New Moon Outtake: ‘Narcotics’:

“Bella, have you ever had Percocet before?”

“I don’t think so,” I giggled. “Why?”

He rolled his eyes and I couldn’t stop laughing.

“How’s your arm?”
“I can’t feel it. Is it still there?”

He sighed as I giggled on. “Try to sleep, Bella.”
“No, I want you to kiss me again.”

“You’re overestimating my self-control.”

I snickered. “Which is bothering you more, my blood or my body?”My question made me laugh.

“It’s a tie.” He grinned in spite of himself.

Actually I had read this outtake before. I am glad that the percocet was taken out. Stephanie still kept in all the lines in another form but I think the audience that she was targeting was not one that drugs should be mentioned. Maybe I am just being a prude but I liked it better with the family rating.

*Snorts* Honestly? No, the humor doesn’t fit with the rest of the mood in New Moon at all. Sure, it was a good laugh, but didn’t fit in with the rest of the chapter… But I do have to agree with Smeyer and how she said the reaction was realistic. Have the editors ever seen someone on those type of pain meds? Or have they ever been on some themselves? I have… And that’s exactly how you act, giggles ‘n all. xD

I kinda like it. I wish there was a little more. It would have been funny to see Bella out of her character a little and see more of Edward’s reaction.

For me, it was definitely the right decision to remove this outtake. Not only did I not find it particularly funny, but, knowing where it took place in the book (or the saga for that matter), I did not want to laugh. At this point, we are rising on the crest of a horribly painful wave. Humor is out of place here. Again, I am only speaking for myself.

I’m not sure about Stephenie’s comment on turning everything into a joke. That may be true, and the editors exercised their skill to remove ill-fitting examples, as with this case. But, one of the things that work for me, over and over, are the well-placed jolts of humor. I love Bella’s words and thoughts. Edward produces some fine examples as well. And it seems that just about everything that came out of Emmett’s mouth was hilarious. Conversely, nothing funny came from Rosalie.

I have so many favorite. In Eclipse when Bella returns home from Edward’s house, and Charlie tries to have a sex talk. I laugh out loud every time. It is so hysterical. I loved early on in Twilight when Mike asked her if she stabbed Edward with a pencil. There are literally dozens of examples, I won’t list them all, you all know them anyway. The humor is wonderful and helps balance the heavy. The romance and the pain. I don’t recall anything humorous that should not have been. Between Stephenie and her editors, I think they got it just right.

This is really funny… all her giggles. I just love the humor in these books, love Bella’s sarcastic humor and love Edward’s old soul reactions. That’s what makes their dialogues so great!

    ahhha that was great !
i liked how Bella was so
out of character, and high ;]
Edward seemed different in this section.
but idk, maybe im loosing my mind :]
    (no im not)

I honestly why she wrote it this way, its typical Bella to think the least of things. I can see her being drugged up and acting silly, but editing it the way they did made it more mysterious and wonder what was going to happen.. i think it was fine the way they left it, it was nice to read this version too.. thanks

  • christy

I enjoyed reading it.. it was different. but im glad they decided to edit it.. it isnt a very funny time, we were getting the feeling something bad was going to happen and the mystery made the book what it was. but thanks for giving us a chance to see it.

  • darlenecullen

Yes,gad it was removed, because I also felt a bad time was coming, and it didn’t seem like Edward would be in the mood for all of Bella’s giggling. It was not a funny time.

  • MommyStarr

I think its a great part.. it adds a little humor in the story and thats what most realtionships need anyway, right?

  • jdhuston

Likewise, I’d read this outtake before and though it’s cute, it is also unnecessary. Edward declares that he is leaving Bella because he was never in love with her…it was more painful reading that Bella thought that was true due to her human side, not because she was silly, rash, clumsy, etc….

I liked the out take. I thought it was cute and funny. However, knowing what was coming (Edward’s departure); I suppose it did not not fit well, and that’s why the editors removed it.
