‘TWILIGHT’: WHY DO ALL THE BOYS LIKE BELLA IF SHE’S ‘AVERAGE’?

Posted May 30th, 2009 By: Team Switzerland 18 Comments »

Q. Why do all the guys at Forks High like Bella if she’s supposed to be average-looking? Is she pretty or not?

A. In high school, I was a mousy, A-track wall-flower. I had a lot of incredible girlfriends, but I wasn’t much sought after by the Y chromosomes, if you know what I mean. Then I went to college in Provo, Utah. Let me tell you, my stock went through the roof. See, beauty is a lot more subjective than you might think. In Scottsdale, surrounded by barbies, I was about a five. In Provo, surrounded by normal people, I was more like an eight. I had dates every weekend with lots of really pretty and intelligent boys (some of whose names end up in my books).

It didn’t surprise that all the guys were hitting on Bella in Twilight! When I moved from WI to MI my first year hear the guys were all over me too. Everyone had known each other since like preschool and then I show up…..the new fresh meat! A Forks is a small town and all those kids grew up together and her comes Bella and she’s nothing like all the other girls in Forks! I think that I had read that SM based Bella’s arrival off of her own experience and I like hearing Edward’s thoughts on Bella and how he doesn’t understand why everyone is so excited about this girl!

Well Bella is pretty, in a natural way. I think the boys of Forks like natural beauty. You can see they were all attracted to her, even though she was kind of shy. Edward knew all the boys liked Bella from reading their minds. He was attracted to her the moment they met..it was not just her scent, but Bella herself. In the book he tells her you are the most beautiful thing in my world..or something similiar to those words. The story is about Bella & Edward’s love, but it is ironic that Rob had a crush on Kristen when they first met. It took him a long time to come to grips with it. I’m not even sure that it is over (feelings). I think that it is one of the reasons why the Twilight saga is so realistic, it’s because of the chemistry (there are some feelings between them), they are great friends. I think Kristen would be there for Rob and Rob for Kristen. They each are very talented individuals and make their impression on screen.

The guys started chasing me after high school. Never could figure that one out because I was the same person. Maybe I was just to shy in school. Edward could not read Bella’s mind. That was probably a source of mystery and expectations. What is she thinking? You know how we love mystery. I did read the excerpt from Midnight Sun! Fabulous! I hope she finishes it soon. What a waste if she doesn’t. Absolutely something to look forward too!

Bella thinks of herself as average looking, but she only has pale skin, she does not wear makeup, so she is very natural looking not average, she has long brunette hair, not long blonde hair…. so Bella thinks she average and awkward . All the magazines out there lead you to believe you have to be blonde , blue eyed, tanned, athletic….to be pretty or even beautiful…. so not only Bella thinks of herself as average, but so do many other girls who are brunettes, I know I am a brunette and growing up I wished I was blonde, so I could be pretty ,too. But Boys most Boys actually like girls who are more natural looking, who don’t wear a lot of makeup like they fell into a can of paint…
I think the boys of Forks High like Bella, because she a natural girl new and awkward and there is a mystery , too. And I think the male urge to protect, her in a sense and because she wasn’t like most of the other girls in Forks, that made Bella attractive to them, “shiny new toy “as Jessica said in the movie….. and of course for Edward it was her scent “ La tua cantante” and because he could not read her mind , he became intrigued with her as well , the need to protect her and then fall in love….

TWILIGHT MOM AUSTRALIA, you said exactly what I was thinking. I would like to add one thing though. At first Edward couldn’t understand why all the “sheep like” males were so infatuated with Bella. But, after he took a good look at her, he couldn’t understand why HE didn’t see her for the beauty that she is. He thinks this in Midnight Sun. Rosalie even admits to Bella that she’s pretty. Afterall, the whole series is narrated from Bella’s perspective and that’s how she see’s herself. Most teenage girls feel this way about themselves.
I never once thought of Bella as average.

I agree with what the last two posters said. When reading the books, I always pictured Bella as being pretty, not traffic stopping gorgeous, but still uniquely beautiful. I always thought that she was the one who didn’t think she was beautiful and she thought she was only average because, like most of us, we think the same way about ourselves because we are so critical of our appearances. Edward kept telling her over and over again that she never saw herself very clearly and that every male in their high school was constantly after her.

As the others have said, Bella was natural, had beautiful skin, and was someone new. Being shy, not gregarious, not phony (lots of make-up) were all things to set her apart. Of course, besides this list, she could not see herself as others did, this is a common trait among most teen girls and boys. Even Edward had self-doubt. The teen years are just about the worst in anyone’s life. You think you are ready for a relationship, but you don’t know how. You aren’t at all sure of yourself, especially with the constant media blasting of a certain body/facial image. You can’t believe you are worthy. Of anyone.

As Twilight Mom Australia also pointed out, Bella had the vulnerability that caused everyone boy to want to be with her. To protect her. Jessica and Lauren certainly did not have this. Even Angela, though shy, seemed stronger, at least at first. Bella projected not a weak, female image, but a tender one. All of these qualities combined made her irresistible to the males, student or otherwise.

When I was reading the book, I thought that Bella was average looking to herself because she was comparing herself to the stereotype of what people from Arizona should look like : blonde, sporty, tan… She looked average to herself because of this comparison but in reality, she really is pretty. I think that, like the others have said, her natural look makes her even more beautiful. Just like Edward always tells her, she never sees herself clearly. I think that her being the first new face since the Cullens arrived in Forks helped a little, though, caused a couple of the boys to go overboard. I always imagined that Bella was pretty though, from the description she gives of herself.

I think that she was described as average looking from Stephenie’s point of view. Reguardless is she was average looking or super fine they would have still acted that way. That theory is definatly true. It’s kind of the same with me. Where I live at now guy don’t think of me as a pretty girl, but if i were to go where my father lives (which is across the country) guy would be all over me.

  • Reela

Yeah I think I get what Stephenie is talking about.

I’ve never thought my self as beautiful but I think I am a bit pretty, in spite of the glasses that I wear 24/7! Lately though I have been the subject of numerous males’ attention, especially at a wedding I went to recently where I was the only new person and everyone else knew each other. Before I realised it, I had 4 or 5 guys hitting on me; it felt nice and really helped my self esteem! :P

When I visit India(where my parents are from) the same thing happens, its like I go from being average to above average and I get a lot of stares and looks from guys.

I guess we are all beautiful in some way and sometimes a change in scenery really does put a spin on how we are perceived by others.

  • jinx

I think that we never truly see ourselves or our beauty–it is a mystery to us. Now on the other hand, I believe that others outside of ourselves see us far more clearly. It also depends on where we are emotionally and sometimes geographically.

Bella is a “new student” in Forks. She may have been seen as a child by these “boys” and because of their age and hers she was never given a second glance. Now that she has come to live in Forks, she has an air of mystery–she is unknown. Just as Jessica says, “(she) is the new toy”. Bella’s quiet assurity and quick wit far outweighs her clumsiness. It also make her more enticing to the teenage boys. Boys like pretty shiny things that make them laugh. (ask my husband)

I’m sure that Ms. Meyer modeled many things in her books after her experiences. It is better to write about what it is you know but far better reading to write about what you have experienced.

I enjoyed the Midnight Sun excerpt. It in many ways reveals to us that Edward is still human–let me explain. He knows that he is a Vampire, feels because of his unique gift that he is, in some ways, superior, and hates himself for it all at the same time. Along comes Bella…she smells of fresia, has the most beautiful way of just being herself, and frustrates the HELL out of him because he can not read her mind. In many ways she has renedered him helpless. Why? He can’t resist her and yet he won’t end his misery. He is at an impass. As he hears the thoughts of the other human boys and their mere lust for Bella, Edward’s true feelings for her are revealed. You know that he loves her immediately and sees her as she cannot and will not see herself.

I myself woundered this. Why would the guys in Forks see her as this beautiful girl and practically do anything to get a date with her and she barley had friends in Arizonia let alone guys falling at her feet? In my opinion from her description I don’t think she seemed that boring or plain looking, she seems pretty to me. I think I would have to agree with Bella, and say that the guys in Arizonia saw her go through all her awkward stages and stuff like that so they see her differently, thats the only thing I can think of. This is a harder question then I thought it would be. Oh and also I suck at spelling so if anything is spelled wrong in this I am so sorry im not stupid I just have issues with spelling. So please no replies on my awful spelling. I hope everyone has a wounderful day. TEAM EDWARD

Midnight Sun was great, actually. It was neat looking at Edward’s view in the story because I never realized how Jessica was so much into Edward, till after reading it. It was cool even reading about what happend to the guys that were going to attack Bella in town, if he had not been there to save her. The ideas that Stephanie has are just amazing and I hope to read more of her books to come. It’s sad that she did not decide to move on from there with this book, though, because I think it would have been another great hit.

Bella doesn't see herself as pretty or beautiful, but other people do. It's just a normal insecurity with being a teen girl. You think that you're just average, but there are people who think you're actually pretty (personal experience!)
Bella just happened to come to Forks, be a new face for the boys to look at and they all started to like her.

  • Guest

I agree :) It was amazing reading it from Edward's POV
I loved reading the parts where he was falling in love with her, so romantic!

Yes I aggree with the prior post, beauty is subjective. I was going to say something else to add. Most Girls are mildly attractive to repulsive, and any pretty girl is a horrible, sadistic, cheating, “new man every night” monster..I’m sure there are exceptions to the rule…but so far….no documented cases….

The other girls in that High School- did you see even one prettier than Bella? Besides, The actress who plays Bella is totally H.O.T. ; in make-up, hair done, nice dress on the red carpet…so is the “want to be BFF’s with Bella” Vamp Alice Cullen, with the short hair cut OMG don’t get me started…well , I’m a guy , flesh and blood…enough said…Bella(and Alice are both extremely) a 10 when cleaned up right, and running barefoot with the vampires through Washington State, but I digress..

A high school year book will prove my point a few years out: I had crushes on girls in a all girl private school , but look at the pictures now…They were heinous, absolute deformity stage-Fugly, and any truly pretty girl you will ever meet, in any culture around the world, are spoiled, arrogant, highly promiscous, and mean, which is a part of nature. Their good looks can land them a rich man , taller, fatter, balder, dumber, and more cuckold than you(look it up).

Bella’s character is not at the “Knowing that she is beautiful” stage, right below it ; she is cocky, yes, but still approachable, closer to the ‘every girl’ mediocraty(a trick of film magic). My first statement convied my thought : “Most girls are mildly attractive, to repulsive.” Sad but true.

    {now for something different, and fun for some}

If you find a pretty girl, try finding one with pretty and tough, thick soled feet. Think its easy? A lot of girls who are beautiful have heinous feet.

Why did I make this about feet? I am still thinking about Alice running through the Washington Forests barefoot, and my mouth started to salivate…yes…I would kiss her down there for hours.

Some of you don’t understand that desire ; it’s because you think of feet as unattractive, because you have unattractive feet. Understood ; so why don’t you think there is a whole sub culture of feet prettier than yours, and therefore, an enhancment to sex you will never know?

Bow down Vanilla-Sex People – there are people smarter than you.”and yes…I.Am.Wierd.!”
