WHY DID STEPHENIE CHOOSE THE TITLE ‘TWILIGHT’?

Posted January 24th, 2009 By: Team Switzerland 25 Comments »

Why did you pick the title Twilight?

Twilight was not the easiest book to title. When I started sending out queries, I called it Forks for lack of a better idea. The first thing my agent advised me was that the title was going to have to change. We played around with a lot of different titles, and nothing seemed to convey the right feel. We brainstormed through emails for about a week. The word twilight was on a list of “words with atmosphere” that I sent her. Though these words were meant to be used in combination with something else, the word twilight stood out to both of us.

What do you think about Stephenie’s comments on the title? Are you surprised given the Edward’s poignant line in the book?

If you had read Twilight as a manuscript before it was titled, what would you have called it?

  • been a vampire since age3

I don’t know I would have had it Forks but when I hear TWILIGHT thats the title right there

  • EM

I think Twilight is the best title for the book. I couldn’t think of any other title for it. The word did explain itself in the story and I like how it was used in the lines.

  • LaurenShmauren

haha im glad she chose “twlight” other than Forks for lack of a better idea is kinda ummm not good. and that name would be good with sequels

  • twilightjunkie

I think it was perfect for the title…one definition of twilight is “the period in the morning or in the evening during which light prevails”….which I think represents beginning and the end…. the end of the old life that Bella and Edward had in the past and the beginning of new lives together….the title was very appropiate I think.

  • TwiFan003

The Lion & The Lamb or The Lion’s Lamb or something like that. But I can’t think of a better title than Twilight. Its a pretty great title.

  • AllisCullen

I’m not sure that there would have been a better title…

I wasn’t sure that it fit, until Edward’s line, and then there’s just no other title that I would have given it!

  • Kate

Although “Forks” is kind of a bland title, it does kind of fit, like Bella reaches a fork in the road of her life, and has to choose between life and almost literal death, between Edward and mortality etc. Twilight is all about choices. Does that make sense to anyone else?

  • Amor Vincit Omnia

Hey Kate, yeah that made sense! I think that Twilight is all about the impasse at the end of the book. Twilight for me means that they are in between. Neither of them can go back to the life they had before they met each other, but their future isn’t clear either. So, yeah, I definitely think that Twilight is the best title.

  • kelly

i think Twilight is the best title just because of the sound of it. I really do think that was a smart choice!

  • Corinne

There are probably a million different better choices. I don’t really like the whole moon theme, it doesn’t really make that much sense.

Still, she got lucky because Twilight was catchy and it probably helped the books become popular.

  • Emilia

    AWESOME!!! =P

  • Anna

i like the title “Vampires And Humans Connect”
Jk twilight is the only title for this book

  • Allison

Forks, though and interesting place to live…I don’t know if I would have gotten the book with that title. I would have thought that the book, without reading what the it was about, was something to deal with cooking or cooking utensils. lol Twilight definately is the perfect title. Excellent choice guys. :)

  • Amy

I think that Forks would be to boring.

I think that the title is perfect.. I am glad that she didn’t stick to Forks!! It is not very Catchy.. Twilight has a nice ring to it and is also has a mystical feel to it also!!

  • lisa

I like the fact that the books were named after celestial events.
They are glorius and beautiful, overpowering, fated.
Like Amor Vincint Omnia said before, Edward and Bella could not go back to lives they previously had.

  • Bella (my real name) but not isabella

The tittle twilight is pretty random really i dont even think she wrote the word twilight in the book!

  • http://www.elizabethcoo.piczo.com Elizabeth

It was the perfect titile for it!!

  • katie

I think twilight was the perfect title because even though some other titles might have fit, it was twilight that made it perfect and edward’s line made the twilight title even more prominent that it had to be that….at least thats what i think

  • http://emmettsgurl Tara

I love the title of all the books it fits them perfectly.

  • nicole

did you guys know that twilight, new moon, eclipse, and breaking dawn have a meaning to them….??!!??!

  • http://www.alittlemid.com Immortal_Being

Twilight is a good title. Forks makes me think it’s a vampire cookbook.

  • Paige

I think Forks is a good name, if you’re not calling it Forks for the name of the town, but metaphorically, for the “froks” in Bella’s “road”, so to speak, and all the choices she has to make.
I have a question: Is there a way we could get this list of “words with atmosphere”? It’s been gnawing at me, I’ve been trying to figure out which words would be on that list, and it’s driving me crazy.

  • http://www.aim.com Kaitlyn

it dont think that forks would do it but when i hear Twilight, everything is just perfect! i luv the name Twilight so much!

  • Izzy (yes that is my real name)

My friend keeps bugging me that you should have named the book “Lunar Shift” and not Twilight. I think Twilight was the best name you could have chosen!
