TA TALKS BACK: TO SEE PATTINSON’S FUTURE, LOOK A LITTLE FURTHER BACK

Ta fan Theresa has some comments on a recent article about Rob (read it here):

To See Pattinson’s Future, Look a Little Further Back

In this article about the challenges that will face Robert Pattinson as he moves along in his career through and beyond the Twilight films, the author makes several valid points. However, I think the biggest and most relevant parallel is staring right at us and he manages to dance right around it. The heart-throb-turned-superstar that Pattinson most resembles to me is not Orlando Bloom being held up by Johnny Depp, but the one and only Johnny Depp himself.

Reading the books, the image of Edward Cullen in my head is nearly identical to a young Johnny Depp; think 21 Jump Street with an Edward Scissorhands complexion. Before I saw the movie, I knew that if these books has been written 20 years earlier Depp would have been the only actor I could imagine playing Edward on the big screen. I worried about seeing the movie because I didn’t want my image of Edward to be destroyed, and waited until he was firmly planted in my imagination to see the film.

It’s not just that Johnny Depp is hot. We all know that, right? But for me, the genius of Johnny Depp is that he is so versatile, his face is so expressive, and he can look so different from moment to moment, character to character. And for me, that was the striking thing about Edward: the way he is described in the books, his expressions, the way he moves, his eyes all tell so much of how he’s feeling, and I worried that no actor would be able to capture that properly. No actor but a Johnny who, even in his still extreme talent and beauty, was no longer going to be cast as a 17 year old.

I was pleasantly surprised beyond expectations at how Robert Pattinson captured the Edward in my head and played him out on screen. My worries evaporated as he moved through the scenes, replicating the expressions I had seen in my mind, just on another face. Far from ruining my vision of Edward, he enhanced it, gave it life and depth, without breaking what was already there.

I’ve had a Johnny Depp poster hanging in my office for several years now. Helps take the edge off those stressful days, gives me something to stare at during meetings. When Johnny needed a friend, only one other would do. I expect to be adding to my Robert Pattinson collection for a long time.

Talk back to us….what do you think?

Theresa: I agree there is no comparison to Orlando Bloom. He is a pretty face, but I don’t see much else. I don’t mean to be mean to Bloom (?), but Johnny Depp is light years ahead of him. Depp definitely has a quality, a sort of deep-soul aura that is pretty scarce in Hollywood. I have never seen this quality from Bloom. I have seen it from Rob.

Admittedly, Cedric Diggory was not much of a test. A small part in a huge franchise, with the focus on others. But, ‘How To Be’ is just so wonderful, I can’t wait to see it again, and to own a copy. I am equally optimistic about ‘Little Ashes’. From Art in ‘How To Be’ to Salvador Dali to Edward Cullen. Three characters so different it is difficult to believe one person could portray them all with equal aplomb. But Rob does. I could be caught in a Twilight haze, but I don’t think so.

Yes, Rob seems to be on at least half or more of the entertainment magazines around, but I believe most of that is filler. I don’t see him conducting himself in the manner of some in the past. I believe he is the real deal. A real actor with talent. He has depth, passion and charisma. Frankly, my only worry is that he will get burned out from the relentless media microscope on his head. He seems to be a shy, gentle person, and I hope that doesn’t change with his circumstances. I would hate for him to “toughen up” in order to withstand the pressures.

Creamy , get of my head that’s exactly what I was going to say, thank you , now I don’t have to do so much typing. Rob has already proven he can do and will do great things in the future. I agree that Cedric was a small part in a blockbuster franchise, he was just starting out but he caught my eye back then (it was that gorgeous smile).

Bang on!!!! I Love Depp, and never expected to see another actor of depth and talent again but OMG Robert Pattinson is that man and I think even a little bit better. It is amazing the range he has displayed in his short career and the same can be said for his co-star.
But agree with creamy that my greatest fear is that Pattinson will withdraw because of the media and the overly aggressive fans. I hope he can find some happiness that does not become public property. Perhaps he can find that in his beloved London, or retreat back here to Canada where we have been know to allow the likes of Mick Jagger and such to walk the streets unmolested.

I love what you had to say about comparing him to Johnny Depp since I LOVE LOVE LOVE him and would never begrudge him his due. But it did take him quite a few years to get it. Let’s not forget he’s almost 45 years old and didn’t ALWAYS have the success he has now. He did things the right way and when he saw himself getting too Hollywood, he took a step back and molded his own career…

Johnny is brilliant and reminds me of Tom Hanks in that he completely encompasses his roles and makes me forget that he’s Tom Hanks or Johnny Depp and makes me believe in his character.

As for Orlando, I completely disagree. He hasn’t ONLY done those Pirates movies. Of course LOTR wasn’t much of an acting test for him. I mean really, all he had to do was stand their and look pretty…and boy did he ever do that! But clearly you have to give him huge credit for some of his other work. “Kingdom of Heaven” was a brilliant film and he was brilliant in it. His tortured Balian was so moving to watch. And of course in “Troy”, which I personally loved but didn’t do well in the box office, he was a perfect Prince Paris. In fact he was so good, I completely hated him by the end of the film! (Paris of course, never Orlando).

Here is what I hate to see happen to Rob that has definitely happened to Orlando: Overexposure. Which is already happening in spades! Rob is a great actor. Really great. He could be one of the greatest in time. But this Twilight thing is going to kill his career if he doesn’t take some control and get some of his privacy back.

From the \”older\” fan. I,too, have always loved Johnny Depp. I think Rob Pattinson is multi talented. I do not see his role in the Twilight
Saga typecasting him at all. I cannot imagine anyone as Edward but HIM.I think he is a very unique individual and unique looking, very Handsome. Just observe him in the Little Ashes trailers. I would love to see him in a good comedy and good musical. He is a very, very talented and special individual. : )

Amazingly, I still have more to say on this topic! I just wanted to agree with something Kerstin mentioned that I forgot to say.

And that is that one of the true tests of an actor is (again my opinion) is that as you are watching the film, do you feel/believe you are watching that actor or the character he or she is portraying? Do they lose themselves so completely, display such skill that you forget THEM! As I watch Twilight, I see Edward, not Rob. Yes he is handsome, but we were expecting that. In “How To Be”, was I watching Art, or Rob? No question, I saw only Art. For an actor with the already established power such as Rob, that is quite an accomplishment. Not many reach that point, ever. And he has done it already at age 22!!!

I’ve said it before, I just can’t wait to see all that he does in the future.

Theresa, Brilliant. I can’t agree more about comparing Rob with Johnny Depp (well, it’s kind of in the infant stages). Depp is the ultimate Actors actor. So very versatile. Rob is very similar and for those of us who love the heck out of him my fingers are crossed that he will indeed follow in Depps footsteps. More than anything this would be fulfilling for Rob. I hope he’s surrounded with people who will help him make the right choices and I look forward to seeing Rob in anything that he’s done past, present and future.

By the way, Orlando Bloom was never a great actor- he was just cute. Rob has the Depp, James Dean – persona downpat as it’s actually a brooding part of who he already is. Onward Rob! We’re with you!!

What Rob has that strikes me as particularly Deppish (rather than Bloomish is)…..::drumroll please::….

    Quirky intelligence.

What I mean by that is, neither Rob nor Depp were super-scholars who have multiple degrees after their names. In fact, neither one of them liked school much. But if you listen to interviews with Depp or Pattinson, you hear some markers of minds on fire: a layered, subtle wit, some allusions to works they’ve read or some other cultural work that they’ve encountered, a dark self-deprecating humor that it takes you a second or two to process, and some really interesting–and even bizarre–interpretations to add to the characters that the interviewer draws out of them. They make connections quickly in their thinking, and what comes out of their mouths is unexpected, shocking, poignant, and often funny.

Bloom, bless him, can be boyishly charming, but he has always lacked that slightly-off-the wall quality that marks true creative intelligence. That’s probably why, when you watch Orlando in a film, you notice certain patterns. He plays the same character, the same boxed-in character, in a variety of settings. Think about it: he plays the male ingenue, or the mentored male, who is always showed up by a slightly-more-interesting character who thrusts Bloom’s weaker character into the action. In the Pirates movies, Depp is his show-up male lead, in Lord of the Rings, Viggo Mortensen is his show-up male, in Troy, Eric Bana, a.k.a. Hector, is his show-up, and even in Elizabethtown, Kirsten Dunst plays his show-up female. Orlando follows these stronger characters around, reacting to what they do, but never takes the spotlight himself.

With Rob and Johnny, the only thing you can say that’s similar about the roles they play is that their characters are always interesting, and somehow slightly too strange to be human—but the characters are NEVER the same kind of strange. That’s why they get spotlighted.

Here’s to that quirky versatility. May it serve Rob well for a long, long time.

Team RCatz: What a jaw-dropping, wonderful description: “mind on fire.”

And to combine that with “quirky intelligence.” So right for Rob.

    Thank you.

At first I was thinking about comparisons of Rob with Leonardo DiCaprio, mostly due to the hype that Leo endured after Titanic. Even though I agree with creamy and others that Rob’s personality, intelligence and soul appears to be more like Johnny Depp – I was thinking to myself that I wanted Rob to hopefully experience the same level of success that Leo has had moving beyond the teen fandom and working with great directors and scripts. After hearing recently from Rob that he wants to do a film in Paris and loves to travel, I see him doing some Indie type films along with larger big-budget films mixed in . . . only time will tell.

I’m sorry, but no one can compare to Johnny Depp! I LOVE him!
