THE INSIDER: DAKOTA FANNING TALKS ‘TWILIGHT’ SEQUEL
We’ve been hearing rumors of Dakota Fanning joining the cast of ‘New Moon’ as Jane, but what does Dakota herself have to say about the rumors? The Insider was lucky enough to get her opinion on the matter, and her response is below:
Dakota tells us that though contracts haven’t been signed, she does hope to join the cast of ‘New Moon.’ She says she’s a big fan of the movie ‘Twilight’ and would really like to play a vampire, namely the sadistic Jane from Stephenie Meyer’s book series.
(Thanks Anitamachichi)
Well, we’d heard that she had been offered the role of Jane, but now we hear that she’s actually interested! For me, this is very cool news because I like Dakota and think that she would be great as Jane. I know many agree, but I know many also disagree!
So TAers, what do you think about this? Now that it seems like things are getting closer to Dakota securing the role, how do you feel?

dakota would be amazing as jane! i hope she gets it!!
I just want to find out who is playing who loll. Congrats to Dakota if she turns out to be Jane. I don’t think she would ruin the movie,,she is about my age and l am jealous of her ahha. But yeah the movie will be amazing no matter what (hopefully) and l don’t think she would ruin the movie. The last movie l saw with her was “Because of Winn Dixie” so l would enjoy seeing her in another movie. I am just relieved that Vannessa Anne Hudgens will not be in the movie lol idt she would make the best leah even though leah will most likely not even be in new moon.
Dakota would not be good…
1.) Too well known.
2) Jane is older. She is a petite woman (itleast that was the impression I had)
3.) Jane cannot be that young because it would go agianst Breaking Dawn
_____
Dakota would be good…
1.) Her innocence would be awesome with how demonic jane is
2.) If Jane really is that age and I’m mistaken, then I guess she would be ok.
_____
I still think that she is too well known though and watching her do this role might be a little bit comical.
My final answer: NEXT! find somebody else
I think she’d do great. I bet it would bring a lot of positive attention to the film as well. Dakota’s a well-known name and maybe people would start to see it as a reputable movie instead of just writing it off as a tween movie. Dakota’s not the type to do tween stuff and I can only imagine the increase of media attention for the film. I say, Go Dakota! That’s pretty impressive that she’d want to do the movie! Sadly, Jane doesn’t have a very big part in the books.
I think she’s creepy enough.
I don’t think she’s old enough, wouldn’t she be considered a vampire child?
But, I think she’d be good, if a little too well known.
She’d be perfect, perfect, perfect. Did I say perfect?
I think she is a great choice because the book says she is Alice sized, young, has short pale brown hair, and has a boyish face because Bella thought Jane was a young boy at first. Dakota is 15 years old so I think she is the right age and she does have the look I was thinking of. Just my opinion
I think she’s too young for the role of Jane.
Stupid.
The charm of Twilight was that the cast was virtually unknowns and the movie has now made them famous. Casting an already famous actress in what is going to be such a small part is unnessecary. Dakota is just trying to ride the bandwagon.
Plus, like the budget is not tight enough! Do we really need to be wasting money that could go towards better CGI on a well known star?
Bad Idea Jeans. Cast a cool nobody instead.
I don’t like the idea….I want to consider twilight as a kind of indie movie and this means for me taking little known actors…wich is not the case for Dakota…Also, I imagine Jane older than what Dakota looks like.
OMG How wierd is it that as i was reading new moon i said to my mum i think that the little girl off war of the worlds should play Jane. My mum didn’t read them and had no idea what i was talking about but still wierd that they picked her…
Jane is not a woman! Jane and Alec are children. It says so in New Moon. So Dakota might be a bit old for the part. I wish certain people would stop assuming that Jane and Alec are adults, which they are not. They are 10-12 years old. I was hoping for Jodelle Ferland. Even Dakota’s little sister Elle would be a good choice as well. Oh well I am just really interested in seeing who the whole Volturi cast will be
I Think She Will Be Good Because Its Not Like You See Jane THAT Much In The Movie And Whoever Plays Jane The Movie Is Still Going To Be As Fantastic As The First SO I Say Go 4 It!
Even though Dakota would be good, I think Jodelle Ferland would be much better..we’ll just have to see, even though I’m sure Dakota has secured the role. Congrats to her, though.
Remember, nothing is set in stone, people. Im sure if she is asking for an outrageous amount of money they wont take her. The bigger the name the higher the price. I personally hope they go with an unknown or under the radar actor but what the hell, I’ll be happy no matter what.
I am really annoyed about this. I’m sure she’d do a fantastic job. I’m just personally sick of Dakota Fanning. I really want her to go away for a few years and come back as an 18 year old ingenue or something. Plus, Jane is supposed to be quite beautiful, and in my opinion Dakota Fanning is just so/so. My personal pick would be Ana Sophia Robb, but now that Weitz has Dakota’s bee in his bonnet, I’m sure he’ll cap that soon.
Either way, (Dakota the annoying or Ana Sophia Robb) Tom Felton would be a fantastic Alec. I just wonder if he’d do it. Oh well…hopefully they’ve stopped considering Vanessa Hudgens as Leah, because if she’s cast too, I’ll have to boycott.
I don’t think Dakota would be too young - when I read the books, I sort of pictured the immortal children as babies and toddlers, that can’t be reasoned with, and therefore can’t be stopped.
At Dakota’s age, Jane would old enough to realise what was going on and such, be able to understand Aro’s orders, and be under control. I think Jane has to be young - so she looks innocent and cute.
i think she too well known. i don’t think she do young. i wouldn’t considered her to be vampire child.
I really dislike Dakota and I am not fond of her work history. I know that people say she is an incredible actress to be so young, but I think she was offered the roll because she has already worked for Summit before in the movie “Push”. I agree with K@t?3 that Jane needs to be older. I think the cast should be up and coming stars, that is one reason Twilight worked so well. It feels more real. I will be upset if she gets the part.
I think she will be fiiine.
As long as it’s no one disney related.
The costume and make up should do the job.
They’ll make her look older…they have to.
I doubt Stephenie will allow them to screw things up.
She has denied actors before and she’ll keep doing it if she has to.
As I ALWAYS say, I trust in Stephenie…they are HER characters.
“At first I thought is was a young BOY. The newcomer was as tiny as Alice, with lank, pale brown hair trimmed short. The body under the cloak-which was darker, almost black-was slim and androgynous. But the face was to pretty for a boy. The wide-eyed, full-lipped face would make aBotticelli angel look like a gargoyle”(PG 456/New Moon)Jane’s description.
“On the other side of the wooden doors was a different kind of reception. The pale BOY in the pearl gray suit could have been Jane’s twin. His hair was darker, and his lips were not as full, but he was just as lovely”(PG 464/New Moon)Alec’s description.
They are referred as childern. Looking like ANGELIC CHILDREN!
I wasn’t sure about Fanning at first either, not because she isn’t a amazing young actress…but I was just thinking of the “too known” element. You don’t want someone who’s “already established” career overshadowing the other stars who are still on the rise. I think she has the experience to do a good job…and if she gets it, it wouldn’t keep me away from the movie for sure…
She’s perfect! I’m pretty sure the book says in some way that she looks young and innocent? Is that right? Anyway, it’s Hollywood. If she needs to look older, they’ll make her look older. I love her and know that she will do a wonderful job
I dont think any of the cast of twilight were unknowns, Peter was in alot of movies like can’t hardly wait, Nikki, Jackson and Cam were all on the OC, Taylor was Sharkboy for crying out loud lol, Elizabeth was in Greys Anatomy and the Movie The Family Stone, Kellan was in Prom night, Accepted, and now 90210, Billy Burke was in alot of tv shows and Movies, ashley and some of the other small parters i think were unknowns, But Anyway I think Dakota Fanning Will be great as soon as I found out they were making New moon she was my 1st choice as Jane, I also think Alan Rickman Should be Either Marcus, Aro or Caius But I guess we wont know anything until its close to filming time *sighs*
I think she ofcourse would do a great job being the quality actress she is, but for this role i would definitely prefer a more unknown actress. Thats what made twilight so great, the fact that they were all relatively unknown and you wholy believed they were the characters from the book.
I think she’ll make a good Jane
Dakota Fanning was not in Because of Win Dixie
Wasn’t Jane 14 when she was turned into a vampire? If so then why would Dakota be to young? Just a thought!
I think Dakota Fanning would be great. She may be 14 but she is a very talented actress. Most only see her in roles as the this sweet girl but come on that is not the only role she could play. I think she could play mean like Jane. She may be young but she is more grown up than some adults actors I have seen. She knows what she is doing. She can pull Jane off any day.
Here are my Pro’s and Con’s.
___________
Pro’s:
1. She seems as old as I thought Jane was.
2. At least she’s not Disney
___________
Con’s:
1. She’s too well known.
2. She might not have the right look for Jane
3. If I’m mistaken about her age then… yeah you get the point.
___________
Those are my opinions, she would be a good Jane, but I would rather her not be in the movie. But I don’t care who stars in the movie (though they better not cast any disney people) I’m still gonna see the movie!
Jane and Alec are NOT CHILDREN. The book clearly states that they are child-like and short, but they are adults. As some of you have already said, if they were children that would go against the WHOLE principle of Breaking Dawn. I like Dakota Fanning but she obviously isn’t right for the role of Jane.
Not a fan of Dakota, would rather they choose someone else.
i think she would do a good job but they should aslo see if emmy rossum would like to star in the movie she would aslo be great as jane or they could put both of them as jane and heidi from stephenie meyers books
DAKOTA FANNING IS TOO YOUNG AND DUMB AND ANNOYING TO BE IN THIS. it will ruin the entire complex of the movie of the semi-unknown cool people who haven’t been in retard movies like uptown girls. it will take away from the entire script. she will be distracting, and i will only be able to think about her thinking she’s hot #### cuz she’s in it and acting really badly just like always. this is a travesty.
She had never crossed my mind, actually I could never picture any actress as her, but now that her name is out there and shes probably going to be in it; I can think of nobody better. I hope she gets it.
Jane was not a child; immortal children are not allowed by the Volturi, so the Volturi would not have a child in their ranks.
Alexa your wrong. And obviously you didn’t read the book right. they should be in their pre teens. And the immortal childern were refered as being in the ages of 2-5 years old. Carlisle talks about it. They are not adults.
Dakota Fanning is one of the cutest actresses I’ve ever seen. Her acting is far better than most in this century! Her playing Jane would give a nice kick in the rear-end for this movie (not in a bad way). More people will be interested in New Moon because of her status and reputation - I guarantee. I wanted Dakota as Jane anyways so this is great news for me!
As for Chris Weitz…watch out, if he screws this movie up its my fist in his face.
hmm I’m not so sure she’d be a great Jane. I think she’s a good child actor but I imagined Jane a little older, an ethereal beauty but strong physically and I also think Dakota might be too young. I guess if its confirmed she’s playing the role of Jane I’ll have to wait and see what she’s like when the movie comes out. I don’t know who’d play a good Jane but I hope they have a few other actors to consider for the role. And why are we hearing she was offered the role without an audition? I don’t think that’s completely fair.
Ana Sophia Robb would be perfect for the role
Dakotsa is not angelic looking enough
Dakota would make a good jane but so would ana sophia robb. Im not sure how they would pull it off but im sure it would be good. A relative unknown would work. As for aro i think ben barnes would be a good candidate. Hes got the looks and the acting skills to do it
I’m tired of seeing Dakota everywhere these days. Another lack of time issue for searching for the right actor due to the release date. As anxious as I am to see the movie version of New Moon - I also don’t want them to settle for less. The other actors all had experience, but were far from being household names. It was nice to watch actors that you weren’t familiar with - I believe it added to the story and the excitement afterwards wanting to get to know these actors outside of the movie. Dakota can’t be the only pretty little girl actor. It would be nice if the director read these comments and it might open his eyes!
Immortal childern were infants. This is what Carlisle says(read pgs 33-36 Breaking Dawn)”However, they could not be taught. They were frozen at whatever level of development they’d achieved before being bitten. Adorable two-year-olds with dimples and lisps that could destroy half a village in one of their tantrums. If they hungered, they fed, and no words of warning could restrain them, Humans saw them, stories circulated, fear spread like fire in dry brush…
So like I was saying Jane and Alec would be in their pre-teens(10-12) or maybe in their early teens. So there you go people.
My mom and I talked about her being Jane months ago! =]
I think she’ll make a GREAT.
Jane in the book is suppose to appear as 13. So Dakota will be GREAT. Plus she’s very good at play the more… disturbed characters.
I’m getting annoyed with all the complainers. Seriously people. It’s pretty apparent that they can’t cast people to match Stephenie Meyers’ descriptions exactly. They are looking for actors/actresses who would be good for the roles, not ones that just match the descriptions to a T. If that was the case, the movie would be filled with a lot of people who look right, but act horrible. Taylor Lautner wouldn’t be Jacob, Ashley Greene would never have been cast as Alice, Nikki wouldn’t be Rosalie, etc. Personally, I think Dakota is a fantastic choice, and the fact that a high profile actress like herself is pulling for the role is quite a compliment to the series and the first movie.
Also, I think having her in the movie would be fantastic for the film and for reaching out to other audiences that may have written the movie off as just some dumb teen flick before. Have you ever thought that if she is brought on and the movie does fantastic at the box office, the chances that Breaking Dawn will be made will be that much greater, especially since Jane has a bigger part in that movie as well?
And seriously, if I have to hear one more person complain that certain actresses don’t fit the description perfectly or that they’re going to boycott the movie if a particular person is cast, I’m going to scream. GROW UP! The world does not revolve around you!
My concern is that her salary will cut deeply into the film budget, and I don’t want any short cuts taken.
I kind of prefer unknowns for the roles, but they didn’t consult with me before filming, so I guess it doesn’t matter much!
I totally agree with K@t!3 and Alexa. I just reread the book this morning, and still do not get the impression that Jane is a child. It was something I struggled with after Dakota was tapped for the roll. I was sure that I had read wrong, since they were picking someone so young. Bella says that she is small and boyish, but that doesn’t make her a child. Heck, Alice is small too! I don’t think the Volturi - no matter how much Aro wanted her in his ranks - would have taken her life as a child. He would have waited as it is important to his agenda (as described in Breaking Dawn). No where in the book does it come out and say that Jane is 14 as Tiffany stated. If you can find that, please submit where here so we can all see it for ourselves.
I don’t see why everyone is trippin….. Who cares if she’s well known , she’s only in the end and that might bring something to the movie… In hide and seek. She’s really creepy I think she would do a great job… The movie is gonna b great no matter what, they kept the cast from twilight that’s really he best part….
I think she will do an amazing job. I admit shes pretty young but you would be amazed what computers can do to improve child features.
well obviously for those who think that Jane is older, you must have misread it. Because if Jane was older, The production would have looked for older actresses for the part.
what can I say? Dakota Fanning is BETTER THAN THE WHOLE TWILIGHT CAST TOGETHER! Don’t get me wrong: I love the cast, they are great. But she’s an AMAZING ACTRESS! She’s “Oscar material”, definetely.
I would say this is a very small role, and she deserves sooooo much more!!! But if she wants it: it’s AN HONOR for all of us TO HAVE SUCH A GREAT ACTRESS PLAYING JANE!!
I think in terms of acting skills, Dakota Fanning would be a good choice. But I liked how in Twilight they didn’t have such well-known
actors, but they were awesome.
What we need is a fresh, new face for Jane!
I mean, how fair is it that she just gets offered the part without any auditions?!
I kinda like the idea of Dakota as Jane. I can definitely see it. She also has the acting ability to be good at the role.
But Dakota is still at an age where just a year will make a huge difference in her appearance. So between New Moon and Breaking Dawn, which will be roughly a two year difference, she’s going to age from the ‘just out the tween stage’ look to a young lady look. 15/16 to 17/18 is a big difference. I know I changed a huge amount in the small length of time.
Jane, being a vampire, not going to age even a minute bit.
That’s the only grumble I have really. It’s all about the continuity.
I’d really like to see who else they’re going to bring on soon
.
Fanning too well known?
I agree. Though, I think she would do a fine job. I like the idea of an unfamiliar face much better though.
Just saw Inkheart. Consider Eliza Bennett! I think she would fit the role well and she’s not a famous face.
I honestly think she would make a wonderful Jane! I definitely think she could pull it off. Her acting ability makes the idea of her being Jane even better!
I like Dakota, she’s a very talented young actress and would love to see how she would portray Jane. Jane is supposed to be young anyway, didn’t the book say like a 13 year old? Can’t remember.
I agreee with emma! I COULD CARE LESS WHO WAS CAST AS JANE AS LONG AS THEY DO NOT LOOK LIKE THEY AGE AS THEY SAY IN THE BOOKS. I AGREE THAT SHE WILL CHANGE FROM 2 YEARS FROM NOW. HER FACE WILL BE SLIMMER AND SHE WILL BE MORE ADULT LIKE THAN SHE LOOKS NOW! I DO THINK THAT SHE IS A GOOD ACTRESS THOUGH! IF THEY HOPEFULLY DO MAKE A BREAKING DAWN SHE WOULD LOOK DIFFERENT THEN NEW MOON. I WOULD ALSO LIKE A UNKNOWN SO IT WOULD NOT CUT INTO THE BUDGET OF THE FILM, BUT IT’S WHAT THE DIRECTOR WANTS! ALSO YOU ALL WE HAVE TO REMEMBER STEPHANIE WILL BE THERE AT THE AUDITIONS TO HELP THE DIRECTOR FIND WHO WILL BE THE BEST FOR EACH CHARACTER! AND SHE DOES HAVE THE FINAL SAY IN WHAT GOES ON IN TE MOVIE AND WHO GETS THE PART! LOOK AT KELLAN THEY DIDN’T WANT HIM, BUT SHE SAID THAT SHE WANTED HIM AND WA LAH! THERE HE IS! CARLY I DO DISAGREE WITH YOU IN SOME WAYS BECAUSE I THINK ASHLEY GREENE WAS THE BEST CHOICE FOR ALICE BY FAR EVEN IF SHE IS A LITTLE TALL FOR THE PART! ALSO I THINK THAT NIKKI BRINGS ROSALIE TO LIFE QUITE WELL. AND I DO THINK THAT NIKKI IS VERY BEAUTIFUL FOR THE PART! SHE JUST HAS THAT LOOK TO HER! NO ONE IS GOING TO BE HAPPY WITH EVERYONE THAT IS IN THE MOVIE, BUT I AM HOPING IT WILL BE BETTER THAN TWILIGHT! I THINK ALAN RICKMAN WOULD BE AN AWESOME CHOICE FOR ONE OF THE 3 VOLTURI! EITHER ONE WOULD WORK! BECAUSE HE IS A GREAT ACTOR AT BEING MEAN, AND NASTY! I DO THINK BEN BARNES WOULD BE GOOD TOO! He has great acting ability that we have not even seen yet! you all have some really good choices, and i agree that in the end, I really think that the movie will be AWESOME! Everyone HAVE FAITH!
I feel terrible…I cannot stand Dakota Fanning, sorry but it’s true =(
I totally agree with Vivi. I don’t think big name stars are the way to go in this movie and I don’t think Dakota would fit the part well enough. She’s a great actress but she just doesn’t have the right look and the money they would pay her is going to take away from better graphics I bet…
yay!
I dont think she is supposed to be depicted as her own age..only look young.. i think she will pull it off
Twilight was such a good movie. i honestly feel that since this movie was such a success at the box office now they want to go and cast all of these famous people to be in New Moon. if this movie would not have did as good as it did..there would be no famous actors looking to jump on the Twilight bandwagon. i loved this movie because they kept it simple. no real superstars. you learned to appreciate those who were in the movie for their acting talent. does robert pattinson mean anything..hello????? he was literally an overnight success. i dont have anything against dakota fanning. i think putting in all of these famous actors would honestly just ruin the movie. Summit Entertainment should stay with new and upcoming actors. with all of the money that Twilight made it seems to work. dont change a good thing.
SHE’LL RUIN IT FOR ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why can’t they get someone new, like how Ashley Greene was, no one new about her untill she came in Twilight.
Why can’t they get someone new who hasn’t been in much before so if someone who already dosen’t like them and has already judges them won’te be unhappy, like me.
It’s so not fair, HALE NO!!!!!!!!!! I WILL NOT GO THROUGH THIS!!!!!
DAMN YOU DAKOTA FANNING!!!!!!
(i Love the twilight series very much, it is basically my life. Why does a little thing like this affect me so badly???!!!!
Great, now I’m goinng pscycho.
Goodbye, I’m going to go crawl up in a dark corner and cry.)
Okay, Hi. I’m sorry TA.
I’ve been complaining about Dakota playing Jane and saying “I’ll go emo.” But I looked at a few pictures and just want to apologise.
I’ve realised that alot of people want her to play her, and she looks good for her, I guess. I ‘m not on her side though, but if she gets the part I guess, I’ll be happy, even though I’ll have an everlasting grudge for new moon, but anyway, before I start complainging. I’m sorry.
omg if dakota does get to play it she would be sooooo lucky i would love to star in twilight i think she will be good in it. but there are other easons people might not want her in it. but i think it will be good xx hope she does well all tho im insanely and madly jealous xx i hope new moon is good altho edward is gone
not very pleased with that but i will still be good xx
I don’t think Dakotal is good for the part. She is toooo known and she takes away from the originality of the movie. Yes all the other actors have been in other movies but they were insignificants and not very well know, versus Dakota. I think a fresh face would have brought in more ORIGINALITY to The New Moon. Oh well….
