TA TALKS BACK: TO STICK TO THE BOOK, OR NOT TO, IS THAT REALLY THE QUESTION?

TA fan Oretha tells us why she thinks New Moon, the movie, will be great:

To stick to the book, or not to, is that really the question? By Oretha

It seems that this now is the most hotly debated topic amongst fans of the” Twilight Saga”. There are few key factors to remember when thinking about what is going on in the production and filing of the movie.

1- Adaptations need to be fit for screen. You cannot imply the power of the voice of someone. This is why according to Chris Weitz and Rob, Edward is an apparition.
2- Scenes to move along. We cannot have her mope for more than 4 minutes when they describe her desolation. We are just going to have to flow the passage of time in the scene.
3- The wolf looks like a real true wolf.
4- Stephanie Meyer has been over looking the filming. She has always said that she would be okay with an adaptation of a scene as long as it seemed like something that and I quote Ms Meyer from the DVD “was something that could have happened.”
5- We saw a sneak peak. I am sure that the final trailer will be a great deal more refined.

I say all the above to make a point that we often need to understand that sometimes what makes a great book, often does not transpose to screen. With that we must trust that the final product will be one that we can enjoy for the fact that it is a movie. We all have favorite scenes from the book. Some of them just cannot transpose. The other deal is that when looking at the sneak peak we saw you can see the entire tone has changed. It’s now a dark movie with dark intentions that is bereft of what one can think of as sweet.

Things that have already set the tone:

1- You are able to pick up in the desolation in the scenery by the lack of greenery in the meadow.
2- When you see the Cullen family they are all wearing Dark colors. This does not look like a birthday party. It looks like a funeral.
3- The tone in their voice s when they speak. Listen to Esme’s voice when she embraces Bella
4- Listen to menacing and deeply disturbing tone is Laurent’s
5- The pure lack of music. There is none which psychologically implies deafness to beauty and emotion.

These are the points which are turning me to believe that this movie will be great.

These are all very good points. I know the topic has perpetually been a debate, but I just keep reminding myself that I will love this NM movie no matter what. And I am basing this on the first trailer so far.

I agree the desolate mood is there, I can feel it by seeing the color scheme of the movie. I love how the meadow is void of life, it wasn’t described in too much detail in the book, but I wasn’t expecting it to look the same as it did in Twilight movie.

I love how the Cullens were standing at the party like statues, that’s how I picture them when I read.

I love the pics of the scenes in Italy, all the vibrant red color, even though that’s not how it was really in the book. The vibrant color red makes me think of the Volturi and their victims and devouring of blood in the undergrounds, at the same time representing the return of life within Bella and Edward.

Even if scenes are rearranged a bit, as long as it follows the basic root of the story, I’ll be happy. It’s just getting harder and harder waiting for this movie.

    I COMPLETELY AGREE!!!!!

Sorry, didn’t mean to shout, but these are the exact feelings I got when watching the teaser trailer. I am totally okay with them changing a scene to fit the movie. I have the ability to go see it for the movie it is, not the book adaptation. A book can never be made perfectly into a movie because EVERYONE has a different view of what happens and it is impossible to please everyone all the time. That’s why we have books. You want it done your way, read the book. You want to see what someone else thought of it, watch the movie!

  • Chris

I’m gonna love it no matter what. It’s our Cullen Family and wolfpack. You made some GREAT points.

Only one disagreement: I know wolves – that was not a convincing wolf. If it was convincing there wouldn’t be this much debate over it. My fingers are crossed that Summit will make a change, but after seeing the trailer in the theater my fingers are slowly uncrossing. =)

  • Chelle

Chris, you finally saw the trailer! woohoo!

Yeah I agree about the wolf, I forgot to mention that. They do need to make it a little more terrorizing… Summit, it’s not too late!!! Got 4 more months!!!

Okay, here are my thoughts for what they are worth. I just re-rented the movie “The Golden Compass” just because Chris directed it….if you look at the bear compared to the size of the human girl, there is quite a difference…this is is why I KNOW that Chris has it in him to make the WOLF look much bigger than Bella or Jacob as humans / compared to their human form. Also, it absolulely cannot be for lack of budget money…movies and tie-ins are making Summit a fortune.

I will be soooo disappointed if the effects are not incredible in New Moon. Catherine did the best she could I believe with the budget she was given, etc…after all, she gave us our beloved characters…I love them all, so if nothing else, she deserves kudos for Edward/Rob, etc.

CHRIS – I agree with you…I will love the movie no matter what. I’m a die hard fan and have been since the books came out and I’m in my 40′s. I was holding my breath during the entire trailer during the MTV awards…very exciting.

My 57 yr old cousin, also a die hard fan only has one minor complaint and you will all probably laugh or think it ridiculous…she really wanted the birthday cake to be PINK like in the book…ha! Alice made a big deal about all the decs being so “pink”. Don’t get me wrong, the cake in the movie was beautifully done.

very well said! although i was actually never worried about the movie! when people like these work for a movie like that i think that worrying is useless ;)

I agree with Chris & Chelle about the wolves hopefully being improved on. Lisa I have the Golden Compass DVD and recently watched it again and your right, Chris W has it in him to make that wolf huge and intimidating.
The biggest fault I have with Jake’s wolf is the color. It looks like he is shedding because of the two tone color on him. Actually color wise, that is not what I would call russet. I would think that coloring would be the easiest thing to get right, there are a lot of them so they all can’t look like they are shedding, please. Otherwise I’m going to love this film because I just will.

  • Chris

Chelle! Yes! It was playing before Transformers. I had NO idea but when I saw the Summit logo I braced myself. *sigh*

Marianne: Yes, the wolf color as well. It must be russet, not two toned. And his paws cannot be fluffy. Ugh… One of the fan made trailers is much closer to what I had in mind.

  • http://twilightersanonymous Marianne

Chris: was there some fist in the mouth action going on or did you let out that scream? Ha, Ha…so glad you got to see it. Wasn’t the sound good in it? Also that nice big Edward face.

I was just so impressed with the huge polar bears in the golden compass, especially when they were fighting, the sound, the life like movements were amazing. If you are reading these comments Mr.Weiss, please, please, it would just take a little tweeking no big deal I’m sure but it would make the wolves so much more impressive. Fix the color and slim down the puffy puppy paws.
If that’s russet, what must the chocolate brown look like?

  • Patrick

I like a lot of people know I’ll love the movie when I see it but i can’t help but wonder how many times I’m gonna be thinking that didnt happen or wait they forgot something. I firmly believe that any book to movie should be as close to the book as possible because any fan would be willing to sit through another 45 mins easy just to see it right and to have that little something extra we all want.
I know I’ll love it but i hope they don’t differ from the book too much like a lot of book to movie productions have making me dissapointed.
