THE DAILY MAIL: KRISTEN STEWART TALKS JOAN JETT, ‘THE RUNAWAYS’

Posted June 17th, 2009 By: Team Switzerland 7 Comments »

The Daily Mail has a new interview with Twilight star Kristen Stewart, who is set to play rocker Joan Jett in the upcoming film The Runaways. In the new interview, Kristen discusses how she’s getting into character, and we even hear a bit from Joan Jett herself on what she thinks of Kristen portraying her on-screen:

Kristen said: ‘I’m just listening to her music all the time. I’m trying to just make myself aware of the time period and what she was going through.

‘It’s one of the most immense responsibilities to play a real person. Her story’s important. It’s an incredibly triumphant feminist story really.

‘She’s the first woman to ever start her own record label. So many people know her as just being like one of the coolest people to ever live. That in itself is one of the most intimidating things that I’ve ever had to confront but she’s so cool too.’

Joan is equally enthusiastic about Kristen: ‘When her hair is cut and with the right make-up, Kristen should make a really good me.

‘She sounded great and played well (on the guitar). She has the passion for it, which you can’t really be taught.’

The pair originally met over New Year’s to discuss the film before Kristen was formally cast in the role.

The film also stars former child actor Dakota Fanning, 15, as The Runways’s teenage frontwoman Cherie Currie, who was the same age as the actresss when the group formed.

Joan was just 17 when she formed rock group The Runways with Cherie, Sandy West, Micki Stelle and Lita Ford in 1975.

The group went on to enjoy several hits during their five years together including Cherry Bomb and Queens of Noise.

After the Runways split in 1979 in a row over money and management, Joan formed her own band Joan Jett And The Blackhearts the following year.

(Thanks Boo)

I am really eager to see The Runaways – not only because Kristen and Dakota are in it, but I love Joan Jett and I think the movie will be great. I really hope to see Kristen doing the vocals for the film, but only time will tell. I think Kristen was a good choice to play Joan and I think they do have a similar look.

What did you think of this interview? Will you be seeing The Runaways? Do you think Kristen was a good choice for Joan?

I think Kristen is really suited to the role (in terms of look and she plays music) and its great to see that she will be in something completely different from Twilight. It just shows how she can portray such diverse characters! Cant wait to see this!

she is such an awesome actress!she will be awesome for this movie!no doubt! can’t wait to see it!!!!

I’m looking forward to seeing Kristen in a non Bella role. Although I did rent “Speak” a few months ago it’s was bella-ish and disturbing watching a 14 year old get raped. She did a great job but I wondered about casting someone so young to do a scene like that. She was entirely believable and that was the disturbing part. My reaction was exactly what the director probably wanted. I felt compelled to rip the throat out of the attacker.

I really hope to see Joan Jett and not Bella or Kristen. =) I believe she can do it PLUS I can’t wait to hear her sing and watch her play guitar. Go Kristen!

I just saw Into the Wild and Kristen played the guitar and sang in the movie and was quite good. Joan Jett is such a different character than she has played before I hope she really rocks it.
I think those in the media are waiting see if she and Rob can play, with credibility other characters, since these are the first films being done by them after Twilight. I know they have both done things before, but they have now been thrust to the top, so the knives will be out and that is going to be tough on them.

Though I haven’t seen many movies with Kristen in them, I’m in awe of her maturity for her age. I don’t particularly like the new hairstyle, but certainly admire her for being so dedicated to the role. Seems like she does the research needed for the roles. Love Joan Jett, so can’t wait to see the movie.

Marianne – how was Into the Wild?? I’d like to see it. Has anyone seen the movie SPEAK? Thoughts?

Lisa: Into the Wild was on HBO I think, I saw it last night it was good, but it had a very sad ending. It’s based on a true story about a young man leaving his family, giving up all material things and going out into the wilderness of Alaska. It’s about his journey to get there and all the interesting people he encounters along the way, and they try to talk him out of what he’s going to do. He just literally wants to drop out totally get away from society in general. Kristen’s character is just one he meets along they way.

To Lisa, Into the wild is a briliant movie, directed by Sean Penn. Kristen’s brief appearance in it is very good & you’ll get to see her sing & play guitar. After all, its the movie Catherine Hardwicke had originally seen Kristen in before she approached her to play Bella. Great movie based on a true story which I think always makes it better.

I totally agree with Chris about a girl Kristen’s age at the time playing that part in “Speak”. Wow I was impressed. KStew has always had some level of maturity for one so young. On a similar point if you can get your hands on “The cake eaters”, that was another movie that called for a performance that only in my opinion an actress like Kristen Stewert could have done. Everytime I watch twilight (and I wont admit how often that is) I mentally congratulate Catherine Hardwicke on her choice of cast.

Finally, I cannot wait to see the runaways. I’m sure Kristen will be fantastic allbeit that hair style needs some getting used to (she is far more prettier as a brunette) but it just shows how devoted she is to her roles.
