‘BREAKING DAWN’: WHO IS EMBRY’S FATHER?

Posted August 8th, 2009 By: Team Switzerland 12 Comments »

Q. Who is Embry’s father?

A. I don’t know who Embry’s father is. I’m aware that this lack of knowledge is annoying to some people. I’m sorry that I haven’t been able to explain myself in more detail—that’s one of the drawbacks of interviews. You don’t know what you will be asked, you don’t have much time to come up with an answer, and if you give an answer that is too long, they cut it down into a form that doesn’t make sense. So you have to think on your feet and speak in sound bites. I’m not great at either.

I’m going to try to explain what it means when I say that I don’t know something, or that a character hasn’t revealed some part of himself to me. Those statements are both shorthand answers for a long and complicated explanation that doesn’t work for a sound bite or a stage presentation. No two people write the same way, so I don’t know if this will make sense to anyone else…

Questions:

Have you ever wondered who Embry’s father is?

What do you think about Stephenie’s answer to this question? Does her method of thinking make sense to you?

Does it surprise you that Stephenie doesn’t know this information about her own character?

Who do you think Embry’s father is and why?

Sometimes I wonder how Stephanie Meyer is actually deemed a writer. So much is left unresolved or unexplained at the end of Breaking Dawn. Why even bring up the case of Embry’s paternity if you aren’t going to further explore it?

  • claire

    Melanie:
In my opinion, she brought up the paternity because it’s part of Bella’s story. She is writing from Bella’s point of view – not like an all knowing narrator who sees the big picture. How many times are questions in our lives left unanswered. As people, we don’t always find out the answers to everything but those unanswered questions are still apart of our stories. Does that make sense?

  • Summer

I agree with Claire, the books are written from Bella’s perspective and Bella doesn’t know, and hasn’t been presented with that information yet. And it sounds like no one in the story knows. Just because you’re the author doesn’t mean you necessarily know every detail of your story world. Things develop at different times, and new story lines present themselves. Maybe 10 years from now she might want to explore that story line, but at this point, it’s not a significant part of the stories that she has written. I understand what she means.

  • Aoife

I agree completely with Melanie. I completely enjoyed all the books and I am a big fan of them, but I believe she ought to have read into the matter of Embry’s paternity more.
For instance, if J.K. Rowling (author of Harry Potter) is asked a question about her characters, the answer is always there. She knows her characters inside and out.

  • Chantell

I completely agree with Claire and Summer – it’s not necessary (and sometimes not even relevant) to know everything about a fictional world – yours or someone else’s – it’s not much different from our real world. And it makes perfect sense to me how Stephenie writes, especially since none of her writing is from an omnipotent POV but rather a character’s POV.

Most authors leave some questions, theories, story lines, etc. unanswered so that at a later date they can continue with more books. Leaving yourself options is always the smartest way!

I like it alot actually, that we don’t know for certain who Embry’s father is. Don’t get me wrong – it bugs me that I don’t know but this not knowing mirrors real life. “All the answers” are not filled in for us and there are things we’ll never know for certain. It leaves a mystery and lets us speculate.

I’m going to say that “after” Billy’s wife died, he sought comfort elsewhere and fathered Embry. And that’s why Jake and Embry are so close without knowing it. Disagree if you’d like but no one knows and thats the story I’m sticking with. =)

I think Stephanie did a great job and maybe she left the questions unanswered for a new book! I hope any way. Breaking Dawn is my favorite one out of them all. After reading it 6 times I still do not feel like the story was left undone. I do feel that it was written and ended with the chance of more to come.Keep them coming Stefanie!!

i agree totally with Claire, Bella’s point of view isn’t supposed to know everything, nobody knows everything about everyone

  • liltwilightnerd

Basically the book is on Bella’s point of view and when it goes to Jacob’s point of view he doesn’t get himself enough time to explain about Embry’s father. Stephanie cannot always explain every characters past specifically, no other authors can when it comes to a novel. I guess some things are left to be unsaid when it comes to who’s Embry’s father and what’s so great about novels.

Stephanie’s answer makes perfect sence to me… She was consumed with the lead story and all of he supporting stories to back up the lead, so, this character was not illuminated. However, when re-visited in a new book after “Breakin Dawn” (Maybe “a new version of: “Forever Dawn”) with more on Renesseme, and Leah and their lives, then some of that “back story” could be introduced and cover some of Leah’s connections with the pack. I also hope that more of the Volturi will surface and even another battle were maybe this time the twist will be that the Cullen Family succeeds in bringing more Vampires into there way of life … If I could have a sit down with Stephanie, I would make some suggestions, in the hope that she would do a book that could be filmed in the next few years, so that we do not loose the characters or the stories…. *We could have cameo’s of Bella, Edward, and the others if their age is too old for the story line, but – well I would love to discuss it with her.

Although I understand she wants to keep an air of mystery about her characters, presenting them as somewhat brooding and secretive, how can she honestly not KNOW?! I love the whole twilight series (no i will not call it a saga, what is that?)
Stephenie, the concept of the story is breath taking, that’s why people refer to it as (sorry about the stereotypical american word) phenomenon, but you haven’t sorted your ideas. There’s so much unanswered, and the fact that you don’t know the answer yourself just bemuses me entirely. I mean, the Alice back story is incomplete, as is the Leah story, and you build Seth up to this huge role, and then he sort of disappears? And this too?
Sorry for the essay, but to round off, i understand the book is based on the forbidden love of this almighty vampire and a fragile human, but honestly, by the time we reached the fourth book, we are sick of hearing about the intense beauty of Edward Cullen. You’ve introduced these complex, interesting, compelling characters.
PLEASE EXPLAIN THEM TO US! =)
