THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER: ‘ECLIPSE’ HAS FOUND ITS MARIA
For the second night in a row, The Hollywood Reporter is giving us some more casting news. Yesterday they reported that Justin Huston will fill the role of Royce King II, and today they’re back and reporting that the role of Maria has been cast.
“Eclipse” has found its Maria, and she’s full of grace.Producers on Summit’s third “Twilight” pic have cast Catalina Sandino Moreno, best-known for playing the title character in the indie drama “Maria Full of Grace,” to play the vampire character of Maria.
The CAA-repped actress will take on the role of a woman who tries to create a newborn army of vampires, recruiting the Confederate soldier Jasper to her cause. In Stephenie Meyer’s book, the character is described as a petite brunette with a soft voice.
The Colombian-born Sandino Moreno most notably starred in “Grace,” in which she played a pregnant teacher who becomes a drug mule, as well as Steven Soderbergh’s epic “Che” and the upcoming indie drama “Frail,” in which she plays the title character, who’s described as a naive Midwestern girl.
The actress joins an “Eclipse” ensemble that — in addition to stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner — includes Jack Huston as a human who lived during the Great Depression, Xavier Samuel as a newborn vampire named Riley and Bryce Dallas Howard as the villainous Victoria, The actress replaces Rachel Lefevre last month in what amounted to a controversial casting switch.
“Eclipse,” directed by David Slade, begins shooting next week in Vancouver.

That’s awesome! I did actually picture Maria as younger, maybe around Jane & Alec’s age… but I think she will play the part beautifully, if you haven’t seen her performance in Maria Full of Grace then I totally recommend it (if you’re into those types of movies.) She played the beautifully and honestly, I can’t wait!

She certainly looks the part but I think Eclipse is in bad shape without Rachelle and I hate the person cast as Riley, this director really seems to be screwing this movie up… why did they hire him anyways, he admitted to hating Twilight and dissed Twilighters just before he got the job as director and he is proving true to that spirit in his replacement of Rachelle, she will be truly missed!! I almost want to boycott Eclipse but with all the fans out there, it will only hurt my enjoyment and not do much else…
Exactly how I pictured Maria - fresh faced, young, and beautiful. I hope she’s tiny - short - lol, because that is how I imagine her. Looking innocent and fragile but is in reality deadly and cunning.
i love the cast of the twilight saga but its nice to see a latina in the movie she is a great actress

Her face is perfect and looks exactly like the “Maria” in my head when I’m reading. This one is a no brainer - great job casting.
Now where’s Rachelle/Victoria?
ANOTHER BEAUTY added to the cast. She looks so sweet. I hope she can portray EVIL as well. I do think she looks like Maria in the book. WE SHALL SEE!!! : )

They’re really making good casting choices… Except for the whole Rachelle thing… That really made me mad. It bothers me when they make casting switches. But I guess we’ll have to see how Bryce is as Victoria…
Well, as I’ve said a million and one times before, I’ll reserve judgement til the movie, but this chick just seems too CUTE….
AND, with the loss of Rachelle, I’m just not happy at the moment, either.
However, half of us hated Rob (he’s a troll, anyone?!), when he was chosen, hated Nikki (she’s too tall, anyone?!) when she was chosen, so we’ll just have to see, won’t we?
She looks like I pictured Maria, beautiful, lets hope she can do mean and nasty.

I never did get the whole mean Rob hating. I loved him from the start, mainly because I thought he was great/handsome as Cedric Diggory.
Now Bryce replacing Rachelle, that’s another story.

im excited that this woman is going to be playing Maria but the main cast that i want to know who is going to play her is Victoria. she is the main character in Eclipse and withough Rachelle it’s going to be different.
i am sure that catalina will be great… and what a pretty name!!!!
i still don’t like nikki… but that is actually fitting for the role of rosalie as she is my least favorite cullen family member!!!!! and i never really thought nikki fit the description that the book offers for rosalie!!!!
edward is so dreamy, so anyone that they made into him was destined to be perfect in my mind… i read the books after i saw the twilight movie, so i have really only ever seen the picture of rob as edward… did i mention he is dreamy?!?!?! seriously, love him!!!!! =)
i really liked rachel as victoria… i do not think bryce is as pretty as rachel, and i have not been very impressed with her as an actress… rachel plays the nomad vampire role really well!!! she is already missed… =(
yea i can see her as maria. but i cudn’t find a pic of the guy acting as royce… and rachelle shud definately stay as victoria. wat is this director doin?

Doesnt matter to me. IT WILL NOT BE THE SAME WITHOUT RACHELLE! I don’t care. I’m disappointed.
I could see her as Maria… (I’m actually a bit curious as to who is going to play Nettie and Lucy [[her followers]])
I think with longer hair that’s like straight with some light waves.
