‘THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON’ SETS RECORD FOR BIGGEST MIDNIGHT OPENING EVER

Posted November 20th, 2009 By: Team Switzerland 12 Comments »

The title says it all, people! According to Gossip Cop (via word from Summit Entertainment), The Twilight Saga: New Moon is setting records already. Early numbers are putting New Moon as having the biggest midnight opening ever – even above The Dark Knight and Harry Potter – for a total of over $26 million. Read below for more stats:

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON has set a new record for opening midnight shows with an estimated gross of $26.270 million playing at 3,514 theaters for a per theater average of $7,476. THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON passes HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE ($22.2 million) to take the number one spot.* Following POTTER is DARK KNIGHT ($18.5 million).

In addition to THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON, last night Summit re-issued TWILIGHT in theaters. The film grossed $1.3 million playing at 2,057 theaters for a per theater average of $631. The re-issue of Twilight came in just outside the top 15 for the week this is notable especially considering that all came from just 9 PM Thursday night shows.

Entertainment Weekly has put out their prediction and they’re expecting the film to take in $105 million this weekend at the box office. Read more from them here.

Okay, I’m about speechless so I’ll leave the talking to you. What do you think of these numbers? Are you surprised the total is so high? Did you go see a midnight showing?

wow!! Thats so amazing!! the theater I went to added a 3:00am showing.

  • kalimando

I went to a sold out midnight showing. We saw Twilight first- the theater was about half full. There was an hour break in between Twilight and New Moon and the theater filled up quickly. My group had a blast and it seemed as though everyone else had as much fun as we did. Lots of cheering for certain scenes ;) .

Last night was amazing!! The movie too. I can see why they broke the record. I’m in Tacoma WA and our theatre was packed like sardines. They over sold tickets for 6 of the 15 theatre rooms. If people were saving seats they had to be given up to allow for who was already there. The movies was good and i thought a little fast paced, rushed, but overall great! Can’t wait to see ECLIPSE!

Fingers crossed. I hope they meet or exceed this new prediction in light of the numbers hoped for originally @ 80 mil.

FANTASTIC movie! More adults in our theater thanthe so-called “teen mob scene” that EW.com is spouting…great film! MUCH BETTER THAN TWILIGHT! http://javajitter.blogspot.com/2009/11/new-moon-blows-poorly-done-twilight.html

Oh yeah and I was one of those who at the last minute purchased Twilight Tickets while debating whether or not to stand outside, in line, in the cold for 4 hours. Since I have never seen Twilight on the big screen the debate became a no-brainer and a dream came true. Twilight on the big screen followed by New Moon. I wish all nights were like this one. =)

Saw the midnight showing of New Moon at the Cinerama Theatre in Seattle – with Twilight as the appetizer. Fantastic crowd. Like kalimando, the theatre wasn’t packed for Twilight (but boy were we noisy…laughing at all the inappropriate times – remember luncheon meat during the fight scene?). It filled up for New Moon, tho took us a while to quiet down from all the caffienated sodas we’d been drinking for hours to stay awake all night long. Definitely worth it! Seeing it again on Saturday, of course.

Ironically…we did about $40 more for our 9pm Twilight show.

It was a great night. Exhausting and hectic, but I heard no complaints and everyone had a blast.

We sold out all of our shows last night. And all but 1 show today. And we’re playing it every hour, on the hour.

Well, i didnt go to the premiere in our city, but it was sold out, of course. But WOW 105 million! thats 35 million more than Twilight! That is amazing. I wonder what itll be for Eclipse…. and (hopefully- fingers crossed!) for Breaking Dawn?

    Those numbers are remarkable!!!!
I’ll be excited to see what it all means on Monday!!!

I also saw both Twilight and New Moon. I loved it so much. I’m going to see New Moon again today with the family. I hope it makes $110 million this weekend. It’s well worth it. Go Team Edward.
