AUSTRALIA VOTES TWILIGHT INTO 2ND PLACE

Posted September 30th, 2008 By: 5 Comments »

The Cranberra Times is reporting that although Harry Potter was ranked #1 on for Australia’s favorite read, Twilight is in second place. They explain the process and other entries below:

The Angus & Robertson Top 100 list, promoted as a snapshot of the nation’s reading habits, ranks Stephenie Meyer’s blockbuster Twilight in second place, behind J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. More than 26,000 people voted for the list, which includes 52 new titles.

Traditional literature still has its fans, with classics such as Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (No3), Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird (No6) and Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights (No28) constituting 13 per cent of the list.

SOURCE

It’s pretty wild that Twilight was voted number 2 when Wuthering Heights and Pride and Prejudice were in the mix. I don’t think I agree with that, but the Australian fans have spoken. What do you think? Is Twilight in your top 5 list of books EVER?

The answer to your question kind of depends on what you mean by “Twilight”- personally, I do not separate the books in the series, so “Twilight” means all four books as a whole- I just cant single any of the books out; Im always like that when talking about books w/more than one in the series- I dont look at the books individually, but as just all parts of one REALLY long book. So, if we go w/that definition of “Twilight” (the whole saga), then my answer is most definitely yes. Let me explain a little bit about how I came to this conclusion:

ok, so im the type of person who says EVERYTHING is my favorite if i like it- books, movies, songs, etc. but despite this, i really do have certain books/movies/songs etc. that I consider my #1 or #2 or #3 all-time favs (I have very specific lists), and these do not change easily. Until I read Twilight, my #1 fav book of all-time (for about 5 years) was The Lord of the Rings (again, I do not single out the books in the trilogy- they, as a whole, count as one). But I have to say, that after reading Twilight (again, as a whole- meaning not just the first book), I vacillated for a while and then finally decided that yes, Twilight was officially my #1 fav of all time, and The Lord of the Rings moved down to #2 (sorry Tolkien- I still love you and admire you more than any other author!). Now, dont misinterpret this- I am not saying it is the BEST book of all time (I have a very separate and distinct list for BESTs as opposed to FAVs- they are extremely different), just my FAVORITE book of all-time. On the “best” list, The Lord of the Rings and the Simirillion would both be above Twilight (sorry Steph), as would some others more deserving. But i do not personally prefer/enjoy these books more than Twilight, so I cannot honestly say they are my favorite, even if technically they are much more genius works (again, no offense intended to Steph). Ha. bet you werent expecting that long of an answer to such a simple question, were you?

    Hey, its CANberra :-)
Also i just wanted to say how annoyed I am with Australia getting the bum end of the stick and not having the Twilight movie released until December. I really don’t get how the phillipines got their date changed, and if anyone knows how to do that, i’m all ears.
Surely we have a big enough fan base to warrent a similar release date??

Yeah, it certainly does. The whole series makes up 80% of my top 5. Due to Edward mainly :)

Okay, first of all, not everyone has the patience for somthing like Pride and Pedjudice, It’s one of my favorites, but for some that kind of language and humor is hard to read or understand. Harry Potter has been my favorite fo a decade, but Twilight came along and WHAM! I fell in love and became a team Edwrad chick! I love fan fiction and when I read Twilight it was like the ultimate fan fiction to me. You have angst, fear, humor, unbelievable romantic moments (sigh!) and you have the best characters ever! Im so glad that the Aussies agree with the Americans.
