TA TALKS BACK: WORRIES FOR NEW MOON – THE MOVIE

Posted June 8th, 2009 By: flick 31 Comments »

For this edition of TA Talks Back, two TA fans write about their worries for New Moon the Movie:

By 4twilight4ever:

I’m obsessed, I’ll admit it. I will be eternally grateful for Stepehenie Meyer bringing such wonderful books to the world. I have read them so many times, I have lost count. When I heard Twilight was coming to the big screen, I was ecstatic. I loved Twilight! I can’t count how many times I have watched it. And I love how Catherine Harwicke and Melissa Rosenberg brought it to life… however I can’t help but feel like I got robbed. Why did it have to be so rushed and at times, awkward? There are so many beautiful moments between Edward and Bella that got left out. Watching the extended scenes on the dvd, I can’t help but wish the whole meadow scene would have been included. Ms. Hardwicke says she had to cut things out to keep the pace of the movie going, but as a fan, I would have gladly watched 20-30 minutes longer just to not miss out on key moments that help establish the relationship between Edward and Bella.

Now I am a little worried that New Moon will not hold up to my expectations. I totally admit that I want to see more of Edward even though he isn’t present a lot in the book. Being a total Team Edward fan, I couldn’t imagine only seeing Rob briefly in the beginning and for a short time in the end. I wholeheartedly hope that Edward’s feelings for Bella, page 514, are not an extended or deleted scene that I only get to see when the dvd is released.

Please let Chris Weitz bring a beautiful book to the big screen. I know everything can’t be included, but don’t leave us longing for the romantic times between Bella and Edward. I just hope and wish for it not to be rushed or hurried.

By Rose:

Alright so lately I’ve been hearing fans talking about how the director of New Moon “better stick to the book!”

Do you all remember what happened in New Moon? Because I do. Edward leaves Bella. He leaves her.

Though he is mentioned in the book he isn’t really there.

So this is my problem. Everyone for team Edward is complaining left and freaking right about how “Edward isn’t going to be in New Moon a lot”. Boo freaking hoo!

You want the man to stick to the book yet you want Edward in the movie more?
Did we read the same book?

Did I get a different copy of New Moon?

Now I hear that this director is planning on showing Edward when Bella hears his voice in the book. This kinda peeves me, I’ll be honest. It isn’t sticking to the book like I would want it to. I don’t hear ANYONE complaining about this except me even tho it isn’t sticking to the book.
The girls who complain about the director sticking to the book should look in the mirror because YOU as a fan of the BOOKS aren’t even sticking to the books.

All this for a cute face!

Talk Back to us….what do you think?

That pretty face is selling like stacks of hotcakes during breakfast time. Robert Pattinson is the fuel for this Twilight monster and Chris Weitz knows that. Yes, in the book after Edward leaves, all he is a an auditory hallucination, but it’s difficult to visually appease the fans with only a growling voice. I personally don’t mind that the director/screenwriter have taken the liberty to make Edward a visual hallucination; it won’t take away from the book or the movie.

  • Chris

The last commenter cracked me up. So here’s what I figured out. I’m Team Edward mostly. So I’m Team Edward 100% and Team Jacob 90%. Ok, Ok I know that doesn’t add up but so what. Sue me… ;)

Now, when I’m reading New Moon I’m ALL Team Jacob all the way – until we get to the end and Bella saves Edward (but I’m still bleeding profusely for Jake) and I feel that way through Eclipe and a lot of Breaking Dawn – I’m torn between Edward and Jacob. I can’t help it. I’m schizophrenic and so am I. Who could not be sucked into the emotion between Jacob and Bella? If Bella is heating up with Jake in her car and she knows that all she has to do is turn her head and kiss his shoulder and the rest would be history, how could *I* not respond to that? NOT DEAD OVER HERE. He’s so sweet and such a boy/man. He’s honest and abrupt and really doesn’t hold back. And he loves Bella….

Oh Stephenie. What have you done to us?

  • Chelle

Ok ok I shamely admit the second rant by Rose pertains to me too! Yes I want the movie to stick to the book, and yet I HAVE to see Edward onscreen too. I’m torn, don’t know where to put myself. I figure Dir. Weitz is making a compromise, or at least I hope he is, to satisfy both sides.

To me, personally, sticking to New Moon means getting enough of Jacob and Bella in there for the audience to feel that love developing between them, the hole in Bella’s heart, and the excruciatingly overwhelming reunion between Bella and Edward in the end (I do hope they get a lot heartfelt book dialogue in there between the two). I hope they make the hallucinations discreet enough in a way that we feel his absence. Guess we’ll just have to wait the 5 loooong months to see!

As much as we may dislike it, the studio is in the money making business and they have to play their cards, which includes a visible Robert Pattinson in the film =/ Yes millions of fans will be there to watch and support, but I’m sure they don’t want to take chances either by driving away audiences that were just interested in Twilight movie in the first place due to the cute vampire. I know a lot of people who still haven’t read the book (big loss on their part!) but loved the movie. Sorry, don’t burn me!

  • Chris

Whoa, can you say, “Stick to the topic?” I think I really veered. Sorry. heh

Yeah, lets stick to the book even if it means putting Edward on the back burner. It’s his own damn fault. No one told him to leave. I could wring his neck. It’s time to open the doors for Jake (I think I’m secretly in love with Jake *sigh*). It’s not a secret now. Wow, I’m one twisted person.

    Signed,
    Hopelessly in love with love

  • Angel

I am so on the same page with every1! I love Edward and yet my heart was screaming for Jacob in New Moon. I really want them to stick to the book but I agree they have to show a little more Edward to satisfy those screaming teens and moms! I heard that they wraped up in Italy? If so then where else are they shooting, or are they done? All I want for christmas is for New Moon to come out this summer! I cant waite that long!!!!! I dont care that I will be around 8-9 months pregnant, I will waite in line all day and camp over night to be one of the first to see that movie!!!! Please oh please make it come out this summer!!!!

  • Lexy C.

Okay, so I think everyone needs to stop worrying. New Moon is going to be a great film…Chris Weitz seems to have a handle on things…even the cast has been subtly hinting that they think this movie will blow the first one out of the water. As for concerns about Edward’s increased presence in the film…we’re just going to have to get used to that idea. It’s a film and there’s no way they’re going to make this movie without having Rob in it as much as they can. Honestly I don’t have a problem with it because when I was reading the book…during those scenes where Bella was imagining Edward’s voice…I was imagining him standing there with her, like a ghostly presence. So, it seems fitting to me that they’re taking it there. Trust me, if they do it right, having Bella feel that Edward is right there beside her will be just as effectively tormenting as having her imagine his voice.

  • Tasha

Alright, I’m with Rose. I loved Edward and all, but I want them to stick to the books. Sure I’d like to see Edward as an apparation when Bella hears him, but that didn’t really happen in the book. So as much as I’d love to see Edward, I don’t want to. It gives it more suspense because you have to wait to the end to see Edward again. Another thing worries me too, it’s that added Bella motorcycle scene that wasn’t in the book. I know Bella was doing dumb things to hear Edward’s voice, but she wasn’t that stupid to go off with some guy she doesn’t know on his bike. I really hope the movie sticks to the book as much as possible. I feel very territorial with New Moon, it’s my favorite book in the series. I hope they get it right.

  • melissa

edward is going to be like flittering like just an image that will last less then a second . i think its a good idea.

  • http://www.twilighting4vr.blogspot.com Alice Cullen’s Partner In Crime

Rose? SHUT YOUR PIEHOLE. Team Edward would appreciate it.

  • nicole

thanks rose. i really wish they would stick to the book. i am totally team jacob, but i understand why people would want more Edward, I just don’t get why they are the same ones saying to stick to the book. it’s one or the other and i would rather they stick more to the book because it’s jacob’s chance to shine. edward will get his chance again in Eclipse and again in BD if they choose to make it. jacob only gets one real chance to show that he’s the one and that’s while edward is gone. the effectiveness is ruined if edward is in the movie longer than intended. sticking to the book is better.

  • L§

Most of you people only like Robert Pattinson because he plays “Edward Cullen”… it’s repulsive….. I like him because he’s a talented musician.. and he’s normal.
I think Directors should stick to books.. but if you stick to a book too much… you will have a movie that is like.. 6 hours long and you can’t afford to make movies that way… you get what you are given…. deal with it… watch it or don’t…. stop complaining… suck it up….. like it or not! :)

  • Twilight Mom Australia

As a 100% Team Edward Fan….. Rose ….What Alice Cullen’s Partners in Crime said …. we would really appreciate…
Now, to New Moon sticking to the Book, blah blah blah… Book adaptation halloo…
Have we have heard it so often in the last few month from the cast members themselves that New Moon will be bigger, better etc : they are all excited, WELL SO AM I.. Of course we will see Edward!!! Bella is hearing him and he is with her all the time. Get use to it….like Lexy C said “ghostly presence…” …
We all have our hopes and fears about New Moon, but let’s trust Chris just a little bit and wait for November……

  • http://AnnaTheCreativeCastle.com Anna Bella

Ok, So I am Team Edward – No surprise there for those who know me.
I’ve got nothing against Jacob – I like his character and how he develops…
But I kind of imagined, as I read the book, that even tho Bella was “hearing” Edward in her head that she was also picturing his face.
So it’s not too far fetched to me that we will see Edward. I imagine it will not be him standing there in person or anything, but perhaps a dreamy half see-through version of him like she is fantasizing what he would say to her as she hears it in her head.
I think/hope that they are just going to be bringing her mental anguish into a visual form of Edward as well as audio (for our benefit since it is a movie) and won’t be straying from the essence of the book.
    Anna Bella

  • kerri

I am so tired of hearing people say, leave New moon as it is, dont fix what isnt broken, blah blah blah. Come on, now. We have to look at this from a cinematic point of view, not readers.

How would we all feel…honestly…when Bella hops on her motorcycle and we hear Robs american accent say, No Bella, dont, stop. Kind of a let down. So instead of hearing whats going on in Bellas mind, we get to see a two demensional, pissed off Edward, spit at Bella to cut the sh**. Im sorry for my potty mouth, but thats the impact visual Edward will have over voice Edward. I’d much rather see Bella argue with fake Edward verses hearing a boring line delivered from Rob. It will be that much more jolting when it happens.

  • Melissa

Is Rose looking to piss someone off, like ME?!

If you can’t say anything nice about Edward, don’t say anything at all! Man oh man…

  • Midori

Well, I agree with PrincessJen about Rob being a visual hallucination. He is there only when Bella hears his voice, other than being in the beginning and end of the movie. You have to give credit to Chris for coming up with that since majority of the fans were complaining that New Moon won’t have Rob in it. Also, he is trying to stick close as he can to the book. It seems like no matter what he does, he gets complaints. Chris is trying to satisfy us fans, yet stick close to the book. From what I hear from the cast on New Moon, we fans will definitely will not be disappointed. The glimpse of the first trailer, it looks like New Moon will be awesome movie..perhaps a step up from Twilight. As the sequels continue, I believe each movie will be greater than the prior with the climax in Breaking Dawn.

  • darlenecullen

As LexyC. said,I also visualized Edward’s face while Bella was hearing his voice.Didn’t you ever see the face of someone, while you’re hearing their voice in your head? And also, when Stephenie wrote the story, maybe she intended for us to visualize Edward’s face while Bella was hearing his voice.I sure did.So to me, that’s sticking to the book.

  • cullens4ever

Ok…so I get what Rose is trying to say, and believe me I do understand her, I’m a PROUD TEAM EDWARD. I think what people need to realize is..most movies that have been adapted from a book doesn’t usually follow what is written in the book…like sequencing of the scenes, what a certain scene looks like etc…BUT they have the same ending as the book (OF COURSE).

Why am I saying this because I think that Chris making Edward a visual hallucination rather than ONLY a auditory hallucination, is more..how do I say this…more fit for a MOVIE. Of course everyone wants to follow the book..but that is just not the case.

Of course the Twilight fans would understand the scenes where Bella hears Edward warning hear to say out of trouble, BUT what about other people who didn’t read the books but wants to see the movie.Chris put it there for them to understand it and to be visually entertaining fit for a MOVIE.

All I’m saying is that..I think people need to stop complaining that they should follow the books and just accept the fact that the Directors are doing the best that they can do for the movie in just a span of 2 hours.

  • Chelle

When reading NM for the first time, did anyone else think that Edward didn’t really leave, that he was just lurking in the shadows? I did, until of course Bella found herself to be Laurent’s last meal… anyway my point is, yes people want to stick to the book, but putting a visual image of Edward in there is to satisfy our imaginations, not solely to put Rob in the movie more. I do believe Rob himself said in one of his interviews that a mere voice over would not work very well, it will come up flat, and that’s one of the reasons they opted for the apparition.

I may be 100% team Edward, but I love Jacob too, and one of the reasons I loved NM (after reading it more than once) is that Edward’s absence was that defining testament to their undying love for each other and I do want to feel that absence, otherwise it won’t have the same effect. I’m just trusting that CW knows what he’s doing.

  • smilely

Hey i am smiley of i LOVE edward and jacob they are the BOMB lol
but i have not read all the books i have read number one and half of number two i know LAZY but i am not so good at reading.:)

  • BunnyMomRocks

I desperately want the second movie to be better than the first. The books are awesome and so many of the key moments between Bella and Edward were left out of the first movie. These moments are pivotal in the second movie to help explain why Bella is so distraught when Edward leaves her. So my idea is to keep to the second book as much as possible but have a series of flashbacks from the first book. This will give Robert Pattinson more screen time and also fill in all those gaps left by the first movie. It doesn’t stick to the second book but instead would draw from the first book. Admittedly I just really want them to reshoot the meadow scene – and get it right this time.

  • tracy

i have to agree with the post by Rose.

I’m going into the theater the same way i did with Twilight. I was just happy to see one of my favorite books come to life. I have faith in Chris Weitz and Taylor Lautner and Alex Meraz… (can you tell I’m on the wolves side?)

    :)

  • Alexandria

I agree with Rose. While I would love to see more of Edward in New Moon, it’s just not how it happens. He leaves her. He. Is. Gone! You can’t get the full, emotional, mind-blowing effect in the movie as you -or at least, I- got from book, if you keep placing Edward in it at random intervals. The audience needs to MISS him. Not see him every 15 minutes. I want the bittersweet reunion from the book – the reunion that brought me to tears.

  • Leanne

For all those sookin’ up about small differences between the book and the movie…bad luck..you dont always get everything you want.

Ie (if you wanted bella in a black jumper and shes in a blue one…..damn – get over it).

If Bella rides a bus and not a motorbike…..fine..sook up.

Moviemakers will do their best hey can to make the movie successful. THEY are the professionals – not us.

  • Nukite

I actually anticipated that Weitz would choose to show Edward as a hallucination; it’s the natural solution to the problem. Which brings me to my point – guys, quite apart from commercial considerations, I think we should all keep in mind that film is a different MEDIUM from writing; a totally different artistic as well as commercial proposition, with different demands. Taking a written story to the screen successfully will most often mean NOT following the story to the letter. It just isn’t a one-to-one mapping process; trust me if film-makers did that, we’d all be appalled and bored to death by the results. (First and foremost: a movie is watched in one sitting. A book is read at leisure over the course of days or weeks. Take a moment to appreciate what a huge difference that makes to the kind of story you are obliged to tell!)

Of course I don’t want changes that would mar the integrity of the story, but when it comes to details altered to convey it in this medium and at a suitable length for a movie, don’t sweat the small stuff. If Weitz has to choose between making a good film and a faithful film, I’d rather have a good film.

  • patty

the mvoies’ gonna be great and they are sticking the book but only also going bheind, which amek the mvoie even mroe awesome the the book. I am Team Edward but i tihk ti eistieial to ahve Jacob in there too and make suer to keep miprotantm ometns in there too. yeah i agree soem of the deleted scens such as the extended emadow scene and the biting the finger should have been in Twilight

  • britni

Ok everyone has to calm down I mean have you seen the photos and the trailer the have came out for us to view. i mean Chris Wietz is an Amazing Driector and we haave seen his previous work. If you saw New moon behind the scenes on Entertainment tonight you would know that chris has planned to put Edward in the movie as a hullcination therefore we will get to see him when originally we were only supposed to hear him (in the book)I think this is a major plus. And lets face it this book is mainly about the relationship between Jacob and bella so lets be happy with this. We all love Jacob so lets give him his shining moment in this book that he deserves. I mean Edward will come in eventually and lets face it the whole book series is about this insane love traingle so they had to fit the Bella/jacob moments in somehow. Overall I am so glad chris Weitz has directed this film (the trailer looks amazing and the cast is fantastic)Lets just sit back, relax, and await the NEw moon book come to life. afterall arent we all glad that they have actually turned this book SAGA into a movie (lets be happy anout that before we get all judgmental) I am sure that the movie will be FANTASTIC and more than we expected :D

    sincerely,

    Britni

    TEAM EJ(edward/Jacob)

  • softball hottie34

Ok as much as I want the movie to stick to the book I think it would be qutie interesting to have edward like right beside bella when she hears his voice!!! That would be soo kwel you can add alittle to the movie to make interesting but as long as he dosent got to far off track!! I Think that after she hears his voice then edward shouldnt be in the movie till the end the whole point of NM is for us to get bellas time with jacob!!! END OF STORY!!!!!!!

  • 4twilight4ever

I can see the point of view by Rose. However, in Twilight they brought the fight scene to life. We had only read about it, and had no details. With Bella writhing in pain in the book, we didn’t know how that played out, yet it had to be played out in the movie to make sense.

Edward’s voice when Bella hears it would be silly without visually seeing him, his facial expressions as Bella would imagine them.

  • TeamBoth

OK I want Chris Weitz to stick to the books just as much as the next girl, but I think the thing with Edward saying those things to Bella when she is in danger is cool! I mean come on, honestly, I think Chris is doing MUCH better than Catherine Hardwicke did, by judging from the TRAILER! I agree with the actors saying that New Moon will blow Twilight out of the water. But for all the little obsessive Edward fans saying they don’t want to see the movie or they want more Edward, GET OVER IT! Do you want Eclipse or not? Because if you not watching it makes New Moon bail, then its on you. Remember that. They probably wont not do Eclipse, but it just wont be as good All because you wanted more Edward, well I think Chris will incorporate more Edward, but still stick to the book as much as he can. People don’t just watch the Twilight movies because of Edward anyway! They watch them because they have read the books, they like Edward, they like Jacob, they like vampires, its not ALL centered around Edward!

  • monica

they need to stick to the book, but i dont mind them adding edward a little bit more but if they make major changes then it will ruin the rest of the movies.

i cannot believe they are taking out the marriage deal to keep it tween. its insane!!!!!! it will ruin the whole series. if they dont get married then they dont go on a honeymoon. and if they dont go on a honeymoon then renesmee wont be born. which means no breaking dawn. if they leave out the marriage i dont know if i want see it anymore.
