, I’m not lurking around any corners, my goal in life is not to meet the people who play Stephenie Meyer’s beloved characters. I do get excited when I see Twilight-related news, I did yell and clap the first time I saw the New Moon trailer, my books have a special place on the shelf, and I do own a poster that my husband is trying desperately to keep me from actually hanging.

I love most things pertaining to Twilight. What I don’t love is the other stuff.

By the other stuff, I mean the ridiculousness that has become the obsession with the cast. Particularly Robert Pattinson. Now, to be clear, I follow some of the cast members on Twitter. This does not mean that I search for maps of their homes or plot out ways to “bump into them” when they are out and about. (This is made easier because I doubt they visit NC much, but still.)

So why is it that some Twilight “fans”, and I use the term loosely, seem to think that it is ok to accost Robert Pattinson? In what other realm of American society is it acceptable to essentially stalk another human being? Besides that, what is it that these crazed fans expect to happen? Do you think that your eyes will meet his and he will fall deeply and insanely in love with you? Do you think that you can slip him your number and you will become the best of friends? News flash, crazies: None of that is going to happen.

The most you can or should say to him is something along these lines:
“Thank you for bringing our beloved characters to life on the silver screen.”
“I really enjoyed your work in Twilight.”

Or even…

“I think that you are absolutely beautiful.” This one should NOT be followed by any attempt to touch him. Perhaps a quick smile and then turn to leave.

Rob seems really scared lately, and rightfully so. We’ve seen what the obsession with celebrity did to Princess Diana via the paparazzi. Even if it doesn’t get to that point, those of us who are true Twilighters don’t want to see him become a recluse. (Although at this point, I wouldn’t fault him any for going that route.) Those Twilighters who are paying to go to sanctioned cast events would love to get the chance to meet the cast in a controlled situation, but the behavior of the insane faux Twi-Hards keeps those of us who know how to behave from having these opportunities.

So here’s the deal, people.

Back off. Leave him alone. Stop stalking him. Falling back on the “obsessed females just can’t be controlled” excuse just infuriates the rest of us who do know how to behave.

Has anyone heard of the Patriot Guard? They are a motorcycle group who go around protecting families of fallen soldiers whose funerals are protested by the crazy followers of Fred Phelps. Its starting to look like Rob might need a group of protectors himself. His bodyguards may not be able to smack a 19 year old female attacker, but I have the sneaking suspicion that there are more than a few of us true Twilighters who aren’t above throwing an elbow or two. No further intrusion into his life necessary, just real life superheroes waiting in the wings to thwart that which threatens he who brings Edward to life. This will probably never happen, as Summit employs a large team of burly men to protect Rob. So until we’re called into action…just leave him alone.

Talk Back to us….what do you think?

    totally agree.

  • Cori

I totally agree! Finally someone said what everyone is feeling. Let them live their life and if you are lucky enough to meet them, don’t make an @ss out of yourself by freaking out. Take your picture or autograph and be on your way. He seems like a very humble person, so we don’t want him turning to his fans and saying that there psychotic and can’t control themselves. He’s just human, it’s okay to breath when he’s around. He’s a great actor, enjoy his work and let him be. Well said Jennifer i’m glad it’s out in the open…

  • Jennifer M

I don’t think anyone anywhere could have said it any better.

  • sioux

I totally agree..he is a human being and has a right to his privacy and respect. There is no respect amongst these fans. Understandably he is scared… so would you be with a horde of females rushing at you!! If you are a true fan…admire him and respect him..but don’t stalk him.

  • darlenecullen

The idea that Jennifer had is great. Maybe us sane Twihards,SHOULD get together and protect Rob from the crazies.I too live less than an hour from the city and I stay home looking at him on my special Rob sites. But maybe wherever he is, that group of us, that’s near him, should be called in as Robs own vigilante’s to protect him.Believe me,I would have NO problem knocking down or pushing some annoying, sicko, girl, pulling at his neck or clothes,or whatever else they’re grabbing at.ARGGGGGGGGG,DON”T WORRY ROB

  • jessica

i agree completely. i know that a lot of the stalkers who haunt rob haven’t even read the books, but just saw the movie and are obsessed with rob’s looks. are they forgetting that the books started it all? i agree with what jennifer said about “fans” – that’s what the creepy stalkers claim to be, but they really just want the autograph of a sexy actor from a popular movie. well said jennifer!

  • TinaOh

The crazy people who do run after that poor man, need to seek help. When you are stalking, chasing ect.. ask yourself, besides scaring the crap out of him, what do you hope to accopmlish? Like Jennifer said, do you think youR eyes will meet, and he will stop, and sweep you into his arms?!? Go look in a mirror and scream your head off, and then maybe you will see why he runs as fast as he can. BACK OFF & GROW UP.

As far as magazines, I will only buy cetain ones now. If any of the pics, of any of the stars, look like they were not happy to be photographed, I will not buy it. The only way the paprazzi will stop. is if WE don’t buy it!!!!!
ok I am off my soap box now!! :)

Jennifer great article, you have written what we have all been saying here on TA for long time especially about Rob, we were ALL outraged and disgusted when he was accosted by the “crazies” in NY, we were all appalled that he was hit by a cab trying to get away from the “crazies” even though Summit was trying to down play it, he did get hurt. How many more times do we all have to write these articles here it is not getting through to the people it should… THE SCREAMING MEDIEVAL CRAZIES, AHHHHHHHHHHH…….. What to do??? How to get through to the crazies???
I am always embarrassed when I see photos and Rob being mobbed and Video of him being chased because we are all getting pigeon holed, I do not want to be associated with the screamers the stalkers and the chasers.
I am absolutely 100% besotted with Rob BUT I would never even if I were in the same town as him ever stalk him chase or scream at him I would though admire from afar ,just to see him is real life even across the street would be enough because as everyone here knows. LEAVE HIM ALONE and give him privacy. I have often thought about what would I say to him if I ever met him in an “organised situation” “ I love you” would just sound stupid and cheesy, lol. Who really knows what one would really say, it would depend on the situation. I would be too scared to make a fool of myself if I said too much , then I would not want to stare at him either that would creep him out as well. So don’t know, I’ll keep dreaming . Ah well never going to happen anyway I am across the Ocean so … I will squeal, stare, and drool just looking at his photos on the computer screen, and in movies.
I also hope that things don’t get too much for him and he withdraws from acting he is an outstanding and brilliant artist- actor- musician and to have that go to waste would be a shame.
We want him around for a long time , but happy and healthy so again I stress to his management team look him.
And to all the screamers, chasers and stalkers together with the medieval mob- BACK OFF PEOPLE.

Jennifer .Please do hang that poster, in your closet, that’s were mine is along with a few other photos of Rob. Rob’s beautiful face greets my Husband every morning when he get a shirt out for work, then poor Hubby looks at 10 photos of Rob on the fridge when he gets his milk out for his morning coffee, I have even bought photo frames put Rob in them to blend in with the Family photos, but poor suffering Hubby knows, he knows, LOL. Jenifer go on hang that poster .

  • Debbie (BzNYLady)

Bravo Jennifer. Couldn’t have said it better myself. Like you and the rest of the people here, I just wish these people who dare to call themselves a “fan” and “claim” to adore him would actually SEE what they are doing to him when they act this way. There’s a time and place for everything, and while someone is working (or trying to) OR out on his own personal time IS NOT THE TIME to do it! PLEASE SHOW SOME RESPECT and give the guy some space to breathe and just be himself!

  • Judy

I cannot imagine any true fan who would not agree with all Jennifer has said. I, like Chelle, have Twilight shirts and items, and my daughter calls me obsessed, but I would never disrepect any of the actors by infringing on their right to privacy and space. I want their experiences with Twilight to be wonderful memories, not full of fear and regret! I am going to Forks and touring the area, and it would be great if some of the cast would be there at that time, which I doubt, but I would not want to approach them in an uncontrolled situation so as to give them cause for alarm. Besides, folks these actors are not really Edward & Bella, etc. just actors bringing them to life for us as Jennifer said. Be grateful for that, but do not confuse them for the real thing. The story is fiction, even if the emotions, etc. exist, or can exist in reality. Thankfully, no vampires and such, but the romance is wonderful and something we might all want to see in our lives, but we do not obtain it by stalking innocent “strangers” which they virtually are. Transfer that interest (hopefully less wildly) to the one you care for or who cares for you. Leave the actors to live their lives. Try putting yourself in their place and maybe you could understand their feelings. Sign me -
    Another true Twilight fan!

  • Kaitlyn

THANK YOU! I totally agree. I’ve seen tons of magazines about this stuff happening to the cast (mostly Robert), wow…it’s ridiculous! Thank you for saying something, I think that if the cast has seen this, or if they will, they’ll appreciate it alot.

  • bwen

Way to go Jennifer, and well articulated. You have said what a lot of us have been thinking, or posting on other web sites. Unfortunately the crazies out there do not recognize themselves for what they are.

Plus, has the craziness just been heighten because NYC is so easily accessible.
It seemed to me that when they were filming New Moon that even though some people did travel to British Columbia, it was not in the droves that seem to be happening in NYC.
Granted the Paparazzi were bad in B.C. but not the fans as much. Except for those that came from elsewhere and seemed to think Rob and the cast were a tourist attraction, the locals were pretty cool about it all.
So what has stirred the pot in NYC, is it the heat and the close confines of the set to public places?
It just seems scary that someone’s (Rob’s) physical and mental well being can be a jeopardy on a daily basis. I hope this doesn’t happen in B.C. in August when they are filming Eclipse. Perhaps the Mounties will help again with security, it just seems so lame and abnormal to stalk these young actors.

  • Aisllinn

I completely and absolutely agree with every issue mentioned in this article. I just have one thing to say:

Why is no one stalking Taylor Lautner?!?!?!? HE IS SO MUCH HOTTER!!!! And hes got ABS!!!!!!

    Just pointing it out. ;P

  • jtrs98

I am in complete agreement. I like Jennifer own Twilight merchandise and have been a faithful follower of Twilight since I discovered it. I am thrilled that these actors have brought these wonderful characters to life, but that is where I believe it should end. I have seen Twilight obsessed fans get out of control. I can’t blame Rob for freakin out, watching those girls go crazy would freak me out too. Jennifer I’m with you in that some of them could use an elbow or two so they don’t ruin it for the rest of us.

  • christina391

i agree with jennifer especially about these fans having jobs and school and for the teenage girls where are the parents? Do they not know what thier children are doing. Just leave rob alone i would really like to see more of his work but that isnt going to happen if crazed fans cant control themselves.

  • diana

BRAVO!!!! VERY WELL SAID!!!!APPLAUSE!!!!!I TOTALLY AGREE WITH JENNIFER!!!!

  • XOKatrinaOX

I agree completely, some people are just freakin crazy. They literally DO stalk the cast, I am an obssessed Twilighter, trust me on that, but I don’t go on Facebook and look for Taylor Lautner’s profile, no matter how hot he is, without the extensions of course. I own all of the books, and plenty posters but i wouldn’t spend tons of money just to fly to the set of new moon and act like i should be in an aslyum!
    Nicely said jennifer.

  • Autumn

I totally agree. Maybe some of the real fans should start banding together and start keeping the crazy’s away from the cast and most especially poor Rob. They are all still normal people who deserve privacy and space.

  • erios

amen to that sister some of these twilighter “fans” are going so over board and it is not nessucary (cnt spell)

  • Gaye

    Hear, hear Jen!
