New Moon Extra: ‘Miscalculation’

I honestly missed Edward, too. I missed his cutting little remarks, the black wit that was more in harmony with my own dark sense of humor than Emmett’s sunny, jokey nature. I missed the music – his stereo blaring out his latest indie discovery, and the piano, the sound of Edward weaving his usually remote thoughts into transparency through song. I missed him humming beside me while we tuned the cars, the only time we were perfectly in sync.

I missed my brother.

As this is an account of Rosalie’s thoughts, without subterfuge, my only surprise (and not much of it) was that she admitted to herself on missing Edward. However, this small portion of longing was completely buried, as in an avalanche, by all the true and overriding self-centered thoughts that are always a part of Rosalie. I have trouble seeing past Rosalie’s self-absorption. I can believe she missed Edward’s ability to help alleviate her boredom, but not that she missed HIM.

She dismissed his love for Bella. How could he love a human? Especially when he refused to change her. It couldn’t be true love in that case. In her mind, he wasn’t capable of loving someone to the degree that she loved Emmett. Or so she thought. Even if she never wanted Edward in a romantic way, she still resented not having his adoration. She resented not having HIS longing for her. Especially as he was alone with no one to fill that romantic void.

Yes, I could feel the jealousy toward Bella as it related to Alice. Again, Bella is a human, and Alice clearly preferred her over Rosalie. During the family meeting the day Edward saved Bella from the van, Alice not only forced Edward to realize his feelings for Bella, but she declared her own. Rosalie was furious that they both wanted Bella. Only by the intervention of Carlisle did she not go and kill Bella that day. Of course she used the excuse of protecting the family, but Edward and Carlisle both saw through that pretense.

As for true remorse concerning the phone call, no, I don’t buy it. Alice didn’t buy it either. Alice was always pretty easy going, she put up with Rosalie due to the fact their world was pretty limited. She didn’t have a chance to have friends. Then Bella came into the picture and changed that equation. Alice was no longer restricted to Rosalie for girlfriend type things. I just don’t believe Rosalie cared enough for Edward or Alice to take in consideration their grief when she made that phone call. I believe she was only thinking of how Edward’s absence was disrupting the family. Even Rosalie could not deny that Edward was first in the hearts of Esme and Carlisle. When she ran screaming for Emmett, I think she was trying to limit her responsibility for what was about to happen. As in everything, Rosalie was thinking of Rosalie.

I am suprised at one thing: That Rosalie missed Edward. I never knew about the connection between them and it was nice to see. However no I don’t buy it. It was obvious Rosalie was trying to convince herself she had done the right thing, dismissing Edward’s love for Bella because she’s human and thinking that everything will be the same. But she knows that this is not right otherwise why does she keep trying to think to herself that she has done the right thing?

Does she not remember her and Emment? She found him as a human and knew that she loved him, does that mean their love was weak until he became a vampire? Again she’s just looking out for number one and does not see things Edward’s way or Bella’s way. Why does she think Edward’s been depressed ever since he left Bella? Would he just do that for a “human pet”?

I honestly didn’t think about Rosalie being jealous about Alice and Bella’s friendship but now I think it’s pretty obvious. As mentioned, Rosalie obviously doesn’t like change. To her it’s simple: She’s beautiful and she has her family. She actually says it in this extra: “At least I had my beauty.” Bella changes everything, the fact that Edward finds her more attractive, the fact that the attention is on Bella and not Rosalie and the fact that she is human. It’s unknown to Rosalie and it’s obvious that she does not like change.

Everything I read the Twilight Saga I try to see her in a new light, but I still don’t buy it. To me, she’s still self-centred and doesn’t care about anyone else: as long as she “has her beauty.”

This is awesome! I love reading the others thoughts on things. I am not surprised at all, of what Rosalie has said. I always new of her jealousy with Bella and Edward. He explains that in Eclipse. Not that SHE wants HIM, just the fact that Edward wants Bella. And yes, I do believe Rosalie misses Edward for the exact reasons she has said. They have that typical brother sister relationship,of fighting, and then when the other one is gone, they miss them terribly. But as far as the phone call goes, now I think she’s scared she messed up, and she is trying to justify it in her own head.

I would imagine she was very smug after the phone call and indeed did it for her own personal gain. I dont think she really thought about Edward all that much when making the phone call, it would be for Rosalie and it was.

I’m not really that surprised, you can see that she does love him through the books, she just doesn’t understand him. In her mind, she is the centre of the universe and she is very jealous of Bella, who is just a human. She doesn’t understand how Edward can love Bella and not her.

I never really thought Rosalie minded who liked her and who didnt. She never came across as someone who cared all that much what people thought of her. I did wonder why Alice and her never went shopping together, as I thought of Rosalie as a girly girl, same as Alice but I just thought Esme and Rosalie did things together so it evened it out for the girl time.

I don’t think she felt true remorse, I think she was shocked that Edward would act the way he did because no one understood his love for Bella less than Rosalie. She is so self centred, she doesnt really see what is going on around her and the consequences of her actions until they hit her in the face, so to speak. I don’t think she cared about Edward’s pain for losing Bella, she just thought he would ‘get over it’ and come home. I am with Alice though, I dont buy Rosalie’s acting of remorse either.

I’m not writing a big thing like the ones above. I loved it. (:

Hmmm – once again I’m struck with the longing for Stephenie to write about ALL of the Cullen’s stories. Rose is a complex – though obviously self centered – character. I know she’s given some of their back stories, but so much goes untold and we can see that she has it in her to, as she put it, “get in their heads.”

Please keep writing about the Cullens Stephenie. We love them!

  • sarah

    it was absolutely amazing :D

  • Helen

Please release Midnight Sun stephenie!!! I really need to read it, so badly!!! I love hearing the story from Edwards point of view, it shapes the story so differently!

I love all the different points of view that Stephenie has introduced to us, and as someone has said, Rosalie is complex, very self-centred but there is more to her I’m sure! I loved hearing Rosalie’s point of view! Very interesting!

  • Edward

I’m really not surprised by Rosalie’s thoughts. I think she has this sort of faux tough exterior. She misses what she can’t have anymore and even though she’s scared to admit it, she does love her family.

  • melissa

it was amazing left me wanting more though wish Stephanie would write more in the views of the other members of the cullens and even charlie it would be nice to know what he was thinking throughout the saga

  • mandy

I roalsei does have rmeose. yes she can be sel-fecntered but th same time she can realize hte nneeds of others.

  • Bkwrm

Any sympathy (however small) I ever had for Rose vanished when I read that. She’s a selfish COW.

The worst part is, she never wanted or loved Edward. She just wanted him to want HER. She wanted him to pine for her.

Even though she has Emmett, who loves her selfish tail (I don’t know why), she can’t stand that Edward actually loves someone else.

Rosalie spent 70 years convincing herself that Edward didn’t love HER because he couldn’t love ANYONE. After all, he rejected Tanya and the other Denalis – he must simply not be able to want a female, right? Any male who rejected HER and Tanya must be unable to love, right?

To guote “Gone With The Wind”, the only remorse Rose feels is the remorse of a thief who’s not sorry she stole, just sorry she’s going to jail. If Edward dies, her family is going to be disrupted. Boo-hoo on poor little Rose.

It never seems to occur to her that Alice and Edward love Bella because she’s more loveable than Rose could ever be.

Uh, I love Jacob’s character the best. :)
But, I do wish you would release Midnight Sun, and do a full book in Jacob’s p.o.v. :)
