TA TALKS BACK: ‘THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON’ MOVIE REVIEW BY KARA

Posted November 20th, 2009 By: Team Switzerland 13 Comments »

In today’s installment of TA Talks Back, I (Kara/Team Switzerland) give you my very long (though I prefer to use the term thorough ;) ) review of The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Since today’s the day we’ve all been waiting for, we want to hear your reviews too so make sure to post your thoughts in the comment box below. Be warned, there are several spoilers within my review, so if you haven’t seen the film you may not want to read on!

The Twilight Saga: New Moon Movie Review By: Kara

The Twilight Saga: New Moon officially hits theaters tomorrow and I expect a whole wave of new Team Jacob fans to be revealing themselves soon. From the acting and the effects to the dialogue and the music, New Moon is in a different league than its predecessor. Whether New Moon is your favorite or even least favorite book in the saga, I predict even the purest of fans will be nothing less than thrilled with the film adaptation.

Acting

• Kristen Stewart absolutely shines in the film. Her pain is so real and tangible that it’s easy to identify with her character and you are left rooting for her throughout her pain and self-discovery.

• Though he’s not in much of the film, Robert Pattinson is a definite standout as Edward. His deliverance of the lines in the infamous breakup scene is so hurtful and believable that you feel the pain right alongside Bella.

• Taylor Lautner: Of the three leads, I saved the best for last. Taylor is outstanding in the film and will definitely have you wavering toward Team Jacob. Aside from Twilight, this is the first time I’ve gotten to see Taylor act (Sharkboy and Lavagirl isn’t really my thing). While his few lines in Twilight seemed a little young and forced, all of that is gone by the time he speaks his first word in New Moon. Your heart breaks for him as he fights to make Bella realize that he is the better choice, but you also feel for him through his struggle of realizing ‘what he is’.

I agree, this was amazing. Kristen was absolutely brilliant! Taylor too, and Rob delivered his lines so effectively. I am still smiling and left the theater some time ago. The CGI stunning…Chris Weitz ROCKS!!

  • Jaclyn

    FANS LOVED THE MOVIE!!!

    But critics hated it!

They are Sexist and haven’t read the books!!!

I think we need to send them a BIG message.

After leaving the theater last night at 2:30AM, of three things I was certain.

First, Kristen Stewart can actually, genuinely act.

Second, Taylor Lautner was outstanding and made me feel like a pedophile (I’m 38).

Third, I am unconditionally and irrevocably forever Team Edward all the way!

Seriously, if Chris Weitz is not asked to return and direct Breaking Dawn; I will boycott every film that Summit makes (well, except for Remember Me!). The man GETS it, every bit of it! He was able to make me actually feel sorry for Jacob and get a real sense of his pain – something the books were unable to do. I was wavering just a bit in my diehard Team Edward stance; that was dashed during the last 10 seconds of the film though. LOVED IT! The comic relief was awesome; I actually felt sorry for poor Mike @ the movie theater. Poor guy looked so humiliated and I now have a new found love for Jessica. Anna Kendrick has got a bright future, her comedic timing is impeccable.

In comparison to the first movie; New Moon made Twilight look like an after-school special.

I am amazed and I plan to see the movie quite a few more times this weekend.

I FELT Bella’s pain. Seeing Edward break up with her once, and then watch Jacob do it again, makes it so much more real than in the book. It makes you understand it on such a deeper, more painful level.
I though Kristin LOOKED better and her acting was much better.
Taylor was amazing and it was so nice to see some emotion from Edward that was seriously lacking from Twilight. If you had read the books (which I know we all have), it was so easy to identify the unimaginable pain on Edwards face when he kissed Bella on the head for the last time.
I was sad that it missed the little details (like why Alice couldn’t call Edward) from the book, but completely understand why they were cut.

AND P.S. wasn’t Eric CRYING in Romeo and Juliet HILLARIOUS! haha

OK, I have to start this review by saying:
I F***ING LOVED THIS MOVIE AND CHRIS WEITZ IS A GENIUS!!!!! The acting of EVERYONE was fantastic. I truly felt every emotion that Kristen Stewart portrayed in Bella. Taylor Lautner was absolutely superb as Jacob. He made me almost lean in across the line to Team Jacob. But, I am a Twihard Team Edward gal. Robert Pattinson’s performance was truly mesmerizing. The fx was sensational. It made me laugh. It made me cry. (Bella nightmare screams) And it was amazing how much it was like I had envisioned it being as I read the book. And did I mention that
I F***ING LOVED THIS MOVIE AND CHRIS WEITZ IS A GENIUS!!!!!

I just saw the movie and it exceeded my expectations, and I was expecting it to be great. The trailers didn’t even begin to capture the emotion and motion of the film. The acting was wonderful. This production made Twilight seem like a home movie. Well done to Chris Weitz and all the wonderful actors and crew.

i have to say i loved it..there was something off about it but i think it just the pain that you see bella go through because your going through it with her..but over all it was awesome chris weitz and all the actors did a great job..i cant wait to see it again this weekend and then when the dvd comes out watch it again and again

I (as well as every single person I know/have talked to personally)am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO impressed w/this movie. I’ve seen it twice already (once at midnight, and again at 11:00 this morning) and literally the ONLY thing I can complain about AT ALL is the Bella being a vampire vision… it just seemed really cheesey, and much more like a dream than an actual vision of the future. but that is being incredibly nitpicky, and I positively LOVED everything else about the movie- literally not a single other thing that I thought could have been done better, imo (and my friends/aquaintances agreed w/me). the movie stayed SO true to the book, and any/all changes that were made seemed completely appropriate and fit in perfectly to make a better movie while still keeping the essence of the book exactly. seriously, i fully believe Chris Weitz deserves an award for the way he adapted the movie; it was truly amazing and just- i dont have words, he was just SO good at knowing how to stay completely true to the book while still making an incredible movie w/a good flow and pace, etc. and as for the important lines he left out that many ppl have mentioned–honestly, when you REALLY think about it, there just would not have been any way to keep them from being cheesey on screen, as much as they sound perfect in our heads when reading the book (case in point: the lion and lamb line in Twilight). I think it was a real showcase of his ability and talent that he was able to distinguish the cheesey-sounding lines from the non-cheesey ones, and kept in pretty much every single important, non-cheesey line that he could, in a very artful way. and of course all the acting, cgi, fight sequences- just incredible. I was blown away by all those things, thought they were amazing and perfect and just could not be better. I couldn’t believe how much Taylor made me sympathize w/Jacob, considering I’m Team Edward all the way and never sympathized w/him much in the book. not saying he changed my allegiances, but he definitely made me question them a little, which is amazing considering i’ve never b4 felt even the slightest waver in my Edward devotion. and kristen-simply amazing in every way as Bella. And Rob-perfection, of course. the break up scene had practically the whole theater sobbing both times I saw it (including myself for sure). and the few bits they added of Edward- perfectly done, I LOVED them, they were just the right amount to surprise me and be meaningful but not actually change the story at all, and the Edward “visions” were handled beautifully as well. and the ending… don’t even get me started on that. beautiful. perfect. shocking in all the right ways. I have to admit that ending caught me totally unawares (I knew there was gonna be a proposal, but i didn’t know when/where, and i certainly wasn’t expecting it when it came), and i could not be happier w/it. and you could tell the whole theater felt that way, as there was a collective gasp followed by a roar of applause both times i saw it. ummm ok i think my review was almost as long as yours, kara, and probably could have been summarized into simply: Chris did a beautiful job, i couldn’t be happier, the movie was as near to perfect as any adaptation could possibly ever hope to be, and Weitz NEEDS to come back for Breaking Dawn. I LOVE him so much-my only regret is that he didn’t do Twilight or Eclipse. David Slade sure has a lot to live up to (and honestly, I have a feeling he won’t, but he could surprise me, I suppose). sorry about this novel-length comment, but I’m just so excited I had to get it all out there b4 i went to sleep (i only got 2 hrs of sleep last night, so i’m gonna crash hard, but I just HAD to let SOMEBODY know how pleased i was b4 i could rest) :)

READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!! (spoilers)

OMG I LOVED IT!!! the effects were awesome and i especially loved it when the painting came to life in that flash-backy way. and aro goes and kills the guy and all Carlisle has to do is turn his face away and it totally shows you how frightened and horrified he is about all that. and talking to bella in his office – he was just so naturally modest about it all and it made me feel sorry for him :(
i LOVED Aro – he was soooo creepy but it was awesome! he’s just so nice, but he’s not, and its really creepy! (cant wait to see him and carlisle in breaking dawn!!!)
i was really touched by the end too: there’s just so much PAIN involved! i couldnt help feeling sorry for jake and angry at bella when she said “it’ll always be him.” but i also felt sorry for Edward when even Carlisle agreed to turn Bella. “why are you doing this to me?” he says – oh, poor Edward!!!
Alice was awesome too! she had some awesome lines and some awesome acting. i loved the voice-over emails to alice. and how after writing about 30 bella writes: “Alice, I wish i knew your real address.”
but i was a bit disappointed they had NONE of Esme’s reaction to the whole edward-going-to-kill-himself thing, like in the book when she’s waiting outside and hugs them all and says “don’t EVER do that to me again.” also in the end scene she was a bit statuesque – it was kind of offputting, but i guess it was because of the papercut incident earlier.

anyways, i still LOVED it – soo seeing it again! – and i can’t wait for eclipse!! :)

This review is written by a slightly cynical women in her late 20s who was very scared to see the movie after reading the critics’ reviews. I LOVED IT! Really, everything was so much better than I expected and LEAGUES above Twilight in every way (except wardrobe and makeup). There were certainly things I could nitpick about, and some slightly cringe-worthy moments I have come to expect from this franchise, but overall, this movie was a remarkably faithful adaptation of the book. It also did something the book did not do for me–made me actually question my staunch Team Edward stance. This movie was most definitely made for fans of the books and that shines through. The critics got this very wrong. So now, I think we should put pressure on Summitt to BRING BACK WEITZ FOR BREAKING DAWN. Who’s with me?

Also, do not forget to go see this again and again! Our dollars may mean better budgets and more promotion for the upcoming Twilight films!

Ok, I’m going to try this again. The effin’site bounced my review off b/c it was “too busy”. And I had a really good thoughtful review! :(

I absolutely loved this movie. It is better than Twilight. Chris Weitz kept true to the book. The only things I could have wanted was Edward confessing to Bella about lying to her with the “blackest kind of blasphemy” and Bella’s epiphany about Edward’s love for her. I was absolutely tickled pink with the opening “dream mirror” scene and was pleasently surprised the entire movie. My heart ripped when I saw Edward’s pain upon telling Bella good-by. I wanted to tell him “Don’t do that. There has to be another way.” I was dizzily impressed with Bella’s sense of shock afterward. The feeling of emptyness in the months after was impressive with the window display. I adored the attempted communication with Alice. This wasn’t done in the book, so this made her depression and pain so palpable on screen.

The wolf pack was impressive. Both the human and animal component. Absolutely magical. The I jumped in fright @ the fight with Jacob and Paul and again when they took out Laurent. Completely stunning. I’m looking forward to the battle in Eclipse.

The humans lent such comic relief. Eric crying @ Romeo and Juliet. :D
Jessica’s babbling to Bella’s silence. The movie theater scene with Mike, Bella and Jacob is priceless. I’m so glad that Taylor and Kristen and Mike all lobbied for that scene in the movie.

I know the Cullens were minimal (besides Edward’s) in this story but there were two shining moments which stand out. One is Carlisle’s discussion with Bella while stitching, about the soul of a particular vampire. The other is Rosalie’s explanation while voting on Bella’s request.

Chris Weitz has done a masterful job of presenting us with a phenominal movie. I hope he feels that he’s redeemed himself in the movie industry with this submission. I don’t believe that this story could have been told any better than what we’ve seen on the big screen this week-end. Well done, Mr. Weitz, well done! Now, let me know if there is any petition for Chris to helm “Breaking Dawn”. I will sign it with a flourish.

This movie was FANTASTIC !!! Chris Weitz has my utmost respect. The acting was suberb. The wolves were great. I always loved Kristen and there is no doubt she SHINES in this movie. In the rain scene with Jacob “breaking up with her” – she was just so believeably devastated …. and Taylor is so good at heartwrenching. Taylor was soooooo great as Jake. PERFECT. Rob delivered at being emotionally tortured, and so mean leaving her I wanted to smack him! I admit I cried a few times. The whole movie just felt real. Like the book feels real when your reading it. I hope Chris does Breaking Dawn too. He def gets it. I love how true to the book he was, and the things he changed/added were things that worked beautifully.

I have one question….what does Jake say to Bella in the kitchen when they almost kiss right before he answers the phone….?? I saw the movie twice and I couldn’t catch it?

Honestly I should have waited to see New Moon; I’m a big fan of the books and obviously did not expect the movie to be as good as the book; But the constant screaming was driving me crazy. I’ll have to see the movie again. Every time Edward or Jacob was on the screen, I heard nothing they said. Jacob shirtless is a beautiful sight without doubt but my experience was a not the best one. The movie seemed not to flow as well as Twilight did, maybe because I heard no dialogue throughout. It just seemed like a bunch of scenes put together. I read somewhere a critic called the wolves jerky, but that’s how the movie seemed to me. I quite enjoyed the wolves actually, no nonsense just like in the book. What I did hear was good. I enjoyed Charlie, I missed Billy and Victoria was right on. Bella was so convincing that she made me hurt for her. I’m on Team Jacob though I know how it all works out. I also thought the movie was a bit too bright, not enough rain. First viewing I’d give it a B-, don’t hate me :-)
