‘TWILIGHT’ SCRIPT WAS ONCE EYED BY ‘HARRY POTTER’ DIRECTOR

Posted July 2nd, 2009 By: Team Switzerland 9 Comments »

MTV News has learned that Chris Columbus, director for The Sorcerer’s Stone and The Chamber of Secrets from the Harry Potter franchise, had once eyed the script for Twilight in the beginning stages. Read below for the full account:

Looking at the “Twilight” that could have been, MTV News has learned that two-time “Harry Potter” director Chris Columbus took a glance at the script at the beginning of the adaptation process.

“I guess I did read a script early on,” says the director, who most recently helmed “I Love You, Beth Cooper.”“But I was doing something else.”

Columbus, who directed both “Sorcerer’s Stone” and “Chamber of Secrets” is no stranger to fantasy book series, planning his next film as an adaptation of the first “Percy Jackson” novel, “The Lightning Thief,” which has already begun casting.

In the meantime, he’s not looking at “Twilight” as a missed opportunity or regretting leaving the “Potter” franchise, though he admits that it’s a strange feeling to see the new films come out with different directors.

“I miss it just because I look at everyone I cast and all these sets I built. Everything is still standing there. It’s weird. It’s like looking at old home movies, though the people in the home movies are aging … The kids are getting older and they’ve become better actors. All the things I hoped for have come true … But it’s a very odd separation anxiety to see my entire cast and crew behind the camera. It’s like, ‘Where am I in this situation?’”

(Thanks Boo)

I’m a huge fan of Harry Potter and the films, so I think it would have been really interesting to see Chris as the director for Twilight. We’ve had a few HP crossovers (with Rob Pattinson and now Jamie Campbell-Bower), so it would have been very cool to see a third. I wonder if it’s a possibility for him to directing Breaking Dawn (should it be made)…?

Are you surprised to learn that Chris Columbus had read the script? How would you feel if he had directed Twilight? Would you be curious to see him take the helm for Breaking Dawn?

Actually, I would like to see what David Yates would do with Breaking Dawn. He, of course, directed HP and the Half-Blood Prince and is currently directing HP and the Deathly Hallows. The trailers for HP and the Half-Blood Prince look amazing, and I have read some awesome reviews by some who have seen pre-screenings of the movie. Can’t wait for it to come out!

I really like Chris Weitz also, and am very eager to see New Moon. Wouldn’t mind having him back for Breaking Dawn.

I still can’t get excited over David Slade however. I am really worried about how he will handle Eclipse.

Interesting. And he doesn’t look at it as a missed opportunity? Yeah, right. I could definitely see him directing BD. I think he’d do a great job. Wouldn’t that be lovely? =)

I’m surprised he didn’t jump at the chance to direct Twilight. It would be interesting to think what he would do with Breaking Dawn, for me BD is not children’s fare at all.
I too am still concerned about Eclipse, and really curious as to who will be cast as Riley, Leah and Seth my favorite wolf.

I’m with everyone here, all the HP films have been amazingly done, in my opinion, and the one coming out this July seems to be no exception. We haven’t seen NM yet, but we’re all excited about what CW has done so far, the concern for Eclipse is still there for me, I’ll be seeing 30 Days of Night this weekend, I shall see how DS is like! Yikes?!

  • Chris

Chelle, I wish I had the guts to watch either of DS movies but I can’t take gore. Let me know what you think of the movie after you see it and that will help shed a little light on what to expect for Eclipse >

  • Chelle

Chris, I’m not particularly looking forward to see it, just desperate to see what DS is all about and where the creative mind of his resides, I’ll be watching it in the daytime =)

With the right director BD is going to be awesome Each one has their own insight to what makes for a good story and plays on the screen.. Comment to Chris and Chelle I saw 30 dayy of night and yes it was gorey the only romance in it was at the end???//*@@ I am sure that DS will do justice to eclipse since Melissa is writing the screenplay

He would be great doing BD! I think he really missed out with Twilight… Who cares about I love you Beth Cooper!??! Seriously… But I guess you can’t be working on something and tell them to stop because something better came along, like he’d pick it up when he could because it wasn’t an epic film. So props for sticking with what you had but I’m sorry he didn’t take it! I hope he does BD, I think he would do it justice!!!

another thing relating HP to twilight…
but i think it would be nice to have breaking dawn directed by a HP director.. probably alfonso cuaron (HP3), the most loved HP director.. or maybe david yates can do it, he’s really good in bringing out the character in everyone of his actors.. i think he’s done well in the upcomng HP6 film..
