THE TWILIGHT SERIES IS A CRAPFEST – REVIEW

Posted September 26th, 2008 By: 40 Comments »

Tweenteacher.com has a review of the Twilight series. The author had good intentions – she wanted to read what the kids are reading so she could discuss it intelligently with them. But then she labels it a crapfest. Really? Is that necessary? Here is some of what she had to say:

Book one, Twilight: outsider girl falls in love with cold, unemotional, tortured, vegetarian vamp who won’t tell her the truth about anything, including his feelings towards her. Her father, meanwhile, is totally unattached to reality, doesn’t notice there’s a vampire sleeping in her room each night. She almost dies.

Book two, New Moon: outsider girl still loves cold, unemotional vamp who has a hard time staying a veggie around her. He still can’t tell her how he feels, breaks her heart by deserting her.

Book three, Eclipse: They plan a marriage that outsider girl really doesn’t want because she thinks it’s stupid; but if he wants it, and as long as it then leads to sex, she’ll agree.

Book four, Breaking Dawn: Outsider girl finally becomes beautiful and feels accepted.

In other words, this is clearly a series about a girl who never feels comfortable in her own skin until she’s being emotionally abused by someone who constantly battles his urge to hurt her. She makes excuses for his hurt and asks for more with each book.

I took a lot of the details out in the above excerpts. Check out the entire review and let us know what you think. Are we fans of a crapfest? Just wondering, because I found the series had much more depth than she gives credit for.

okay, people are entitled to their own opinion but is it really that serious. I mean Yes I enjoyed and loved the series and I am an addict but still it is just a story. It’s a great sci-fi/ or fictional story that someone can read to get away from everyday life. Do we have to make it all about being politically correct. Okay so charlie was oblivious to what was going on with his daughter… well guess what i got news for you…. not every parent knows what their kid does ALL the time. Yes, good parents should strive to know what’s going on with their kids but seriously…ugh. And then she states that it’s about a girl who doesn’t feel comfortable in her own skin… i think that’s why it’s more relatable because many people don’t feel comfortable with themselves but in the end of the story everything works out. I guess you could say it gives those who are uncomfortable, hope about the future.

  • Tsuki

I laughed when I read it.

    It was really funny.

  • http://myspace.com/habibahmed Habiba

    what the hell?!!!
you can’t just sum up 4 incredible books to meaningless, shallow, and ignorant comments!!!!!!!
if sci-fi isn’t her cup of tea then she shouldn’t have read it, and now that she did then maybe she would’ve wanted to keep her opinion strictly to herself. around 10 million people across the globe are reading those books and the numbers are rising significantly each day.
I’m a writer so I must say I’m insulted by how this teacher managed to reduce Stephenie Meyer’s work of art into -i’m speechless i can’t even find the words-
I don’t understand how she views Edward and Bella’s relationship? her -bella- wanting to be mistreated by her love while he -Edward- as someone who is too frightened to even give their relationship a chance. when that is all he’s tried to do. by the end of New Moon we all find out that he was coming back anyway because he couldn’t stand being away from her anymore.
I can’t even think straight anymore. point is how can she not see the paradox of their -vampires- existence? they powerful yet they are entirely helpless when it comes to their loved ones. him loving a mortal who could expire at any given date is hell for him. he didn’t want to turn her so she can lead a happy peaceful life and all she ever wanted was to end up like him so she could be at his side for ever.
how did she miss that in her jumpo mumpo about the series?!!!
why can’t she just create a hate group and make my day?!!

  • http://myspace.com/arikka_monique Arikka

ome! i cant believe it!!!! that really makes me mad- no we are not fans of a “crapfest” its a perfctly beautiful book **cough cough** er i mean way of LIFE!

  • Larissa

I was appaulled when I read it. I mean I can reduce anything that I want to make it sound horrible, but I don’t.

She wasn’t considering what’s going on in the series. It was obvious she didn’t understand everything…*shrugs*…I’m not going to obsess over it, but I wish people weren’t like that.

  • Katelin Victoria

    Uhhhhhm…

“Book two, New Moon: He still can’t tell her how he feels, breaks her heart by deserting her.”

I can’t believe that, he did tell her his true feelings.
That makes this completely void in my eyes.
    They didn’t even understand apparently.

    But funny even so :D

  • creed

couldnt of summed it up better good job

  • http://random Detestar-Hybrid

lol i agree with Tsuki…i laughed when i read the review…lol its kinda of funny.
‘Her father, meanwhile, is totally unattached to reality, doesn’t notice there’s a vampire sleeping in her room each night’

lol ^^^^ i wouldnt realise that either if i was bellas father lol
but when you look at the review i doesnt sound like a review….just some words put together with no meaning at all!!!!

and the writer obviviously didnt get what Twilight and the other books are about :(
    i feel kinda sorry for her/him :(

  • VanessaC

ok, i am definitely NOT going to read this b/c it will only make me really angry- and anyway, i can already tell that this is going to be an extremely bad review- and when i say “bad” that has nothing to do w/whether it is looking at Twilight in a negative or positive light, it simply means that it is very poorly done. I know this already b/c one of the first things it says is that Edward is “unemotional” and “tortured”…. ok, i dont care HOW you feel about Twilight, but could someone PLEASE tell me how exactly someone can be “tortured” AND “unemotional” at the same time? isnt that a complete oxymoron? that was all i had to read to tell me that it wasnt worth reading anymore- if someone is confused enough to call something tortured and emotionless at the same time- 2 complete opposites- then obviously they dont know what theyre talking about. not to mention saying Edward cant admit how he feels- uh, HOW many times did he tell Bella how much he loved her? like, a million, and w/way more honesty than any guy i know, thats 4 sure. What part of “you are my life now” doesnt this person get? i mean really, i would not expect someone whos afraid to admit how he feels to say THAT. and thats just towards the beginning of their relationship in Twilight- he only admits it more and more as the books go on. anyway, point being, this person obviously didnt know what they were talking about- i dont even care whether it was being positive or negative about twilight, thats obviously true- and therefore is really not worth anyones time. Whew, deep breath. long rant over.

  • KiddoCullen

That was the funniest reaview that I ever read in my life about a book. I mean she reallyread those book with her eyes and mind closed. omg she is actually seriouse aboutthat. oh man she is funny.

  • http://twitter.com/allisonosity captain sarcasm!

    vampire sleeping in bella’s bedroom.
omg this is serious. um, first sleeping vampire!

edward can’t tell bella that he loves her. yup, totally dead on. yeha.

the twilight REVIEW series is indeed the crapfest, silly silly teacher

  • Lauren

Well, I happen to agree with that review….and I am a fourteen year old girl.

  • Laura

We are not fans of a crapfest b/c the Twilight series IS NOT a crapfest. The end.

  • Sarah

Oh boo hoo, someone has a different opinion than you (Emo tear)

Look, you can say she is being close-minded, but it seems that you all are closed minded to the idea Twilight being crap.

Seriously, tell me how saying, “THIS SERIES IS AWESOME! SHUT UP!” is being ‘open-minded’?

If you are going to whine about the review, provide PROOF that the books are good rather than blame the reviewer for, “not understanding the books.” They have their interpretation and you have yours; the only solid evidence you can get to support either side is from the books themselves…so far, I haven’t seen that much from your end outside of fan speculation. I would love to be enlightened, as would the reviewer probably would too (If people would stop falsely accusing her of being a fat old virgin who doesn’t know what true love is, etc etc)

Anyway, most of your reactions were pretty lulzy; the rest of you that weren’t so srs bsns about it, I tip my hat to you.

  • Rhiannon

omg! that lady needs to lay off! maybe she should write a better book since she thinks she’s sooo good! i think the books were amazing and edward is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo not unemotional, he’s amazing! hehe!

    rhi

  • lily

I think she’s totally right and the fans who are saying she’s wrong are all probably loveless tweenagers.

  • Janis

Well, she’s right. Edward’s an abusive boyfriend, and Bella allows it to be that way. There’s really no more depth than that.

  • JM

Oh, come on! It’s a fun read! And for those who think it isn’t, that’s fine, too.

(HATERS: Just remember there’s a very clear line between stating your opinion on the book and attacking those who happen to enjoy it! Is it really so hard to have the decency to be respectful? I guess for some of you, yeah.)

It’s true that there are better-written books out there, but many worse ones, too. I, for one, still enjoyed the story despite being well-aware of some of it’s flaws, because after all it’s just a fictional story!

  • Rachel

I believe she summed it just about right! Without Meyer’s flowery words and flair of melodramatic dialog – that’s just what the books were really about, plain and simple. People just take offense because they deemed it to be so much more, but honestly, it’s not.

  • Shawna

Edward has about the same amount of emotion as a rock.

Because he pretty much IS a rock.

  • Justine

A lot of you are overreacting to the review. This is a teacher, for crying out loud; she just wants what’s best for her students. State your opinion but give some good explanations for why you think the series is better than the credit she’s giving it (which is none). I don’t like the themes in the books, let alone the plot and the boring characters, so I think she’s nailed it.

Hey, I read negative reviews for my favorite things, too, and I at least try to understand where they’re coming from; knowing the pros and cons of things make me appreciate them even more. Try that.

And some of you need to fix your English.

  • http://www.tweenteacher.com tweenteacher

    Hey Twilighters!
I really appreciate the discussion going on about my review. I love talking about books, especially with those who disagree with me because that’s how I learn too.

You know what I would appreciate? Give me other titles that you feel passionately about. In general, I love sci-fi and fantasy. (I just finished The Diamond Age, Dr. Strange and Mr. Norell, Ender’s Game, and Summerland.) None of those are specifically romance books, but I thought them well-written. I also love historical fiction and romance as well, but I will read anything and talk about anything.

So please, when you comment, could you give me suggestions on what to read next that you love as well?

Maybe we can find a book to agree upon.

    Sincerely,
    Tweenteacher

  • AlexB

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I am a sixteen year old girl who personally loves the Twilight series. I thought that it was really good and i couldn’t put it down. She just interpreted some of the stuff differently than we did. Is that so wrong? I don’t think so and us fans should not flip out. As long as you love the books then why does it matter what she thinks?
Yeah i do wish she would loosen up a bit and realize that it’s just a fictional story and it doesn’t affect how we live our lives that much. Sure I think about the books alot but it doesn’t rule my life. Isn’t that all she’s worried about; us teenagers getting into abusive or unemotional relationships. (I really don’t get how she sees Edward as unemotional though) And I’m not a loveless tweenager, ok? I happen to have a boyfriend and I don’t compare him to Edward Cullen!

  • Rose

She got it bloody right. Is it just me, or can many Twilight fans not see the horrific message Twilight sends out? I know it’s not meant to be a book of morals, but there seems to be no underlying themes. Bella has to sacrifice nothing, and is driven by lust and vanity.

Maybe I’m just a 16-year-old girl who can’t appreciate real literary quality when she sees it.

  • :)

Uh….Twilight is clearly a crapfest. I agree with the reviewer because seriously, come on now. Does Twilight deserve to named best love story of the 20th century? Those crazy fangirls think it’s like their next Pride and Prejudice. Just search up ‘nuttymadam’ on Youtube and watch the horror for yourself. It’s a sad world. Stephanie Meyer was also named one of the most influential people on TIMES Magazine. Epic FAIL.

  • Lauren

I’m going to be honest with you, these books were hilarious. I couldn’t help but to laugh at the books, but all that put aside they are pretty interesting books to escape away from reality and our own war heading off seas. I actually love reading fantasy books and this was no exception, it fell right into that core. It had everything a teen fantasy book ought to have, a complicated love triangle, pregnancy, indecision, the fear of growing up etc.

  • Greta

Twilight is indeed a crapfest. It’s amusing to scroll through these responses and see fans defending their beloved series by talking about its DEEPNESS and LOVE and DEEEEEPNESS and anyone who hates these books is heartless and shallow if they didn’t get the DEEPNESS of the story.

  • Ree

You guys are right – how could she think she could summarize a whole entire series with so few words.

I mean, come on! Tween Teacher’s forgetting the part where Bella is a borderline sociopath with a world that extends no further than her luff for Eddy dearest. She never mentions that while the whole series is centered on a main conflict of ‘I want to eat you, so it’s kinda hard to love you’ that is basically null and void. ‘Cause everyone knows Ed is too perfect for that nonsense! And, yes, his pycho-controlling mannerisms do contribute to said perfect-ness. The phenomena of what I see as pedophilia (“Woe, Bella! I will never have your love… Hey, wait, that your kid?”) and hardcore violent sex goes completely unmentioned. The list could go on. And on. And on. But…

Perhaps most atrociously, she forgets to poke fun at the SPARKLY wonder of Ed in the sun.

    Seriously now.

  • Kelsey

    Epic. Review.
Honestly, since when is an abusive relationship seen as “true love”?

  • ari

    This review is right on.
I want to thank you twilighters who made the obnoxious first comments. You made my day. Who needs stand up quality when you have twi-hards?

  • http://ta.com dawn

lol kinda negates your point ari, that you’re on a website about twilight. why bother if it’s such a crapfest? isn’t that a waste of your time…or maybe you secretly like it.
thanks for taking the time to visit and comment.

  • Kristy

Okay, so she didn’t like the series, but everybody is entitled to their own opinion. I found the series entertaining, but there’s no need to completely obliterate the woman for voicing her opinion. It’s great that stephenie meyer has a fan base for her novels, but you guys have to understand that not everybody likes every book that’s published. Yeah she should have justified the points that she made, it only makes her look illiterate and down right stupid. At the end of the day, it’s just a series of novels, their sole purpose is to entertain people. They’ve well and truly done that.

  • cheyenne

I understand that many think this book is bad, but disagree.

when the the critic say that Edward is unemotional, controlling, I believe that she must have not read it thoroughly.

In the very first book he states it numerous times that she was unsafe to be around him. Anytime he hurts her he feels guilt that is painful for him. That is why he doesn’t want to go to far with her, in fear of hurting her. In breaking dawn, he feels so guilty and angry for getting Bella pregnant, that he asks for Jacob to kill him. That does not sound unemotional to me. He is a vampire he was born strong, he can’t control his strength but he can control his behavior.

When you say he is controlling, he is partially. He only tries to do what is best for Bella. He doesn’t want her to get killed, considering that she is accident prone and a prime target as a snack. That is why he takes such measures. And it is only really controlling when the other feels that they have no control. Bella is told that if she wanted to leave him then she may, he would let her go, because she has free will.

when others here say she did not want to be pregnant, that was partially correct. She said in breaking dawn that she did not want to have a kid, but that she wanted this kid and that she needed it. Bella, unlike many would like to believe, does have to sacrifice a lot. HER FRIENDS. HER FAMILY. Plus she never planned to go and fall in love. Love has a mind of its own.

I understand that many dislike this series but I don’t. I love the idea of forbidden love. this is only fantasy, and me being 14, understand that it is not real, and I have no need for guidance in reading in between the lines. I know what the things mean.

  • Eli

I have to agree with that review. A good story = imperfect character with perfect plot.

Twilight is just the opposite; Perfect Mary-Sue like characters with a paper thin plot full of holes in them.

Bella’s character is intolerable and incredibly boring. She first insist that she’s normal and unpopular in her last school, but in her new school, boys stick to her like paper clips to a magnet. Why? Because she’s actually beautiful but never knows it. SOMEBODY in her old school should have noticed, or are they all blind.

She doesn’t have a hobby other than reading, cooking, and thinking about the hunk she had just met. I wouldn’t call the way she acts towards her new friends rude, but if you’re a new kid in a school desprately wanting to fit in and somebody offered you a chance at a party, would you reject it? I think not.

There’s also a mistake when Meyere wrote about the attempt ganag rape. Any normal girls would’ve be shakened afterwards, even if their dream man for life rescued her. Bella brushed it off like nothing. It’s pretty unrealistic.

Edward is perfect. I hate perfect people. Why? They don’t exist. Yeah, vampires might not exist either, but every single being has got a flaw! Where is that guy’s flaw? Also he glitters. Glittering Vampire? Original vampires are cool, but GLITTERING??? GLITTERING???

Their relationship is unhealthy, showing several signs of later might-be beatings and abuse. Check a website about it; you’ll find a list on the showing signs. The ‘love’ going on between Edward and Bella fits at least six out of the ten.

Nothing significant happened till the end of the story; 200 pages of Bella mooning over Edward’s hotness and two more hundred pages of them just jumping into a relationship with no explanation or build up. It was only till the last hundred page that James actually made an appearance.

I’ve also spot a lot of grammar errors in the book (I’ve only read the first one). Meyer should double-check her work and get a better editor. Also, she should really consider taking writing class.

It astonished me that the books made it to the best-seller list and is being compared to Harry Potter- an insult to JK Rowling, poor woman.

If you like the Twilight Saga, I think that you’d fit into at least one of the following category:

    1) you rarely, if ever reads

    2) you know little to nada about vampires

    3) you’re between the age of 10-13

    4) you’ve never read any other author’s vampire books

    5) you’re into reeeeaaally sappy romance

    6) you’re bad at grammar

A mature, bookwormish vampire-know-it-all Grammarian would not have considered Twilight a phenomenal.

  • Kelly

I agree with Eli. 100% I gave Twilight a chance, because I heard that it was amazing. I literally felt like I had to puke it was so terrible. I’m not lying. Edward is the most horrible character ever written in the book. Why do you girls like him? Please, tell me. He’s a creepy stalker, Gary-Stu who wouldn’t sound appealing at all if Meyer didn’t glorify it.

Please, girls, give me one REAL reason Twilight is good, besides “ITS SOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOD!!!!111!!!” or “EDWARD IS SOOOOO HAAWT” (or anything along those lines.) Then read a good book, like Harry Potter. =D

  • Oma

    Hello there,
    I must admit I enjoyed the entire Twilight series and I feel the saga had a much more deeper meaning than “high school love, girl meets boy, girl likes boy, boy enjoys witless girl’s adoration, boy leaves, girl mopes, boy comes back, HAPPY ENDING!” The book, in my opinion, extends far beyond your average teenage love story. The series contains underlying currents of how simple love drove two centuries old disagreeing clans to peace. At the end of the series, the were-wolves and the vampires are at peace with one another; they learned to exist together without ripping each other apart. Sure, were-wolves and vampires do not exist (or atleast I don’t think they do) but is the idea of peaceful conflict resolution and self-sacrifice such a horrid one to emulate in the minds of our youth. I am thirteen years old, and I realise that because of my gender (female) and my age, people are automatically going to rank me with the obseessive “OMG Edward Cullen is sooooo SEXY” fan club. However, the book was a little inspiring for me in its own way. However, I don’ think it was such a bad book. I think the preganancy scene in Breaking Dawn is perect for exemplifying the idea that our youth do NOT wish to get pregnant so young because it sure is going to cause a lot of pain. Also, I believe the idea of Bella giving up her friends and family for her desire, her dream, is a meaningful one. Sometimes if you really believe in something then you may just have to stand alone to accomplish that goal. I am in no way saying that people should give up their family and friends for the “love of their life,” yet at the same time, one needs to realize what is best for them, what they wish to achieve in life, and they need to whole0heartedly set their minds on it. The whole controversy over Bella giving up her ambitions for Edward is pretty pointless because this is a FANTASY book. She is going to have eons of time upon her hands and she can study for how long she wants to. Of course, it is not advisable to do that in reality because the average life sapn is little over 70 years of age and not centuries. I am an avid reader and I did not just pick Twilight off the shelves because I have an obsession for sappy love stories. I do enjoy romance novels yet in truth, I enjoy a variety of novels. Some of my favorites include:Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood; J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter Series; Dan Brown’s Angels & Demons; Dan Brown’s The DaVinci Code; J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye; Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner; Khaled Hosseini’s One Thousand Splendid Suns; Alice Walker’s The Color Purple; Frances Hodgeson Burnett’s A Little Princess;

  • kimchi

there are good and bad points to this series. why is it causing such an uproar–that’s what we need to examine.

  • Yente

Okay it’s just cute Edward isn’t just a stalker.. his personage is amazing he doesnt have a soulmate all of his family (the cullens) have then he finally mets someone he thinks is interesting WHY NOT follow her, if it was a mortal person okay its freaky (but flattering, no just freaky sorry). But he is not so that’s different.

She really should recheck her grammar (sorry if mine sucks, im dutch)

And what some people say about bella, she doesnt really have much hobbys because she took care of her mother (she really is into reading though whats wrong with that?). Bella can control her emotions well, she’s got that from her dad and she couldnt know those guys were going to rape her the thought of it and those guys were like with her 10 sec orsomething.

And I do agree that this is not the best novel of the 20th century. It’s just so appealing to people my age because you just can forget everything. And if your life sucks at the moment that’s just all you need sometimes.. What’s wrong for a girl to hope?

I also thought that twilight (especially the movie) just came this like super deep relationship i mean, the first time i was like aww he is super cute and perfect (blabla u guys know what i mean) but like you read it 2 and especially with the movie their relationship just got so deep in a sudden.. That’s unreal i guess..

but its not all about bella and edward.. only in twilight in the other books there is jacob.. He’s cool human and stuff and their relationship is pretty normal compared to bellas and edwards. If you really read the book you must notice at least some little thing that is positive?! why is is so popular if it is such a bad book?!

But that’s just what i think, if you hate the book so much you should totally make a blog or something. And i also agree that some girls overreact to this, but didnt people do that with harry potter or whatever popular childrens book, It’s just a fase let them be it will pass.

  • Mariatherese521

    ha ha…..i totally agree.

  • Kitey

no, you’re fans of a crapfest.
