‘BREAKING DAWN’ – WHY THE NAME RENESMEE?

Posted September 5th, 2009 By: 24 Comments »

Q. Why the name Renesmee?

A. Well, I couldn’t call her Jennifer or Ashley. What do you name the most unique baby in the world? I looked through a lot of baby name websites. Eventually I realized that there was no human name that was going to work for me, so I surrendered to necessity and made up my own. I don’t approve of such shenanigans in real life, I don’t even believe in getting creative with spellings for real kids! But this was fantasy, and no human name fit, so I did the best I could. I named Renesmee so long ago—Fall 2003—that the name now sounds really natural to me. It wasn’t until people started mentioning it that I remembered, “Oh, yeah, it is a weird name, isn’t it?”

- Stephenie Meyer

I agree that a regular name would have seemed too plain. The first time I read the name Renesmee i thought it was interesting and I really like it. I don’t really care one way or another if people make up names for their children or not. I have 3 children of my own so it really is a difficult process to decide the perfect name for your child. I’m waiting to see how many people name their children after the characters in the Twilight Saga. I’m sure Renesmee will be used in a few homes. lol

i LOVED the name from the first time i read it, its beautiful and unique.. just like Renesmee. =]]

  • Midori

I totally agree with Stephenie with the name Renesmee. It had to be a unique name for a unique child. I like the thought of having parts of both grandmother’s name Renee and Esme.

  • Cheryl

I think Stephenie chose the perfect name. Bella loves Renee and Esmee so much it just seems fitting that she’d want to combined it for a new love in her life.

  • Toshona

I thought using Renesemee was very unique..to me it added to the Fantasy. I do believe its ok to make up baby names in the real world.. but as far as Breaking Dawn goes..the way Stephanie had Bella come up with the name was awesome.

  • becky

I think it fits! Plus she is the only Grandchild any of the Grandparents will ever have. A fitting tribute!

  • aerialla

I guess I’ll be the bad guy again. I thought and do think the name sucks and lacks imagination. You can’t tell me that there is not one name in the world that would not have been better than the one she made up.

  • kristin

It’s a sweet and unique name .. but I don’t like it so much .. is a little bit ugly … sorry

  • Cindy

I LOVE the name Renesmee is such a great combo of the grandmother’s: Rene and Esme. And the middle name as well Carlie after the grandfather’s: Carlisle and Charlie. Wonderful use of names. Great job Mrs. Myer!!!

  • Donna

I loved the name the first time I read it. It was so fitting to name the unique little girl after the two mothers who are unique in their own way. I like different spellings for names, it really shows individuality of the person.

I love the name Renesmee. It made perfect sense to me. I think it is Perfect and I love the nickname Nessie. Using both mother’s names was creative and the middle name, Carlie was Perfect, also, blending Carslile and Charlie. Stephenie is brilliant.

  • Neana

I thought it was because of Bella and Edwards mothers; Renee and Esme lol. LOVE the name Renesmee though. Well done Stephenie.

  • emmy

Havent we already had this one? or maybe it feels like that coz ive read through Steph’s FAQ already. Yeah, i love the name Renesmee. It doesn’t sound weird anymore at all to me, although most people would go “Huh?” And of course, what WOULD you name the most unique baby in the world? Hear hear, Stephenie Meyer.

  • renae

when i first read the name “Renesemee” i had to read it a few times before actually being about to pronounce the name.
after getting use to it, i fell in love with the name. but its not a name i would use for my future kids or something, it is just a beautiful name.
its a good thing that Stephenie decided to create her own name for the baby, she is right you cant call the nearly one in existence half-vampire half-human baby something like Ashley or Jenifer. a good combination on Renee and Esme(Renae is my name, just spelled differently. so yeeww)plus i love the middle name Carlie.
i think if you want to call you’re child a curtain name, its you’re choice. if you want to make up a name, go ahead. make it beautiful and meaningful and inspiring to others.

  • Marissa

    I totally disagree.

I hate the name Renesmee. Its like she was really working hard to find a name that would work but she couldn’t so she made a crap name up cuz she was pressed for time. Its not a pretty name and I’d be very upset if that was my name.

Then again I think the fourth book was just blah. Didn’t do it for me. I think the books should have ended on eclipse. That was definitely the best book by far. It had the right amount of action and suspense and all the mushy love scenes too.

But Renesmee is a stupid name and its like seriously? That wasn’t creative at all. That was just laziness by putting two names together. Why not put rosalie and alice together you get another ugly and stupid name; rosalice.
Its a dumb idea to put two names together that aren’t supposed to be together. And renesmee is just a bad idea all together.

  • Jessica

It makes sense that Bella would name her half vamp/half human kid after the human and vamp she loves most besides Edward as a tribute, but I agree with Marissa. It’s kinda stupid and not very creative. If she really wanted a creative name she could have looked for Latin and Greek words and create a name based off of that, like J.K. Rowling, the author of Harry Potter, did for her character’s names and spells.

  • Kelly

i think that Marissa and Jessica are both wrong i love the name and i love al the books but i think Jessica was kind of right i wouldn’t have ended on Breaking Dawn either i would never ended the books i love them so much and i think that she should have kept writing more books iv read the whole set 4 times now in a row each time i finish a book i go straight to the next. I even read on the bus to school!!!!
    I know what a nerd right x x
But most of all i love the romance between Bella and Edward i think its great and if nothing else happened in the book that would be fine with me x x x
Robert is sooooo (i dont know the words) amazing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the name Renesmee is a beautiful name however Carlie hasn't grown on me. Names are for people can come from anywhere and it makes no difference if its a 'real' name or not, as long as it works.

  • Tammygirl2726

I don't care for the name myself but its a book so it really doesn't matter. It was just interesting to get the correct pronunciation of the name. I do have to comment though on the person who said they should have stopped with Eclipse…that is just crazy! Every book is magical and amazing in its own right, but Breaking Dawn had everything we were waiting for since the start of the series. I couldn't imagine not knowing the details of the wedding and Bella's transformation. The whole series was perfection….just wish there were more!!!!

  • LauraLizzie

I love the name Renesmee, I really think it is great, but I disagree that names should be proper in real life, even though ordinary 'real' names are cool it is just nice to have a name that is unique and works.
Who said that it should have been stopped at Eclipse?! Whoever it was is crazy! You can't just leave it like that, Breaking Dawn is the best.
I totally agree that Renesmee is the right name and that Marissa or any other name would not work, but maybe that is just because I am used to knowing her as Renesmee but an ordinary name for her would just be ridiculous for someone who is not normal.

i can think of a thousand strange, weird names off the top of my head. I think what Meyer did just proved how uncreative she is.
And my children will all have strange names. I’m pregnant now and am considering Phoenix for a boy and Wyntir or Gypsy for a girl. I have a strange name myself, as does all my siblings. It’s better to be unique than normal.

I totally agree. She could have made it something witty and beautiful, but no…she went for the fail renesmee.
At least tshe didnt name her a combo of her and edward´s name…bedward! <—Gah, that would ahve been even more awful!!!
