Valentines Day Ecards

TWILIGHT SET TO MAKE $30 MILLION ON OPENING DAY

Posted November 21st, 2008 By: Team Switzerland 20 Comments »

After initial reports that Twilight had made more than $7 million in midnight showings on Thursday, Variety is now reporting that the movie is set to make nearly $30 million on opening day alone. They also have some interesting statistics about where the top grossing theaters are, how much the movie is set to make through the weekend, and more.

Here is what Variety had to say:

Summit Entertainment’s “Twilight” could see an opening day take of $30 million from 3,419 playdates after grossing north of $7 million in Thursday midnight shows.

If so, “Twilight” could land a spot on the top 20 list of best opening day grosses, somewhere between No. 17 and No. 20.

“Twilight” is expected to open in the $50 million to $60 million range, although it has a shot of ending in the 60s. It depends upon how much traffic slows down from Friday to Saturday.

“Twilight,” based on the best-selling book series by Stephenie Meyer, is No. 3 on online ticketer Fandango’s list of top advance ticket sales. Only “Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith” and “The Dark Knight” sold more.

Females, specifically tween girls and teenage girls, are driving “Twilight.” But it’s not just younger femmes turning out to see the teen vampire romancer, but older women and teen boys, too.

The top three grossing theaters so far are in Utah. Meyer, who lives in Arizona, is Mormon.

Sunday could be a bigger movie-going day than normal since 17% to 18% of kids will be out of school the next day. According to a Fandango survey, 34% of moviegoers said they intended to duck out of classes Friday in order to see the movie.

“Twilight” is a tremendous victory for Summit Entertainment. “Twilight” landed at Summit after several other shops passed, including MTV Films.

It’s a ready-made franchise for Summit, since there are four books in Meyer’s series, which have sold more than 17 million copies worldwide, including $8.2 million in the U.S.

I’m loving all the statistics that are being reported. $30 mil on opening day is huge and those numbers alone prove some of the pessimistic critics wrong already.

Are you surprised by these statistics? Do you expect things will slow down between today and tomorrow, or do you think it will just continue to get busier?

OMG. 30 million on opening day alone!! Thats better than I expected.
I doubt it will slow down from to tomorrow, if the theater I went to was any indication. It was insane.

Just got back from an 8:15pm show in Jacksonville (no sign of Renee or Phil in the audience, though). The box office folks said they’ve been loading up the theaters all day. I can only imagine how well it’s doing in major markets if it’s doing well in J’ville. Kudos to Summit and everyone involved in this movie!

wow, 30mil on opening day is fantastic! I thought twilight would open in the 50million range, but at this rate it should get to 70 million without any problems! I don’t want to get too far ahead- but I really hope we hear that summit greenlights new moon by monday! Can’t wait to see the volturi :)

These numbers are fantastic! I know that as of last night most of the theaters in the Greater Philadelphia area were very close to being sold out for the remainder of the weekend and that’s just one smaller primary market, so I think 60 mil is a good bet.

I really don’t think it’s going to slow down. I went on Thursday night and I’m dying to go again. I already have plans to see it Sunday and I bet I’m not the only one seeing it multiple times this weekend.

  • Laurie

I hope it doesn’t slow down. I went on Thursday night, Fri afternoon and I’m going tomorrow. I can’t help it…at least I’m going with different people each time. That’s my excuse :)

Its impressive so far. The reviews are looking decent, and hopefully word of mouth will drive it a little further now. Another big plus is the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, and a lot of people will go to the movies then, too (some who did not want to brave the opening weekend madness…a lot of folks I talked to said they thought they’d wait till next weekend to see it and spare themselves the screaming crowds). I’ll be excited to see the final numbers at the beginning of the week…

is this true!!! I know that this movie will be one of the top-grossing film of all time, but still, it is surprising… Please do not be contented by this report, do watch the movie, I know that it’s worth your time… Robert Pattinson is just so HOT!!!

The lady on Fox News said Twilight wasnt doing well in the reviews but that usually is a good sign! They said Titanic was a flop, remember. I never agree with reviews, I dont trust someone else to make up my mind for me. I cant see the movie until possibly sunday night or Monday. Sadness! But, $30 million is great! Atleast Summit earned back what it almost cost the movie to make!

ONLY 120 MILLION TO GO TO NEW MOON!!!!

Im in Augusta Georgia. Well I ordered my tickets early from fandango… I went to the theater to pick them up at like 2ish today… There were lines for the movie EVERYWHERE they said it had been like that at the midnight showing and all day long today. I went to the 7:30 showing in the evening and the were still lines… I got lucky and the theater i was in i didnt have to wait to get in there but the other 3 showings that were on the hall i was on were lines sooo long wrapping down the halls and out to lobby and it was like that on the other side too… why we didnt have to wait i dont know? Maybe it was because we were an hour earlier haha i dunno… My husband went to sleep like 25 minutes in to movie haha… just a tidbit i thought was funny… He got mad i wouldnt tell him certain things and the reason why bella falling down was so funny to every one and other things haha

  • Ana

That’s amazing. I can’t wait to see number from yesterday. When can we get those?

  • Barby

I went to the midnight showing on Thursday with 7 people and Friday night with another 8. The theaters in Miami, FL were totally packed. People were lining up 2 hours before the movie even started. This makes me so happy (I want to gloat a little). I can’t wait to see the rest of the books made into movies!

I’ve seen the movie TWICE already. Once at the midnight showing on thursday night with my 2 teenage daughters, last night with my mom at the 7:00 pm showing and today, my mom & I are going back with my younger daughter to see it again!!! The movie is amazing. While I was there last night, there were tons of people there that had already seen it at the midnight showing. Just the repeaters are going to drive this movie home. It’s an amazing movie that was better the second time around! GO SEE IT!

  • Elisa

I’m not surprised at all! If I hadn’t pre-ordered tickets, I would’ve been out of luck, because the theater I go to is SOLD-OUT FOR TWO WEEKS!! $30 million doesn’t surprise me! And it’s NOT going to slow down. I can hear New Moon coming! :D

  • Christine

I don’t think it will slow down. Im going to see it tomorrow morning, and I bet it will be jam packed. All the theaters in my area were sold out for the midnight, and a lot of the opening day shows. It was craaazy.

  • Lenny

I’ve seen the movie 3 times already and I’m going again tomorrow..I can’t stop watching it is just so freaking good! I’m so happy that New Moon is going to get done. The first time I went to see it there was a line waiting for the next showtime and the auditorium was PACKED absolutely FULL and then this morning was surprisingly FULL too, then I went again around noon and it was still FULL and I’m betting on a lot of people there tonight and tomorrow.I’m thinking about going to see it tonight too..gosh it really was well done!

    PS: loved the line”sex,money,sex,money…cat”LMAo

WOW this movie was fantastic and now I know why my wife was sooooo addicted and read all the books in like a week. The story had me fixed to the movie screen like a kid in a candy shop. I went home and the next night started New Moon all alone in my quiet room and got a quarter through the book in two hours and am loving it. I wish the second movie was coming out this week. Go see it even if you arent into the whole vampire thing, because at a minimum it is a fantastic love story to be admired and well written. Now let me get out of the sub, my

i have read all 4 books. in all honesty, i didnt think the movie was going to turn out so well because i couldn’t think of ANY actor that could play edward cullen. but robert pattison did an amazing job nailing edward’s personality. i don’t think anyone could’ve done a better job than he did. of course they couldn’t fit all 600 pages of the novel into a 2 hour movie but i loved the movie

  • Dirtbikergrl18

Just got home from watching Eclipse…it was amazing! I will definitely have to go and see it again! I would recommend this to everyone out there.
