‘BREAKING DAWN’: THE BATTLE

Posted May 2nd, 2009 By: Team Switzerland 40 Comments »

Q. Why the big build-up for the fight that didn’t happen?

A. I’m not the kind of person who writes a Hamlet ending. If the fight had happened, it would have ended with 90% of the combatants, Cullen and Volturi alike, destroyed. There was simply no other outcome once the fight got started, given the abilities and numbers of the opposing sides. Because I would never finish Bella’s story on such a downer—Everybody dies!—I knew that the real battle would be mental.

I loved the battle with Bella. I loved that Bella was the one who really saved everyone. She never saw herself as worthy enough for Edward and this just proved to her what Edward always saw in her. I just hope that Breaking Dawn is made into a movie. I think it will be tough but its is diffently possible.

  • kailee

I was really ticked about the final battle in Breaking Dawn, or may I say lack of one. With such a build up to the final battle there needed to be some physicallity between the characters. I really wanted there to be a battle, but all I was left with was a letdown. I don’t think there would be much of a winner perhaps. Maybe just a raising of the white flag, and a Cullen or two killed. I didn’t like the whole mention of Shakespeare by Steph cause she has no right to compare Hamlet to the Twilight saga.

  • Elodie

I would have appreciated a physical confrontation too. But seeing any Cullen dead is not worth it.
Kailee – read the post again. She is not comparing the two.

  • Kelly

    yea, I agree with amanda.
she proved herself worthy of the family and may be “even” now inher mind! I am sooo gald she wrote it like this. sometimes, mental battles are soo much tougher than physical battles.

The battle scene was a complete cop out. She says that if there were to be a battle, 90% of the Cullens + Co would HAVE to die?
    Really?
    I just don’t believe that.
It may have been tearful but even one loss from our Cullen clan and co would have made the ‘fight scene’ (if i can call it that) better.
Sacrafice could have made Breaking Dawn an OK book.

  • robiewankenobie

good gravy. i hope i’m not going to get flamed for this…and keep in mind that i’ve still read it a gazillion times…

with all the build up? all the cool powers of the visiting vampires paired with those of the volturi? it would have been awesome. she managed to do a similar thing at the end of eclipse, i don’t know why she didn’t think that she could pull it off in breaking dawn. the end was just so over the top absurd. i still think of the first books as the perfect trilogy, and the last as the batsh*t crazy one she wrote when she was given a lot of money and very little (or very little constructive) editing. it is hilarious and awesome in a “bella is a better vampire than you” way, but it is absurd. the battle at the end just wrapped up all the crazy in a neat little package. luckily? i’m a fan of the crazy.

there’s no way, that if stephanie killed a single cullen, we would have forgiven her. how could we? and not to mention, if she did, she wouldn’t have stopped writing. because then we’d want to know how everyone lived with themselves when one of them died. or what happened to renesmee and jacob. or the partner that lost their loved one.
i do believe the good side could have won. i came up with a plan of what they could have done, to win. and not have any casualties, but i’m glad there was no fight, if stephanie believed almost everyone would die.

  • ReeYees

I was also dissapointed that we didn’t see a final battle at the end of Breaking Dawn. I don’t agree with her on the possible outcome of the battle. Given all the elements that she had already written, the scene was set for a spectacular battle that would outdo what we saw in Eclipse.

I saw the battle so clearly in my head, I had to write it out. Its been posted as a one-shot in the forum. You can find it here:

I think it was perfect just the way it is , get the big picture. I think everything and everyone was brought together for this outcome. I think everyones story and what happened to them all even the bad things was for a reason. I love her refrences from those other books it makes sense. It is not about the battle , it’s about the happy ever after. The best of the series is the first and last book , The end was great it made me very happy with that conclusion. This is soulfull and deep what she has done with this series, people first are obsessed but if you look closer their is so much to this story and that is why I think so many adults like this too.

I came to the Twilight books late, I read them all over November and December, 2008. I had read of some controversy over Breaking Dawn before I read it and I am still dumbfounded as to why.

I’m not sure why someone would desire there to be death. I don’t really consider myself as a pacifist, just that this entire story, all the books together, was a love story, not an action story. I thought Stephenie did an amazing job of not only bringing certain story lines all the way from Twilight through to the end of BD, but creating a truly painful expectation of Bella and Edward not living and therefore not seeing Renesmee reach maturity and life with Jacob. Not to mention they would lose the eternity of loving each other they both had expected to have.

I have read this book several times, and it always grabs me emotionally in several spots. Even more so than New Moon. There are so many moments in the book that are beyond fabulous, but OK, this thread is about the non-gory ending.

I thought the ending was exactly right. This love story is different from others. It didn’t have to have a sad ending to be good. I am thinking so many other authors chose the easy way out. Kill, and kill some more. Kill a few good guys, leave a few too. I think for the battle to exist mentally, to be able to avoid gore (no blood to shed except for the wolves), took a great deal more thought and creativity than having half or more of each group dead when it was all said and done. I thought (and still think) the suspense building up to just before Alice arrives with the evidence Aro needed to back away was palpable. It was believable. If you didn’t know the ending before, you could see it was possible for Aro to still decide to try to kill Renesmee and therefore cause the fight to happen.

I think both sides would have lost members. I can’t say who I believe would have died in the Cullen family, but probably at least Emmett as he would be one so willing to fight. I still do not have any love for Rosalie and would not have minded her being taken out, but any of the others, it just would have been too painful. (I would have minded Emmett dying, I just think he would have been likely.)

As for comparisons to Shakespeare, yes I can see it. As for someone to say Stephenie had no right? Are you serious? She never, ever tried to put her work in a catagory with Shakespeare. She only said she was influenced by his work. I thought the non-physical battle was much better than dead people everywhere. These stories are different. That is one of the reasons they have become so successful. No formula.

I have said before, Breaking Dawn is my favorite of the four. Actually, going in reverse, Twilight is my least favorite, but I love all the books so much, they are really altogether at the top.

I just don’t know what else you would expect from Stephenie. The ending was just what it should be.

  • http://twilightersanonymus.com kiki

i wasn’t all that happy that no one got hurt, but like stephenie meyer, an ending of everyone dying wouldn’t be so great, and i’m glad she ended up with “forever”,it was so cute i wish it never ended.

  • abbi

I love how so many people say that they disagree with Stephenie Meyer that 90% of the characters would die. If that’s the only way she could see it, that’s the only way she would have written it. It’s her story that she has shared with everyone. Take it or leave it’s not your decision to make.

And personally I LOVED Breaking Dawn but I was disappointed that there was no fight. Even if Bella had to build up to protecting them after they first attacked it would have been more satisfying but I’m not the author.

  • ReeYees

I prefer to think that she only saw that particular outcome out of laziness or a desire to emulate the ending of another novel. There would never be a better time to remove the Volturi from power.

And that would have allowed another book in the series, dealing with the consequences of a world without the Volturi. Bella’s story could continue as the Cullen family must adjust to their newfound celebrity/royalty status for having eliminated the Volturi, with new threats coming from the Southern clans, who are now left unchecked.

  • Twilight Mom Australia

The ending in”Breaking Dawn” was as it should be….
The build up to the battle, Alice and Jaspers disappearance was exciting and fantastic, that Bella had a shield to protect her family , what Amanda Everts said about Bella thinking she is not worthy of Edward and now she has proved what Edward always saw in her, is perfect. No, for me the ending of “Breaking Dawn” was not a letdown, it was a relief. I loved that Bella was able to let Edward into her thoughts and memories that was a perfect ending to a perfect Love Story ever written. If any of the Cullen would have died, I would have been very upset and very very disappointed. Thank you Stephanie, every time that I read “Breaking Dawn, I close the book with a big satisfying smile.

  • creamy

I have to respond to the comment about Stephenie being lazy. I laughed out loud at this thought.

Do you realize this woman wrote Twilight with three small children to care for by herself? She took care of them during the day, and typed after they were in bed.

To do this with just one small child would have been amazing. But three? It was monmumental. I don’t know how she could create two coherent thoughts together, much less write four books. And to have them be the books we all love?

She is almost superhuman herself. If you haven’t been responsible for caring for small children, all day and all night, you just can’t imagine. You have NO idea. And for her to still have the clarity of mind and energy to WRITE BOOKS! No way does lazy figure into that. You are just mistaken.

  • twilightfan14

While I was reading Breaking Dawn, I thought that it would end with the Cullens killing or severly thinning the Volturi. But, if any of the Cullens had been killed off, it would have seriously diluted the love story that everybody wanted to see end happily. How could Bella and Edward be happy if one of their family were dead for good? It just wouldn’t have worked. Plus, this way, if Stephenie wanted to pick up this story again, we will then get the ending of the Volturi and the Cullens would be the royalty. I would love to read that!

  • fragilehuman

I loved BD. It was my favorite of all the books. I agree with Creamy’s response whole heartedly. I loved the fact that there was no actual battle, and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I was extreamly releaved when the Volturi headed home. None of the vampires really wanted to engage in battle, but they stood by their friends anyway. I almost feel like there are certain aspects of these very interesting relationships that most of us would envy. I also am excited that the door was left open for several opportunities of a new story – with all the charactors in tact! Thank you Stephanie, for a perfect ending.

  • twicoholic14

I love the mental battle in Breaking Dawn. When they were preparing themselves for the fight and saying good-bye, I was sad, worried, and angry that it would end with the lost of charcters, even the ones from the Volturi. Of course, I could guess that it would end well, but still. The mental fight is much more real and entertaining. I was struggling as much as Bella was, and worrying about her family. It’s a powerful thing. I love Stephenie’s references to Shakespeare in the books, I love Sheakespeare! I’ve read the Merchant of Venice, and love how that clue in BD, was connected. So I love every decision Stephenie made!

  • http://www.myspace.com/brans1981 Brandi

I absolutely love BD – it’s my favorite in the saga. I think that Stephenie did great with the battle scene. I didn’t want to see any of the Cullens die off – well, maybe Rosalie (haha), but even if she died what would Emmett do? No, leave them all there. :) I was glad to see that Bella had a gift and that she protected all of the rest of the Cullens. I don’t think that Stephenie could have done it any better than what she did.

  • joni rena

I LOVED BREAKING DAWN! THE BATTLE ended good it leaves room for more books to be written if she wants to in the future. It was a great ending .I really hope it becomes a movie to . edward was always saving bella and so bell was finally going to be able to try to give back to the family she loved so much.

  • spiritblue

… first of all…i hope that someday creamy starts writing…professionally… i love reading her comments… secondly..i totally agree with both of her posts…and lastly…as the build up of the fight began so did the beating of my heart…and as the ” fight ” ended through tears, i literally shouted out loud ” THANK GOD

  • aanch

the battle was a big part of the last book
if i remember clearly a big chunk of the book
    was preparing for the battle
    and then it went
    lets make a mental battle
    show bellas not weak anymore,
    thats all it meant
a cullen didnt have to die
there were soo many people on their side
    on of the reasons
the volturi gave up so fast
    either way it seemed like
all 3 books bella constantly needed support
    now lets make it better
let her have a mental battle
    it was really dissapointing
i did like the beginning of breaking dawn
    especially the wedding

  • calilyfsabeach

I can’t believe people are complaining about a book. I can’t understand how people can say “I love Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse…but Breaking Dawn sucked because I didn’t like the outcome.”
Then you know what, you are not a Twilight fan. Twilight isn’t just about the first three books, it is the whole series together. You cannot pick and choose to hate one book and still say you are a fan. These are STEPHENIE’S creations…not Jack’s, Bob’s, Jane’s or anyone else’s! If you don’t like the books, then don’t read them. No need to complain or criticize. I’d like to see one of you think of something better and actually have it sound right. Maybe you can do it while raising children and taking care of a household at the same time and tell me how that works out.
    Get over yourselves.

  • creamy

    spiritblue: Thank you very much.

  • http://wldflower44 Sharon

Theres is nothing wrong with the way the book ended. It was nice not having a lot of destruction for a change. I also feel it left the ending open just enough that if Stephenie wanted to continue with this saga she could do so. There’s so much potential and she is the only one who can give it to us the way it is ment to be. I just finished the the books for the second time and had a diffrent out look at the end. I felt a lot more compassion for Jacob this time around.

  • ashlyn

everyone is so upset about the ending; but i found it actually the way i wanted it to be.
so what if no fight happened? do you guys seriously want someone to die? what if it was edward? or emmett? or even esme? and you can’t just have one person die. stephenie’s point is right. you’d need 10 people and more to die in a fight between the most powerful vampire clan and the Volturi!
and also, who cares if there was a better way in your opinion to end the book? stephenie is the author, not you!
i love breaking dawn – it’s my favorite out of the whole series.

  • robiewankenobie

reeyees! i loved the fanfic. that’s a lot closer to what went down in my head regarding the battle. i think that readers should be allowed to use their imaginations, and visualize different outcomes for books. i’ve always done that. don’t any of you think about what is happening with everyone now that the series is done?

  • Joz

I was kind of happy the way it turned out. I was looking forward to the fight, but I was also scared for everyone (except the volturi). Now I stuck with this question in the back of my head: “What would have happened if the fight did happen?”

  • Angie

I loved “breaking dawn” just as much at the other three and I have read and re-read them at leat four times each and will start again reading them on monday but I have to agree about the final battle in this book bella really did not understand why edward loved her and found her so amazing and she had to prove to herself that she belonged with him and his family sho with that finding out she had a supernatural power to take care of her family she finnaly understood what edward saw in her and when she learned how to let him see in to her thought because she was unale to tell him in words was just the perfect ending.

I would like to know what happend to jacob and nessie and how the whole family get along when they end up together when she comes of age I can only guess and that helps.
But for all of you out there that are missing the big battle a mental battle is more appelaing than a fisical battle this take more of the power to think than that of terring and burning it was a better way to end the book then with someone we all love dieing.

on a personal note I can say the the author has such a good imagination and I completly understand the work thing with three you children but her book gave me the escape that I needed after being a full time mom all day and my dreams we like I was the main charater in the book. I hated to get up and lose the dream.

  • full_forever

I really like the battle a lot. I especially enjoyed how Bella turned out to be the most powerful, and the one that saved everyone. I had no problem with the battle being only mental; after all, we’ve had a bit of more physical confrontations in eclipse.
One of the things that I liked the most about breaking dawn was how other vampires were willing to die to help the cullens, though Im not sure why.
and no, Ive never read the merchant of venice so to me, alice ripping a page off that book didnt really mean anything special lol, sorry!

  • Nim

Well, often is the Twilight-series compared to Romeo and Julitet, Romeo and Juliet would not been at all famous if it wasn’t for the tradic ending. When this generation dies out, breaking dawn will be forgotten, since it has no action in it and was a wast of time for stephenie to writ it. Nothing dos really happend, it’s a lack og a climaks and again Bella is the supergirl who survive everything just perfect. (after got her legg broken by james she could walk after the summer, a normal person would not ha done so in that short time)

I pretend the series ends with eclipse. And I love the three first books, but I wish som bad I never read BD, I did put it in a trash bin after reading it.

If stephene thought 90% of the cullens would died in the fight, I would have prefered that isted of no battle. Anyhow she was the writer, couldn’t she just write somthing else? that the fightet down the volturi, og the voulturi ran away? The ending she wrote was just at unlikely as thos exsamples. The way she have wroted about Aro, he would never left there without a big big battel.
HELLO, he killed his own sister for power, and her sister was Marcus’ (one of his closest pal)wife.

BD was really a letdown, I was looking so forward to read it but I was soooooooo disapointed.

  • Melissa, Brazil (RS)

I agree with Kelly and how they believe the “mental battle” is much more difficult. It is like playing chess … You have to be alert to any movement of the opponent, try to imagine queal will be your next move, his new strategy and try to cancel it. The “battle” was actually better than I expected, or better, for I do not want to see any of Cullen dead, silly me? Maybe, but they would not be the most Cullen … But the Volturi would have nothing to its 3,000 years, are old and rapozas like much of power and status in which they are to risk a physical battle, so it has so many “talents” to his back … The battle left me mentally and instigated much more anxious than if they were “physical” one thing “hit” agree … Mel

  • Amber

I think it’s kind of sadistic to be let down after reading Breaking Dawn because of the lack of bloodshed. I mean, Steph’s right, there would be no way to have a huge battle without almost everybody dying. I felt relieved after the battle, not let down. I mean, that’s what we all should want right? A happily ever after. Who wants everyone to die just as they’re life together begins?? That would have been completely disappointing.

  • Dawn

What is wrong with happily ever after? We don’t get enough of that anymore!

  • Andy

Would anyone else have loved to seen Rose beat the crap out of Heidi?

  • skullangel

I would have wanted to see a mental fight between Jane and Bella, the two have practically been at each others throats…

If there are any battle parings

    Kate Vs. Jane
Mental Against Physical Pain, I think Jane is too reliant on her mental powers, beaten to granite by Kate

    Vladimir Vs. Alec
Alec is a bit old but can do a good fight, Very young vs very old in the end torn apart by Garret the Patriot

    Tanya Vs Caius
Tanya would make a vendetic fight of it, I think

    Edward Vs Aro
    Close in fight

    Emmett Vs. Demitri
    What Emmett wants he gets…

    Rosalie (Ice Queen) vs Chelsea
Raw emotion vs A manipulator the perfect fight, Rose is dangerous in close quarters tear Chelsea apart since she is maybe unused to close in fighting always in supporting role.

    Role of Wolves:
Equal to Cavalry taking out all the guards and holding anyone at bay
Although Sam and Paul would want a peace of Caius or Aro

    On Support
Zafrina Bella and Benjamin guarded by young Shapeshifters led by Seth which I see Seth being very good in this role…

All in all the greatest threat in this fight is the coordinated attacks of the wolves.

    Who is left out…
Jaspers friends and the other Amazons…
    and The “fighting” Irish

All in all the Volturi can be routed.

Edward is right the Volturi now are for the first time SCARED. They think an Alliance is in the offing the greatest threat… The LA PUSH Wolves! who attack in a very coordinated measure.

If there is any other threat after this it would come from Nessie and Jakes kid, who i have a feeling would be the most powerfull threat to the Volturi… An immortal shapeshiter… Rock hard and indestructable…

  • sirjames8

I LOVED all the books including Breaking Dawn, But Would like a battle Between the Volturi scum and the Cullens and their Allies. In Breaking Dawn, I think the Mental battle started getting scary (a bit) for Aro when he heard, for the first time in millenia, His opposition dividing up whom they were planning on taking down. Page 729 Everyone is choosing targets Zafrina chooses Bella’s defense (Psi and Physical), Kate chooses Jane, Bella assigns Edward to Demetri, and the others are busy divvying them up when not only does Alice bring the key witnesses/situation diffusers, but suddenly, Alice, Jasper and Kachiri and maybe Nahuel and Huilen are there to take on Volturi opponents! This changes the balance of power.

    32 Volturi- 5 noncombatatants: Jane, two wives, Alec(probably a weak fighter),Chelsea (busy keeping bonds strong) = 27
AND this means that Aro,Caius, and Marcus HAVE to fight. One of them could be killed? Unthinkable! Better to wait for another time, as they did.
    8 Cullens + 4 Denali + 3 Aamazons + 2 Romanians + Benjamin, Tia and Garrett= 20 – 2 noncombatants Bella and Benjamin = 18
PLUS 16 huge (10 horse sized wolves) Now we’re looking at 28 major fighters and 6 minor on the Cullens side vs 27 or less on the Volturi!

  • ninja warrior

In a way,I would’ve enjoyed a bloody and insane way to end it.I wouldn’t want the Cullen’s to die, they’re the main vampires. And Bella was telling the story from the original “Twilight”.But,they shouldn’t have gotten that “happy ending”,’cause not everything comes with a happy ending.I think Renesmee should’ve died instead of Irina. And left Bella and Edward to mourn, and Alice and Jasper has an accident, and Alice falls in love with Demetri and joins the Volturi.Jasper falls in love with Esme and sleeps with Rosalie.Emmett and Carlisle go to Mexico and snuggle dope into the U.S.A.I’m just saying! How can you film a “mental battle” for a movie?Personnaly,I wanted to see Alec’s powers not work and get killed by his own sister! For being weak! And Didyme comes back to Marcus and the wolves kill Cauis.Something funny!Of course my “ending” would really screw it up,huh? And put Jacob and Leah together!Sorry!I have an acctive imagination:)

  • Cpinotsis

Well the truth is that I expected more for the finalle. The mental fight was good, but that should be the trigger for the physical fight. The Cullens should be the one who win since they would have so much help but not without casualties. Some of the werewolves would die, and some of the other clans’ vampires. And from the Cullen family… Maybe Rosalie or Emmet trying to protect her. Anyway it’s just a thought but the truth is a fight would be great in the movie

  • Sjmutchie

I was rather glad there was no battle; my precious Volturi can live on!
