TWILIGHT SAGA BOOK CLUB: INVITATIONS TWILIGHT CHAPTER 4

Posted April 17th, 2009 By: 1 Comment »

Welcome to the Twilight Saga Book Club Chapter 4 Invitations. TA Staff member Claire makes her debut in the book club. Enjoy:

Twilight: Chapter Four: Invitations By Claire

In Chapter Four, Invitations, Bella navigates through the world of Forks High School in the days following the accident. Still frustrated by Edward’s refusal to discuss the details of how he saved her, she is also grateful that he saved her life and she attempts to speak to him during her first day back in class. Edward ignores her. However, to Bella’s other classmates, she remains the center of attention. This comes just in time for the girls’ choice dance, which she does not want to attend; we know that her clumsiness does not lend itself to dancing. But Mike Newton, Eric Yorkie, and Tyler Crowley become encouraged following the accident and each ask Bella to the dance (despite the girl’s choice theme). Bella turns them all down, but not before Edward gets to witness the invitations, particularly Mike’s, in biology class.

As Edward watches Bella’s suitors from afar, seemingly amused, he once again begins to approach her. Bella is confused and does not know how to interpret his behavior. With each encounter, Edward tells Bella that it would be better if they were not friends. Yet he continues to engage her in conversation, leading up to the conclusion of the chapter, when he asks her to accompany him to Seattle during the weekend of the dance. This is the invitation that Bella accepts – and a pivotal point in her relationship with Edward begins.

Characters Involved:
Edward Cullen, Bella Swan, Mike Newton, Tyler Crowley, Eric Yorkie, Jessica Stanley, Charlie Swan, Mr. Banner

Characters Mentioned:
Renee Dwyer, the Cullens, the Hales

Places Visited:
Swan Residence, Forks High School

Significant Events:
We learn that Bella is the center of attention in the days following the accident, but no one is concerned about Edward’s role in the incident.
Mike Newton, Eric Yorkie and Tyler Crowley all ask Bella to girls’ choice dance on the same day.
Edward begins to speak to Bella again.
Edward asks Bella to go to Seattle with him.

Memorable Quotes:
Edward Cullen: “I said it would be better if we weren’t friends, not that I didn’t want to be.” – pg 84
Edward Cullen: “It would be more prudent for you not to be my friend. But I’m tired of trying to stay away from you, Bella.” – pg 84
Bella Swan: “Do you have a multiple personality disorder?” – pg 82
Edward Cullen: “You think I regret saving your life? You don’t know anything.” – pg 75
Bella Swan: “I don’t see how that is any of your business.” Stupid, shiny Volvo owner. – pg 83
Edward Cullen: “The waste of finite resources is everyone’s business.” – pg 83
Edward Cullen: “Will you go to Seattle with me?” – pg 84

Questions for Consideration:
1) Were you surprised at the attention that Bella received following the accident? Do you think she is as “ordinary” as she describes herself?
2) What did you think of Bella’s reaction to her suitors?
3) What did you think of Bella’s reaction to Edward’s behavior?
4) How did you feel when Edward asked Bella to go with him to Seattle?

TWILIGHT SAGA BOOK CLUB: PHENOMENON TWILIGHT CHAPTER 3

Posted April 10th, 2009 By: 3 Comments »

Welcome to the Twilight Saga Book Club Chapter 3 Phenomenon. TA Staff member Nikki is back with Chapter 3. Enjoy:

Twilight Chapter Three – Phenomenon by Nicole

Bella awakens the following morning and discovers that the temperature has dropped overnight. The ground is covered with ice, making everything slick and especially dangerous for a klutz like Bella. She is pleasantly surprised to discover that Charlie has put chains on her tires for her. Bella arrives at school and immediately observes two things: Edward, who’s looking at her from across the lot with an expression of horror on his face and Tyler Crowley’s van barreling toward her. A split second later, Edward throws Bella to the ground out of the way of the van’s path. He then appears to push the van away twice in order to save her from being crushed. While waiting to be rescued from the wreckage Bella asks Edward how he got to her so quickly. Edward insists that he was standing right next to her the whole time. Bella swears that she saw him standing across the lot though. Bella, Tyler and Edward go to the hospital where they are treated by Edward’s father Carlisle. Carlisle looks similar to Edward because he also has very pale skin and golden colored eyes – and he is gorgeous. Tyler has more inquiries than Bella, but Edward didn’t suffer even a scratch in the accident. Tyler profusely apologizes to Bella and Edward in the hospital room and they both tell him to stop worrying. Carlisle tells Bella she can go home and rest for the day.

Before Bella leaves the hospital she confronts Edward about what happened in the parking lot. He insists that he was standing next to her, but Bella also stands her ground and tells him that she knows he was not. She also accuses Edward of using super-human strength to lift and push the van away from her. Edward replies that no one will believe her and will not talk further on the subject. Bella demands to know why he is lying and assures him she would never tell anyone his secrets. Edward angrily stalks off when she won’t let the issue go. Once she is back at home, Bella gets a call from her mother who is hysterical with concern. Renee desperately wants Bella to move back to Phoenix but she insists that she wants to stay in Forks. This is the first night that Bella dreams of Edward Cullen.

Characters Involved:
Bella Swan, Edward Cullen, Tyler Crowley, Charlie Swan, Carlisle Cullen

Characters Mentioned:
Mr. Varner, Coach Clapp, Mike Newton, Eric Yorkie, EMTs and Hospital staff, Rosalie and Jasper Hale, Alice and Emmett Cullen, Renee Dwyer

Places Visited:
Swan Residence, Forks High School, Hospital

Significant Events:
· Edward appears to have super human strength, speed and invulnerability to harm
· Carlisle looks much like Edward and his siblings
· Carlisle is uncomfortable discussing Edward and the van incident
· Edward’s siblings seem angered and/or incredulous about the incident
· Bella dreams about Edward for the first time

Memorable Quotes:

Bella Swan: “If I was being honest with myself, I knew I was eager to get to school because I would see Edward Cullen. And that was very, very stupid.” Pg. 54

Bella Swan: “Edward Cullen was standing four cars down from me, staring at me in horror. His face stood out from a sea of faces, all frozen in the same mask of shock.”…“Just before I heard the shattering crunch of the van folding around the truck bed, something hit me, hard, but not from the direction I was expecting.” Pg. 56

Edward Cullen: “You think I lifted a van off you?” Pg. 65

Edward Cullen: “I hope you enjoy disappointment.” Pg. 65

Bella Swan: “I was consumed by the mystery Edward presented. And more than a little obsessed by Edward himself.” Pg. 67

Bella Swan: “That was the first night I dreamed of Edward Cullen.” Pg. 67

Questions for Consideration:
Were you in disbelief when Edward saved Bella? What did you initially think happened?
Would you protect a secret for someone you barely knew, like Bella agrees to do for Edward?
Would you also stay in Forks after the events of her first week there?

TWILIGHT SAGA BOOK CLUB: OPEN BOOK, TWILIGHT CHAPTER 2

Posted April 3rd, 2009 By: 6 Comments »

Welcome to the Twilight Saga Book Club Chapter 2 Open Book. TA Staff member Nikki is back with Chapter 2. Enjoy:

Twilight, Chapter Two – Open Book (Nicole)

On Bella’s second day of school she is relieved to find that she is not being stared at as much. She realizes that Mike Newton has a crush on her and wonders how to get him to back off a bit. In gym class she hits someone with the volleyball. Also, Edward Cullen is not at school. She thought all day about his reaction to her. After school she sees the rest of the Cullens getting into an expensive car and realizes that she was so preoccupied with their beauty she didn’t notice how well dressed and wealthy they look.

Bella learns that Charlie can’t cook so she offers to do the cooking. At dinner that evening Bella asks Charlie about the Cullens. His response is quite impassioned, which is rare for him. He reveals that he likes the Cullens and makes it clear that there are a lot of other people that are suspicious of them. Edward Cullen does not come back to school for the rest of the week, keeping Bella’s suspicions alive that she is the reason.

Back at school on Monday, Bella sees that Edward has returned and she feels strangely self-conscious when he stares at her during lunch. Edward speaks to Bella in Biology for the first time and his smile mesmerizes her and renders her speechless. While working on a lab their hands accidentally touch and Bella feels a jolt of electricity; they both jump in reaction. She notices that Edward’s eyes are no longer black, but a more golden color. She asks him if he got contacts and he quickly replies that he has not.

Edward grills Bella about why she has moved to Forks and she tells him all about her mother and her reason for moving. Edward admits that he finds her difficult to read, which surprises her because her mom has always called her an ‘open book’. She is generally not talkative and is surprised that she has spoken so freely with Edward. She is also frustrated by him – she can’t tell if he hates her or not. Edward stares at Bella in the parking lot after school, causing her to nearly hit another car when she backs out too fast. She thinks she can see Edward laughing in her rear view mirror as she drives away, frustrated.

Characters Involved:

Bella Swan, Mike Newton, Eric Yorkie, Jessica Stanley, Renee Dwyer, Charlie Swan, Mr. Banner, Mr. Varner

Characters Mentioned:

Dr. Carlisle Cullen, Jasper and Rosalie Hale, Emmett and Alice Cullen, Phil Dwyer

Places Visited:

Swan residence, Forks High School, Thriftway Grocery Store, Forks Library

Significant Events:

·Edward is not at school all week, making Bella anxious
·Bella realizes that the Cullens must be wealthy
·Edward speaks to Bella for the first time in class
·Edward’s eyes have dramatically changed color
·Bella cannot tell how Edward feels about her, but she thinks of him constantly

Memorable Quotes:

Bella Swan: “It was ridiculous, and egotistical to think that I could affect anyone that strongly. It was impossible. And yet I couldn’t stop worrying that it was true.” Pg. 31

Jessica Stanley: “The Cullens don’t like anybody… well, they don’t notice anybody enough to like them. But he’s still staring at you.” pg. 42

Bella Swan: “His fingers were ice-cold, like he’d been holding them in a snowdrift before class. But that wasn’t why I jerked my hand away so quickly. When he touched me, it stung my hand as if an electric current had passed through us.” Pg. 45

Bella Swan: “I vividly remembered the flat black color of his eyes the last time he’d glared at me – the color was striking against the background of his pale skin and his auburn hair. Today, his eyes were a completely different color: a strange ocher, darker than butterscotch, but with the same golden tone.” Pg. 46

Edward Cullen: “Forks must be a difficult place for you to live.” Pg. 48

Bella Swan: “I was in disbelief that I’d just explained my dreary life to this bizarre, beautiful boy who may or may not despise me.” Pg. 50

Questions for Consideration:
What did you initially think when Edward Cullen was missing at school all week?

Do you agree with Edward that Bella is hard to read? Or do you think she is more an “open book” as she describes herself?

Why do you think there was a shared jolt of electricity when Edward and Bella touch in Biology?

TWILIGHT SAGA BOOK CLUB: FIRST SIGHT, TWILIGHT CHAPTER 1

Posted March 27th, 2009 By: 10 Comments »

Welcome to the Twilight Saga Book Club Chapter 1 First Sight. TA Staff member Nikki starts us off. Enjoy:

Twilight, Chapter One: First Sight, (Nicole)

Summary

In the first Chapter, we meet Isabella Swan (who prefers to be called Bella). She is described as having very pale skin, brown eyes and hair and is a petite girl; she is thin but soft-not athletic looking at all. She is a junior in high school and a good student, with the exception of gym because she is dangerously clumsy and uncoordinated. We also learn that she is quick witted and sarcastic.

She has just moved from Phoenix, Arizona where she lived with her mother and step-father to the town of Forks, Washington to live with her father Charlie who is the Chief of Police. Bella decided to move to Forks because she felt she should give her mother the freedom to follow her new husband Phil while he pursues a career in Minor League Baseball, which requires him to travel. Bella loved the dry heat in Phoenix and does not look forward to living in the cold, rainy town of Forks. Forks is a small town, with only 358 students in at the high school; there were thousands at Bella’s school back in Phoenix.

Charlie picks Bella up at the airport in a nearby town called Port Angeles. Bella feels awkward with Charlie but quickly warms up to him; realizing that she takes after him in lots of ways including a shared comfort with silence. Charlie surprises Bella by giving her an old red 1950’s Chevy pick-up truck that he purchased from his friend Billy Black, an elder in the nearby Quileute tribe in La Push. Bella can’t believe Charlie’s generosity and she is surprised that she really loves the old truck.

Bella drives herself to school for her first day and gets familiar with the layout of the campus. She meets several friendly students who escort her to class and make conversation with her. She doesn’t love the attention she gets as the new girl, but likes several of the kids she meets. At lunch, she sits with Mike Newton who is easy-going, cute and a bit flirty; Jessica Stanley who is chatty; Eric Yorkie who is sort of a nerd and Angela Weber who is shy but sweet.

It is at lunch that Bella notices five students sitting together in the corner of the lunch room. There are three boys and two girls; they are all pale and beautiful. Bella asks Jessica about them because they clearly stand out in Forks. Jessica tells her that they are the Cullen’s, who moved to Forks about 2 years previous from Alaska. They are the adoptive family of Dr. Carlisle Cullen and his wife. Jessica tells her that four of the five Cullen children are in relationships together, Rosalie and Emmett and Alice and Jasper. Bella asks particularly about the bronze haired boy on his own. Jessica tells her that this is Edward and that ‘no one in town is good enough for him’.

Bella gets to her next class, Biology with Mr. Banner. She is seated in the only empty seat, next to Edward Cullen. Edward glares at her throughout class and clenches his fists several times, she can’t help but thinking that he dislikes her intensely. She heads to the school office and finds Edward there asking Ms. Cope to switch him out of Biology for any other class. Another student walks in and a gust of wind blows in the doorway past Bella; Edward’s back stiffens and he turns toward her. He tells Ms. Cope not to bother and glares at Bella as he swiftly leaves the office. Bella drives home from school upset and fighting tears of frustration and anger. She doesn’t understand Edward Cullen’s reaction to her and why it has affected her so strongly.

Characters Involved:

Isabella Swan, Renee Dwyer, Charlie Swan, Mrs. Cope, Mr. Varner, Mr. Mason, Eric Yorkie, Jessica Stanley, Mike Newton, Angela Webber, Edward Cullen

Characters Mentioned:

Phil Dwyer, Billy Black, Alice Cullen, Emmett Cullen, Jasper Hale, Rosalie Hale, Esme Cullen, Carlisle Cullen, Mr. Banner, Coach Clapp, Ms. Cope

Places Visited:

Phoenix, Arizona, Sky Harbor Airport, Phoenix, Arizona, Forks, Washington, Forks High School, Swan Home, Port Angeles Airport

Significant Events:

·Bella moves to Forks, Washington from Phoenix, Arizona.
·Bella starts at a new school and makes some new friends.
·Bella is intrigued by the Cullens, particularly Edward who seems like he hates her.
·Bella cries when she is angry, not sad.
·Edward doesn’t realize Bella is in the office until the breeze blows into the room.
·Edward Cullen has black eyes.

Memorable Quotes:

Bella Swan: “Sometimes I wondered if I was seeing the same things through my eyes that the rest of the world was seeing through theirs. Maybe there was a glitch in my brain.” –pg 11

Bella Swan: “I was expected, a topic of gossip no doubt. Daughter of the Chief’s flighty ex-wife, come home at last.” –pg 13

Bella Swan: “I stared because their faces, so different, so similar, were all devastatingly, inhumanly beautiful.” –pg 19

Jessica Stanley: “That’s Edward. He’s gorgeous, of course, but don’t waste your time. He doesn’t date. Apparently none of the girls here are good-looking enough for him.” –pg 22

Bella Swan: “I‘d noticed that his eyes were black – coal black.” – pg 23

Bella Swan: “I peeked up at him one more time, and regretted it. He was glaring down at me again, his black eyes full of revulsion. As I flinched away from him, shrinking against my chair, the phrase if looks could kill suddenly ran through my mind.” –pg 24

Mike Newton: “So, did you stab Edward Cullen with a pencil or what? I’ve never seen him act like that.” – pg 25

Bella Swan: “For an instant, I felt a thrill of genuine fear, raising the hair on my arms. The look only lasted a second, but it chilled me more than the freezing wind.” –pg 27

Questions for Consideration:

What was your first impression of Isabella Swan?

What was your first impression of Edward Cullen?

Would you do what Bella did for your mother or father?

Do you like Bella’s new friends? Which ones and why?

TWILIGHT SAGA BOOK CLUB: MEET THE LADIES LEADING OUR GROUP

Posted March 25th, 2009 By: 12 Comments »

Claire, Nikki, Emily and Erica have shared a little about themselves and why they’re a part of the new feature The Twilight Saga Book Club.

Claire: About me and the saga:

Name: Claire
Age: unknown
From: New Jersey
Favorite Book: Twilight….with Eclipse as a very close second
Team: Edward
Favorite Character: Edward Cullen
Favorite Quote: “Bella, I couldn’t live with myself if I ever hurt you. You don’t know how it’s tortured me. The thought of you still, white, cold…to never see you blush scarlet again, to never see that flash of intuition in your eyes when you see through my pretenses…it would be unendurable. You are the most important thing to me now. The most important thing to me ever.” – Edward Cullen, Twilight, Chapter 13, pg. 273

I discovered Twilight last June in a small bookstore. I was immediately captivated by the story, fell hopelessly in love with Edward Cullen, and wasted no time in reading the other books, including lining up to get Breaking Dawn at midnight.

Although I knew that the hold that Twilight had on me was strong, I never expected that I would join a website forum and meet so many wonderful people. I have truly enjoyed getting to know everyone at Twilighters Anonymous as both a member and a mod. When I had the opportunity to work on the book club, I was thrilled to be able to relive the books with all of you in such a unique way.

Nikki: About me and the saga:

Name: Nicole
Age: 28
From: Phoenix, Arizona
Favorite Book: Twilight (New Moon is a very, very close second)
Team: Edward
Favorite Character: Edward Cullen
Favorite Quote: “Before you, Bella, my life was like a moonless night. Very dark, but there were stars—points of light and reason… And then you shot across my sky like a meteor. Suddenly everything was on fire; there was brilliancy, there was beauty. When you were gone, when the meteor had fallen over the horizon, everything went black. Nothing had changed, but my eyes were blinded by the light. I couldn’t see the stars anymore. And there was no more reason for anything.” – Edward Cullen, New Moon, Chapter 23, pg. 514

My sister and I started reading Twilight in the summer of 2008 at the same time. We both stayed up late every night reading and would gush about what we read the next day. We became so much closer because of our love for Twilight; as sisters and as friends. We knew quickly that we were falling unconditionally and irrevocably in love with Stephenie Meyer’s story (not to mention the amazing Edward).

I have met so many good friends and great people here on Twilighters Anonymous and I was just ecstatic to be a part of the Book Club here! I really look forward to inspiring new readers and also injecting some new magic into the series for you veterans! While working on this project I was energized by the story again and I want you to feel it too. So have fun reading and discuss!

Emily: About me and the saga:

Name: Emily
Age: 27
From: Calgary, AB CANADA
Favorite Book: Twilight
Team: Edward
Favorite Character: Edward Cullen
Favorite Quote: “Oh for the love of all that’s holy!” – Edward Cullen, Breaking Dawn, Chapter 2, pg. 28

Hi! I’m Emily. I’m a bit of a nerd and I like electronics and anything computer related including video games although I’m more of a spectator than a real gamer. I am passionate about my friends, family and my obsessions…namely all things Twilight and Robert Pattinson!!

I started reading the Twilight Saga in July 2008 and joined Twilighters Anonymous in September 2008 looking for a place to gush and discuss my obsession. I am so glad to be a member. Twilighters Anonymous has allowed me to meet some wonderful friends and has given me a chance to ramble on and on about what I think about Twilight without being glared at. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss it even more through the Book Club, and I hope to be able to share the happiness that this story has brought to my life, as well as learn more about how others interpret and view the love between Edward and Bella. \(^o^)/

Erica: About me and the saga

Name: Erica
Age: 20
From: Bensalem, PA
Favorite Book: Twilight
Team: Edward
Favorite Character: Edward Cullen
Favorite Quote: “I’ll be back so soon you won’t have time to miss me. Look after my heart — I’ve left it with you.” – Edward Cullen, Eclipse, Chapter 4, pg. 95

This book series has done so much for my life. I started reading the series when it first came out in 2005 and I was hooked! I remember waiting impatiently for each book to come out! When I had a bad day, just reading these books helped me escape to a world where fantasy and romance embraced me openly. I’m also happy to admit that I have both my best friends and boyfriend fans of the books! This book series helped me make many new friends here on Twilighters Anonymous and in my real life and I am forever grateful.

When I heard that we were doing a book club, I jumped on the opportunity to be a part of it. It was great reading Twilight again and dissecting each chapter again (like I needed an excuse to read Twilight again haha!). I’m so happy to be a part of this awesome idea so I hope you enjoy the work that we all put into it!

These are the ladies who will be bringing you the Twilight Saga Book Club each Friday. They will summarize the chapters, include quotes, characters involved, places visited, significant events, and thought provoking questions.

Mark your calendars – you have a date with TwilightersAnonymous.com every Friday!

Look for the first installment on the 27th. Read the first chapter of Twilight in preparation for our new club. We welcome your participation. And tell your friends, the more the merrier!

EDIT: You can discuss it on the blog or on the forum here Our book club ladies will be reading your responses and they will comment as much as they are able.

I will do my best to post each new chapter by lunch time on Fridays. Please forgive me in advance if it’s a little late!
