TA TALKS BACK: WHY DO WE LOVE EDWARD CULLEN?
TA fan Shannon talks about the things she loves about Edward Cullen:
Yes, Robert Pattinson is gorgeous, but before we knew him as the incarnation of our favorite vampire, there is another Edward that most of us loved first. An Edward that chuckles, wears turtlenecks and even drives a different type of Volvo. In my opinion, book Edward is too light-hearted, but movie Edward comes off as too broody. Book Edward is quick to remind Bella time and again that she can and should leave him, and that he would completely understand. Movie Edward leaves me with the impression that he might have a problem with that. Ultimately, they are one and the same and both of them end up walking away from our heroine at the beginning of New Moon. Despite all this, we love them dearly, but why? What is it about this perpetually seventeen year-old vampire that has won the hearts of teens, mothers and grandmothers alike? Let’s take a look at some of (book and movie) Edward’s finer points:
1) He has impeccable manners. This boy knows how to use his words – and in a very gentlemanly fashion to boot. He knows how to open those doors too.
2) He’s not afraid to show his emotions. This might be due to the fact that he’s been emotionally dead inside for the past eighty years or so, but no matter. We like a guy that can show and tell us how he feels.
3) He’s protective. A lot of women today might feel threatened by a guy who tries to take care of her. I consider myself an independent woman too, but I like feeling secure and knowing that my Edward, um….excuse me, boyfriend, has got my back.
4) He loves his family. You can almost always trust a guy that’s tight with his family. Edward could feel resentful towards Carlisle for turning him, but instead he holds both Carlisle and Esme in very high esteem, considering them as parents. He even managed to welcome spoiled Rosalie into their coven over time. Not to mention that his relationship with Alice is downright cool. Their brother/sister-like banter cracks me up.
5) Okay, so he’s gorgeous. It’s certainly not the most appealing thing about him, but it doesn’t hurt, right?
So, what do you love about Edward Cullen?
Talk Back to us….what do you think?

Everything you listed, certainly. I also love that despite his superhuman abilities, his gorgeous face and body, and a life with almost no limits (time or otherwise), he is just about eaten alive with self-doubt. How endearing is that?
He has shown he can be arrogant (self-defense in my book.) He is extremely intelligent (medical school twice, Harvard, etc.) He is both musically talented and has an insatiable quest to discover new music, no matter the style. And, he has morals! No wonder Stephenie told us not to expect to find him!
How could we not love such a creature? Yes he can be overly protective at times, but who among us would not want to have the offering of such an undying, unlimited all-consuming love? To know you are not judged, but loved. More than anything else he brings to the table, that quality draws us to him.
He lives to be with Bella. With his vampire mind that can juggle many thoughts at once, he is always, always focused on her. Not to dominate, but to love. To protect. Not in a offensive, macho, cave-man way, but in a loving, I-want-to-share-my-life-with-you-way. He wants her to be happy. No matter the cost to him.
How could you NOT love him?
Hmmm… You just about sum it all up, I think… Maybe just one little thing - his eyes, smoldering and changing color. Ok, forget the reason why they change color, still a gorgeous thing
Me and my sister have had long conversations about this topic and have come to the conclusion that the reason we are all falling in love with Edward is because of how the book is written. Stephanie has very cleverly written the book in such a way that as you read from Bella’s perspective throughout the stories, especially as women / girls we can relate to the emotions she is feeling. I find it quite scary that i am so enthralled by these books, but with the passion that Bella feels for Edward it is hard not to develop some form of attatchment. So, Stephanie is an amazing writer who has created (although a fantasy based character) a man which all of us feel drawn to, he is quite simply the epitome of what alll women want in a man. Someone who is handsome, but unaware, brilliantly intelligent, but modest, dangerous but caring and protective to the limits and and above all he idolises her. Isnt that what we are all looking for? The fact that one actor has been able to achieve this even tho the film does not allow for the real scope of the book, is truly remarkable.
..and one more thing…I think he can be pretty witty at times!! Who doesn’t love a guy with a sense of humor? AND the fact that he will do ANYTHING (including leaving bella!!) no matter how much it hurts HIM, if he thinks it’s best for Bella. HE ASKED JACOB TO TELL HER TO HAVE HIS BABY FOR GOD’S SAKE!! ALl in the name of the selfless love he has for her. He is completely selfless when it comes to Bella. THAT is SOOO appealing!! And at the same time, he’ll kick some major a** if anyone hurts her!! So he’s not a wimp, he’s just all-around PERFECT!!!
I think all of those things are definitly what we love.
Also, you have to love his eyes. You have to love the gentleness he has, he could crush you without trying and yet he is so soft with Bella and always tries to make her happy.
Basically he is the vision of what every woman really wants. That is why we love him. He is sexy as hell too.
You all summed it all up! Any guy who can float his fingers on a piano like that and composes for his girl a lullaby?! Who wouldn’t fall for him?! Not to mention he is proof that a person’s origin does not have to define them or their future. Edward (with the rest of the Cullens of course)shows one can always go beyond what fate has laid out for them with the will to be a better person, i.e. not killing humans in spite of being a vampire.
And the biggest thing that got my attention while reading their story is the fact that in 80-something years he never fell for anyone until Bella comes along. What an impossibly romantic whirlwind that SM created, with that said, who wouldn’t fall madly in love with someone who’s been saving his true love for only one person for all eternity?
All of those reasons are good. And Stephanies writing has more to do with how I feel about the character than anything else. Edward is all in all perfect and there is no one like him living on this earth, believe me…now if men were to take notes on these qualities we would be falling all over them…lol
Yes, all of the above. Most of all, he is more than happy to hold Bella and watch her sleep–asking for nothing more than her safety.
Well, right from the beginning I knew why I fell in love with Edward. He just loved Bella soooooooooooooooooooooo much. JUST LOVED HER! Not just because she smelled good. That was at first. BUT JUST BECAUSE OF EVERYTHING. It didn’t matter ,when she was a b–ch to him,and she was sometimes. It didn’t matter, that she drove a junky truck,or had no money,or told him what to do ,most of the time. And the way she acted about having a birthday party given to her or presents give. To me,Bella was NOT NICE alot of the time, to put it mildly and yet, whatever made her happy is what Edward wanted. Even if he had to give her up! MY GOD, I LOVE YOU EDWARD CULLEN!!!!
I fell in love with Edward Cullen for all of those reasons, too. I also remember distinctly feeling my pulse race when:
-he would sing Bella to sleep with her lullaby
-in scenes where he would call her “love”. Guys these days don’t normally do that. You get “baby” and “babe”, but “love”? That’s a dated name that doesn’t really get used all that much.
-Hello? A guy that sneaks into your window to just HOLD YOU? OMG!
-I also have to agree with darlenecullen’s comment…Edward loves Bella so intensely that she is LITERALLY the most beautiful thing to him…she can think she is the most average and ordinary person in the world, and to Edward, she is anything BUT. That’s a love that women search for and dream about!
Twilight Mom Australia, not be confused with Twilight mom, I have seen a few Twilight moms just recently I am the Australia one…
I fell in love with Edward Cullen in the book, way before I saw the movie. (That Robert Pattinson plays him is a 100% bonus in my opinion……)
Back to the Edward Cullen in the book, I agree with all of you I fell in love with a fictional character and I am still in love…..with book Edward. You have said all I wanted to say add to list he also sparkles, now, who does that, no one.
How could anyone resist Edward? He is the perfect guy. Intelligent, sensitive, romantic, protective, sometimes too self sacrificing, funny… He lives to love Bella and would give her the world if she would let him, without asking more for himself than to spend time with her. I only wish that there more guys like him. Bella is so lucky.
wll eveyrhing you mentoned and he’s msucailly tlaend too and I’m in lvoe with rob pattison . for diferent reason. he makes a gret Edward
What DONT we love about Edward Cullen?!!!
Omg edelacruz, you couldn’t be more right, the name “love” everytime I read it I get all bubblely, but no one uses it these days so I guess it’ll come back evtually right.
And come on Ladies lets not forget one very important thing here, hes simplely… dazzling.
And he dazzles people for Bella and dosent pay them any attition like the girl in the resturant(Amber) and Mrs. Cope ect. I would idk but I would lolll
and hes loadeddddd, hahaha jkjk, that means nothing at all.
no lie.
But the whole playing the piano, makes me just melt!
I was talking with my mum about this and she asked me “Wouldn’t you just love a guy like Edward” to which I replied “Yes”. We spoke about the fact that their love is so strong and it’s a romance that isn’t seen these days.
I just love how she is his whole world. I loved reading the part in Eclipse where they visit Renee and she comments on how the way he watches her is as if he’s ready to jump in front of a bullet for her. The way they move together etc.
I just love the way he holds her hand, how he holds her, how he loves her blush. And of course how he sneaks in the window to hold her at night. I love the way he calls her Love. He’s so old fashioned.
I thought about that question as I have read through all the submissions. Some can ask themselves is it a crush or is it a desperate act to try to have the chemistry that is portrayed in the book. For as many times as I have read the books and watched the movie, you start to realize that maybe it is just a fairytale and no man out there possess all the qualities as Edward holds. Stephanie really puts her heart into the words and the story line to make the reader want more. I myself look for most of the qualities of what Edward holds in the book. I want the exciting life and the mystery of not knowing what is going to happen. The passion, the romance, and just the know that you are his number one. It couldn’t help when casting the role for Edward that not only did Robert Pattinson have the looks but had the want to portray what he thought the character felt in each step. As we all have used the quote, “I am still looking for my Edward to come sweep me off my feet, and have a happy ever after”
No matter how many times I tell myself that Edward is fictional, and how often I try to ignore the books that are piled on my nightstand (except when I am reading them nightly), I can’t stop hoping that someday I will find my soulmate and that he will feel as strongly about me as Edward feels about Bella. I think, above all else, I love Edward Cullen because of the hope his character inspires in me, and a few other people from the sound of it! Hope that there is truly someone out there to love as selflessly and passionately as they love each other.
